There were unconfirmed reports that
an aircraft has crashed in the waters

aircraft were not known.
A transport official said Flight QZ8501

The aircraft was in the Indonesian

Srinagar, Dec 28:
Four days after the Assembly elections result, there are still no signs of

in Jammu and Kashmir. Governor
N N Vohra has sent letters to both
the Peoples Democratic Party and

their next step.
The results on 23 December led to
a fractured mandate with the PDP

Conference 15 and Congress 12 in
the 87-member J&K Assembly with
smaller parties and independents
bagging the rest.
Senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig and BJP’s Ram Madhav
had done spade work for a possible
alliance between the two, but the latter wants structured talks on contentious issues like giving party founder

The PDP wants structured talks
with BJP on issues like giving Mufti
Mohammad Sayeed full six years
term as chief minister, clarity on
article 370, revocation of AFSPA.
Madhav said, We are not averse
to PDP’s demand of talks been
held at the highest level. The Prime
Minister can also talk with PDP
leadership.
PDP leader Naeem Akthar, however, said, ‘These are preliminary
talks. They need to be taken to
another level.’
Adding to the drama, the Congress and NC stand by their offer
to the PDP. Meanwhile, Independents too have decided to support a
secular alliance.
CPI (M) MLA Mohammed Yousuf
Tarigami said, ‘I have spoken to
two other Independents to come
together and throw weight behind
PDP-Congress government.’
Sources said the PDP is working
on a common minimum programme
which it hopes the BJP would accept.
The party is pushing for an alliance
with the BJP as after having come
to power on the promise of quick
development in the state, it wants to
ally with a party which can give easy
financial assistance.

Residents want ‘Aadhaar’ process to be streamlined
Aadhaar cards are back in the
news. With the Central government
announcing the DBTL scheme for
LPG cylinders and linking them to
Aadhaar, residents are looking to
apply for the same. However, they
are confused as to how to go about
it.
It can be said that getting a
Aadhar card still remains a
distant dream due to glitches in
the ongoing enrollment process
happening in the locality.
According to ofcial sources, the
Directorate of Census Operations
has set up 18 permanent
enrollment centres in 13 zones

to obtain the card. The Directorate
has set up 268 enrollment centres
in the State. It also plans to set up
50 permanent enrollment centres
in Chennai and 469 in the State.
The centres include taluk ofces,
municipal
corporations
and
municipalities.
Currently, the centres are
in the process of lling the
NPR forms and the bio-metric
process is going on in full
swing. But residents lamented
that the cumbersome procedure
is slow at snail’s pace.
Elaborating,

Further, complaints like lack of
preparedness among ofcials and
basic computer knowledge among
many residents are issues. About
this, a resident Muthukrishnan said,
‘People queue up from 9 a.m but
ofcials arrive late. It is disorganised
and ofcials take a long time to

have to take a day off to undergo

Contributing to the existing problems

residents, but it is a half-done job. They
(civic staff) simply lled the portion
without adding bitumen. As a result, the
condition of the lane worsened after the

It may be noted that ever since the
yover on Arcot Road was closed, this
stretch is frequented by many to reach
destinations like Kodambakkam and
Vadapalani. The lane, being relatively
trafc-free, has proved to be an
added advantage, but for its poor civic

Savithri Ganesan, a commuter states,

Chennai, Dec 28:
To bring relief to headache, which is
emerging as a common medical aliment, a city-based doctor J Bhaskaran turned into an author and has
written a book addressing the issue.
Members of the Savithri Foundation
released the book titled ‘Thalaivali’
here on Saturday.
Adyar Cancer Institute chairperson
Dr V Shanta, who was present on
the occasion pointed out that medical care these days are becoming
costlier.
Stating that earlier doctors used to
talk to patients and diagnose them,
she said, ‘these days they lack communication and even to diagnose
the problem, the doctor makes use
of technologies. This effects patient
care.’ Madras School of Economics
chairman C Rangarajan said that
though awareness of headache has
increased, only very few go to the
doctor. And most of them are aware
of the pain but do not know the
cause behind it. This book will help
such people where the symptoms,
cause and the treatment plans are
clearly jotted down, he said.
In a bid to build a healthier society, Rangarajan said that the
country has to grow faster and
more should be spent towards
health and education. He pointed
out that at present 1.4 per cent of
the GDP is spent on health which
has to increase to 2.5 per cent.
To achieve this goal more private
and public partnership should be
encouraged, he added.

Survivors of the Boxing Day tsunami are gathering
for commemoration ceremonies to remember the tragedy 10 years ago that left an estimated 230,000 people
dead on 26 December.
The tsunami was triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake, which struck off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, and hit coastal communities across the Indian
Ocean. Thousands of Indonesians gathered in Banda
Aceh, the capital of Aceh province on Sumatra, to hold
a memorial service.
Banda Aceh was largely attened by the earthquake
and subsequent waves and around 170,000 people
died. Earlier, a Muslim prayer service was held at the
19th century Baiturrahman Mosque, one of the few
buildings in Banda Aceh that remained standing.
A woman at the service shared her thoughts on the
lasting impact of the tsunami.
'The prayer session makes us remember the tsunami
and be thankful that we're safe,' she said. 'The tsunami destroyed the city, but it also blessed us. God
has brought love among the people and Aceh received
so much help from the outside world because of the
disaster.'

New non-invasive method
can detect Alzheimer's early
Researchers, including
those of Indian origin,
have developed a noninvasive method that can
detect Alzheimer's disease in a living animal,
well before typical symptoms appear.
An
interdisciplinary
team of Northwestern
University scientists and
engineers have developed a noninvasive MRI
(magnetic resonance imaging) probe
that pairs a magnetic nanostructure
(MNS) with an antibody that seeks out
the amyloid beta brain toxins responsible for onset of Alzheimer's disease.
The accumulated toxins, because of
the associated magnetic nanostructures, show up as dark areas in MRI
scans of the brain.
'We have a new brain imaging method that can detect the toxin that leads
to Alzheimer's disease,' said neuroscientist William L Klein who led the research team along with materials scientist Vinayak P Dravid.
'Using MRI, we can see the toxins
attached to neurons in the brain. We
expect to use this tool to detect this
disease early and to help identify drugs
that can effectively eliminate the toxin
CHENNAI
and improve health,' Klein said.
The new MRI probe technology is
detecting something different from
conventional technology: toxic amyloid beta oligomers instead of plaques,
which occur at a stage of Alzheimer's
when therapeutic intervention would be
very late.
Amyloid beta oligomers now are
widely believed to be the culprit in the
onset of Alzheimer's disease and subsequent memory loss.
In a diseased brain, the mobile amyloid beta oligomers attack the synapses of neurons, destroying memory and
ultimately resulting in neuron death.
As time progresses, the amyloid beta
builds up and starts to stick together,
forming the amyloid plaques that current probes target. Oligomers may
appear more than a decade before
plaques are detected.
'Non-invasive imaging by
MRI of amyloid beta oligomers is a giant step forward
towards diagnosis of this debilitating disease in its earliest form,' said Dravid, the
Abraham Harris Professor
of Materials Science and Engineering at the McCormick
School of Engineering and
Applied Science.
'This MRI method could be
used to determine how well a new drug
is working. If a drug is effective, you
would expect the amyloid beta signal
to go down,' Dravid said.
The nontoxic MRI probe was delivered intranasally to mouse models with
Alzheimer's disease and control animals without the disease.
In animals with Alzheimer's, the toxins' presence can be seen clearly in
the hippocampus in MRI scans of the
brain. No dark areas, however, were
seen in the hippocampus of the control
group.

De, Shaleen Vasavada, Sreyesh Satpathy, Summer Wu, Hrushikesh Joshi
and Pottumarthi Prasad also worked

Clarke came out of the surgery feeling positive but conceded on Saturday he would struggle to be t for Australia's opening match against England on 14 February.
'I'm really condent that the way things are progressing

First hybrid-electric airplane
tested in the UK
An aircraft with a parallel
hybrid vengine - the rst
ever to be able to recharge
its batteries in ight - has
been successfully tested in
the UK, an important step
toward cleaner, low-carbon
air travel.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge, in association with Boeing, tested the
rst aircraft to be powered by a
parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system, where an electric
motor and petrol engine work
together to drive the propeller.
The demonstrator aircraft
uses up to 30 per cent less fuel
than a comparable plane with
a petrol-only engine. The
aircraft is also able
to recharge its batteries in ight, the
rst time this has
been achieved, researchers said.
The demonstrator
is based on a commercially-available
single-seat aircraft, and
its hybrid engine was designed
and built by engineers at Cambridge with Boeing funding
support.
The aircraft uses a combination of a 4-stroke piston engine
and an electric motor/generator, coupled through the same
drive pulley to spin the propeller.
During take-off and climb,
when maximum power is required, the engine and motor
work together to power the
plane, but once cruising height
is reached, the electric motor
can be switched into generator
mode to recharge the batteries
or used in motor assist mode
to minimise fuel consumption.
The same principle
is at work in a hybrid car.
'Although
hybrid cars have
been available
for more than a
decade,
what's
been holding back
the development of
hybrid or fully-electric
aircraft until now is battery
technology,' said Dr Paul Robertson of Cambridge's Department of Engineering, who led
the project.
'Until recently, they have
been too heavy and didn't
have enough energy capacity. But with the advent of improved lithium-polymer batter-
ies, similar to what you'd nd
in a laptop computer, hybrid
aircraft - albeit at a small scale
- are now starting to become
viable,' he said.
The hybrid power system in
the Cambridge demonstrator
is based on a Honda engine,
in parallel with a custom lightweight motor.
A power electronics module
designed and built in the Engineering Department controls
the electrical current to and
from the batteries - a set of 16
large lithium-polymer cells located in special compartments
built into the wings.
The petrol engine is optimally
sized to provide the cruise
power at its most efcient operating point, resulting in an
improved fuel efciency overall.
While the Cambridge demonstrator is an important step
in the development of hybrid
or fully-electric aircraft, more
research is required before
commercial airliners will be
powered entirely with electric
motors, researchers said.
Test ights for the project
took place at the Sywell Aerodrome, near Northampton.
These tests consisted of a series of 'hops' along the runway,
followed by longer evaluation
ights at a height of over 1,500
feet.

New Delhi, Dec 28 (PTI):
The Finance Ministry said the Ordinance for insurance sector reform will
help companies raise capital through
new and innovative instruments, besides promoting economic growth and
job creation.
The content of the Ordinance is also
aimed at allowing insurance companies to raise capital through new and innovative instruments, which would help
capital intensive insurance industry to
garner resources for business growth,’
the Ministry said in a release.
The Insurance Laws (Amendment)
Ordinance 2014, which was promulgated by the President, will be taken
up for consideration and passage in
the next session of Parliament, beginning February.
The amendment is aimed to enhance
the FDI cap in an Indian insurance
company from 26 per cent to 49 per
cent with the safeguard of Indian ownership and control.
The hike in foreign investment limit in
the insurance sector has potential to
attract up to USD 7-8 billion (about Rs
50,000 crore) from overseas investors,
giving a major boost to the segment.
The proposed step, the Ministry said,
is also for furtherance of the broad
objective of deepening the reform process in the economy in general and the
insurance sector in particular.
This is of paramount importance to

have to decrease the energy consumption for each of the rating increasing costs in turn.
The companies have been already

While Panasonic India did not

RBI has kept interest rate (repo) unchanged at 8 per cent since January
despite industry and government urging it to cut the rate. The Wholesale

There are 52 insurance companies
operating in India, of which 24 are in
the life insurance business and 28 in
general insurance business. In addition, GIC is the sole national reinsurer.
Insurance penetration in India is very
low compared to the global average.
The sector requires capital to expand
and ensure better access to insurance
services, especially in rural areas and
for economically weaker sections.
Enhancement of the foreign equity
cap to 49 per cent with the safeguard of
Indian ownership and control is a critical aspect of the Ordinance, which will
potentially enhance capital availability,
the Ministry added. The government
further said the Ordinance will also substantially enhance penalty provisions
to ensure compliance with Insurance
Laws by companies, which is essential
to uphold the consumer interest.
The Insurance Laws Amendment

discussion despite being approved
by the Select Committee of the Upper

The total capital deployed in the
private life insurance sector is close
to Rs 35,000 crore. With FDI at 26

Ajmal wasn’t feeling
effective enough: Coach
‘No Indian conspiracy behind pullout’
Saeed Ajmal
Karachi, Dec 28 (PTI):
Rejecting suggestions
of an Indian conspiracy
in Saeed Ajmal’s pullout from next year’s ODI
cricket World Cup, Pakistan’s bowling coach Muhammed Akram has said
the off-spinner withdrew
as he did not feel ‘effective enough’ after reworking his suspect bowling
action.
Akram strongly refuted assertions that
India was behind
the crackdown
against bowlers
with illegal actions
to target Ajmal and
Muhammad Hafeez.
‘First of all I don’t think
anyone is involved. Until the ICC allowed it
Saeed and others kept
on playing without problems. Now
with new protocol in place things
have changed,’ Akram told ‘Ary News
channel’.
Akram, who is one of the experts
working on correcting Ajmal’s bowling action, also made it clear that the
decision to pull out of the World
Cup was taken by the suspended off-spinner himself.
‘It was purely a decision by
Saeed who felt his bowling
after modication was still not
effective enough for international cricket,’ Akram, who
is also the head coach
of Pakistan’s National
Cricket Academy, said.
The PCB announced yesterday that
Saeed would continue remedial work
on his bowling action and would not
be sent for further biomechanic tests
to Chennai until he is condent himself about his action.

Sarita keen to win

Sarita Devi
Kolkata, Dec 28:
Overwhelmed by the support she
received from Boxing India and her
fellow countrymen including cricket
icon Sachin Tendulkar while facing
the prospect of a life ban, boxer L
Sarita Devi hopes to make it count
by winning a medal at the 2016 Rio
Olympics.
‘I really thank Sachin Tendulkar,
Boxing India and my fellow countrymen who stood behind me and gave
me a second chance. I don’t want to
let go their support in vain and win an
Olympic medal,’ Sarita Devi, who was
handed a one-year ban by AIBA for
showing dissent at the Asian Games
Incheon in October, said here.
Here in the city for a felicitation
programme, the Manipuri boxer said
she wants to forget the past and start
a new life.
‘I don’t want to talk about what happened. I was very much mentally disturbed and I’ve forgotten every bit of
it. All my focus is now on earning my
country an Olympic medal in 2016,’
the 29-year-old said.
The lightweight pugilist was furious
after losing her seminal to local favourite Park Ji-na and she refused to
accept the bronze medal, prompting
the AIBA to suspend her indenitely.
correction. However, they haven’t
intimated us about the timeframe.
Pragyan is still in Hyderabad but will
head for Chennai soon,’ Agarwal
told PTI yesterday. Ojha’s action has
been under cloud for quite some time
now despite being the quickest Indian
bowler to reach to 100-wicket milestone. He has taken 113 wickets from
24 Test matches and 21 wickets from
18 ODIs. He also played 6 T20 Internationals in which he got 10 wickets.
Ojha has been at times criticised for
wearing full sleeves while bowling in
order to hide the elbow kink which is
above permissible limit of 15 degrees.
Ironically, in his last Test match
against West Indies in Mumbai, he
got man-of-the-match award for his
match-haul of 10 for 89.
Ronaldo keen to
improve on 2014
Madrid, Dec 28:
Not content with four titles in 2014,
including his second Champions
League, prolic Real Madrid forward
Cristiano Ronaldo is determined
to make next year an even bigger
success.
Ronaldo netted 51 goals in 47
appearances last season, setting a
record of 17 goals for one edition of
Europe’s elite club competition, as
Real secured a record-extending 10th
continental crown and the King’s Cup.
The Portugal captain continued
where he left off in 2014-15 as
the world’s richest club by income
claimed the European Super Cup and
Club World Cup and he has amassed
an incredible 32 goals in 25 games in
all competitions.
His haul of 25 in 14 La Liga matches
is a Spanish record and he looks set
to smash the biggest total for a season in Spain’s top ight of 50 scored
by Lionel Messi in 2011-12.
‘It would be a dream if 2015 was like
2014 or even better,’ Ronaldo said in
an interview published in sports daily
As
on Saturday.
‘It is possible to do it because Madrid is always a candidate to win the
competitions it is playing in,’ added
the 29-year-old.
‘We have a team spirit that can help
us win the most titles possible and
we will ght to the death to get them.’
thinks like a champion. He himself
wants to work further on his bowling
so that he is as effective as before.
He is facing issues with the elbow
extension while bowling the Doosra
delivery. But even otherwise
he has developed a carrom
ball and also seam up delivery
to improve his effectiveness,’
Akram said.
The academy’s head coach said
that Ajmal himself will now decide
when to take the ICC test.
‘Life does not end with the
World Cup and there is lot of
cricket after the tournament
and Saeed also realises this
and is accordingly working more on
his modied action,’ Akram said.
Akram was also asked about the
reasons for not sending Ajmal for
the informal bowling test in Chennai.
‘There were issues there rst of all
the visas came late and secondly now
even Saeed wants to rst improve
his effectiveness before taking any
tests,’ Akram said. The PCB after
a high level meeting on Saturday
agreed that Ajmal still needs more
time to work on correcting his bowling
action in order to pass the ofcial ICC
bowling action test. But it conrmed
that all-rounder, Muhammad Hafeez
would y to Chennai next week for an
informal test and if that was cleared,
he would then be sent for the ICC ofcial test to enable him to bowl in the
World Cup. The PCB decision comes
after a lot of delay in taking a decision
by the PCB which gave every facility
to the off-spinner to correct his bowling action since he was suspended
from bowling in international cricket
in September by the ICC. The PCB
said it had taken a decision on Ajmal
based on reports from Pakistan’s
former Test spinner Saqlain Mushtaq
and the national team bowling coach
Mushtaq Ahmed and the head coach
of the national cricket academy.

Terry is all gold for Mourinho & Chelsea
London, Dec 28:
Former England captain John Terry
is performing as well in central
defence as he was a decade ago,
according to Chelsea manager Jose
Mourinho.
Terry scored for the second time
in ve days when his rst-half goal,
the 61st of his club career, paved
the way for Premier League leaders
Chelsea to beat London rivals West
Ham United 2-0 on Friday.
Just as pleasingly for Mourinho, the
34-year-old gave a masterclass in the
art of defending as he subdued West
Ham’s in-form striker Andy Carroll.
‘He is full of condence,’ Mourinho
told reporters after Chelsea kept
up their 100 per cent home
record in the league this
season to stay three points
clear at the top.
‘I see my John of 2004,
2005 and 2006, I don’t see
any difference. The only difference is seeing his twins
when they go to the training
ground, they had only just
been born in that period but
now they are running around
and kicking balls.
‘John is playing so good but
I always say the same, when
the team is playing so well
it’s easy for individuals,’ the
Portuguese added.
John Terry
Mourinho, who led Chelsea
to the league title in 2005
and 2006 and returned for
a second stint in charge 18
months ago, said the upbeat
mood at Stamford Bridge
was in stark contrast to the
atmosphere that characterised the end of his time with
previous club Real Madrid.
‘Our results are good and
the players are happy,’ he
explained. ‘I’m happy as a
coach because the team is
playing well.
‘I’m happy as a guy because I love my players.
It’s important to feel happy
with the people that surround me, it’s
something I missed for a while.’
Chelsea, who are also through to
the Champions League last 16 and
League Cup semi-finals, narrowly
missed out on the Premier League
title last season but Mourinho believes there is a big difference in his
side now.
‘We are a much better team when
we have the ball,’ he added. ‘Last year
we were very strong defensively and
very well organised but we lacked a
bit of creativity when we had the ball.
‘The challenge this year was to bring
that creativity and dynamic without
losing the defensive qualities of the
team.’
Ganguly backs
captain Dhoni
Melbourne, Dec 28 (PTI):
Former India captain Sourav
Ganguly feels that current skipper
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has not
been able to get the best out of
the team at the Test level for quite
some time despite being the leader
for close to 60 matches.
Ganguly, who has been an expert
commentator in the ongoing Test
series between India and Australia,
termed Dhoni’s record as an ODI
captain has been exceptional but
said the veteran wicketkeeperbatsman has been struggling for
some time as the skipper at the
ve-day format.
‘It’s not just these two matches,
it’s for a while now (that Dhoni has
struggled). He just has not really
got the team going at Test match
level. That’s up to the selectors but
he has had a lot of time as captain,
close to 60 Test matches. I think he
has had a lot of time,’ Ganguly said.
‘I think Dhoni is a good captain.
The record he has in one-day
cricket, he is a good captain. But
in Test conditions overseas, it’s
just fallen away a bit. This series is
not over yet so maybe we can talk
differently at the end of this series.
Hopefully he can reinvent himself
and nd a way to lead this team
forward,’ he added.
Ganguly spoke highly of combative vice-captain Virat Kohli, whom
he termed as the ‘future’ of Indian
cricket.
‘I think he (Kohli) is the future.
He will be captain of India. You
need positivity. You need positive
captains. MS will captain at the
World Cup, then we’ll have to see
what happens after that,’ the former
left-handed batsman said.
‘I like his (Kohli’s) passion. You’ve
got to have passion. It should
mean something to you, any job
you do. I like him, I like what I see,’
he was quoted as saying in Daily
Telegraph.
Dhoni, 33, has played 90 Tests,
but Ganguly said that he should
continue to play on under Kohli if
a captaincy change was decided
upon.
‘Absolutely. When Sachin nished
as Test captain, he played under
me. When I nished as Test captain, I played under Dravid. Dravid
played under MS. Ricky Ponting
played under Michael Clarke. I do
not think that’s a problem,’ he said.
‘As you long as you keep performing, captaincy is just one role. Your
major role should be to contribute
to the team.’
Misbah needs
time for full
fitness: PCB
Karachi, Dec 28 (PTI):
Pakistan Cricket Board has said
that Test and ODI captain Misbahul-Haq has made improvement
on his hamstring injury but still
required more time to be 100 per
cent t.
In a statement on the fitness
status of Misbah, left-arm pacer
Junaid Khan, batsman Sohaib
Maqsood and all-rounder Ehsan
Adil, the Board did not make it
clear when these players would be
available to play again.
The statement, full of medical
terms and explanations, and prepared by the GM Medical in the
PCB, Dr Sohail Saleem stated
that Misbah needed more time for
a complete recovery.
Initially, it was said that Misbah
required four to six weeks to make
a complete recovery from his hamstring problem.
Misbah strained one of his hamstrings while elding against New
Zealand in the recently concluded
ODI series.
‘Fresh scans done on Misbah
suggested that the swelling/edema
around his strained muscles has
reduced to a great extent. His
scans suggested a Grade II strain
of the hamstring. Misbah thus
progressed on to phase two of his
rehabilitation, after the criteria for
this progression were met,’ the
statement said.
‘He now has a normal walking
stride without any pain, jogging too
is pain-free and his resistance testing against 70 per cent of manual
resistance is pain-free.

Saradha, Sinha and SC kept CBI in limelight
New Delhi, Dec 28 (PTI):
Controversy surrounding its chief
Ranjit Sinha, the Supreme Court and
the Saradha scam kept the CBI in headlines during the year as it tried hard to
maintain its reputation amid reprimands
from courts over closure
reports and charge sheets in the coal
scam.
Sinha, who retired this month, kept attracting media attention as the Supreme
Court made scathing observations
against his purported meetings with
the suspects in the 2G scam and coal
cases and even directed him to recuse
from the crucial 2G scam probe- a first
in the history of the agency.
The issue of the purported visitors’ diary, which carried details of his alleged
frequent meetings with the suspects
in the scams at his residence, and the
letter written to the then Attorney General allegedly seeking re-investigation
of 2G case brought forth the ire of the
Supreme Court on him.
Sinha, an IPS officer with over four
decades of policing career, was asked
by the apex court to recuse himself
from the 2G scam probe with Additional
Director R K Dutta given charge of the
case till the CBI chief’s retirement.
The Supreme Court had also asked
the CBI not to take any final decision
on coal scam cases after the allegations against Sinha were leveled by two
NGOs. The apex court, however, did
not take any adverse action
against him in the final orders and
Boult double gives
Kiwis the edge
Christchurch, Dec 28 (AFP):
Two late wickets by Trent Boult put
New Zealand back in control of the
first Test against Sri Lanka today after
a maiden Test century by Dimuth
Karunaratne had briefly given the
tourists a glimmer of hope.
Sri Lanka were closing in on wiping
out their 303-run first innings deficit
with seven wickets in hand when Boult
brought their cautious progress at
Christchurch’s Hagley Oval to a halt.
He removed the defiant Karunaratne
for 152 and Niroshan Dickwella for four
as Sri Lanka were reduced to 293 for
5 at stumps, still 10 runs from making
New Zealand bat again.
Angelo Mathews is not out 53 with
Tharindu Kaushal on five while Boult,
New Zealand’s chief wicket taker, has
three for 62.
Karunaratne’s wicket was vital for
New Zealand after the 26-year-old
had stood in 87-run partnership with
Lahiru Thirimanne (25) for the third
wicket and then a 97-run stand with
Angelo Mathews.

Tamilnadu batsman B Aparajith is dismissed by Arnab Nandi on
the opening day of the Ranji Trophy match against Railways in
Chennai today.
Karthik, who scored a blistering

Madhya Pradesh, didn’t last too
long as he was dismissed by Ashish
Yadav for 15.
Aparajith’s twin brother Indrajith,
who joined Abhinav in the middle,
ensured that Tamilnadu didn’t suffer
more jolts as they took the total close
to the 100-mark. Abhinav was batting
on 35 and Indrajith on 15. Tamilnadu
brought in ODI captain R Sathish in
place of the rested Laxmipathy Balaji
for this game.
It is a crucial match for former
champions Tamilnadu, who started
the 2014-’15 Ranji campaign poorly
after being brushed aside by holders
Karnataka in the opening match in
Bangalore. They, however, bounced
back strongly by crushing Jammu &
Kashmir at Dindigul thanks to the
heroics by the spinners Malolan Rangarajan and Aushik Srinivas.
The previous game against Madhya

share honours though they conceded
a huge first innings lead before hitting
back on the final day and forcing the
visiting team to fight for a draw.

In other Ranji games being played
across the country, former champion
Mumbai was 158 for 2 against Bengal, while Jharkhand was 161 for 4
against Kerala.

RUSA at
slow pace
New Delhi, Dec 28 (PTI):
The Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha
Abhiyan (RUSA), which seeks to
improve overall quality of higher education in the country, is progressing
at a very slow pace and still ‘way of
the mark’ in infrastructure
augmentation, creation of universities and faculty recruitment support.
As against the plan of creating
45 varsities by upgrading existing
autonomous colleges during the
12th Plan, only one could see the
light. Similarly, only five universities
have been created by conversion of
colleges in a cluster as against the
target of 35.
Though the mission is just over a
year old with the mandate of fulfilling the target by 2017, the progress
achieved so far is still ‘way of the
mark’, admitted officials in the HRD
Ministry.
Recently, in a written reply to the
Lok Sabha, HRD Minister Smriti Irani
said while RUSA provides faculty
recruitment support for 5,000 positions, the target achieved so far has
been only 156.

CBI to file case against
Dera chief tomorrow
New Delhi, Dec 28 (PTI):
CBI is likely to register a case
against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh
of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda
tomorrow in connection with the alleged forced castration of his followers inside his Dera.
CBI sources said the FIR was to be
registered yesterday but could not
be done because of some technical
issues and is likely to be registered tomorrow. They said the agency move
is the result of a Punjab and Haryana
High Court order directing it to take
action against the Dera chief, who is
soon going to make his movie debut
with ‘Messenger of God’.
A former Dera follower, Hansraj
Chauhan, had approached the
High Court alleging that he, along
with around 400 saints of the Dera,
was castrated inside the ashram on
the orders of Gurmeet Ram Rahim
Singh.
Seeking a CBI probe, Chauhan
has claimed before the bench that
castration process of Dera followers
is being done by the chief through
doctors employed in his hospital.
Chauhan had said in the petition
that they were assured that those
who would get castrated will be
able to meet the God through the
Dera head.
Justice K Kannan of the High
Court passed the order on the petition ordering a CBI inquiry into the
incident. Taking cognizance of the
petition, the HC had earlier ordered
medical examination of petitioner
Chauhan from the government
multi-speciality hospital which found
that he has been castrated.
Besides, in a report submitted
before the High Court, the State
government said that it has recorded
the statements of seven persons,
associated with the Dera head, and
all of them have confirmed that they
have been castrated, Singh said.
The Dera chief, who is going to hit
the big screen next month with his
film ‘Messenger of God (MSG)’, has
already courted controversy with Sikh
organisations, including Akal Takht,
seeking a ban on it.

He also brought the Haridasa religion,

Tirtha, into limelight. He belonged to the Dvaita
school of Madhvacharya. Vyasatirtha’s genius lay in his clear
understanding and exposition of all his opposing schools of
thought, for which even his Vyasaraya opponents admired him.
His noted debate was with Basava Bhatta of Kalinga which was
won comprehensively after a thirty day -debate. It was during
the time of Krishnadevaraya that Vyasatirtha saw the peak of
his influence over the empire. Vyasatirtha was the Rajguru of
Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara empire. It was under his
tutelage that the great king took the empire to its zenith. The
king’s admiration for the saint was so high that he regarded
Vyasatirtha as his Kuladevata or family God, as evidenced
by many writings attributed to the great king. It was under his
guidance that Carnatic music revolution started in southern
India. Both Purandaradasa, the father of Carnatic music, and
Kanakadasa were his students. Krishna Nee Begane Baaro is
one of his famous Kannada compositions. He also composed
the Prameya shloka which brings out the nine fundamental
tenets of Dvaita philosophy in a single shloka.
