The Department for Work and Pensions
(DWP) decides who receives each
allowance and you need to have at
least 12 months remaining on your award
to lease a product through Motability.
Parents can apply on behalf of a child
aged 3 or over, who receives the
allowance, but only the person in receipt
The Government has started to
replace Disability Living Allowance
(DLA) for disabled people between the
ages of 16 and 64 with a new benefit
called Personal Independence Payment
(PIP). DLA will continue to be available
until children reach the age of 16 and
for those who were aged 65 and over
on 8 April 2013. The DWP will contact
you when you need to start your

We arrange for the relevant amount
of your allowance to be paid direct to us
every four weeks. And as most products
cost less than your weekly allowance, you
will directly receive the remainder of your
allowance to spend however you choose.
Your responsibilities
All we ask in return is that you take
good care of the product and that it is
used for your benefit.

6 CHOOSING YOUR PRODUCT
Which one is
right for you?
Here is a quick guide to the types of products
available. You will also find a selection of
products and their prices later in this guide.
A scooter is probably the right choice if you
can travel relatively independently, get on
and off on your own, and want to take trips
to local shops or visit family and friends.
There are three types of scooter and you’ll
find more about them on pages 14-16:
Small Light, easy to transport but
limited distance
Medium Carry more weight, sturdier, some are road legal
Large Bigger, road-legal,
for longer distances
A powered wheelchair may be the right
choice if you need mobility assistance
throughout the day or around the home;
cannot get on or off seats easily or can only
operate joystick controls.

Above all, we recommend that you try
any scooter or powered wheelchair in the
environment that you will use it, to ensure
it meets your needs.
Thoroughly discuss your needs with the
dealer and do not feel pressured to choose
there and then. It’s a good idea to have a
trusted family member or friend with you
for a second opinion.
Tailoring your choice with optional extras
Your scooter will automatically be provided
with a weatherproof storage cover, and
many models come with a storage basket.
There are also many other accessories
available at an extra cost including storage
units, ramps, crutch and cup holders. Just
ask your dealer for advice.

Benefits of
worry-free mobility
Breakdown recovery
If you break down or get a puncture that
prevents you from being able to get home,
our partners at Motability Assist will help
get you, and your scooter or powered
wheelchair home so your dealer can do
the necessary repairs.
Insurance cover
You are covered in case of an accident,
damage or theft, with no excess to pay.
The insurance also covers you against
any damage caused by your scooter or
powered wheelchair to other products,
property or people.
Battery replacement
Your scooter will come with a battery as
standard so all you have to do is keep it
charged. However, if anything goes wrong

Specialist dealers ready to help you
It’s very important to us that you choose
the scooter or powered wheelchair that’s
right for you. That’s why we work with
specially trained dealers in your area to
ensure that there are people who can visit
you to discuss the products available,
as well as provide servicing, maintenance
and repairs throughout your lease.
They will come and visit you
To make sure you get the scooter or
powered wheelchair that is right for you,
your dealer will be happy to come to your
home with a selection of products for you
to try. They’ll assess your needs and see
how the scooter or powered wheelchair
fits around your home and lifestyle.
Alternatively, you can visit a dealer
showroom to see a range of models. Your
dealer will still do an assessment at your
home to make sure it’s the right product
for your lifestyle.

10 HOW TO ORDER
Placing an order
When it comes to placing your order
your Motability dealer will take care
of everything. Here’s how it works:
1. To make ordering quick and simple,
it is completed through our online system
at the dealership. If you are at home, the
dealer will take your information and place
the order on your behalf.
2. Your allowance will be held by the
Department for Work and Pensions or
Veterans UK from the date your dealer
expects you to take delivery of your new
scooter or powered wheelchair. If for any
reason the delivery date is delayed, any
monies owed will be paid back to you
after your new scooter or powered
wheelchair is delivered.
3. Your dealer will take you through a couple
of forms to make sure that Motability, and
your product, are right for you now, and
throughout the course of your lease.

4. We’ll send you a PIN (Personal
Identification Number) which you will
need to enter when collecting your scooter
or powered wheelchair to confirm the
start of your lease. Alternatively, you can
authorise the dealer to enter this on
your behalf.
5. Upon delivery, the dealer will take you
through a full demonstration of your
product, including a test drive to make sure
it suits your needs. You will also get full
details of your lease and insurance cover as
well as a handbook to support you through
your lease.
Make sure you are safe!
When out and about do not forget the
Highway Code. There is a special section
dedicated to scooters and powered
wheelchairs (rules 36-46). Full details

How we get you
the best prices
Our prices are negotiated and updated
every three months so that we can
provide you with the best offers from
each manufacturer.
The prices listed here are for orders placed
between 1 October – 31 December 2014.
The price you agree with your dealer when
you apply is the price you pay, even if it
changes before you collect your product.
Most of the models available cost less
than your weekly mobility allowance,
which means you will continue to receive
the difference.
As we continue to work towards
improving the value of our worry-free
lease package, all our products now
require an upfront non-refundable
payment, which we call an ‘Advance
Payment’. This will be £25, except for
some high specification powered
wheelchairs, where this payment may
be a little bit more. Your dealer will
be able to talk you through the Advance
Payment applicable to your lease.

How to use the pricing tables
DLA/PIP/WPMS Holders
Speed in miles
per hour (mph)
The cost of each product may differ
depending on whether you receive the
Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC),
of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA); the
Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component
(ERMC) of Personal Independence Payment
(PIP); or the War Pensioners’ Mobility
Supplement (WPMS). Armed Forces
Independence Payment recipients should
refer to PIP prices. Prices are based on
a three year lease agreement.
Product weight
The weight of the product
may have an impact on your
ability to transport it.
This is the maximum speed each
model can travel at. All products
capable of greater than 4mph will
have controls that allow you to limit
the speed to 4mph on pavements.
Maximum range
This is the maximum range the
product will travel once fully
charged. This range is an
estimation only and will vary
by use, the type of ground, the
weight carried by the product,
the condition of the motor
and the charge level of the
battery. Make sure you take into
account your return journeys.
Number of wheels
The number and dimensions of
a scooter’s wheels and tyres has
a direct effect on its stability and
ability to tackle obstacles.
Class
Description
This gives you the range
and model name.
Class
Class 2 products are limited to 4mph and
are suitable for pavement use only. Class 3
products are able to travel up to 8 mph, need
to be taxed and can be used on some roads.

The non-refundable amount payable
up front to your dealer in addition to
your four weekly mobility allowance.
Weekly rental
Shows the relevant amount of your
weekly allowance (either DLA, PIP or
WPMS) that each product will cost.
Payments will be made directly to
Motability Operations every four
weeks. T/A stands for “Total
Allowance” and means that the
total amount of higher rate mobility
allowance is payable in exchange
for your product.
Weight Capacity
This is the maximum weight that the
product is designed to safely carry.
We recommend that you try any
scooter or powered wheelchair in
the environment that you will use
it regularly, before you commit,
to ensure it meets your needs.
The small print
• All scooters and powered wheelchairs
are subject to availability.
• The contract hire prices contained within
this guide are subject to change on
a quarterly basis.
• You need to have at least 12 months’ award
remaining to be eligible for a Motability
contract hire lease.
• Insurance and loss and damage protection
is included in the contract hire scheme.

MEDIUM – Midrange scooters (Class 2 and Class 3 up to 6mph)
Class
Medium sized scooters are generally sturdier than
smaller scooters, but are not as easy to fold or
dismantle so may be more difficult to transport in
a car (speak to your dealer to find out which models
you can dismantle). Class 3, 6mph scooters in this
