As we close
out 2014 I
would like to
thank the
membership
for the help
with
our
events in the
past year. We
had a good year and I look forward
to an even better year in 2015.
Again, thanks to all the members
that helped with our events this year.
Your worked is appreciated even if
we don’t say so that often.
We will be setting the schedule of
events for next year in the coming
weeks. Keep checking the web site
for the 2015 dates. They will also be
posted on the bulletin board at the
field and in the future issues of the
Contacts.
As a reminder: the Icicle Fly In
is January 1 st ; the member’s
Appreciation Dinner is January 24th;
and Swap-N-Shop is February 7th.
Remember the Appreciation Dinner
is a potluck affair with KCRC
providing the BBQ beef and fried
chicken. I know that Duane Hulen
will need lots of help at the Swap-NShop event.
I hope to see everyone at the
Club meeting on the 17th.

SAFETY BRIEFING
2
BY SUSAN CALVIN, SAFETY OFFICER
Recently I was at a business where several friends
who work there were decorating for a special
occasion. The problem was that they were
standing on chairs to reach the ceiling to attach
the various decorations. Naturally, this
immediately got my attention and red flags went
up. I got them to agree to stop what they were
doing until I could bring them a couple of
ladders. They agreed, and I went home. The
next day I supplied the necessary ladders and
they soon had the decorations up, without
accident.
We’re going into the time of year when there
will be a lot of decorating, as well as
seasonal chores around the house.
Christmas and New Year are
coming soon and many of us will
be putting up lights, trees and other
decorations. Other chores include
cleaning gutters and other last
minute ‘Honey-do’s” before
winter shuts us in. Like my
friends, there will be a tendency to
stand on chairs, or other furniture
to get these chores done. I strongly
urge you to avoid such temptations. Chairs and
other furniture are for sitting and reading
airplane books, not standing and reaching, and
falling. Outside some of us will use ladders or
other tools that may be defective, or at least a
little shaky. And we may be tempted to do our
chores without the help of assistants to keep us
safe. Do I really need to say, “Don’t!”
Accident statistics this time of year will likely
tell us that lots of people get hurt, and even killed
by falling off chairs or defective ladders. Others
will be injured by falling objects like storage
boxes or other stored items, unsecured tools, tree
limbs, etc., etc. You know the drill, we’ve all been
there. And we all know better. There is nothing
we need to do around the house that is so
important that we can afford to take short cuts to
get it done. So, take your time, consider the
consequences of what you’re doing, and take
whatever measures necessary to safely do your
seasonal chores. That includes involving others
in our activities. It’s always good to have others
around to let us know if we’re about to do
something we shouldn’t, or to help us if we get
into trouble. Perhaps many of you remember the
old Ozzie & Harriet show on TV where Ozzie
used an aluminum ladder to get on his roof, only
to get stranded when the wind blew the ladder
down. On TV that was funny. In real life such
things can be life threatening. A little prior
planning, and the involvement of friends and
family, can go a long way in helping us avoid
similar situations.
While you’re at it, take a look around your
shop. Winter is the time when we transition from
flying to fixing/building. Over the summer many
of us have allowed our work area to get cluttered
and even neglected. Now it’s time to reorganize
and get started on next year’s airplane(s). For me
that means sorting out tools, building materials,
supplies and any other “junk” that has collected
over the past few months. Over the past few days
I have discovered that a lot of chemicals I use for
model building have become old and outdated.
And there is a lot of balsa, hardwood, plans and
ongoing projects that need sorting out. For many
of us there are engines to clean and radios/
servos/control linkages and other items that need
our attention. That reminds me of the old adage
that a clean shop is a safe shop. So, look around,
gather up things that are no longer needed or
useful and throw them out. Then plan your next
trip to the hobby shop for new/fresh stuff to
keep you busy over the winter building season.
Then get busy on that new giant scale warbird
you’ve been dreaming about for the longest time.
See you at the field next spring with all your
body parts, and planes, intact.

MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER CLUB MEETING
The November 19th KCRC club meeting, held at
the EAA Hanger at the Lee’s Summit Airport,
was called to order by President Craig White at
7:00 P.M. The other officers in attendance were
Vice-President Duane Hulen, Treasurer Tom
Safley and Secretary John Midgorden. There
were twenty-nine members present.
OFFICER’S REPORTS:
President
Craig welcomed everyone.
The minutes of the October club meeting
were approved as published in the Contacts.
Dan Olson suggested we move through the
business quickly in order to get to the
mailing.
Vice-President
Duane mentioned that the Appreciation
Dinner has been moved later in January to
the 24th. He also reported that every thing
was on schedule related to the Swap-N-Shop
event on February 7th.
Treasurer
Tom reported that he had send a payment to
John Knox for the Swap-N-Shop fee.
Secretary
No report.
OLD BUSINESS:
Ed Baucom reported that he had negotiated
with the EAA for the use of their facility to
hold club meetings in 2015.
NEW BUSINESS:
Craig mentioned again the change in date
for the Appreciation Dinner and confirmed
that Dan Olsen will be buying the meat for
the potluck.
Craig indicated that event dates for next year
need to be determined. He mentioned the
National Model Aviation Day, Warbird Fun
Fly, 3-D Aerobatics, and a possible control
line event. Craig will look at his schedule and
determine a time during the December 8th
week for a board meeting to work next year’s
events schedule.
Duane brought up again his desire that we
have a regularly weekly schedule next
summer designated as a Training Evening.
He indicated the need for some members to
commit to this kind of activity so that we can
provide flight training for new members.
Tom recommended that the club pay for the
equipment that Bob Deskins and Charles
Godfrey would need to make the Club
trainer flyable. This is the model donated by
Susan Calvin last month. Motion approved.
Jim had reported that he had driven his dad
and mom to the AMA headquarters a couple
of weeks ago to donate the original (see page
4) Bootstraps RC model that his dad had
built back in the 50’s. The AMA museum did
not have a copy of this particular model.
Mike Ryken told the group that a solution
has been found for widening the entry onto
the runway for very large models. The posts
will be sawed off and hinged so they can be
lowered to the ground, thus enabling large
models easier access to the runway.
PROGRAM
The rest of the meeting was used to prepare the
Swap-N-Shop mailing. Following the work of
preparing the mailing Jimmy Cianciolo showed
photos of his family’s trip to AMA Headquarters
in Muncie, Indiana.
Respectfully submitted,
John Midgorden, Secretary

JOHN CIANCIOLO DONATES ANTIQUE MODEL TO AMA MUSEUM
John
Cianciolo is a long time KCRC member
and my dad. He recently donated his 1950’s
Berkeley Bootstraps RC airplane to the National
Model Aviation Museum in Muncie, Indiana.
The final flight for this historic model began
decades ago.
The RC Bootstraps was designed by AMA
Hall of Fame member Henry Struck in 1952.
Struck first designed the plane as a free flight for
the 1950’s PAA Payload competition sponsored
by Pan American Airlines. The contest was
simple. Keep adding payload to the model and
whomever could take off with the most weight
won. The Bootstraps won the event in 1950 in
New York.
Struck redesigned the Bootstraps to carry the
heavy batteries and vacuum tube receiver of the
early single channel RC systems. Berkeley Models
kitted the design in 1952. It was one of the very
first kits designed expressly for radio control. It
has a 54” wingspan and is powered by a Class A
engine (.09 to .19). It sold for around $4.95. With
its high lift polyhedral wing, tricycle landing gear
and removable radio compartment, it became
extremely successful.
John C’s Berkeley Bootstraps was his second
RC plane. Around 1958, he inherited it from a
friend who began the build but couldn’t finish it.
He completed the
airframe covering
it with parachute
silk and dope. He
powered it with a
Fox .15 control
line engine. The
ground based
radio transmitter
was designed by
Les Tindall, another long time KCRC and 49th
Jumbo Squadron member. Les worked on
avionics for TWA. The receiver, control sick and
rudder actuator came from Paul Runge of ACE
R/C in Higginsville, MO.
The Bootstraps had many successful flights.
The favorite flying site was at the old Heart of
America airport located in the Blue River
bottoms west of the Royals Stadium. I also
remember dad flying it at Lake Jacomo when the
field was located on the east side of the fly over
area. The pilots looked west right into the
afternoon sun. Soon the field was moved to the
current location.
The final flights were probably in 1966. I was
eleven years old. We took the plane to a large
school yard. Dad hand launched the ship and
flew her out of gas. He landed right on the
playground pavement not far from our gear. I
knew my Dad was an ACE!
The second flight was equally successful until
the radio stopped working. She was flying away.
My brother and I took off running after her
while Dad tried
to get her to
turn back.
When the
engine quit,
he regained
radio control,
but the plane
came down far
from the launch point. We looked and looked and
looked. We returned home long after dark. We
had lost the Bootstraps.
The next day, Dad returned to the area to
search. In a new residential development, where
the roads were graded, but not yet paved, he
found the lost plane. She landed herself in the
middle of a freshly graded road. She was
unscathed. The old girl was retired. She hung for
many years, first in Dad’s shop and then in mine.
Last spring, I contacted the National Model
Airplane Museum at AMA Headquarters

Muncie. The Museum does not accept every
offering. Donations are evaluated by an
acquisition committee who determine if the item
is needed to complete the museum’s inventory. We
offered the Bootstraps to the museum.
We received an enthusiastic reply accepting
the Berkeley Bootstraps and radio equipment.
The acquisition
committee agreed
about the importance
of the design and
said the museum did
not have one and had
wanted one for the
collection. They were
also pleased that Dad
had owned it for nearly sixty years and knew the
complete history.
We delivered the plane to the Museum on
November 3rd. We were met by Maria VanVreede,
acquisitions chairperson. She took many photos
and notes about the Bootstraps, the radio and the
history. She gave us a personal tour of museum
including the backroom storage area. The
museum has over 1500 planes, of which 95%
have flown. They display about 400 in the
showroom, rotating the items to keep the displays
5
fresh and to protect the planes from continuous
exposure.
Dad had to sign donation papers attesting that
he was the legal owner and that he relinquished
all ownership rights to the Museum. Our day at
the Museum was
delightful and we
were all proud to
be a little part of
the history of
model aviation.
No visit to the
National Model
flying site would be
complete without turning a little fuel into noise.
Even though it was cold and windy, we went to
one of the many runways and Dad and I flew my
trusted Sig Rascal to cap off the day. And “yes”, I
did drag the wingtip down the runway.
A trip to the AMA National Flying Site and to the
Model Airplane Museum should be on every
modelers bucket list. It is fascinating to learn
about the history of both the models and the
people of our hobby. When I return someday,
maybe the Bootstraps will be on display.
