easy or inexpensive solution that one may think. There
are many factors to consider before you invest in
recovering your piece or deciding to start from scratch
and purchase new.
Ask yourself why you want to reupholster your
furniture piece… Is it because you have an amazing
chair with a rich history that you would really like to
keep in the family? Maybe it is perfect in every single
way, except for the hideous rust colored fabric on the
seat… Is it tired and worn out, but it was an expensive,
high quality piece that you still love after having for
many years? These may be great reasons to justify
the expense and time that reupholstering will take.
However, if you are simply thinking that it must be less
expensive to get new fabric on the old furniture piece
than to purchase a new chair or sofa, you will be very
surprised!
There are many reasons why upholstery is pricey.
You are paying for both the materials and the labour
to get your piece refinished. Let’s use a chair for
our example. You are paying for the fabric and the

materials that will be used on the piece. The chair
may take approximately five yards of fabric for just the
one piece, depending on the size. Fabric often costs
upwards of $80/yard for a heavy duty, upholstery grade
fabric. There may also be design elements to the chair
such as piping, tufting, or wood legs and trim that need
to be replaced. These all add to the cost.
You need to find a very good upholsterer, one who
knows what they are doing and has done it many times
before. The majority of the cost is for the labor. A great
upholsterer can add many additional years to the life
of your chair. They will also address the interior
elements of the furniture piece. While you have the
chair deconstructed, they will look at replacing the
foam, springs, webbing and any other worn out
features. I strongly caution you against trying this
process yourself. It may sound tempting, but will
probably end in a DIY nightmare.
Before you make your decision to purchase new or
reupholster, weigh the facts, crunch the numbers, and
measure your true love for the piece. I am a huge fan
of repurposing or reusing items wherever possible, but
sometimes it makes more sense to buy new. Make sure
that you are well educated in the process and that you
are doing it for the right reasons. Good Luck!
