WMCC Receives Five-Year Approval
for Its Updated Nursing Program
White Mountains Community College
in Berlin is poised to accept its freshman
nursing class in the fall of 2015, after the
N.H. Board of Nursing granted full
approval to the program for five years.
Throughout the past 18 months,
WMCC’s nursing faculty have been
engaged in a complete overhaul and
redesign of the program, to include
restructuring curriculum and better alignment of the curriculum with the changing
demands of the profession. Their efforts
paid off this week, as the N.H. Board of
Nursing granted the program at WMCC
full approval for the next five years. The
Nursing class of 2014 has been working
equally hard, and the pass rate for the

In June of last year, the nursing program

afterward the college temporarily suspended the program, allowing time to address

the new program is that students may pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing,

January 17-19, with each town hosting a
different stage of the race.
The three-day event will kick off with a
Meet the Mushers Banquet at the
Mahoosic Inn in Milan, at 6 p.m. on
Friday, January 16. The official race start
is at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, January
17, also at the Mahoosic Inn. On Sunday
the mushers will compete in Pittsburg, and
on Monday, January 19 the race will finish
with a 45-mile loop that begins and ends
at the Colebrook Country Club in
Colebrook.
The winner will be determined by
adding together the times required to complete each of the three stages. There will
also be a separate, 20-mile race in
Colebrook on Monday the 19th for sixand eight-dog teams. Awards will be presented at the Colebrook Country Club at 3
p.m. on January 19.
The positive feedback from last year’s
race has sparked considerable interest in
the mushing community, according to
organizers. “This was even harder than the
Can-Am 30!” said Peter Franke of New
Durham, winner of the 2014 six-dog Great
North Woods Sled Dog Challenge. Dog
mushers from Québec to Pennsylvania are
already registered to compete for this
year’s purse of over $3,000.
A “Meet the Mushers” dinner will be
held on the night before each stage of the
race in the towns involved, and these

Essex Conservation District Receives
Grant to Expand Brunswick Nursery
NOT THE USUAL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT
Dr. Seuss’ and Charles Dickens’ Christmas stories were melded when Stratford Public School
students performed “A Seussified Christmas Carol” last Thursday, December 11 before a crowd
of about 150 appreciative folks. Jesse King (right) had the lead role as a Grinch-like Mr. Scrooge,
and he is seen here making it clear to collectors for the poor—played by Nickalus Narducci and
Emily Laney—that no help would be coming from him.

The Essex County Natural Resource
Conservation District recently received a
$4,750 grant from the Vermont
Community Foundation’s Northeast
Kingdom Fund to expand and purchase
equipment for its Conservation Tree and
Shrub Nursery in Brunswick.
The nursery’s mission is to produce
seedlings from local genetic stock for
riparian forest and lakeshore buffer
restoration plantings. Its native tree and
shrub stock will be utilized in these plantings, which will serve many goals including stabilization of stream banks, restoring
native plant communities, re-establishing
connectivity of habitat along riparian corridors, improving water quality, and preventing the spread of non-native plant
material in the landscape. These grant
funds will be used to increase inventory
and to purchase necessary tillage and
mowing equipment.
The Northeast Kingdom Fund is a permanent philanthropic resource dedicated
to supporting the people and communities
of Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties.
Its grants are decided by a committee of
local residents, providing philanthropy for
the Kingdom, by the Kingdom.
The Essex County NRCD (www.essexcountynrcd.org) offers a resource to
landowners, farmers and towns, working
on environmental assessment, agricultural
conservation, education and other community conservation projects. Under its
partnerships with local, state and federal
agencies, the district coordinates existing
resources on a local level to ensure environmental quality and support the integrity of land-use practices in Essex County.
The Vermont Community Foundation is
a family of hundreds of funds and foundations established by Vermonters to serve
their charitable goals. It provides the
advice, investment vehicles, and backoffice expertise to make giving easy and
effective. More information is available
on-line at www.vermontcf.org or by calling 802-388-3355.

Past, Present, and Midge
By Midge Rosebrook
A Magical Weekend!
From January 31, 2013, to February 1st
and 2nd of 2014, it was, in Shane Beattie’s
words, “Magical.”
Our hard work paid off. What took years
of planning and promoting, the many long
nights laying down ice, the braving of
bone-chilling winds building a worldclass snowmobile speedway, all showed
the entire North Country what Lancaster
can do! It was a huge success from start to
finish. Sure there were glitches, but nothing dimmed the overall event.
Yes, I’m talking about the 50th reunion
of the Lancaster Grand Prix, a race some
believed would never return. High-speed
oval racing had disappeared from the
snowmobile scene some 35 years ago. But
after close to 4,000 fans watched vintage
ice racing sleds tickle the radar gun at 96
miles per hour, on the back stretch of a
quarter-mile speedway—well, pinch me! I
had assumed that this reunion was a onetime deal, and when it’s over, it’s over.
However, after some discussion by the
Grand Prix reunion committee members,
this successful event will return for 2015.
We felt that it was too important for our
North Country’s economy not to continue.
It could very well turn into a mega event
that could rival Eagle River’s “World
Championship Snowmobile Derby” in
future years!
We were, at one time back in the early to
mid-1970s, every bit as important as
Eagle River to the major manufacturers.
The status Lancaster enjoyed of being the
first town in the United States to introduce
the revolutionary Bombardier Ski-doo,
along with being the first to hold motorized toboggan races in 1962, automatically placed a bright red pin on the map of
places to send their fledgling race teams.
In 1971, we counted 12 fully equipped
tractor trailers, representing the largest
snowmobile manufacturers of the day,
lined up around the fairgrounds’ half-mile
race track! These huge teams showcased
the finest, most sophisticated race sleds,
ridden by the biggest names.
We have proof: Their names are
engraved on the base of the iconic
Kilkenny Cup, early snowmobile racing’s
Holy Grail.
This year’s track will be even larger.
Grand Prix chairman Shane Beattie has
taken some of the sharpness out of the corners, so the competitors can go into them
harder and faster. It’s no stretch to say that
the 100-m.p.h. barrier will be broken this
year!
This event is coming up fast, folks. We
are desperately looking for volunteers and
sponsors at this very moment. Large
events like this take many hands and
minds, so please plan to volunteer for this
worthwhile project. We need more youthful members to come on board—men and
women alike. Start a legacy of volunteerism your family can be proud of, and
show your kids how important it is to do
something, just for their community.
Businesses, put your name out there.
Sponsor a queen candidate or provide
something to raffle.
I find that whatever one gives in good
faith, to help others, you’ll always get
back, twice over. Lancaster has always
had a great tradition of involvement when
it comes to the common good. It’s no
secret, the more of Lancaster’s citizens
who step forward to help, the less the burden on all involved. The fresh air is free
and the work isn’t that hard, but the sleep
you’ll get knowing how important your
role was in making the North Country’s
largest outdoor winter event a success,
will be heavenly!
Please, become a Snow Drifter, come to
meetings, get involved. We meet at the
clubhouse on the first and third
Wednesdays of every month, at 7 p.m.
You don’t need to own a snowmobile—I
haven’t owned or ridden one for years. My
passion is this race, in this town, for this
North Country! I’m saying, make it your
passion as well. Show our midwestern
neighbors that Lancaster is one of the “Big
Dogs!”
CAR CLUB GIVES BACK
North Country Classics Car Club of Lancaster presented a $200 donation to the Colebrook Area
Food Pantry on December 22. “We hold our annual car show each July at the Holton House
Historical Society in Lancaster,” explained club president Don Winget, seen here with food
pantry administrator Cindy Grassi. “Thanks to our area businesses for their continued support,
we are able to support this great charity.”

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN APPEARS ON GOULD STREET
Bryce, Brody and Greyson Smith took advantage of the wet, heavy snow last week to build a very
large snowman. When asked why there were fire trucks around the snowman’s base, Bryce’s simple answer was, “I like fire trucks.” ‘Nuff said.

When They Saw the Star, They Rejoiced with Exceeding Joy
The year is 740 BC. The predicted prophecy of Isaiah 9:6 written in the Old
Testament. The birth of the Prince of Peace. For unto us a child is born, unto us a
son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and His name shall be
called Wonderful Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father,
The Prince of Peace.
The people that walk in darkness have seen a great Light: they that dwell in the
land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined; Isaiah 9:2
John 8:12; Jesus Christ is the Light of the World.
But how can we know the difference? The Bible says in 2 Corinthians
11:14; And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light?
The King James Holy Bible is our authority. The Northwood’s Christian Fellowship is
not affiliated with any church or denomination. KJV Bible Studies twice a month,
all welcome Wed. evenings. Request more info by writing;
