Photos by M.T. Brown Visiting the Giant Panda Habitat The giant pandas live here. Giant pandas are black and white bears. I may see many people visiting the giant pandas. There is a pathway that I can follow to help me find the pandas. I may see the pandas from different viewing areas. The pandas have indoor enclosures. The indoor enclosures may be empty, so I may see the pandas in their outdoor yards. Mei Xiang and Bao Bao are enjoying their yard. I may see the pandas walking around. I may see the pandas climbing trees. I may see the pandas in the trees. Sometimes, I may have to find them in the trees. I may see a spotting scope along the pathway. I may look through it to see the pandas. I may see the pandas eating. Giant pandas love to eat bamboo. Keepers give them bamboo every day. I may see them sleeping. I may see signs that tell me about the zoo’s giant pandas. I may see buttons in the panda house that I may press to hear sounds that pandas make. I may see a baby panda model that I may touch. It is very small. I may see a large panda sculpture that I may touch. I may see signs that tell me where to look for the pandas. I may see signs that tell me not to disturb an area. I may see signs that help to keep me safe. I may see a researcher looking at the giant pandas on screens. The researcher wants to know what the pandas are doing. There are interesting sights to see inside of the panda building. I may see a large shipping crate that was used to carry a panda from China. I may be able to look through a microscope to see something up close. I may see a crate that the pandas played with. The keepers put treats in the crate for the pandas to enjoy. I may see a sample of an ice-block with apple slices. The keepers give the pandas frozen treats like this to eat. I may see interactive displays that I can touch to learn about giant pandas. I may see a display with dials that I can turn to learn facts about pandas. I may see touch screens that I can explore too. There is so much to see and learn. I may see tools that are used when researchers study giant pandas in the wild. I may see a scale to weigh baby pandas. I may see a tool that helps a scientist find or track a panda in the wild. I may see a keeper or volunteer use a microphone to talk about the pandas. The sound may be loud. I may ask the keeper questions about the pandas. There are places to sit down and take a break. I will rest if I want to. The giant pandas live along Asia Trail at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. I may be able to see other exciting animals along this trail during my visit.
