Staffing news
We say thank you and farewell to Mrs Stevenson in the English department who leaves
us today, and we welcome the following new staff to the school in January: Miss
Nelson, Head of Science and Miss Tucker, Head of English. We have also appointed two
other members of staff who will be joining us in April: Mrs Stockwell, Head of Maths
and Mr Russell, Assistant Headteacher (Student Progress and Achievement). We are
delighted to welcome them all at this exciting time in our development as an 11-16
school. They are all successful middle leaders who will bring with them a wealth of
experience of teaching at GCSE and A level.
Ms Wildman is starting a new role in the school in January as our School Challenge
Co-ordinator. She will be working closely with the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) and
will have oversight of initiatives such as curriculum links with our Family of Primary
Schools, activities for Gifted and Talented students and extra curricular activities. As
part of this role, and in response to suggestions from parents/carers, we now have in
place a new Duke of Edinburgh scheme and after Christmas we will be introducing the
Young Leaders’ Award (PE) and Arts Award.
Parental Support
In connection with our move to 11-16, I am pleased to be receiving offers of support
from parents/carers on a range of issues. These include parents/carers who would be
happy giving talks to our students in some of the new subjects we will be offering at
GCSE, such as Business. If you feel you have something to offer our students in the
future and would like to play an active role in our school’s development, please do not
hesitate to let me know.
Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud!
… Also known as our Third Generation (3G) artificial grass pitch! All work is on
schedule with a completion date of February. We will give you an update in our next
newsletter. The pitch will be a fantastic addition to our already good PE and Sport
facilities and will be available for use by the community as well as the school. This,
together with the new Fitness Suite which will be ready for September, means our PE
provision in core lessons, GCSE, extracurricular and enrichment activities through the
Young Leaders’ Award and Sports Leaders’ Award will be second to none in the area.
Extra Curricular
Mr Edwards has given a full round up in this newsletter of some excellent achievements
this term. Thanks go to him, Miss Trudgian and all the staff who support the PE
department’s work. Mrs Hounsome and a group of staff also deserve our thanks for the
Christmas Concert and the World War I Evening. It is very uplifting to see the students’
talents emerge through such performances.

Sunshine is gone, I only see grey
Rats are crawling where I lay
Wish I had a bit more time
Laying here in my prime.
They fight in this desert of dirt

My shrieks of torture lasted for a minute at most,

The sheer amount of evidence we were shown, really
put into perspective how much we owe the soldiers
who fought in World War One. Our tour guide,
Martin - an ex-major in the army – fed our minds
with facts and stories that brought the war to life. We
all now have a greater understanding of what it was
really like to fight in World War One.
We visited many cemeteries during our trip to
Belgium and France. We looked at German, English,
French and Canadian lines. During our Canadian
tour at Vimy Ridge, we went into the original, deep
tunnels used by the soldiers to get up to the frontline
trenches. We also got to go into the trench systems,
looking over No Man’s Land, just as the soldiers
would have done.
Additionally we were taken to many monuments,
including the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
This was a breath-taking sight to see Mother Canada,
flanked by the huge columns of pale limestone,
overlooking the battlefield where her soldiers had
fought.
We even found Walter Allen, on one of the plaques
in the cemetery at Arras close to where he was killed
in action on Thursday 21st March 1918 aged 24. He
had attended Kibworth Grammar School as a boy
and had lived in Great Glen.
One of the parts that meant a lot to me was being
involved in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin
Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres.
This ceremony takes place at 8 o’clock every
evening, and it was very moving. I had the
privilege of being one of the students chosen to
lay a wreath on behalf of Kibworth High
School.
We finished the week full of information and
respect for those who had fought and played a
role in the war and a left with a greater
understanding of what the soldiers must have
gone through.
We really appreciate the opportunity to have
visited these sites. It is a trip that will stay in our
memories forever. We will never forget.

As part of our 50th Birthday Celebrations this year we buried a “Time Capsule” in the
foundations of the Third Generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP) which is
currently under construction. Contributions from students included an account of
what it is like to be a teenager in 2014, information about their favourite hobbies
and copies of photographs. The capsule and its contents were buried on Thursday
11 December and will lay untouched until....who knows when in the future...?

Three groups of Y8 students worked on a project over 2 x one hour lessons
(The French Shoebox Challenge), after studying 'furniture in the bedroom' as a recent
topic. I collected shoeboxes from a number of local stores in Leicester and they were
very happy to help with the project.
The students were given a brief and asked to work in small groups, making a shoebox
into a miniature bedroom, with the contents labelled in French.
Students submitted their shoebox for judging and one team from each class won a
small prize. Irregular Choice, a shoe shop in Leicester, had asked if I could show
them the final model, once the students had finished. I returned to their store, a
week later, to show the 'room' made in
the Irregular Choice shoe box. The
manager of the store was very
impressed with the students’ work and
initiative and took pictures to put on
their FaceBook page.

the challenge and using their French in
an unexpected way!

The Harborough Mail and Lutterworth Mail’s 13th annual Sports Awards ceremony was held
at the Three Swans Hotel conference suite in Harborough on Thursday 27 November 2014.
Mail readers nominated dozens of people and teams for the awards and a judging panel then
selected a shortlist in each of the ten categories, and then the winners. All nominees won a
certificate with the winners also receiving a glass trophy.

“Kibworth High School has been supporting Rainbows Hospice for a number of years by collecting
treats for children connected to the hospice (either receiving treatment themselves or a family
member). In November pupils in Year 7 were introduced to Robert Haylock, Ambassador for
Rainbows. He informed the pupils of the excellent work that Rainbows do to support life-challenged
youngsters and their families. He also showed a moving Youtube video of Charlotte Blissett (sister
of Lattisha and Georgia, both attending Kibworth High) singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
The pupils were invited to donate presents and seasonal fayre for distribution to the young people at
their annual parties. A list of suggested gifts was circulated – these ranged from selection boxes to
shower gel, Christmas Crackers and mince pies.
Early in December Robert Haylock returned and each of our eight forms in Year 7 presented a
decorated box filled with festive treats. The students were delighted to be introduced to Charlotte
Blissett, who, along with Robert Haylock and two Year 7 boys, Luke Wright and Joseph Smith (both
having brothers attending the hospice), received the gifts on behalf of Rainbows.
Rainbows have asked that we thank parents and students for their generous gifts, which will be very
much appreciated by the children and young people receiving support from Rainbows”.

Please ensure that you have your emergency childcare plans in place for such
exceptional circumstances. If we have to close the school during the course of the
day for the same reasons, it is important that you agree in advance with your child
what they should do if they are sent home early (e.g. stay at home, go to a relative/

Information for staff, parents and governors
Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust recently launched a new way for young people to
get advice and support about health related issues. ChatHealth is an award-winning
school nurse messaging service for young people aged 11-19 years, available Monday
to Friday from 9am to 4pm (automatic bounce-backs respond to incoming messages
out of hours).
A secure “app” will be introduced later this year, enabling students to speak with a
nurse by instant messages on smartphones after logging-in with a username and
password. The aim is to further improve access to healthcare for young people and to
continue improving the quality and safety of the service. Young people have helped
develop the promotional material which we are using to advertise the service in our
school.
Information for Students
There’s a new number for texting our school nurse from your mobile phone.
ChatHealth, the school nurse messaging service, is confidential and available Monday
to Friday from 9am to 4pm. You can message for advice on all kinds of health issues,
like sexual health, emotional health and wellbeing, bullying, healthy eating and any
general health concerns. Look out for more information on the posters around school.
You can still get in touch with the school nurse in the same way as you might have
done before, if you prefer.

Between October half term and the upcoming Christmas holidays all our football teams
have been very busy with finishing local leagues and competing in the National cup
matches.
Year 7 Boys
The Year 7 Boys team are having a great first season having only lost once in 9
games. That loss was unfortunately their first league match which was frustrating as
it meant they finished 3rd in their league on goal difference from Thomas Estley in
2nd—who the boys drew with—and Leysland 1st—who the boys beat at home 4-3 in
the league. Even more frustrating as in our local league playoffs Leysland won their
semi final and the final and we are the only team to have beaten them!
In the National Cup the boys are on a roll having reached the 5th round where they
are due to play only other school in Leicestershire left in the last 64 teams (over 600
schools entered this competition).
Round 1
They beat Uppinham Community College 6-0
Round 2
They beat John Fernley, Melton 9-5
Round 3
They beat North Leamington School, Leamington Spa 2-1
Round 4
They beat Kinghurst School, Birmingham 2-0
In my 18 years at KHS Round 6 is the furthest any of our boys teams have reached so
the Year 7’s are on their way.
In Round 5 they play Quorn Rawlins (Loughborough) on Thursday 18 December away
2.15pm kick off.

Year 8 Boys
The Year 8 Boys have had a fantastic season so far having only lost once in 10 games.
They won their local league easily winning all 4 games against Welland Park,
Lutterworth, Thomas Estley & Leysland. In the semi-final playoff they beat Gartree
(who finished second in the other local league) 3-1 and then went onto beat Bushloe
1-0, in the final on Wednesday 19 November on Brockington’s 3G pitch under
floodlights. The final win was an excellent team performance and thoroughly deserved
and very satisfying having lost to Bushloe last season.

Unfortunately, their confidence on winning the Area Cup couldn’t be transferred to the
National Cup where after 3 good wins, they came up against a very strong school from
Milton Keynes and went out of the competition.
Year 9 Boys
The Year 9 Boys have had a very frustrating season riddled with injury and
inconsistency.
Having done the double of Area Cup and County Cup last season expectations were
high.
After 10 games they had 7 wins and 3 losses but 2 of these loses put them out of the
Area Cup at the semi-final stage 2-1 to local rivals Gartree. In the National Cup the
boys reached Round 4 and then came up against a very physical side from Luton and
lost 2-1, but played extremely well.
Year 7 Girls
This season for the first time there is a Year 7 Girls 9 a-side league and our girls are
doing very well having played 2 and won 2! They beat Leysland 2-1 in their first game
and Thomas Estley 3-1 in their second game. They have 2 more league matches
against Brockington and Welland Park and we wish them good luck.
Squad: Sinead Kirk, Claire Waterfield, Larisa Djikak, Ellie Bache, Georgia Raymond,
Tara Kirk, Neve Watson-Smith, Molly Illingworth, Kylie Fromant, Amillia Ross, Jaya Lint,
Mia Gill.
As well as playing league matches a squad of 6 played in an indoor 5 a-side qualifying
tournament at Bushloe:Sinead Kirk, Tara Kirk, Larisa Djiekak, Georgia Raymond, Neve Watson-Smith, Kylie
Fromant.
The girls played 4 matches winning 3 and losing one and they ended up 1st and go
through to the County final after Christmas. Well done!

Year 7
This year’s year 7 Netball club has been very popular. This meant we have been able
to rotate a lot of players and positions throughout the season. We have played some
very strong Netball fixtures in our south Leicester league, the year 7’s best game was
against Leysland winning 5-3. After the Christmas break Netball club will resume in
preparation for our final games of the season.
Year 8
Our Year 8 Netball teams have had a great season. Winning all but one game in the
South Leicester league meant we were joint top of the table. Frustratingly, on goal
difference, we did not qualify for the semi finals. Despite this, our girls have played
some brilliant matches and have played as a very strong team. After the holidays we
have a few more fixtures to look forward and training towards their county tournament
in March will begin.
Year 9
Wow! What a year this has been for our year 9 Netball squad! The girls won every
single match in the south Leicester league, resulting in a semi final match against
Manor High School. Our strength shone through with an outstanding score of 35-1.
The final was a nail biting match against Bushloe, but yet again our Kibworth spirit
drove our girls to win 16-10. With the league win behind them the team entered the
County tournament with confidence, and so they should! Yet again, we were the only
dominating state school and only just lost in the final to
Uppingham School. Coming runners up in the county
tournament enables the team to progress through to the
regional round on 31st January. I wish the girls every bit of
success they deserve for this tournament!

Hockey matches have began this year with the year 9 team playing fixtures at
Leicester Grammar School. We’ve had some fantastic matches against Welland Park,
Leicester Grammar A and Leicester Grammar B. The team has strength in all areas of
the pitch but in particular Georgia Barton has shown to be a very strong goal keeper.
The year 8 teams haven’t began their league fixtures yet- these will commence after
Christmas. But their friendly match against Welland Park showed some true potential.
Grace Clarke in particular showed herself to be a confident captain with very good
skills.
Good luck to both the year 8 and year 9 teams for their matches after the Christmas
holidays.
