HIMALAYAN MIRROR NORTHEAST GANGTOK, FRIDAY 26 DECEMBER 2014 Chetia repatriation after wanted criminal is sent to Bangladesh Tripura tribal party denies demand of separate state Agartala , Dec 25 : Tribal based opposition Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) has denied the demand of separate tribal state within the state of Tripura in the name of “Twipra land”. Talking to media INPT General Secretary Jagadish Debbarma today said ahead of election to Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), a section of tribals has been raising the demand of a separate state, which is nothing but an instigation to crack the communal fabric. “INPT neither raised such an irrational issue before nor supported the argument of creation of community, caste, language or religion based state in India. This will not only dilute the core issue of the backward tribals, but create fresh tension,” Mr Debbarma stated. Arunachal sounds high alert afterAssam violence Itanagar , Dec 25 : Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday sounded a high alert after a series of attacks by suspected NDFB(S) militants at Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of n e i g h b o r i n g Assam.Besides, the home department has issued directives to the deputy commissioner and SPs of all the districts bordering Assam to keep a strict vigil on possibility of ultras sneaking into the state’s territory after the massacre, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki told reporters here.“All the available paramilitary forces have also been instructed by the department to conduct patrolling along the border areas,” he said. Condem-ning the incident, Tuki expressed solidarity with the families who lost their near and dear ones. Referring to the directives of the chief secretary and DGP to seal the border and advising people not to visit Assam because of the volatile situation, Tuki said the directive was issued for a brief period so that people travelling to the neighbouring state would not face harassment. He, however, pointed out that unless development plans for tribals are not being implemented properly and socio-economic conditions of poor tribals are not upgraded, separate state can’t help the tribal communities. Mr Debbarma further stated that in earlier election, INPT had an alliance with the Congress but in the ADC election scheduled in June next year, the party will fight alone against ruling CPI(M). However, if there is a scope for greater coalition against leftists, INPT will extend support, he added. “We have decided that fighting with Congress is not beneficial to us. In past 10 years when Congress led UPA govt was at the centre, INPT had raised several issues for strengthening of ADC and development of tribals but they did nothing towards the demand except mobilizing the party for electoral politics,” he maintained. INPT delegation had met Home Minister Rajnath Singh to pursue the longstanding eight point charter of demands for empowerment of ADC on December 15 last. He assured to raise the demands of INPT in the next session of Parliament. “More power to ADC includes financial autonomy and direct funding to ADC by the central government, to include Kokborok in 8th schedule of the Consti-tution and proper implemen-tation of tribal development program besides, upgra-dation of social infrastruc-ture in tribal infested hilly areas to remove the sense of isolation,” Mr Debbarma underlined. Guwahati , Dec 25 : Ulfa general secretary Anup Chetia could finally be heading home from 'protective custody' in Bangladesh immediately after Nur Hossain, a wanted Bangladeshi criminal now imprisoned in Kolkata, is sent to the neighbouring country for trial. A source said India has confirmed to Bangladesh that it would hand over Hossain within this month under the newly signed Tuki-led Congress ministry expanded, one dropped Itanagar , Dec 25 : Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki on Wednesday expanded his ministry by inducting three and drop-ping one member into his seven-month-old council of ministry in a simple function held at Raj Bhawan, here. Mr Tuki is serving the state as Chief Minister for the second consecutive term since November 2011, replacing former Chief Minister late Jarbom Gamlin through a political turmoil in the government. Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma admini-stered the oath of office and secrecy to the legislators in the presence of Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, MLAs and other high government officials. Earlier, Mr Lowangdong served as the Speaker of State Legislative Assembly in previous Tuki government. He was elected from Bordumsa-Diyun Assembly constituency in Changlang. However, Rajesh Tacho, representing Anini Assembly segment in Dibang Valley district, was the Minister of Urban Develop-ment, Town Plan-ning and Fisheries in the earlier ministry, but did not get a berth in the present ministry. He was elected on INC ticket from Liromoba constituency in West Sinag district of Arunachal Pradesh. Portfolios of the new inducted Ministers will be allotted by this evening, informed Mr Tuki, on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony. extradition treaty between the two countries. "This is not an exchange (Chetia for Hossain). Hossain is an undertrial prisoner in Kolkata and will be sent to Bangladesh for trial. Chetia has completed his sentence for illegally entering Bangladesh and possessing foreign currencies. He is in protective custody offered by the Bangladesh judiciary after he expressed a threat to his life," the source said. The source added, "India wants Chetia and technically he will be repatriated." Chetia is wanted in several cases of terrorism, including the killing of a superintendent of police. Chetia, whose real name is Golap Baruah, is the brain behind the birth of Ulfa in 1979 and is Paresh Baruah's cousin brother. The anti-talks faction of the outfit (UlfaIndependent), led by Paresh Baruah, had earlier written a letter to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requesting that Chetia should not be swapped with Bangladeshi criminals. The outfit urged Hasina that Chetia be handed over to India through a decent repatriation mechanism as he has volunteered for the same. Christmas celebrated with zeal and fervour in northeast Aizawl/Kohima/Agartal a, Dec 25 (IANS) : Christmas was celebrated Thursday across northeast India with special prayers, hymns, and mass in churches, besides the traditional spread of delicious food. Over 5.3 million Christians live in Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur while there are a significant number of Christians in the other northeastern states. The celebrations began from Wednesday night with church services and fellowships where the congregation sang Christmas carols - both western and local songs, composed by the local spiritualists and composers. In Mizoram capital Aizawl, police officials said the Christmas eve celebrations Wednesday night were completely peaceful. "Heavy security arrangements have been made in the capital city (Aizawl) and other parts of the state to hold the festivity peacefully," senior police official L.R. Dingliana Sailo told reporters. The traditional festive spirit was evident everywhere as Aizawl city and other places of Mizoram were bathed in decorations and illuminations. Praise and worship services marked the Christmas and community feasts would be held Thursday and Friday in most of the villages and localities of the urban areas. The festive spirit has also gripped the plains, hills and valleys of Nagaland as Christmas celebrations started with the stroke of midnight when church bells rang, signalling the birth of Jesus Christ. Churches, private and government buildings, schools, markets and homes have been decked up and illuminated in Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung and several other towns and villages of predominantly Christian Nagaland. Shoppers have been thronging markets for the last few days, while people staying elsewhere and students pursuing academic careers in other states have returned their hearths and homes join the festivities. Various state governments in the region have announced holidays for several days to enable the people to join Christmas celebrations. Governors and chief ministers of the northeastern states have wished the people on the occasion.
