Lakewood
Community
Recreation and Education
Department
The Lakewood Community Recreation and Education Department has been
committed to providing safe and meaningful recreational and
educational opportunities for kids and adults for over 90 years.
We offer programs in aquatics, athletics, activities and continuing education.
Coordinator’s Message
It is our privilege to present the winter/spring edition of programming developed by the Lakewood Community
Recreation and Education Department. Several new program ideas that we are currently working on include a Youth
Fitness Initiative (Grades 4-8), Family Support through the Connecting for Kids-Teach Me to Play Program (Ages
3-6) and the establishment of a Small Business Partnership Model within the Lakewood community. Additionally,
the department leadership team has embraced a focus on professional practice as defined by the development
of an Intern Program with Cleveland State University (CSU). This collaborative experience will provide us the
opportunity to engage directly with students in support of their curricular programs, career paths and personal/
professional development. The eligible student degree programs will include Sports Administration/Management,
Recreation Specialists/Leisure Studies, Communication and Business Management.
We are fortunate to have a Community Recreation & Education Commission (CREC). The Commission provides oversight to both
the Youth Athletic Sub-Commission (YAC) and the Adult Athletic Sub-Commission (AAC). Within this framework there are currently
several sub-committees at work to study and develop proposals with respect to the availability of open gym time, outdoor facility
usage and a systems communication plan.
The members of the CREC, AAC and YAC are volunteers that have a deep desire to support programs and strategies that fuel
organizational growth and performance in direct support of all participants.
As we move into the new year, please take some time to review the vast array of program offerings. I am confident that you will find
an activity that is unique, fun and challenging…we are here to enrich the lives of all age groups.
Have a great season!

Aquatics
As we transition to 2015, we have another strong line up of Aquatics programs on the schedule
at the Lakewood High School Pool. We encourage everyone to register for a program, attend
an adult or open swim session or participate in a program with one of the many groups that
utilize the pool.
Our youth swim team, LRST is gaining momentum as their current season peaks in the opening
months of 2015. We are extremely grateful for the support and time offered by their active
booster club in making this program a great success for the swimmers.
As the weather turns warmer this spring, some attention turns towards the summer season at
the outdoor pools. We are looking to hire lifeguards for the upcoming season. We offer several
certification classes over the next few months. For more information regarding employment
opportunities at the outdoor pools this summer, please email Matt Demaline at: matt.demaline@

Lakewood Recreation Learn-To-Swim Course Descriptions
The Lakewood Recreation learn-to-swim program
is an independent progressive program emphasizing safety and a streamlined teaching approach.
Swimmers learn how to dive into the deep
water from the side. Safety emphasis is on
when to call 911.
Shrimps 1: (12 months to 2 years) This parent
and child class provides structure while allowing the child to be comfortable in the water
along with the parent.
Level 5 (5 - 14 years of age) Swimmers continue to perfect the freestyle and backstroke,
while being introduced to the breaststroke.
More endurance in both swimming and
treading is built. Swimmers are introduced to
the front dive from the diving board. Safety
emphasis is on what to do in an emergency.
Shrimps 2: (2 years of age) This parent and
child class provides structure while encouraging the child to continue to explore the pool
alongside a parent.
Shrimps 3: (3 years of age) This parent and
child class fosters safe independence by
encouraging the children to, through use of
floatation aids, move independently alongside
a parent.
Beginner 4 Year Olds: (4 years of age) Children are encouraged to be comfortable in the
water, while learning basic floats and locamotion skills.
Intermediate 4 Year Olds: (4 years of age)
Locomotion skills are improved upon with
less use of floatation aids. Children continue
to build on basic floats and safety skills.
Advanced 4 Year Olds: (4 years of age) The
freestyle stroke is introduced, as well as swimming on the back. Child must be comfortable
putting his/her face in the water.
Level 1: (5 - 12 years of age) Beginner swimmers work on gaining confidence in the water
by using floatation devices to assist in movement, submerging their face in the water and
basic floating. Safety emphasis is on wearing a
life jacket when appropriate.
Level 2: (5 - 12 years of age) Beginner swimmers expand their confidence level in the
water by swimming without floatation for 15
yards, submerging and retrieving an object
from underwater and basic movement while
on their back. Safety emphasis is on entering
the pool appropriately.
Level 3: (5 - 12 years of age) Swimmers are
introduced to the freestyle stroke using rotary
breathing and the elementary backstroke
with a flutter kick. This is the last level taught
in the shallow sections of the pool. Safety
emphasis is on swimming with a friend in a
supervised area.
Level 6 (5 - 14 years of age) Swimmers learn
the butterfly stroke, while perfecting the
breaststroke. Swimmers learn about Swimmers are also trained to pass the prerequisites
for the lifeguarding course.

Lakewood Recreation 216-529-4081
Instructor Candace Pollock - Longer life spans
mean that, statistically, adult children will spend
as much time caring for aging parents as they
do for their own children. They both face many
challenges as they deal with the emotional, financial and legal aspects of long-term care decisions. These decisions straddle several different
arenas that have competing rules and families
can face unnecessary emotional and financial
costs when they make the “wrong” decision
because they did not understand their options.
This workshop provides an overview of the factors families should consider for the care and
safety of their parents and their assets while
protecting the child from parental debts. It covers the essential directives families should have
in place to ensure agents are authorized to
act for the parent and addresses Medicare and
Medicaid rules, care management, guardianship
and other factors that can arise when a parent

Blended Families: Estate
Planning to Protect ‘Yours, Mine
and Ours’ Families
Instructor Candace Pollock - (Based on the
book) Although families with a mix of “yours,
mine, and ours” such as children or others from
prior relationships are common in our society,
their planning needs are unique, especially when
a disability or death occurs within the family.
Standard ways couples hold title to property
or name beneficiaries can cause the “old” and
“new” family members to be at odds and can
even cause an unintended disinheritance. This
workshop outlines the unique challenges and
specific strategies blended families need to be
aware of to avoid planning gaps and conflicts.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of
the core legal directives every family should have
to protect the people and things they cherish.

Instructor Candace Pollock - Most strategies
about conserving and applicant’s resources
under Medicaid rules involve the nature, amounts
and timing of expentitures of the applicant’s
resources or the iming of the application itself.
Penalties can be longer than ncecssary or avoided
altogether if the rules are followed precisely. This
workshop covers the top ten mistakes families
make regarding Medicaid and the long-term care
issues. It explains terminology, importamnt dates
and strategies authorized under Ohio Medicaid
rules, including the myths about the new Medicaid
