BOXING DAY 2014
By Barbara Watson
Many people begin their Christmas shopping and creating in July –
“Christmas in July.” There are stores
that dedicate themselves to things
Christmas all year round. The city
and malls are clogged with shoppers
for weeks before Christmas dragging home everything that looks
likely to please someone in the family. “Are you ready for Christmas?”is a
question that is as common as the
greeting “Hello.” There are many
who are so organized and have
every gift wrapped and stored in a
special closet. Others fret and frown
as they use every last minute to find
something to give to a spouse, a
child, a friend, or a parent.
That ends on Christmas day. The
culmination of all the rush of adrenaline focused on that one morning is
a few hours of no chance to buy anything more. People come to terms
with so many things. One grandmother realizes that her gift was not
better than that of the other grandmother. One child is in ecstasy with
his new toy, while another howls
because the four items she received
did not include the three she wanted. It’s not easy being a child or a
parent at Christmas. Many can’t wait
for the holidays to be over and for
life to settle down to normal again.
Still there is one more day that
allows people to exercise their need
or greed. Boxing day was once a
time to give a box of gifts and left
over Christmas food to the servants,
or earlier yet to give alms to the
poor. There are at least two ways of
looking at this statutory holiday. If
you have a teenager in the family it
Notice the one little guy not too happy with anything?
might be a day when that young
person has made a pact with other
teenagers to buy as much new stuff
as their money allows. They might
go a little overboard and perhaps
buy items that they may not even
want and that they certainly do not
need. But, it is probably the joy of
the hunt, an instinct to gather provisions, to have supplies in case of
famine, to be ready if the sky should
fall. It really is a primitive exercise.
Another way of looking at Boxing Day 2014 is as a chance for stores
to make sales to warrant their
remaining open for another year.
That way they can continue to pay
taxes and also to employ a workforce that also pays taxes. There is no
better reason to go shopping than
doing one’s part to keep the economy going. Is this a weak rationalization or is there any merit in that
argument?
We’ve seen stores set sail here
and then go under in our city. If busi-
ness is good they stay afloat, if not,
they sink. Some are like the Titanic.
They take many people down with
them.
People who prepared for Christmas this year might not have been
able to find what they wanted in our
stores. The traditional Christmas
sweater that women knit for their
husbands or for their children was
limited to wool sold in one or two
non-specializing stores here. The
yarn types were limited but so were
the skeins in one dye lot limited. The
specialty stores we once had, closed
down. The sweater a woman now
knits is probably made of inferior
yarn, if there happened to be
enough for size large. It might look
good in its first wearing, but the first
wash might shrink or stretch it so
that it cannot be worn again. The
love that went into knitting it has
been washed away.

Granite Countertops are a Timeless Addition to Kitchens
Granite countertops are like diamonds to a kitchen.
These timeless kitchen embellishments add a classic finish to home kitchens. They provide a sophisticated

Beyond marketability and beauty, these countertops

time, have high durability. All these benefits help
explain why stone countertops are some of the
most popular preferences for home owners.
Granite slabs undergo an intricate and
lengthy process before they transform into shiny
granite countertops. Granite has to be extracted
from the earth, transported half way across the
world. Granite is an igneow rock, taking millions
of years to create its distinctive beauty.
Real estate developers and home sellers look
at granite finishing as an investment. They add to
the value, and hence the marketability, of homes.
Granite countertops can last for many lifetimes
and still maintain their luxurious shine. Available
in many decorative styles, these countertops put
more value and beauty into homes.
Granite surfaces for kitchens are a wise
investment.

BOXING DAY 2015
Continued from f ront page
There is a silly but compelling television series called
“Hart of Dixie.”The central character is Dr. Zoe Hart. The series is
American but reminiscent of
our Canadian “Corner Gas.” The
little town of Bluebell seems to
celebrate every day. Each resident participates and each resident is treated as valuable in
some way. The plot is often simple, the acting exaggerated, and
the characters stereotypical,
but it’s enjoyable.
So how does this relate to
Boxing Day 2014? It’s quite simple, really. There is a certain
pleasure in the story, which I
have not yet figured out intellectually, if I ever will, but find
the need to try. The pleasure of
consumerism of Boxing Day
may be considered just as simple, but the intellectual argument above is valid in maintaining that our small city
needs a tax base that the stores
catering to eager buyers provide.
Business
Directory
The fictional, little town of
Bluebell honours celebrations
of all kind. Celebrating leads to
joy and pleasure that are elements of life certainly worth
triggering. Yes, Boxing Day can
be a little wild, and perhaps
encourage “needless” expenditures. That word “needless,”
however, might have to be
reconsidered using new intellectual tools, rather than common prejudice.

Common Automotive Myths Debunked
Myth #1: The windshield is for comfort not safety.
Fact: They weren’t just made to keep you dry from
the rain; windshields are part of your vehicle’s safety
restraint system, meaning that a cracked or damaged
windshield can decrease the overall effectiveness of
airbags, seatbelts, roof stability, and your personal safety in the event of an accident.
Myth #2: Your engine should be warmed up by idling
before driving.
Fact: It’s important for your engine to be warmed
up, but not by idling. Even in cold weather, the best way
to warm up a vehicle’s engine is to drive away. With
today’s modern engines, you should only need 30 seconds of idling, assuming that your windows are clear.
Myth #3: Suspension isn’t important to your car’s safety.
Fact:
Together, the steering and suspension system are
key to your car’s handling and overall safety. AIA recommends having your vehicle’s steering and suspension
systems checked at least once a year and usually with a
wheel alignment. It may be time to have your steering
and suspension inspected if your vehicle experiences
one of these symptoms: pulling, uneven tire wear, noise
and vibration while cornering, or a loss of control.
Myth #4: Shutting off and restarting your engine uses
more gas than if you let it idle.
Fact: Contrary to popular belief, restarting your
engine does not burn more fuel than idling. In fact, 10
seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting your
engine. If you are parked and are going to be idling for
more than 10 seconds, save fuel by turning off your
vehicle.

Tips for a successful,
stress-free holiday travel season
(MS) Many of people
fly the friendly skies, ride
the rails or hit the highway
come the holiday season. Such travel can be
both expensive and
stressful. But holiday
travel need not be so
costly or tense. The following are a handful
of tips to help travelers enjoy successful
and stress-free travel
this holiday season.
• Reserve early.
Fares only rise as the
holidays draw closer. It's
unlikely you will score a
last-minute deal by waiting until the last minute to
book holiday travel, as discount fares are largely a
thing of past. If your travel
schedule is inflexible, book
as early as possible. You
might be able to save
some money if you have
some flexibility with
regard to your travel
schedule.
• Fly on the holiday.
Very often flying on popular holidays, including
Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, is less expensive
than flying on the surrounding days. If your goal
is to save money and you
don't mind showing up on
the holiday itself, then flying on the holiday may
earn you the most savings.
• Book a business
hotel. Hotels that cater to
business clientele in big
cities often reduce their
rates during the holidays,
when business travel tends
to wane.
• Consider flying into
and out of smaller airports. What they lack in
size, number of flights and
modern comforts, smaller
airports can make up for in
fewer delays and smaller
crowds. Flying into and out
of a smaller airport may be
especially advantageous if
such an airport is closer to
your home or final destination.
• Do not wrap gifts
prior to traveling. If you
must bring gifts along,
careers
your move through security will likely be quicker if
those gifts are not
wrapped. Unwrapped
gifts save officers the
time of removing
wrapping paper to
inspect what's inside,
so reserve the wrapping for when you
arrive at your destination.
• Have an alternate plan in place.
Unforeseeable delays
or cancellations can
turn even the most carefully planned itinerary on its
head. Keep phone numbers for taxi services and
hotels handy just in case
your flight is delayed and
you do not want to spend
a night at the airport.
• Avoid domestic or
popular holiday destinations. One way to avoid
the holiday crowds is to
head off for parts of the
world that are not celebrating the same holiday
as you. Such locales likely
won't attract as many
tourists as other parts of
the world, and you might
be able to save money by
visiting during the offseason.
