Orientation and Training Session, one-hour, at the Meals
on Wheels Community Room, 8446 Virginia St.,
Merrillville. Applicants will have an opportunity to tour
the facility and ask questions. We are seeking volunteers
who are wanting to make a difference in the lives of the
homebound and elderly clients we serve. We are currently searching for drivers/delivery volunteers in the
Hammond and St. John. If you have knowledge of the
areas, we would appreciate your coming in to see how
your abilities can be utilized at Meals on Wheels. Each
day, volunteers assist in the delivery of more than 1,200
meals throughout Lake County.

“The Aisle Seat”

We have all seen the usual
favorite Christmas films. Form
any of us, it’s become part of our
annual holiday tradition. For this
column, I reached back into my
archives for a review I did in
2010 of overlooked holiday
movies of which you may not be
familiar. Having seen the
overlooked ones, there is a reason
we have the favorites we do.
Still, these movies deserve at
least one viewing and may bring
some fresh holiday cheer!
The first on my list is “The Shop Around the Corner”.
You may be familiar with this movie as it was remade into the
movie, “You’ve Got Mail”. Jimmy Stewart plays a store
clerk who shares romantic correspondence with a woman he has
never met. At the same time, he and a fellow female clerk
cannot stand one another. Of course, it’s no surprise when it’s
revealed that his anonymous pen pal is his female coworker.
For me, the meanness between the two main characters makes
this film less charming. What saves this movie is the fact that
Jimmy Stewart is in it. On my scale as to how much I would
pay, “The Shop Around the Corner” gets $5.
“Christmas in Connecticut” is about a magazine
columnist whose writings are devoted to being the perfect
homemaker. The trouble is that she is not a homemaker at all
and her magazine publisher plans to bring a returning war hero
to her home to enjoy a traditional Christmas. There is very little
plot to this movie and the story does drag a bit. Still, this
lighthearted comedy is a nice alternative to the favorites we
have watched countless times. On my scale, “Christmas in
Connecticut” gets $6.

My final selection is “Remember the Night”. Of the
three, this was my favorite and it may be one I watch again.
When a shoplifter’s trial is postponed until after the holidays, a
sympathetic prosecuting attorney arranges for her bail so she
will not be in jail during the holidays. When he takes her home
to Indiana to meet his family, they soon fall in love. The only
problem now is what to do about her upcoming trial upon their
return? For me, it was a little unbelievable that the prosecuting
attorney would be fraternizing with someone he was
prosecuting. I did, however, find much in this movie to be both
charming and fun and I enjoyed spending my time with these
characters. On my scale, “Remember the Night”
gets $6.

Chocolate Peppermint Pie
Prep time: 30 minutes
Servings: 10-12
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
3 Eggs
1 cup white chocolate chips,
melted and cooled
1 cup whipped cream
1/2 cup crushed peppermint
candy (about 20 candy
rounds)
1 (9-inch) pie crust
1/2 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips, melted and
cooled slightly
Place cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar in large bowl. Beat
with electric mixer on low speed to combine. Increase speed to
high; beat until smooth, scraping bowl as necessary. Add eggs
one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Remove 1/2 cup cream cheese mixture; set aside. Add white
chocolate to remaining mixture; beat on medium to combine.
Fold in whipped cream. Gently stir in peppermint. Pour into pie
crust. Refrigerate 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, stir semisweet chocolate into reserved 1/2 cup
cream cheese mixture. Remove pie from refrigerator. Slowly
pour chocolate mixture over pie. Spread to cover pie, or use
knife to swirl chocolate. Freeze, covered, about 6 hours or until
firm. Note: Baked pastry crust or crumb crust such as
chocolate or graham cracker may be used.

Big Soft Ginger Cookies
3/4 cup margarine, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 tablespoon water
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Makes 2 dozen

honored in that ceremony.

Sift together the flour, ginger,
baking soda, cinnamon, cloves,
and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together
the margarine and 1 cup sugar until
light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the water and
molasses. Gradually stir the sifted ingredients into the molasses
mixture. Shape dough into walnut sized balls, and roll them in
the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar. Place the cookies 2 inches
apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet, and flatten slightly.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies
to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire
rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.

If you are like me your mind is on Christmas and not
gardening especially in December. But if you think about it
many holiday activities are actually related to gardening.
First there is the selection of a Christmas tree. If you buy a
cut tree, be sure to check for freshness by bending the
needles or bouncing the stump end of the tree on the ground
to check for needle “fall out”. Or you might prefer to buy a
living tree, which can be planted outdoors after the holidays
and enjoyed for many years to come. Select one that is
potted in a bushel basket or other large container or balled
with burlap with a large, firm root ball. Choose a uniformly
shaped tree with no signs of broken branches, dried out
foliage or poor color. In addition to
the tree, you’ll probably want to buy
a few holiday plants to decorate your
home. Poinsettias are a favorite.

The Burrowing
Eastern Mole
Anyone who has spent much time gardening or cutting the lawn has
probably encountered the tell-tale signs of an annoying yard pest: the
Eastern Mole. Moles burrow through yards and leave a trail of
destruction in the form of raised tunnels in the grass and large
mounds of earth. Homeowners routinely stomp on the raised
tunnels, only to find them again the next day.
The eastern mole (or common mole) lives most of its life underground, where it digs tunnels in an endless search for worms and
nightcrawlers. It grows to five or six inches in length, and has very
short, soft fur. Its oversized front feet have huge claws for digging.
Moles can dig surprisingly fast, and one individual can tear up an
entire lawn. Most people who think they have a major mole
infestation actually have only one mole in their yard.
Moles prefer a diet of earthworms, although they also eat snails,
garden slugs, centipedes and other subterranean insects like ants and
grubs. They have poor vision due to extremely small eyes, but their
fleshy nose is equipped with a keen sense of touch which helps them
find food as they probe through their dark tunnels.
Although considered a pest, moles can be effective at controlling
Japanese beetles by eating their larvae and they do provide good
lawn aeration. Still, most homeowners would rather get rid of the
lawn-wrecking moles than allow them to stay.

your vehicle. Along with these systems come appropriate
warnings letting us know when something has gone awry

Master Warning Light: A triangle with an exclamation point is
the Master Warning Light symbol. It is usually accompanied
by a text warning message. The message could indicate various things from the
serious “Low Oil Pressure” to the simple “Door Ajar” or possibly a reminder
such as “Change Oil Soon.”
Security/Immobilization Alert: There are several different symbols
manufacturers use when it comes to the
security/immobilization system. However, there are a few telltale symbols you
might see: a vehicle silhouette, a key or a lock. Any combination of these may
mean that the ignition switch is locked and will need the proper
transponder-equipped key to re-start. If the symbol is still visible when the
vehicle is on, then it typically indicates a malfunction in the security system.

Low Brake Pad Warning Light: Some European vehicle
manufacturers equip their vehicles with a Low Brake Pad
Warning Light. It is a circle with a set of lines which can be dashed or solid on
either side. The lines are meant to represent the brake pads.
If you see this light, ask your technician to take a look at your brake pads.
Stability Control Off Indicator: This light, or one of its text
equivalents, will tell you that the Stability Control System is
deactivated. The vehicle will operate normally without the help of this feature,
with the system off. The Stability Control System adjusts several vehicle
components, including the brakes, throttle, differential and/or suspension to help
keep a vehicle on track when there is a lateral slip in the tires. The system is
automatically turned off when the Check Engine Light is activated to prevent
inaccurate readings that would send incorrect instructions to the system.
Electric Park Brake Indicator: These are Electric Park Brake
(EPB) Fault Indicator symbols. Similar to the Low Brake Pad
Warning Light, The circle in brackets points to something in the braking system.
In this case, it also adds a lightning bolt, which indicates electricity. It will flash
or remain illuminated if a fault is detected. The vehicle will usually be safe to
drive. However, the parking brake will not operate properly.
Some manufacturers use a text version of this
warning light, and it can also indicate a fault
in the system. If the EPB light is seen with an illuminated Stability Control
warning indicator, have the Stability Control System services as soon as possible.
It is that system, not the brake, which has a problem that needs to be addressed.

Power Steering Trouble Light: If this light illuminates on your
dashboard, immediately drive to your nearest service center. It means there is a
problem with the power steering system, and it should be inspected immediately.
Airbag Fault: If this light stays illuminated after starting your
vehicle, it indicates the vehicle has a fault in the airbag system.
As long as the light is illuminated, the system is inactive and will not deploy an
airbag during a collision. It will remain that way until the fault is corrected. One
of many components in the system may be malfunctioning including the front
airbag modules, seat airbags, curtain airbags, control units, sensors, seat belt
pretensioners or occupant classification systems. If you see this light, have a
professional check it out to ensure your vehicle remains safe.

The Very First Christmas Day
His parents had no money, although He
was a King?
An angel came to Joseph one night as he
dreamed.

God's own Son,"
And with these words from God's
messenger, their journey had begun.

But when Christ was born they found no
place for the baby to be laid.

The shepherds came to worship Him, the

He was just a tiny baby, born in a stable
far away?
They had no reservations, and no where
else to stay.
But His birth was so majestic, in a simple
sort of way,
A baby born in Bethlehem on a very
special day.
It was the Savior born in Bethlehem, on
the very first Christmas Day.

Computer Classes:
Dec. 9th - Email essentials, 2-3:30pm. Adults will learn to open a free
email account, send and receive email, and attach pictures and other items
to email. Participants must already have mouse skills.
Dec. 10th - Social Media Savvy, 2pm. Adults will learn the basics of signing up for and using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Participants must already have mouse skills and an email address.
Adults & Teens:
Dec. 9th - Stamp Class, 6:30-8pm. Design personalized cards and other
paper creations with rubber stamps and ink. $5 fee covers the cost of
materials provided, due at the time of the class. Please bring a glue stick.
Dec. 10th - Mug Cake Competition, 6:30-8pm. Teens (11 to 18) can join
in a night of competition as we bake mug cakes. Compete to see who can
frost with the most skill. Then help to plan events, select young adult
books, and create our Teen Space.
Dec. 16th - AARP Smart Driver Course, 11am-3pm. Learn defensive driving techniques, safety strategies, and new traffic laws and rules of the
road. There is a $15 fee for AARP members or $20 for non-members. Call

Dec. 16th - Icy Lanterns, 6:30-8pm. Teens will create a tin luminary to

Dec. 8th, 9th, 15th & 16th - Story Hour for 4 and 5 year olds, 1:30pm.
Stories, songs, activities, a short film and a craft.
Dec. 8th, 9th, 15th & 16th - Mother Goose on the Loose, 10:30am. 30
minute program includes stories, songs and activities for infants and
toddlers, 6 to 23 months, accompanied by an adult caregiver.
Dec. 10th & 17th - Story Time for 2 & 3 year olds, along with their
caregivers, 10:15, 11:15am or 1:30pm. Enjoy stories, songs, activities and
a craft. Approximately 40 minutes.
Dec. 11th - Holiday Party, 6:30pm. School age children, kindergarten to
grade 6, will decorate cookies, make an ornament, play games, and hear
stories to celebrate the season.
Dec. 20th - Power Paws for Kids, 11am. Children of all ages will have the
opportunity to read a library book to one of the registered Delta Society
Pet Partner dogs (accompanied by their trainers). The dogs are provided
through Power paws for Kids, a non-profit organization.
Bacon Avocado Dip
Servings: 1 cup
1 large avocado, peeled and mashed
1/2 tomato, seeded and chopped
1/3 cup jalapeno almonds, chopped
1/4 cup diced red onion
3 strips cooked bacon, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons sour cream
1 teaspoon minced garlic
Juice of 1/2 lime, Salt and pepper, to taste
In small bowl,
mix all ingredients.
Serve with tortilla chips.

Brown Sugar Spice Party Mix
6 cups Vanilla
Chex cereal
1/2 cup whole roasted almonds
1/2 cup whole roasted cashews
2 tablespoons butter or
margarine
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons dark
corn syrup
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 cup gluten-free yogurt-covered cranberries or
yogurt-covered raisins
Measure cereal and nuts into large microwavable bowl; set
aside. In 2-cup microwavable measuring cup, microwave butter
on high 30 seconds; stir and microwave 30 seconds longer or
until butter is melted. Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup and spices.
Heat until boiling, about 30 seconds. Pour over cereal mixture,
stirring until evenly coated. Microwave uncovered on high about
3 minutes, stirring every minute, until mixture is glazed. Cool 5
minutes; stir in cranberries. Spread on waxed paper to cool.
Store in airtight container.
