The Board of Education has set a tone of excellence, centered around three goals for the 2014-2015 school year: Increasing Student Achievement Talent Development/Sound Fiscal Budget Branding/Marketing These goals provide us with a roadmap for continued success. As a district, we are very proud of earning a letter grade of “A”. This is a reflection of solid instructional practices and dedicated staff members. Site of the nation’s only school district with a full elementary magnet structure. All students in grades 7-12 have one-to-one computer devices and internet access. Home to McKenzie Center for Innovation & Technology. Two High Schools offering 21+ AP courses. Alternative education programming available to credit-deficient students at Lawrence Advance Academy. Transportation available to all students. Pre-School of the Arts programming and Kindergarten in four Early Learning Centers. 6 DISTRICT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Elementary Schools: Of the 11 elementary schools, 10 were rated a C or higher by the State of Indiana. Crestview Elementary was the recipient of the Magnet Schools of America Magnet School of Distinction Award. Brook Park hosted the largest school environmental fair in district history. Sunnyside Elementary implemented the United Way Side By Side Program. Nearly 100 students and families received an extended day service that allowed parents, students, and teachers to work in partnership towards student achievement. Oaklandon Elementary & Mary Evelyn Castle Elementary spearheaded an aquaponics project that was researched, designed and built by three different classes. The result is a viable garden producing vegetables and serving as a filter for forty tilapia fish in a 300 gallon tank. Harrison Hill Elementary is a 2014 recipient of the largest United Way Student Success Grant in program history. Indian Creek Elementary’s Lego League Team won first place trophies for Robot Design and Robot Performance at the November regional competition. Forest Glen Elementary 6th Grade immersion students will be going on cultural trip to Ecuador for 10 days. Skiles Test Elementary developed an American Heart Association Teaching Garden. Magnet integration programming at Winding Ridge Elementary included: First Grade performances, Winter is the Warmest Season program, Veteran's Day Program, Silly Shenanigan's Program, Choir- Motown Sound Program, Folk Dance Festival, & Circle the State with Song, & a Student Talent Show. 7 Middle Schools: At Fall Creek Valley (FCV), 99% of students passed the Algebra I End of Course Assessment (ECA) and 98% of students passed the Biology ECA. The FCV Robotics team won the City Competition, the State Competition and went to the World Competition. They placed 24th in the World. Belzer Middle School (BMS) earned an “A” school rating for the 2 nd consecutive year. BMS developed and implemented an HonorBound program – mentoring and advanced language arts curriculum for African-American male students. High Schools: The Lawrence Central (LC) and Lawrence North (LN) Class of 2014 earned nearly 27 Million Dollars in scholarships. The LC Academic Super Bowl Interdisciplinary Team qualified for the State Finals. The LC Cub Reporter was named a Hoosier Star, the top award for scholastic journalism in the state of Indiana. LC Spirit of Central Marching Band finished 8th at the Bands of America Grand National Finals LN had two National Achievement Scholars and Four National Merit Commended Scholars. LN North Star was a Hoosier Star finalist (for best paper in the state) for the 7th consecutive year. LN National Honor Society provided over 11,700 of service in and around the community LC senior, Marialle Sellars placed in the top 10 on FOX’s American Idol. McKenzie Center for Innovation & Technology: Interactive media students created a video game called,“Multiplicaship”, a math game designed for second through fourth grade students where they learn multiplication skills in a 3D environment. Students, Kelsey Powers (LN) and Jarred Clemons (LC) placed first in the AAA Student Auto Skills competition. They competed in the national FORD AAA Student Auto Skills Competition June 8th - 11th against 49 other state finalists at the FORD World Headquarters. MCIT Biotech Team is the 1st Place Winner of the Indiana High School Biotechnology Consortium (IHBC) Student Research Contest. Culinary Arts won the State Championship. 100% of students in health careers, cosmetology and collision repairs passed State certification exams. Resident transfer requests shall have priority over nonresident transfers. Resident transfers for whom transportation is provided by the district shall have priority over transfers required to provide their own transportation. Transportation shall be the responsibility of those transferring to a school not within the family’s designated attendance area School Choice is offered to all students of the MSD of Lawrence Township at the elementary and secondary level. Lawrence Township may accept the transfer of a student who does not have legal settlement in the district provided the Board of Education has determined there is capacity to accept non-resident students. The Superintendent shall annually determine whether capacity exists in each district school and, if so, the number of seats available by school and grade level as well as whether any capacity exists in a school providing a special curriculum . The Board of Education shall annually approve the number of transfer students the school corporation has the capacity to accept in each grade level and the date by which requests to transfer in to the school corporation must be received. Resident transfer requests shall have priority over non-resident transfers. The Center embraces rigorous academic programs and diverse technological career courses, preparing college and career-bound students for postsecondary education at two and four -year colleges, military service, workplace entry, or advanced technical training in a variety of business, medical, and industrial fields. The low teacher-student ratio, nurturing environment, cutting edge technology, and broad array of career programs, focused and motivated students, dualcredited courses and national certifications are continually cited as advantages by MCIT students. 22 SPECIAL EDUCATION The Department of Exceptional Learners assists students in receiving the support and services they need to be successful in school. These resources include implementation of the use of research based practices that are individualized, appropriate, legally compliant and fiscally sound. These resources and interventions meet the student's social and instructional needs and will positively support and guide the student for successful transition from preschool services at age 3, through post high school services at age 22. The Department of Exceptional Learners promotes the integration of students with disabilities into the district initiatives of the project approach, response to instruction and cultural competency. Every student has accessible schools, educational supports and services including assistive technology to enable the students, their parents and staff to become positive advocates in developing an appropriate educational plan.
