New Homeowner Orientation
Happy New Year to All!
It is time to say goodbye to 2014
and Welcome 2015!
2014 has been a great year for
Solera Diamond Valley. I joined the
community in April and I am very
thankful for the wonderful welcome that everyone gave me.
We have had a busy year with many great events and get
togethers for all to enjoy. I would like to take this time to thank
all those who dedicated hours upon hours of their time to
assure our community’s success. Without a doubt, it is what
each and every one of you put into the community that makes
Solera Diamond Valley such a wonderful place to live. May we
all remember the good times of 2014 and reach further for even
greater times in 2015 and years to come.
We will be having a new homeowner orientation
on Thursday, January 29, 2014 at 2:00p.m. in the
Deergrass Room at the Mountain View Lodge. This
meeting is open to all new homeowners and we will go
over the Association’s governing documents, rules and
regulations, assessments, Board of Directors, on-site
staff, homeowner improvements, and hopefully
answer any additional questions. If you have closed
escrow in the last six months, or if you were unable
to attend the last orientation, please mark your
calendar and come by to learn more about the
benefits of living in this community. There will be
a “Meet & Mingle” following the New
Homeowner Orientation at 4:00 p.m.

Holiday Hours
As discussed in the June 2014 edition of The View,
Solera Diamond Valley homeowners are subject to the CFD
No. 2006-56 (CFD) Special Tax. The CFD special tax will
be included annually on the homeowners’ Riverside
County property tax bills. Per the governing documents of
the CFD, homeowners have the option to prepay the CFD
special tax. If a Homeowner elects to prepay, the CFD
special tax will be excluded from the Homeowner’s future
property tax bills and the CFD special tax lien will be
released via a recorded instrument at the County of
Riverside. Homeowners interested in this option will need
to send a written request to EMWD stating their intent to
prepay the CFD special tax. EMWD will respond within 5
business days providing the Homeowner with a nonrefundable deposit amount required for calculating the
CFD prepayment amount. Upon receipt of the nonrefundable deposit amount, EMWD will provide a
Prepayment Quote within 15 business days. For further
inquires on the steps and requirements for prepaying the
CFD special tax, Homeowners can contact EMWD’s
Special Tax Consultant at 1-800-439-6553.

ships. They were built in 10 days and one complete ship
was launched every day. Amazing!
In 1944, at the age of 29 and a man with kids, he was
drafted. He was among the last to be called. He served one
year in the Army. In 1945, Lonie was discharged to go home
to his family. His next job was with a drilling company in the
oil fields. Quickly, Lonie
advanced in job positions
and became a boss.
With experience in
the oil fields, Lonie was
offered a job with
THUMS to work on
the oil well islands
off the shore of
Long Beach. Lonie
was in charge of
oil production for
15 years. Each
island
had
between 46 and
160 wells. What
an interesting
job!
What’s
next?
Ah,
retirement.
When
the
Gibsons arrived
in California in
1942, they lived
in government
housing for 10
years. In 1952,
they bought their
first home (where his grandson lives today). The
family activities consisted of water skiing and trips to
Oklahoma almost every year. They loved visiting
relatives there.
Lonie’s main hobby was restoring old cars. He
totally restored a 1930 Model A Ford, which he still
owns. He also restored a 1966 Mustang and owns a 1926
Chevrolet Sedan (all original). Lonie always loved
engines, or anything mechanical.
Lonie moved from Long Beach to SDV in February,
2010. Currently, he belongs to the Hemet Model A Club.
Lonie spends his time assembling puzzles, watching sports
and visiting old car shows. This is the time for the simple life!
On July 12, 2015, Mr. Lonie Gibson will officially become a
Centurion! Congrats on a long and healthy life.

Centurion? Well, almost. Lonie Gibson is 99 1/2 years young. He
was born in Apache, Oklahoma, on July 12, 1915.
The family moved a lot, including one year living in a tent, while
farming 160 acres. In 1923 they moved to Three Sands, Oklahoma; an
oil boom town, where oil was discovered in 1919. By 1925, Three
Sands was the largest oil field in the State of Oklahoma and led the
nation in oil production. Overnight,
Three Sands population was 12,000.
By 1940, it was all gone. There are
no homes, buildings or derricks
remaining - only the cemetery.
Lonie attended Hope Primary
School from grades 2 to 8. The
school’s pet name was Frog Holler.
From there, he went to Marland
High School. During his 9th grade,
he met his future wife, Lorene. They
were pretty sweet on each other. For
the 11th grade, Lonie’s dad sent him
to another high school. He hoped to
split up the couple, as they were a
bit too serious. It didn’t work. The
couple continued their teenage
romance. So, he went back to
Marland H.S., where he graduated
in 1935.
Lonie and Lorene were married
shortly after graduation. They
enjoyed 67 years of marriage, until
she passed on in 2003. The Gibsons
had three sons. Only one married
and had children. This gave Lonie
two grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
In the beginning of marriage, Lonie worked several different
jobs. Among his early jobs, were farm work ($.50 a day) and picking
cotton. During the depression, Lonie worked on laying oil pipeline 65
miles across Oklahoma for $.67/hour. The Gibsons traveled with the
workers, without a home. At night, they had to find a place to sleep.
Often times, the young couple would knock on a farmer’s door and
ask to spend the night, sometimes sleeping in the barn. However,
Lonie had the prestigious job of putting warm tar around the pipe
joints. It was the best job to keep his hands warm during the winter. It
was a tough job, with no breaks and staying running from sunup to
sundown. During the depression, he was lucky to have a job.
Moving on, Lonie began servicing wells for oil production. Then
he decided to attend welding school. In 1940, he got a job at Fruhauf
Trailer Co. in Kansas City, Kansas. And what happened in 1941? The
war broke out. Lonie was hired by California Shipbuilding and the
family moved to Long Beach, Ca. He worked on Victory and Liberty

Walk - This will be a plotted walk that will show homeowners a quick and easy way to stay
fit. We will designate along the way a quarter point, followed by the half mile. And then
finishing up at the mile. This way you can choose the route for a short walk or longer
workout.
The superclass would be held in the Aerobics Room and is designed for homeowners
requiring a more intense workout.
The equipment training will include training of all the equipment in the gym area.
The circuit training could be 30 minutes to an hour example of circuit training in the gym in
a circuit training format.

NEW YEAR, NEW LIBRARY

The newly expanded SDV library received approval and funding at the
November board meeting. Now that the beautiful book shelves have been
installed, we are going to celebrate. A grand opening event with light
refreshments has been scheduled for Friday, January 16 at 2:00 pm.
Come and view the expanded book selections. Scan the dvd and audio
book choices. The new hallway location offers SDV residents an
opportunity to borrow a book or dvd anytime the lodge is open.
Do you have a little free time to help maintain the library? The Library
Club is looking for volunteers to spend a few hours every couple of
months placing returned books on the shelves and keeping our shiny, new
shelves neat. Volunteers get first chance to see the latest books and media.
Join your fellow SDV residents in making the Solera Diamond Valley
Library a special place.

We are a newly formed interest group seeking club status.
The club will be made up of veterans and non-veterans who
wish to show our appreciation and thanks for our military and

We will be operating 2 to 3 “fun” fund raising events
yearly to promote funds for donation to deserving
military/veteran and some non-military organizations. We will
also plan 2 to 3 social and entertaining events for members
only. Great camaraderie and satisfaction in helping others.

OLD DAYS OF HEMET
Safeway Stores was the first nationally
known store to locate in Hemet. It first opened in
1927, and then moved to a second location before
moving to its third location shown in the photo. It
moved once again when Safeway sold this
location on Carmalita Street to the Hemet News.
First Methodist Church started construction
in 1918 on the southwest corner of Buena Vista St
and Florida Ave. It was used through the early
60’s and demolished in late 60’s to make way for
Hemet Federal S & L, which is now used as
Hemet City Hall.
Council in 1910 bought out his partner,
Wooley. The shop was located between Harvard St
and Carmalita St at what would become the
middle of the parking lot for Sail Drug.
In 1890 William McCool signed a contract
with William F. Whittier and Edward L. Mayberry
to build a flour mill and manager's house, the
Hemet Land Company would provide 17 lots
adjacent to the railroad on Latham Avenue for
what became San Jacinto Valley Flouring Mill.
This photo was taken in 1897 shortly after
Whittier purchased it from State of California for
$4,000 in taxes owed and it continued operation
until severely damaged in the 1918 quake and
torn down. For a period of time it also provided
electricity for street lights and several businesses.
A.T. & Santa Fe Railroad built their depot
originally at Harvard Street & Latham Avenue in
1894, where it remained until a new one was built
in the current location in 1914. This 1910 photo
shows the depot in that original location and the
park next to it.
Robert McKim was born 1886 and came with
his family to the valley 2 years later in 1888. He
was raised and schooled in San Jacinto, leaving
the valley in 1910 and making his way into acting
on stage, vaudeville, and co-starred in 99 silent
era movies, working with some of the biggest
stars in Hollywood like Douglas Fairbanks, John
Gilbert, William S. Hart, Will Rogers ( in
photograph, on left ). McKim appeared in many
top movies of the time, Mark of Zorro, The Strong
Man, Wagon Tracks.
Unfortunately, Robert McKim suffered a
cerebral hemorrhage while onstage in a
production in Salt Lake City in 1927 and he was
immediately returned to Hollywood where he died
a few days later at the young age of forty.
J.C. Penney first came to Hemet in 1929 and
occupied a storefront on the south side of Florida
Avenue between Carmalita and Juanita Streets. In
1939 the store was moved a short distance when
the lower floor of the Brudin Building was leased
on the southeast corner of Florida Avenue and
Carmalita Street.
