Tires: check the tire air pressure and make
sure your tires have sufficient tread.
Radiator: have the antifreeze levels checked.
Belts: inspect the belts and hoses for cracks or
leaks.
Oil: ask your mechanic about switching to a
thinner grade of engine oil for better
performance in colder temperatures.
Wipers: inspect the windshield wipers and

PIKE COUNTY AREA AGENCY ON AGING INFO:
Pike County Area Agency on Aging and the AARP
Foundation Tax-Aide program are seeking volunteers to
support the free tax preparation service provided for low to
moderate income taxpayers, especially those aged 60 & over.





AARP Foundation Tax-Aide thrives due to the remarkable
efforts of its volunteer base. With nearly 50 million low-tomoderate-income taxpayers helped and growing, there are
always opportunities for new volunteers. Lack of experience
shouldn’t stop anyone from volunteering. Tax volunteers
must complete a tax preparation workshop from the Internal
Revenue Service prior to working with taxpayers.
For more information, visit www.aarp.org/taxaide or call
1-888-OURAARP (1-888-687-2277). AARP Foundation
Tax-Aide is offered in conjunction with the IRS.

Warm up 5 or 10 minutes to get heart rate up
slowly.
Dress appropriately in layers to adjust to the
temperature outside. If you become
overheated, take a break.
Pick the right waterproof boots. They will
protect the feet from the cold as well as keep
them dry.
Pick up a small shovel. Depending on how wet
the snow is, a shovel full of snow can weigh up
to 15 pounds!
Stay hydrated. Have a water bottle handy just
inside the garage and take a few sips after
every 15 minutes of shoveling snow.
Set a time limit.
Lift with the legs, not the back.
Push the snow. Pushing is easier than lifting.
Never shovel alone. Let a family member or
neighbor know you are shoveling so they can
check on you from time to time.
