Principal’s Message
Dear Families,
We are now already in the
Second Quarter, and also in the
second week of our ParentTeacher Conferences. Thank you
for taking the time from your
busy schedules to attend these
very important meetings. Please
remember that the student
report card serves as only one
component of a comprehensive
communication system.
(continue on next page)
Just a Reminder…… Every Wednesday is Manana or College Tshirt Day Office Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Manana Parent Bulletin #4 / Page 2 of 20
Principal’s Message (continues)
The other parts of the system include daily assignments, homework,
communication via the planners, projects, progressfolios, classroom/school
newsletters/emails, the school website, and teacher links to the school
website.
The annual Mass Evacuation Drill is scheduled for Wednesday,
November 19. We will be walking to the Trinity United Church (1716 Komo
Mai Drive) and then returning. Manana Elementary has TWO evacuation
sites: Trinity United Methodist Church and Manana Community Park
(Waimano Home Road). Why do we have 2 sites in opposite directions from
the school? The reason is that if we ever need to evacuate the school, we do
not want to be “down wind” from any chemicals or debris in the air.
Speaking of safety, I must continue to post this reminder because it
continues to be a concern. There is NO supervision of students before 7:45
am, or after school ends. A number of students are either being dropped off
or are walking on to the campus very early. Some students are waiting
outside of the office over an hour after school ends. The health and safety
of our students is of the utmost importance!
Our students are participating in WeVoteHawaii 2014 (formerly known
as Kids Voting Hawaii), so I hope you had the chance to talk to your
child(ren) about the candidates running for the different offices. Students
have been voting in the computer lab. Please exercise YOUR civic
responsibility and VOTE!
Finally, even in these difficult economic times, we ALL have a lot to be
thankful for, so please help your child(ren) know and understand that. The
holiday season will soon be upon us, and that can sometimes lead to additional
stress on families, especially on the children.
Aloha,
Bryan Loo

Grade 6 Career Day Grade 6 students and parents enjoyed an exciting and informative Career Day on Friday, October 24 as nearly 20 dynamic presenters from 12 different industries shared about their professions. Students thoroughly enjoyed listening to the presenters and asking thoughtful questions. At the pharmacy stations, students got to practice filling prescriptions with real pharmacy tools. At the U.S. Marshal station, students tried on the handcuffs, shackles, vests and shields. What an unforgettable experience! Mahalo to the many families who generously donated leis and refreshments. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the outstanding presenters: Health Services Career Pathway • Lana Young, Pharm.D., Kaiser Permanante Hawaii • Kristina Lo, 4th year pharmacy Student John A. Grade 6 Career Day (continue) Business, Management, and Technology Career Pathway • Jordan Little, Commercial Development Manager, Haleakala Solar Company Not only did students enjoy Career Day, the presenters themselves were quite impressed with the quality of our students. These are some of their responses: "What an awesome and organized event this past Friday. I wanted to sit in on some of the presenters myself. The children came with great questions and were so well‐behaved. Thank you for the lei and refreshments!” – Annabelle Bolter, Deputy US Marshal "I appreciate the opportunity to share my duty as a truck driver with your students. As a former student of Manana Elementary, I’m happy to come and share with the students.” – Dillon Lepolo, truck driver, A&M Trucking “We had a wonderful time sharing our field of pharmacy and its varying roles with such bright, young, and eager minds! We hope the day helped students discover new interests or expand on current interests as they work towards achieving their future goals.” – Lana Young, R.Ph., Pharm.D., Pharmacy Resident, Kaiser Permanente I (continue on next page) Manana Parent Bulletin #4 / Page 7 of 20
Grade 6 Career Day (continue) "I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet the students. They were very engaged and inquisitive, and they came with very well thought‐
out questions. They are going to be excellent candidates for their chosen careers one day!” Jessie Radovich, Agriculture Administrative Specialist, Waialua Parent Seed, DuPont "I enjoyed talking to the students about my career and the path it took to get there. The students were great. The questions they asked assured me that they were already on the right path. I was also happy to see the parents there. Having a “Career Day” is a good idea because it exposes the students to various careers from those who are in those careers. Hopefully, it gives the students a better understanding of why their education is important and where it can take them.” ‐Carey Chinen, nuclear mechanical engineer SAVE THIS DAY!!!

Hi Manana! Remy Kubota your President
reporting with info on two of the many fabulous
teachers we have.

Let’s start off with Mrs. Luster who teaches the 5th grade.
Mrs. Luster has been teaching at Manana for twenty years, and
before those twenty years, she always knew she wanted to be a
teacher because she used to pretend she was one when she was
young.
Now, do you know some of Mrs. Luster’s favorite things?
Well, she loves shopping at Macy’s, she loves the book “The
Grapes of Wrath” and as a child she loved the movie “Grease”.
Now to the New York Patriots team, Mrs. Luster is their #1
fan.
(Continued on the next page)
Manana Parent Bulletin #4 / Page 18 of 20
(continue)
Mrs. Luster believes that the upside of being a teacher is
watching her students learn and grow. So, a message she has to
all of her students is “Challenge yourself everyday. It’s really
not hard, and in the end, the success you achieve, will be
amazing.”

Another one of our fabulous teachers is Mr. Paragoso.
Just like Mrs. Luster, he has been teaching here for twenty
years. What got him into teaching were inspirational people in
his life like his band teacher, Mr. Retzack.
You might not now much about Mr. P., but he loves to
travel, loves action movies, and some of his favorite
instruments to play are the piano, the flute, and his voice. He
loves to play classical music. (Continued on next page)
Manana Parent Bulletin #4 / Page 19 of 20

Now, there’s no easy part about a job, but Mr. P. thinks the
hardest part about his job is that he doesn’t have enough time
to teach us.
It’s a new year, and we might not know much about our
teachers, but teaching is probably one of the things they love
the most. Well, that concludes our teacher inside stories for
this month.
THE FACULTY AND STAFF OF
MANANA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE
A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
