PREFACE 1.1 GENERAL The Efficiency Monitoring system is a microprocessor based instrument for use with the T-Sense® Optical Torque Sensor and TT-Sense® Thrust & Torque sensor. The T-Sense® is providing torque, shaft speed and power as input for the PEM 3 Efficiency Monitoring system. The TT-Sense® additionally provides thrust measurements as input. The PEM 3 Efficiency Monitoring system is supplied with a robust SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit, which can be connected to a large number of extra inputs like flowmeters, GPS, speedlog, or one additional T-Sense® or TT-Sense® in case of twin screw vessels. This completely unique and compact total solution can be used for simple to very complicated configurations. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION 2.1 PEM 3 EFFICIENCY MONITORING SYSTEM The PEM 3 Efficiency Monitor is equipped with an additional SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit. This monitoring system is able to calculate torque, speed and power output data and in addition the Signal Processing Unit can manage a maximum of 12 flowmeter inputs in combination with PT100 temperature inputs related to a maximum of 6 consumers. Furthermore a speed log pulse signal and GPS (NMEA) signal can be added as input to the system. The SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit converts all these input signals to one RJ45 Ethernet signal for monitoring purposes. A RS485 Modbus signal is available for connection to an external system like AMS (Alarm and Monitoring System) or to connect a separate PC running the optional PEM datalogger software. Functions, which can be performed with this PEM 3 Efficiency Monitoring system are: Measurement and display of torque, shaft speed and power. Calculation of average shaft power, shaft speed and torque during the last 1, 4 and 24 hours. Calculation of total energy, total revolutions and total CO2 emissions including reset. Calculation of fuel consumption in kg per nautical mile, fuel consumption in kg per hour, fuel consumption in gram per kWh (SFOC), average fuel consumption per nautical mile, fuel temperature compensation and calculation of total mass per fuel type per consumer including reset. Calculation of thrust, thrust power quotient, when a TT-Sense® Thrust & Torque sensor is installed. Displaying of parameters and engine load diagram. Above mentioned calculations for twin screw vessels when an additional T-Sense® or TT-Sense® optical sensor is installed. The SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit can be installed in the vicinity of the flow meter(s) and/or booster unit or in the engine control room. The PEM 3 touch screen can be installed in a control cabinet or control panel. Remark: Optional 4-20 mA analogue outputs can be integrated in the stator control box near the T-Sense® torque sensor. Please read paragraph 6.2 in TIB 661 for detailed information or read TIB-664 paragraph 6.5 in case of TT-Sense® torque/thrust sensor. 2.2 SYSTEM SECURITY Besides checking the status of the torque measurement system and/or flowmeters the PEM 3 Efficiency Monitoring system also checks itself continuously for program and configuration data integrity, normal program flow and power supply conditions. All alarm messages will be logged in a dedicated alarm screen. 4 3. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS There are no special safety instructions for the equipment. 5. UNPACKING Let the equipment acclimatize inside the closed box for at least one hour at the location where the system will be installed. When the equipment is taken out of the box, please leave the special protection supplied with the equipment as long as possible in place to avoid any damage. The special protection should be stored for the unlikely event the equipment has to be sent for repair. Dispose of the packing material should be done according to the laws of the country where the equipment is installed, or according to the rules that are applicable on the vessel. Be careful when unpacking the electronic equipment. The content is fragile. Do not press on the PEM 3 touch screen. Be careful not to damage any of the connectors, control modules or wiring. 6. INSTALLATION AND FIRST USE The PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system will be delivered with the software and correct data settings installed. First connect all the inputs and outputs to the components. The 110-230 volt and 24 volt wires for power supply should be connected at last. Note: There is no ON/OFF switch on PEM 3 touch screen. When the power supply is switched on the screen will turn on. Check if the inputs show any errors. If that is the case the connection(s) or connected equipment(s) should be checked and corrected. 6.1 TO RECORD NAMEPLATE DATA This information is required when contact the supplier for any reason. Date of delivery: xx xxxxxxx xxxx Serial number: xxxxxxxxx Hull number: xxx Type: PEM 3 monitoring system Software version: V0.xx 7 6.2 INSTALLATION DIAGRAMS The PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system, consisting of SPU 3 signal processing unit and PEM 3 touch screen, can be connected to the T-Sense® or TT-Sense® stator control box as shown in the typical examples in figure 2a and 2b. Figure 2a Example of T-Sense® torque sensor including PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system Figure 2b Example of TT-Sense® torque sensor including PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system and 2 touch screens 8 6.3 INSTALLATION OF THE PEM 3 EFFICIENCY MONITORING SYSTEM A PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system will be supplied when flowmeters, speed log/GPS/NMEA plus additional T-Sense® or TT-Sense® thrust/torque sensors are integrated in the system supplied by VAF. Above mentioned additional inputs have to be connected to the SPU 3 Signal Processing unit, which will perform all calculations and data processing. 1. Always install the SPU with cable glands facing downwards. Do not take electronics out of the cabinet. 2. Install the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit in the engine room, engine control room or near to the HFO booster units, but as much as possible free from moisture, large fluctuations of temperature and particularly of vibration shock. Also influences such as large magnetic fields must be avoided. Ambient temperature should under all circumstances be lower than 55°C (131°F). External dimensions drawings of the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit can be found in chapter 17. 3. Connect the RS485 Modbus output from the stator control box to the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit in accordance with the external connection diagram in paragraph 6.4. When there is one T-/TTSense® available please connect Modbus cable at the T-Sense® 1 connection (J1). 4. Connect the signal outputs from flow meters, speed log and/or shaft generator to the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit in accordance with the external connection diagram in paragraph 6.4 and drawing/table 0815-2019 in chapter 17. Cable shields of flowmeter cables should always be connected to the Signal Processing Unit only. 5. Connect the RJ45 Ethernet output from the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit to the PEM 3 touch screen in accordance with the connection diagrams in paragraph 6.4 and 17.1. 6. Ensure that all relevant signal cables are properly connected and grounded. 6. Connect the power supply to the SPU 3 and PEM 3 touch screen(s). Check if the output data is available on the touch screen(s). If any applicable output data is not available on the touch screen a pop-up alarm screen describing the failure(s) will show up. Important notes: Never connect cable shields at both ends to ground, but at one end only, to avoid earth loops. To avoid interference on the signal cables, such cables must be installed as far as possible from electric power cables used for power supply and stator. Ensure that the ambient temperature at the Signal Processing Unit never exceeds 55°C (131°F). 9 6.4 EXTERNAL CONNECTION DIAGRAM SPU 3 SIGNAL PROCESSING UNITS The table “Flowmeter numbers, description and position” at the inside of the SPU-3 cabinet, provides information regarding flow meter numbers, TAG numbers and flow meter configuration of the SPU 3. The number of backplanes differs per SPU 3 configuration. PT2 flowmeters should be connected to the SPU 3 according drawing/table 0815-2019 in chapter 17. Figure 4 Specification of input and output cables at Control box, SPU-3 Signal Processing Unit and PEM 3 touch screens 11 6.6 MODBUS CONNECTION TO EXTERNAL SYSTEM (AMS) OR DATALOGGER If applicable the PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system can be connected to an external system like AMS (Alarm and Monitoring System) or PEM 3 Datalogger through the Modbus slave output, which is at the Processor module in the SPU 3 cabinet. Comport settings for reading out the Modbus signal at SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit are: Communication protocol Serial interface BaudRate DataBits StopBits Parity Function code Modbus slave address Modbus RTU RS485 57600 8 1 None 3 (Holding Registers) 1 The Modbus output data is made available at two 16 bits integers which will have to be converted to 32 bits float according IEEE754. IEEE754 is a standard for binary floating point arithmetic. 6.7 ANALOG INPUT(S) FOR SHAFT GENERATOR POWER LEVEL The PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system is able to calculate the total power generated by the main engine(s) when shaft generators are incorporated in the vessel’s propulsion system. When the generators are positioned at the propeller shaft line (inline or tunnel gear type) or connected to the gearbox as a PTO (Power take off) the PEM 3 system can add up both propulsion power and the measured generator power in order to calculate the correct SFOC values per engine. In the SPU 3 (backplane nr. 1) 4-20 mA input signals can be connected representing the shaft generator power levels. You are able to adjust these shaft generator settings in the PEM 3 Settings menu. (Special user settings in paragraph 7.5, item 9) When 2 shaft generator outputs have to be connected to the PEM 3 please contact VAF. 12 7. OPERATING PRINCIPLES 7.1 GENERAL A zero setting procedure is always necessary in order to obtain a correct measurement and reading of the optical torque and thrust sensors. For more detailed information see paragraph 6.3 in TIB-661 of the T-Sense® Torque sensor and paragraph 6.4 in TIB-664 of the TT-Sense® Thrust & Torque sensor. The PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system is an integrated solution for monitoring engine power, fuel consumption and a wide selection of additional data and indicators. The PEM 3 system will display the engine load diagram and the actual load of the main engine. The menu structure of the PEM 3 system is self-explaining and the system is easy to operate. A number of conditional messages will inform you about error/fault conditions if applicable. Setups determining functionality are subdivided in two levels and access is only possible via a right-ofaccess code. All setups and computations are stored in a battery backup RAM. In this control box the signal is converted to a RS485 Modbus signal, which signal is connected to the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit. The sensor configuration is set as follows: Zero torque adjustment will be done during commissioning of the T-Sense® rotor and control box. Full scale adjustment of the bar graph range is programmed at VAF location. 7.3.2 Shaft speed The shaft speed is measured via a gravity sensor in the T-Sense® rotor part connected wireless to the stator electronics. The shaft speed output is connected to SPU-3 via RS485 Modbus. Full scale adjustment of the shaft speed and power bar graph range is programmed at VAF location. 7.3.3 Power The measured torque and shaft speed are the input values to the power calculation, which is performed in the T-Sense® stator control box. 7.3.4 Thrust (option) In case a TT-Sense® is installed, which additionally measures the axial displacement due to propeller thrust, the thrust values are converted to a RS485 Modbus signal in the same way as the torque and shaft speed outputs. 7.3.5 Shaft generator (option) The shaft generator output signal should be an active current signal of 4-20mA as a standard. The input range is programmed at VAF location. By taking into account the shaft generator power value, the total power delivered by the main engine can be calculated. (Total power = Shaft power + shaft generator power). Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC) value is calculated by dividing the engine’s fuel consumption by above mentioned Total power. 7.3.6 Fuel oil flow consumption (option) For this option 1 up to 12 flow meters for a maximum of 6 engines or consumers, each with a pulse transmitter, are required as input to the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit. The K-factor of each flowmeter is programmed at VAF location or can be set via the settings menu for VAF authorised representatives at the PEM 3 touch screen. 7.3.7 Fuel oil temperature (option) For accurate calculation of fuel consumption, it is recommended to connect PT100 sensors. One temperature sensor per flow meter line, is strongly recommended, when a supply/return system is programmed. VAF type PT2 flowmeters as a standard are equipped with these temperature sensors. The PT-100 sensors will be connected to the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit. The PT-100 range is programmed in the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit. No settings are needed. 14 7.3.8 Ship speed via GPS (option) The GPS signal is connected to the RS422 port of the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit. The ship speed over ground is hidden in the NMEA-0183 protocol. The PEM 3 system will read out $GPVTG sentence (“speed over ground”) and the value will be displayed in knots. No adjustments are possible. 7.3.9 Ship speed via pulse signal (option) In case the ship speed is measured with a (Doppler) speed log, the pulse output signal from the speed log’s potential free contact, is transmitted to the SPU 3 Signal Processing Unit. The ship speed range is programmed at VAF location or can be set via the settings menu for VAF authorised representatives at the PEM 3 touch screen (default: 200 pulses/nautical mile). 15 7.4 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS PEM 3 EFFICIENCY MONITORING SYSTEM 7.4.1 Operating menus The PEM 3 efficiency monitoring system includes the following operating menus: 7.4.1.1 The user mode For daily use: In this mode all relevant system menus are displayed. By touching the relevant keys softly the next screen can be displayed. By vertical and horizontal scrolling additional information will be shown. The Home screen in the PEM 3 user mode is the screen as shown below. The home screen is divided into 3 sections, Information, Signals and Settings. The Information section is divided into 5 submenu’s: Propulsion, Consumption, Totals, Engine load and Environment. The Signals section is divided into 4 submenu’s: Flows, T-Sense®, GPS and Shaft gen. Ticking these menu keys will allow you to look into all output data from sensors that are directly connected to the PEM 3 system like Flow meters, GPS and T-Sense® torque sensors. 16 7.4.1.2 The settings mode for users Only displayed after touching the ‘Settings’ key, entering your password (1234) and touching Logon. The settings mode for users is divided into 5 submenu’s: T-Sense®, Alarms, Engine load, Fuel type and Date time. The following data can be set in above mentioned submenu’s: As a standard the range settings of the Torque, Speed, Power and Thrust bar graphs at the PEM 3 touch screen and date and time settings. When fuel flowmeters are connected to the PEM 3 system, specific gravity, gravity change, CO2 conversion factor, caloric value and reference temperature can be set and internal fuel temperature alarms can be enabled or disabled. The load limits of the main engine can be set in the engine load submenu. Procedure for setting the engine load limits lines is described in paragraph 7.7 item 9. All other adjustments are only allowed in cooperation with VAF authorized representatives. The PEM 3 system will be discontinued from his operational functions, when the settings mode is selected. 7.4.1.3 The special user settings mode Only displayed after touching the ‘Settings’ key, entering your password (5678) and touching Logon. This mode is used to set the customized parameters. Only authorized personnel can determine the functionality (what is on the screen, what are the in- and outputs, etc.). These settings are programmed in our factory, on the basis of the process requirements specified by the customer. Process control will be interrupted when the PEM 3 is in this mode. WARNING: WRONG SETTINGS MAY RESULT IN SYSTEM FAILURE. VAF INSTRUMENTS B.V. WILL NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR OPERATIONS CARRIED OUT BY UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS. 17 7.5 HOW TO OPERATE THE TFT CAPACATIVE TOUCH SCREEN The PEM 3 touch screen is designed in such a way that it is easy to operate and self explaining. By touching the keys at the touch screen gently the next menu is selected or specific values can be changed. Browsing through the menus by touching the relevant keys at the touch screen will help you to find the information you are looking for. Ticking the “Home” key in the left upper corner of the screen will guide you directly to the Home screen. At the right bottom of the touch screen you will find the keys to dim or increase the illumination of the touch screen. At the left bottom of the screen you will find two keys representing the internal alarm functions. Ticking the left button opens the Alarm log screen. In order to accept internal alarms, please touch the right button. In the Settings mode you will be able to change specific values via a numeric keypad. This keypad (See figure on next page) will be displayed after pressing the values in the white sections at the touch screen. The value will change when a new value is set and the Return key is pressed. If you do not want to change the value, pressing the Return key again will close the numeric keypad and the touch screen will return to the previous menu. 18 Numeric keypad On the following pages several examples of PEM 3 screens are shown including a description of the main PEM 3 functions. 19 PEM 3 Efficiency Monitoring system 1) Main menu By touching the home key in the left upper corner you will be guided to the “Home” screen of the PEM 3 system. After touching the “Information” key you will be able to select the main screens showing all the propulsion data. When touching the Signals key you will be able to have an overview of the actual data measured by the torque sensor, flowmeters and additional sensors. The Signals menu will be described in item 7. The Settings menu will be described in item 8. When the backlight is switched off it will automatically be activated again when you are touching the screen. The intensity of the backlight can be changed by touching the keys at the bottom of the screen in the right corner. The “Information” key allows you to open screens showing actual information together with the average values of 1, 4 and 24 hours. In the submenus you can choose Propulsion, Consumption, Totals, Engine load and Environment. On the following pages abovementioned submenus are described. 20 2) Propulsion submenu This is the main screen submitting information about the actual torque, propeller speed and power at the propeller. The bar graphs are specially designed to have immediate overview of the situation. Propeller thrust, GPS, speedlog and shaft generator values will be available if the corresponding sensors are connected. The Avg. (average) 1hr, 4 hrs and 24 hrs indicators in the columns on the right make it easy to compare the actual value and average value during the last hour the vessel was sailing. Comparing these two values helps the crew to efficiently detect changes in for example power absorption of the propulsion system. When the propeller shaft is rotating the PEM 3 is continuously recalculating these average values. In case the propeller shaft is not rotating the average values stay as they are. Average values will only be displayed when the system gathered sufficient data to make a correct calculation. In case a speedlog (Doppler log) is involved in the system this screen will show the ship speed of the vessel through the water (STW). In case a GPS system is used as input for ship speed this screen will show the ship speed over ground (SOG). If SOG speed is used local currents on the vessels route are not taken into account in the fuel consumption calculation. When both SOG and STW are used as input to the PEM 3 system you will be able to detect that the vessel is sailing against or with the current. For example: When ship speed SOG is below ship speed STW the vessel is sailing against the current. Propulsion monitoring screen (single screw version) 21 Propulsion monitoring screen (twin screw version) In case a TT-Sense® Thrust & Torque sensor is applied extra thrust monitoring bar graphs representing Propeller Thrust and Thrust/Power quotient are added to the PEM 3 system. Please keep in mind that ship speed through water (STW), propeller power and thrust are related to each other. The Thrust quotient (kN/MW) is the main indicator for propeller efficiency. When sailing an average speed during 1 hour, the corresponding Thrust quotient value indicates your propeller efficiency. TT-Sense® optional bar graphs for Thrust quotient and Thrust For twin screw vessels the Thrust and Thrust quotient values will be shown per propeller. 22 3) Consumption submenu The consumption submenu is displaying all data, which include fuel flowmeter measurements. As a standard the PEM 3 system monitors the fuel consumption per engine in kg/hour. In case you prefer to read out all fuel consumption data in litres/hour you can change the measurement unit in the settings menu in the submenu Fuel type. At the last column the actual fuel type is shown. The type of fuel can be set per engine or consumer in the same settings menu. If the main engine is driving a propeller shaft line equipped with a T-Sense® torque sensor(s) the SFOC rate will inform you about the Specific Fuel Oil Consumption in grams of fuel per kilowatt per hour of this engine. The Engine efficiency is indicating the efficiency of the main engine taken into account the caloric value of the fuel. The caloric value can be set in the Settings menu. FOC, SOG represents Fuel Oil Consumption of the main engine(s) per nautical mile over ground. FOC, STW represents Fuel Oil Consumption of the main engine(s) per nautical mile through water. If a vessel is sailing against the current FOC SOG will be lower than FOC STW. Consumption screen (single screw version) Consumption screen (twin screw version) 23 4) Totals submenu This submenu displays the total counters for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions when fuel flowmeters are involved in the PEM 3 system. Total mass in kilo gram indicates the total fuel consumed per propulsion engine, diesel generator drive or other type of consumer, which have flowmeters incorporated in their fuel system. The type of fuel can be set in the settings menu. Specific name of the consumers can be set by VAF authorized personnel in the settings menu. The values in the left column are cumulative and fixed. The values in the right column are resettable. Propulsion Energy and Shaft Revolutions are total values showing the total energy consumed by the propeller and the total number of revolutions made by the propeller shaft. Be aware that by pushing the Reset button the values in the right column will be set to zero and the previous displayed values will be lost. 24 5) Engine load diagram The engine load diagram displays engine load of main engine, when a T-Sense® or TT-Sense® is connected to the PEM 3 system. The load limit lines of the main engine can be set in the settings menu. The blue line can be displayed as an option and indicates a reference line which is for example the sea trial curve of the vessel. The load limit lines make clear up to which torque and RPM level your engine is loaded. When the actual point (green) is passing the limit lines (red) the engine is overloaded and can get overheated. In case of twin screw vessels 2 actual points (green and blue) will be shown in the same diagram. 6) Environment submenu When fuel flowmeters are incorporated in the PEM 3 system this screen displays the CO2 emissions per kW. When an additional GPS signal is incorporated, the system will also display CO2 emissions per Nautical Mile and the EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator) which represents kilograms of CO2 emissions per Nautical Mile per cargo unit. The unit for cargo can be adapted to: TEU, DWT or persons. The emissions in kg CO2 /NM and g CO2 /kWh are representing CO2 emissions of the main engine. EEOI is representing the total CO2 emissions of all consumers monitored by the PEM 3 system. 25 7) Signals menu Flows: In the submenu “Flows” you can look up the actual flow meter measurements in l/min per flow meter and the corresponding temperature of the fuel inside the specific flow meter. This amount is not yet compensated for gravity change due to temperature deviations of the fuel. Flow values will be converted to a reference temperature of 15.6°C if temperature sensors are incorporated in the fuel system. The difference between the Supply flow and Return flow values represents the fuel consumption per engine. T-Sense®: The T-Sense® submenu will show you the Torque, Speed, Power and Thrust measurements (optional) of the optical torque/thrust sensor at the shaft. 26 GPS: Ticking GPS will give you the lateral and longitudional position submitted by the NMEA 0183 GPS unit. Shaft generator: When a 4-20 mA output representing generator power is available at the shaft generator, the Shaft Gen submenu will show you the power absorbed by the generator. 27 8) Settings menu (User settings) The Settings Mode for Users is accessible by entering the 4-digit password 1234 in the Login screen. This screen is your entrance to adjustment of the bar graph ranges and date and time setting. WARNING: WRONG SETTINGS MAY RESULT IN SYSTEM FAILURE. VAF INSTRUMENTS B.V. WILL NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR OPERATIONS CARRIED OUT BY UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS. Changing T-Sense settings: In order to have a clear overview of the actual Torque, shaft Speed and Power it is possible to change the displayed bar graph range in the Settings Menu. Touch the white sections displaying the numbers on the screen and change the Min. or Max. value via the Numeric Keypad, which pops up. Inverse torque: When the touch screen is showing a negative torque value, when sailing ahead you are able to convert this negative value to positive by pushing the Torque Standard/Torque Inverse key once. Pushing the Torque Inverse key will return the original value again. Changing fuel type per engine: If you want to change the type of fuel your engines are consuming please tick the ‘Engine’ menu and select the right fuel type from the drop down box. A maximum of 4 types of fuels and subsequently fuel properties can be defined in the ‘Fuel type settings menu’. Unifuel systems: When When fuel fuel change-over is done with an Unifuel system, please note that the type of fuel needs to be changed for both (sets of) engines. 28 Fuel type settings: Above screen is used for adjustment of the specific values of the fuel consumed by the engines. By touching enable/disable you can define a maximum number of 4 fuel types. The standard unit for fuel flow output at the PEM 3 touch screen is kilogram. It is possible to read out all fuel consumption measurements in litres instead of kilograms. By touching the Consumption in kg / in Litres key at the left upper corner you can switch over from kg to litre and vice versa. In the “fuel type” settings screen the following fuel type parameters can be set per fuel type by touching the values in the white sections: Specific gravity (default 0.997 kg/l) Gravity change (default 0.070%/°C) Reference temperature (Default 15.6 °C) Conversion factor Cf for calculating the CO2 emissions per kg of fuel (default Cf value is 3.1144 for HFO) Caloric value of the fuel (Default 40.87 MJ/kg) 29 Defining the load range limits in the engine load diagram: The engine load diagram indicates the limits of the engine regarding torque and shaft speed. In this screen you can define the load limit lines (red) and reference lines (blue) in the diagram. These lines will make clear up to which torque and RPM level your engine is loaded. Depending on the make and type of main engine the position and shape of the load limit lines will differ. In order to implement the correct load limits please contact your main engine supplier. Example of Engine Load Diagram in Information screen and engine load settings The yellow section in the table above defines the starting point of a straight line, which is the low operation line. The starting point is the yellow point in above Engine Load Diagram. The next dark green point will define the end point of this straight line. In the dark green section in the left table you can define a Torque/Speed Curve from dark green point 1 to dark green point 6. By entering the 6 points in the table you define this curve.This is the upper load limit line in the engine load diagram. Alternatively you can draw a straight Torque/Speed Line by touching the grey button at the top of the screen and choosing “Torque/Speed Line”. In this case you just enter the starting point (1) and end point (2) of the line. 30 The red section in the table defines the CMCR point (maximum power and maximum RPM). A straight line from dark green end point to the red point in the load diagram will be drawn. The vertical red line in the load diagram is drawn automatically and defines the maximum speed for continuous operation. When you like to add a reference line, for example to represent the vessels power curve during seatrial, you can define this line by filling in the Torque/Speed Ref. Points 1 to 6 in the dark blue section of the table. Changing environment settings: For calculating the precise EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Index) value you can adapt the cargo amount and cargo unit in above screen by touching the white Input section and grey Unit key. The unit of the cargo amount can be adapted to Tonnes, TEU or Persons. Enabling or disabling alarms: Above screen is available for enabling or disabling specific PEM 3 system alarms concerning torque, flow rate, temperature of the fuel in the engines fuel system etc. touch the grey buttons to change from Enable to Disable vice versa. 31 Changing date and time settings: Tick the white touch screen sections on the screen showing the values and change the values of date and time via the Numeric Keypad. Push Set to save the date and time in the PEM 3 system. 32 9) Settings menu (Special user settings) The Settings Mode for Users is accessible by entering the 4-digit password 5678 in the Login screen. This screen is your entrance to adjustment of flow meter configuration, K-factor per flow meter and Net flow cut-off. WARNING: WRONG SETTINGS MAY RESULT IN SYSTEM FAILURE. VAF INSTRUMENTS B.V. WILL NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR SUCH OPERATIONS Engine screen In this Settings Mode you are able to adapt the configuration of the flowmeters per engine/consumer. Press the white sections in the column Supply Flow/Return Flow/Common Flow/Leakage Common/Leakage Supply/Return and you can select/adapt the number of the flowmeter. Be aware that the flowmeters numbers 1 to 12 are connected in ascending order to the backplanes 14 at the Signal Processing Unit. A standard Unifuel configuration is shown in the example below. Eng 1 is the Main Engine in the fuel system aft of the common flow meter number 3 and Engine 2 is the Auxiliary engine, which is monitored by the supply/return flowmeters number 1 and 2. Propulsion engine starboard (SB) Unifuel configuration Fuel leakage from the fuel injection pumps can be monitored by adding an extra flow meter in the fuel leakage line to the fuel leak oil tank. When the engine is part of the propulsion installation equipped with a VAF T-/TT-Sense® torque sensor you should mark the engine as Propulsion engine (Yes, SB, PS) In that case the fuel consumed by this engine will be taken into account in the SFOC calculation for this engine. 33 Flows screen In below Flows screens authorized personnel can adjust the K-factors of the flowmeters 1 to maximally 12 and the sample time per flow meter. Shaft generator screen The shaft generator settings can be set in the screen below. Select Yes in the Propulsion dropdown box, when the shaft generator output power is to be included in the SFOC calculation of the main propulsion engine. Please define if your shaft generator output signal is active or passive. In case you like to connect 2 shaft generators to the PEM3 system please contact VAF Instruments. 34 Alarm screens and alarm logging 10) Alarm screens Accept alarm key System alarm key changes to red colour when an alarm is detected. In case the PEM 3 system detects an alarm the Alarm key becomes red. An Alarm Message will both pop up at the bottom of the touch screen and will appear on the Alarm Screen. In the Signals menu (see screen above) you will notice that the output values from the faulty sensor are changed to “0” and are colored red. To acknowledge the alarm you have to touch the Accept alarm key. The Alarm Messages will disappear when you have solved the error. When the alarm condition has been eliminated the alarm will no longer be active and the ‘system alarm’ key will turn to normal again. Press the Alarm key to open the alarm screen, which contains dates, time and status of all recently detected alarms. The following alarms are detected: Alarm Flowmeter 1-12, pulse sensor fail Flowmeter 1-12, temp sensor fail Flowmeter 1-12, temp high T-Sense 1-2, communication fail GPS/ship speed, communication fail Shaft Gen. 1-2, sensor fail Possible cause Faulty sensor or connection/cable between SPU and meter Faulty sensor or connection/cable between SPU and meter Temperature high set point override MODbus connection/cable between SPU and control box is broken or wrongly connected Connection/cable between SPU and sensor is broken or wrongly connected. Remark: First try to swab the 2 NMEA signal wires. Connection/cable or 4-20 mA analogue output is faulty 35 7.6 METHOD OF CALCULATIONS Shaft power reading Shaft power is calculated from the measured torque and the revolutions of the shaft. Celsius is set as a fixed parameter in the PEM 2. The thrust quotient is an indicator of propeller efficiency. Be aware that propeller thrust and ship speed influence each other. 37 EEOI: EEOI = Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator = Mass CO2 /transport work Kilogrammes CO2 Cargo . Nautical mile This quotient indicates the operational efficiency of your vessel. The EEOI is taking into account CO2 emissions from your consumers, which are monitored by the PEM 3 system, the mass of cargo in DWT, number of TEU or number of persons and the distance sailed. 38 8. MAINTENANCE No special maintenance is needed for the PEM 3 equipment. The touch screen can be cleaned with a dry and clean cloth. Do not use any cleaning product or chemical on the screen. When removing a PEM 3 system precautions must be taken to prevent personal injuries and damage to the touch screen and Signal Processing Unit. 9. REPAIR Nothing on the PEM 3 system can be repaired on site. 10. TAKE OUT OF SERVICE Switch off the 24 Volts and/or 115/230 Volts power supply. 11. REMOVAL AND STORAGE OF EQUIPMENT Switch off the 24 Volts and 115/230 Volts power supply. Make sure that all wires that are connected to the PEM 3 system are labelled correctly so that reinstallation of the PEM 3 system can be done without any errors. Disconnect all the input and output wires. Store the PEM 3 system in a box in a cool and dry place, so that the PEM 3 cannot be damaged. 12. MALFUNCTION AND SEND FOR REPAIR If the PEM 3 system stops working completely contact VAF Instruments for instructions. In the event the PEM 3 system parts has to be sent back for repair, you can send it directly to: VAF Instruments B.V. Vierlinghstraat 24 NL-3316 EL Dordrecht The Netherlands 13. ENVIRONMENT The PEM 3 equipment has no negative influence on the environment during normal operation. 14. DISPOSAL The PEM 3 equipment is made out of metal and electronics. It should be disposed according to local laws of the country. 39 15. TROUBLE SHOOTING If the PEM 3 system does malfunction, power the PEM 3 system down, check all wiring and power the PEM 3 system back up again. This will restart the program. No torque signal The connection between the PEM 3 Signal Processing Unit (SPU-3) and the stator control box is broken Check wires for damage. Check the connections in the stator control box or in the PEM 3 Signal Processing Unit if applicable. No signal from shaft generator The connection between the PEM 3 Signal Processing Unit and the shaft generator sensor is broken. Check the wires for damage Check the connections to the backplane in the PEM 3 Signal Processing Unit (see chapter 17 Drawings) Temperature sensor failure The connection between the PEM 3 Signal Processing Unit and the temperature sensor is broken. Check the wires for damage Check all connections inside the temperature sensor. Check the connections to the backplane in the PEM 3 Signal Processing Unit (see chapter 17 Drawings) Flowmeter alarms can occur when: Flow meter 1 (supply) < Flow meter 2 (return) Flow meter 1 (supply) > 0 and Flow meter 2 (return) = 0 Check the wires for damage. Check all the connections at the flow meter side. Check the settings of the flow meters and relevant parameters and adjust them accordingly in cooperation with a VAF service engineer. Temperature supply or return is too high Adjust the temperature high set point of the alarm or adjust the maximum fuel temperature level(s) accordingly. 16. EMC CLASSIFICATIONS OF THE PEM 3 SYSTEM PEM 3 Efficiency Monitoring system is tested in accordance with: General Vibration Strain, IEC publication 60068-2-6. Also complies with EMC and ESD tests according to EN61000. 16.1 CERTIFICATES For a torque measuring system no classification certificates are required. 40 17. Without prejudice to the restrictions stated hereinafter, the contractor guarantees both the soundness of the product delivered by him and the quality of the material used and/or delivered for it, insofar as this concerns faults in the product delivered which do not become apparent during inspection or transfer test, which the principal shall demonstrate to have arisen within 12 months from delivery in accordance with sub article 1A exclusively or predominantly as a direct consequence of unsoundness of the construction used by the contractor or as a consequence of faulty finishing or the use of poor materials. 1A. The product shall be deemed to have been delivered when it is ready for inspection (if inspection at the premises of the contractor has been agreed) and otherwise when it is ready for shipment. 2. Articles 1 and 1a shall equally apply to faults which do not become apparent during inspection or transfer test which are caused exclusively or predominantly by unsound assembly/installation by the contractor. If assembly/installation is carried out by the contractor, the guarantee period intended in article 1 shall last 12 months from the day on which assembly/installation is completed by the contractor, with the understanding that in this case the guarantee period shall end not later than 18 months after delivery in accordance with the terms of sub article 1A. 3. Defects covered by the guarantee intended under articles 1, 1a and 2 shall be remedied by the contractor by repair or replacement of the faulty component either on or off the premises of the contractor, or by shipment of a replacement component, this remaining at the discretion of the contractor. Subarticle 3A shall equally apply if repair or replacement takes place at the site where the product has been assembled/installed. All costs accruing above the single obligation described in the first sentence, such as are not restricted to shipment costs, travelling and accommodation costs or disassembly or assembly costs insofar as they are not covered by the agreement, shall be paid by the principal. 3A.If repair or replacement takes place at the site where the product has been assembled/installed, the principal shall ensure, at his own expense and risk, that: a. the employees of the contractor shall be able to commence their work as soon as they have arrived at the erection site and continue to do so during normal working hours, and moreover, if the contractor deems it necessary, outside the normal working hours, with the proviso that the contractor informs the principal of this in good time; b. suitable accommodation and/or all facilities required in accordance with government regulations, the agreement and common usage, shall be available for the employees of the contractor; c. the access roads to the erection site shall be suitable for the transport required; d. the allocated site shall be suitable for storage and assembly; e. the necessary lockable storage sites for materials, tools and other goods shall be available; f. the necessary and usual auxiliary workmen, auxiliary machines, auxiliary tools, materials and working materials (including process liquids, oils and greases, cleaning and other minor materials, gas, water, electricity, steam, compressed air, heating, lighting, etc.) and the measurement and testing equipment usual for in the business operations of the principal, shall be available at the correct place and at the disposal of the contractor at the correct time and without charge; 45 g. all necessary safety and precautionary measures shall have been taken and adhered to, and all measures shall have been taken and adhered to necessary to observe the applicable government regulations in the context of assembly/installation; h. the products shipped shall be available at the correct site at the commencement of and during assembly. 4. Defects not covered by the guarantee are those which occur partially or wholly as a result of: A. non-observance of the operation and maintenance instructions or other than foreseeable normal usage; B. normal wear and tear; C. assembly/installation by third parties, including the principal; D. the application of any government regulation regarding the nature or quality of the material used; E. materials or goods used in consultation with the principal; F. materials or goods provided by the principal to the contractor for processing; G. materials, goods, working methods and constructions insofar as are applied at the express instruction of the principal, and materials or goods supplied by or on behalf of the principal; H. components obtained from third parties by the contractor insofar as that party has given no guarantee to the contractor. 5. If the principal fails to fulfil any obligation properly or on time ensuing from the agreement concluded between the principal and the contractor or any agreement connected to it, the contractor shall not be bound by any of these agreements to any guarantee regardless of how it is referred to. If, without previous written approval from the contractor, the principal commences disassembly, repair or other work on the product or allows it to be commenced, then every agreement with regard to guarantee shall be void. 6. Claims regarding defects must be submitted in writing as quickly as possible and not later than 14 days after the discovery of such. All claims against the contractor regarding faults shall be void if this term is exceeded. Claims pertaining to the guarantee must be submitted within one year of the valid complaint on penalty of invalidity. 7. If the contractor replaces components/products under the terms of his guarantee obligations, the replaced components/products shall become the property of the contractor. 8. Unless otherwise agreed, a guarantee on repair or overhaul work carried out by the contractor or other services shall only be given on the correctness of the manner in which the commissioned work is carried out, this for a period of 6 months.
