Week of December 29, 2014 BALANCING ACT: CROP UPDATE ASPARAGUS – Peruvian product available; Extremely light jumbo size. AVOCADO - Good supply and quality. BELL PEPPERS - Supplies of both color bells and green bells are starting to increase. Gold bells are steady. Maymo, the Lemon Beagle, has talent. This talent is enormous patience with his owner, as 100 fruits and vegetables (some heavy) are continuously placed on Maymo’s head — for 100 seconds. The stoic beagle puppy appears to have the whole ‘balancing act’ down pat — whether it’s lettuce, asparagus, or even half a watermelon. But after 100 seconds of non-stop produce-onhead, YouTube star Maymo had had enough. BERRIES - Strawberries: Oxnard region has some quality issues with soft and bruised berries. Light volumes coming out of Coachella, Irvine and Oceanside have better quality. Raspberries: Lighter availability as we move throughout Dec into early Jan. Blackberries: Volume continues to increase with better quality than previous weeks. Blueberries: Chilean shipments have increased at US ports increasing availability. Quality is good. BROCCOLI - Good supply & quality. CARROTS - Volume on Jumbo size carrots continue to drop. Tight supplies on Jumbo and Med for next 1 to 2 months until desert crop begins. LEAF - Quality is good; green and red leaf items readily available. Colossal and regular romaine hearts have better suppliers compared to past weeks. LETTUCE – Good supply; Slight seeder still exists but overall quality is good. MELONS - Cantaloupe: Offshore melons have been arriving on the west coast but are extremely limited. Lower than normal temps in the growing areas have slowed down production. Quality is good. Honeydew: Mexican supplies have decreased as growing areas are finishing. Offshore dews are arriving now with 5’s and 6’s the main sizes and volumes are not keeping up with the current demand. Quality is good. Watermelon: Extremely LTD. Jalisco has not yet begun. Market will continue at high FOB’s for the winter. ONIONS - Super Colossal and Colossal supplies are lighter as shippers move into later storage that have smaller sizing. This could be the trend for the balance of the season so expect a slightly stronger market for the big yellows in the short-term. CAULIFLOWER - Market is steady. Santa Maria and Yuma are the main growing regions. Yellow discoloration and slight spotting continue sporadically upon arrivals. POTATOES - Idaho 70ct and larger is slightly higher pricing and will continue to rise due to light supplies. 40ct and 50ct are still very limited. Some Idaho shippers are bringing over WA 40ct and 50ct to fill orders. CITRUS - Lemons: Desert fruit size much larger; 165’s and smaller fruit getting tight. Oranges: External color on Navels continues to develop with cooler nights. Internal maturity is ahead of normal. Limes: Good supply and quality. SQUASH - Supplies’ improving on newer field product; the market remains unsettled and two tiered market follows. Yellow squash continues short but is starting to settle slightly. CUCUMBERS - Production from Sonora is steady but some quality issues. Sinaloa production has started with excellent quality. GRAPES - The green seedless market has transitioned to all imported fruit and supplies are improving. We expect to see a higher market the first few weeks of the New Year. The forecast for a stronger market is based upon projected retail demand the first few weeks of January. GREEN ONIONS – Mexico production has good supply and quality. STONE FRUIT - Light supplies of Nectarines and peaches; This should change as the first wave of Chilean fruit hits the ports in greater volume the last few days of the month. Cherries are also increasing in availability as the first few weeks of January should bring peak volumes from Chile. Quality on all is reported as good. TOMATOES - Round tomato volumes continue limited as growers start to transition to mainland Mexico. Roma volume are increasing but color is coming across very light. Grape tomatoes are in much better supply and quality is starting to improve.
