Cops cleared in
killing of FSU
gunman
A grand jury is clearing five police officers involved in the shooting
of a gunman on the campus of Florida
State University.
Myron May was shot and killed
by police in the early morning hours
of Nov. 20. Before the 31-year-old
was killed, May shot at students and
one library employee.
Three bullets struck 21-year-old
student Farhan “Ronny” Ahmed, including a shot that left him paralyzed
from the waist down.
A Leon County grand jury on Tuesday heard from witnesses and went
over physical evidence collected at
Strozier Library.
In a brief four-page report, jurors
called the actions of police “heroic,”
and they praised the “prompt response” of a dispatcher. The report
states there could have been more
casualties if police had not acted so
quickly.
Scott blasts
Obama over
Cuba moves
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is sharply
criticizing President Barack Obama
over his plans to normalize relations
with Cuba.
Scott put out a statement on
Wednesday that says he continues to
support sanctions and the existing
embargo against the island nation “as
long as Cuba chooses dictatorship
over democracy.”
“President Obama is giving into a
tyrannical government that does not
value human rights and completely
disregards the people of Cuba who
are fighting for democracy,” Scott
said.
Scott also called it “unconscionable” for the president to agree to
release three Cubans jailed in the
United States as part of an agreement
to release American Alan Gross.
Gross was arrested in 2009 while
working in the Communist-run country to set up Internet access for the
island’s small Jewish community.
Donor drops
$10,000 in
Red Kettles
Someone filled the Salvation
Army’s Red Kettles with nearly
$10,000 in crisp $100 bills folded in
the exact same way.
The donation came Tuesday and
was spread among the kettles from
Viera to Cocoa Beach.
Salvation Army officials believe
the money came from a single source.
The amounts ranged from $500 to
$1,000 per kettle.
The donations generated a lot of
excitement for bell ringers, who typically see smaller denominations.
The Salvation Army’s Capt. Angel Calderon says the money will go
a long way in helping local families
during the holidays.
Florida’s jobless
rate drops
in November
Florida’s unemployment rate is
dropping again.
New jobless numbers released Friday showed that the state’s unemployment rate for November is 5.8
percent.
That’s a drop of 0.2 percent from
October. Florida’s rate now matches
the national unemployment rate.
Florida’s drop was aided by the
addition of nearly 42,000 jobs last
month. Florida only trailed California in the number of jobs added in
November.
Gov. Rick Scott announced the
new job numbers during a visit to
Viewpost, a financial services company that plans to add nearly 300
jobs to its offices in in Maitland.
Scott policies have helped propel
the state’s economy.

Broward Judge
guilty of DUI
The verdict is in for a Broward judge
on trial.
On Friday afternoon, the jury found
Broward Judge Cynthia Imperato guilty
of driving under the influence and reckless driving. Judge Imperato gave no
reaction when the jury’s verdict was
read.
Following her conviction, she was
sentenced to 20 days on house arrest and
12 months on probation.
Prosecutors wanted Judge Imperato
to serve 30 days in jail but the judge
decided on house arrest.
The state asked for Imperato to pay a
$2,000 fine and have her drivers’ license
revoked.
Prosecutors said Imperato deserved a
serious punishment.
“She endangered three people that
night. We don’t know how many people
were in those cars. Testimony came out
that she nearly sideswiped two cars on
two separate occasion and those cars
luckily enough were able to have the
reflexes or the wherewithal to avoid that
type of circumstance,” said Prosecutor
Richard Clausi.
The jury reconvened Friday after
members left the courtroom late Thursday evening.
Imperato was arrested by Boca Raton
Police for a DUI in November 2013.
When Judge Imperato was pulled
over, she initially refused to get out of
the car.
“I’ve asked you nicely several times,
to step out of the car,” the officer was
heard saying on video of the arrest shown
to the court.
“I’m trying to call my lawyer,” she
explained to the officer. “I’m going to sit
Judge Cynthia Imperato
in my car until I get my lawyer.”
Prosecutors showed jurors the video
of her arrest and the refusal to do a
breath test. The prosecutors said she
would not take the test because they are
certain she would have failed.
Imperato was stopped after another
driver called 911, saying they saw an
erratic driver go by. Initially, the caller
thought it was a man behind the wheel.
“He’s all over the road!” the caller
said. “He nearly sideswiped me twice.
He’s got to be drunk.”
In opening statements on Wednesday, prosecutor Ari Goldberg explained
Imperato was at a function with lawyers
and judges and there was an open bar.
Goldberg said the judge admitted to
the officer who stopped her that she had
been drinking. He also said the officer
noticed glassy eyes and the smell of
alcohol on her breath.
“She knew this whole time, as soon
as those lights came on that she was in
trouble. She knew she was impaired.
She’s the only one who could know it
100%,” said Prosecutor Richard Clausi.
Imperato’s attorney said the person
who called 911 had no idea who was in
the car and no idea what was going on
inside. Collet suggested maybe she was
sending a text message or trying to find
an address on her phone GPS.
Imperato’s attorney’s said that there
was no solid evidence that Imperato was
drunk behind the wheel.
“This lady was able to walk, able to
talk, able to give her address, able to
speak. Do you believe she was falling
down drunk? Intoxicated? Wobbly?”
said Marc Shiner, Imperato’s attorney.
A witness and a police officer testified she was swerving all over the road
— endangering other drivers.
“The Mercedes drifted into their lane
quite far and both drivers, I heard them
blow their horns,” said witness William
Barthelme.
Defense attorneys said the case was
filled with holes.
“There’s a lack of evidence in this
case all day long. Ten thousand reasonable doubts,” said Shiner.
What happens now for Judge
Imperato?
The Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC) which is the state agency that
investigates judges said their cases are
confidential but in a case like this one,
the JQC would investigate, hold a hearing and make a recommendation on punishment to the Florida Supreme Court.
The Florida Supreme Court would
make the final decision on whether a
judge convicted of DUI would be reprimanded or potentially removed from
the bench.
Marathon bombing suspect appears
in court for 1st time since 2013
Boston Marathon bombing suspect
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev returned to court
Thursday for the first time since he
was arraigned in July 2013, and he
received a shout of encouragement
from the mother-in-law of a man who
was shot and killed while being questioned by law enforcement after the
bombings.
Security was tight at the federal
courthouse in Boston or Tsarnaev’s
final pretrial conference. Tensions ran
high, and one bombing victim had a
testy exchange with protesters outside.
During the brief court hearing, U.S.
District Court George O’Toole Jr. made
no rulings, saying he would rule in
writing on pending motions, including the defense’s latest push to move
the trial out of Boston.
David Bruck, one of Tsarnaev’s lawyers, told the judge that the defense
plans to file a motion to delay the trial,
which is now scheduled to begin on
Jan. 5 with jury selection. Bruck did
not say how long of a delay the defense will seek.
At one point, the mother-in-law of
Ibragim Todashev called out to
Tsarnaev never flinched or acknowledged the shouts.
Three people were killed and more
than 260 were injured when two bombs
exploded near the finish line of the
April 2013 marathon. Tsarnaev, who
has pleaded not guilty to 30 federal
charges, faces the possibility of the
death penalty if he is convicted.

Elena Teyer said she told him: “We
pray for you. Be strong, my son. We
know you are innocent.”
Later, in English, she yelled to the
law enforcement officers escorting her
out of the room: “Stop killing innocent people. Stop killing innocent
boys.”
"I wasn’t sure it I had lost
complete faith in humanity
but the Tsarnaev supporters
at court yesterday really
confirmed that for me."

Pompano
Pioneers
by Bud Garner
West of Pompano, highway 441 and South of
the Wiles road, there lies a huge expanse of swampland that was covered with from 6 to 12 inches of
water at most any given time. Portions of this land
was owned by The Blount family, the Remsberg
family and by H.L. (Bud) Lyons.
This land had access from Wiles road on the East
side and from the Everglades South of the Hillsboro
canal.
There was a sizable herd of game, deer, hogs and
turkeys in this area and it was open to hunting
except the part that was posted and it was well
marked and in some instances, fenced.
I first encountered RD ( Plumber) Smith in
these swamps one day while slogging through the
mud and water on foot while hunting in this area.
First, R.D. was a neighbor of mine and he was
also a businessman in Pompano and he loved the
outdoors and hunting, He would drive his four
wheel vehicle all the way to Alaska over the Alcan
highway every few years to hunt and fish, carrying
along a freezer and portable generator to keep the
meat frozen as he drove the thousands of miles
back to Pompano.
R.D, pulled up to me and we exchanged pleasantries, He knew me and I him, he asked if I had a
vehicle some place and I answered ”no”, I parked
on the Wiles road and I was on foot as I had done
many times while hunting in this area. Our conversation turned to hunting and where was a good
place to find deer and I remarked that I was on my

The first formal divorce for a gay couple in
Florida history has been granted by a Broward
County judge who also declared the state’s ban on
same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
Circuit Judge Dale Cohen on Wednesday dissolved the marriage of Heather Brassner and Megan
Lade.
They were united in a 2002 civil union in Vermont.
Cohen had ruled in August that Florida’s gay
marriage ban is unconstitutional and that out-ofstate gay marriages should be recognized.
Brassner attorney Nancy Brodzki said it was
Florida’s first-ever gay divorce.
Brodzki says she expects Attorney General Pam
Bondi to appeal the decision, just as she has several
other rulings against the gay marriage ban.
There was no immediate reaction from Bondi’s
office Wednesday.
The ban was enshrined in the state constitution
by voters in 2008.

School board crook
gets probation
Stephanie Kraft
Mitch Kraft
Judge protects Democrat insiders
A former Broward County school
board member convicted of official
misconduct won't be serving any
prison time.
Stephanie Kraft was sentenced to
five years of probation Friday. She
walked out of the courtroom still wearing her brown jail jumpsuit amid applause and hugs from Democrat supporters.
Judge Matthrew Destry remanded
Kraft into custody after she was found
guilty last week and denied her bond
while she awaited sentencing, despite
the efforts of her attorney.
Kraf allegedly used the power of
her elected office to help father-son
developers Bruce and Shawn Chait
get a $500,000 break on school board
fees in exchange for $10,000 paid to
her husband Mitch Kraft, who also
faces charges and is expected to go to
trial early next year.
"This is very humbling," Stephanie
Kraft said as she walked away.
Kraft could have her criminal record
cleared if she abides by the terms of
her probation, which includes 20 hours
of community service.
"She can vote. She can own a firearm," her attorney said. "She has no
restrictions as far as that's concerned
once she's off probation."
Allen West making final
Florida appearance
Tea party hero Allen West is making his final Florida appearance before moving to Texas.
The one-term congressman is appearing at a holiday party for his selfnamed foundation Saturday in Palm
Beach Gardens.
He announced last month he will
become CEO of the Dallas-based National Center for Policy Analysis in
January.
West lost his bid for a second term
in Congress two years ago after a close
race with Democrat Patrick Murphy
that resulted in court fights and recounts.
He is well-known nationally among
conservative Republicans, some of
whom have lobbied for him to run for
president. He was a career Army officer until firing a gun near an Iraqi
prisoner’s head and threatening to kill
Colonel Allen West
him, an incident that resulted in him
being relieved of his command.
Hunting in the Everglades
way out and was through hunting for the day, He
said, “get on my buggy and I will take you to your
car”.
On the way to my car he asked if I came here
very often and replied not to often as it was hard
hunting, slogging through the mud and water and
there were lots of water moccasins and one had to
watch where every step was made.
He said that he usually had someone go with him
because he didn’t like hunting alone, he had dogs
business acumen to set himself up in business and
been very successful.
The next Saturday morning at 4 AM I walked the
three blocks from my house to his and he was ready
to go, There was two other people going also, One
was W.R. ( Dub) Henderson and my childhood
friend, Robert Mitchell.
The dogs were in a cage in the back of the buggy,
Dub was going to transport the buggy on a trailer to
the hunting area (the tower on the buggy had hinges
but without someone with him, he left them home.
That brought up his next question, would I care
to go with him on his buggy and his dogs sometimes, I readily agreed to that and he proposed that
we meet at his house the next Saturday about 4 AM
and we would return with his dogs and hunt.
RD was in the appliance, plumbing and heating
business. He also had a farming operation in Palm
Beach County. During WW II, he had the plumbing
and heating building contracts for the USAAF
training airfield at Boca Raton. So RD had the
means to be as independent as he wanted to be and
he enjoyed the outdoors.
RD had arrived in South Florida sometime in the
late 1920s from North Carolina and had enough
so it could be folded over to reduce the height for
transporting.)
RD loaded the guns and other equipment in his
pickup truck and he would drive it out to the edge
of the hunt area and leave it there. Robert and I rode
in the cab with him because it was in November and
was quite chilly.
Arriving at the place we would board the buggy,
we off loaded our equipment placing the guns up on
the tower that was constructed on top of the buggy
(a WW II Jeep) there was room for three people in
the tower and there a was a large tractor inner tube
that was placed around the inside of the cage of the
elevated platform as a hedge against injury while
being bounced around going through the swamps.
RD had installed huge aircraft tires on the jeep
so it could travel through the mud and water, as
long as the water was not more than three feet deep,
we were not liable to drown out the Jeep.
We set out to the West in the buggy just as dawn
was breaking and that is the best part of the day for
me when going hunting, the swamps and hammocks started to come alive, the huge long billed
cranes and pond birds were rising off their roost
and heading out for their daily food hunts. The
birds were calling to each other and there was a
myriad of noise and sounds as the swamps came
alive and the wild things were lustly broadcasting
their arrival of a new day to the world.
We were now deep enough into the swamps to
turn the dogs loose, RD said we could let them
loose and follow until they struck a trail or we could
keep them locked up and drive around until maybe
we spotted a deer then we would release them. We
opted to release the dogs and follow them because
they could possibly jump a deer that was lying
down or hiding.
We unlimbered our guns, Dub would drive and
we would be his eyes because the grass was higher
than his windshield in places and we could see
much further and would relay our course and any
obstacles to him. I had brought along a Japanese
1938 model rifle cal .25 that I had brought home
from Japan after the war when I was in the US Navy
and I had obtained sporting ammunition for it and
had bore sighted it so that is was accurate up to a
distance of 300 yards, RD was using a .44 cal
semiautomatic Remington and Robert was using a
Winchester 30-30 cal, lever action rifle. Dub had a
shotgun but he probably would not be in on any
deer shooting from the drivers seat.

The number of top rated high
schools in Florida is dropping.
Grades released Thursday by the
Florida Department of Education
showed that the number of A-graded
schools dropped from 49 percent last
year to 36 percent this year.
The number of schools given a B
did edge up slightly from 33 percent to
35 percent.
Education Commissioner Pam
Stewart said a key reason for the drop
in A-rated schools was that the grading formula was changed to make it
harder to earn a top grade.
Elementary and middle school
grades were announced last summer.
The department tried to downplay
the drop in the number of A-rated
schools in its official release. Instead
the department highlighted that the
state’s overall high school graduation
rate edged up slightly this year.

Proteins drive cancer
to change states
A new study from MIT implicates a
family of RNA-binding proteins in
the regulation of cancer, particularly
in a subtype of breast cancer. These
proteins, known as Musashi proteins,
can force cells into a state associated
with increased proliferation.
Biologists have previously found
that this kind of transformation, which
often occurs in cancer cells as well as
during embryonic development, is
controlled by transcription factors —
proteins that turn genes on and off.
However, the new MIT research reveals that RNA-binding proteins also
play an important role. Human cells
have about 500 different RNA-binding proteins, which influence gene expression by regulating messenger
RNA, the molecule that carries DNA’s
instructions to the rest of the cell.
When the researchers knocked
down Musashi proteins in breast cancer cells grown in the lab, the cells
were forced out of the epithelial state.
Also, if the proteins were artificially
boosted in mesenchymal cells, the cells
transitioned to an epithelial state. This
suggests that Musashi proteins are responsible for maintaining cancer cells
in a proliferative, epithelial state.
“These proteins seem to really be
regulating this cell-state transition,
which we know from other studies is
very important, especially in breast
cancer,” Katz says.
The researchers found that Musashi
proteins repress a gene called Jagged1,
which in turn regulates the Notch signaling pathway. Notch signaling promotes cell division in neurons during
embryonic development and also plays
a major role in cancer.
When Jagged1 is repressed, cells
are locked in an epithelial state and are
much less motile. The researchers
found that Musashi proteins also repress Jagged1 during normal mammary-gland development, not just in
cancer. When these proteins were
overexpressed in normal mammary
glands, cells were less able to undergo
the type of healthy EMT required for
mammary tissue development.
Brenton Graveley, a professor of
genetics and developmental biology
at the University of Connecticut, says
he was surprised to see how much
influence Musashi proteins can have
by controlling a relatively small number of genes in a cell.
“Musashi proteins have been known
to be interesting for many years, but
until now nobody has really figured
out exactly what they’re doing, especially on a genome-wide scale,” he
says.
The researchers are now trying to
figure out how Musashi proteins,
which are normally turned off after
embryonic development, get turned
back on in cancer cells. “We’ve studied what this protein does, but we
know very little about how it’s regulated,” Katz says.
He says it is too early to know if the
Musashi proteins might make good
targets for cancer drugs, but they could
make a good diagnostic marker for
what state a cancer cell is in. “It’s
more about understanding the cell
states of cancer at this stage, and diagnosing them, rather than treating
them,” he says.
Lifespan variability
between races explained
Eliminating health disparities between races is a goal of many groups
and organizations, but a team of sociologists suggests that finding the reasons for the differences in the timing
of black and white deaths may be
trickier than once thought.
Life expectancies
for black people are
shorter and more uncertain, on average,
than to those of whites,
according to Glenn
Firebaugh, Roy C.
Buck Professor of
American Institutions
and professor of sociology and demography, Penn State. A
higher lifespan variability -- the variability in the ages at
which people die -- among blacks is
usually explained by higher rates of
certain causes of death, such as murder, which are more common among
the young. However, the researchers
found that higher rates of other causes
of white deaths among the young appear to offset this.
"We initially suspected that the
greater variance in lifespan for blacks
would be a result of differences in the
causes of death, for instance, the higher
homicide rates among blacks," said
Glenn Firebaugh.
"But, as we looked closer, we saw
that suicides and deaths due to drug
poisoning -- deaths that are more common among whites -- offset the higher
homicide rates for blacks."
Black homicide rates account for
about 38 percent of the greater variance for blacks.
However, the higher rates of white
suicide and death due to drug overdose nearly cancels out the homicide
effect, Firebaugh said.
Taken all together, differences in
causes of death account for only about
13 percent of the difference in lifespan
variability between blacks and whites,
according to the researchers.
"If you could magically change
everything and make it so blacks and
whites died of exactly the same causes,
that would have surprisingly little effect on the difference in lifespan variability," said Firebaugh. "About 87
percent of the overall difference would
persist."
In addition to behavioral reasons
for lifespan uncertainty, researchers
have also theorized that differences in
medical treatment of and health prevention strategies for black and white
patients may explain some of the difference in the variability of lifespan.
The researchers suggest that inter-
ventions to reduce this disparity may
be more effective if they target sex, as
well as race.
"With regard to policy, our results
indicate the importance of sex-specific intervention to reduce racial disparities," the researchers
said. "In the case of HIV/
AIDS, for example, there
is greater potential for significant reduction of the racial gap when men are targeted.
The opposite is true for
heart disease and diabetes,
where interventions focused on women are more
likely to narrow the gap."
Focusing on preventing
specific causes of death,
such as homicide and HIV/AIDS
deaths, would help significantly cut
the disparity. Eliminating the difference in deaths due to those two causes
would cut the black-white disparity in
lifespan variance by half, the researchers said.
Lifespan uncertainty is important
because it may have a ripple effect for
people and society, according to
Firebaugh.
"This isn't part of the study, of
course, but the uncertainty in lifespan
could lead to uncertainty about the
future," said Firebaugh. "One could
imagine, for instance, that a consequence of people facing more uncertain lifespans would be that they
change the way they plan, or don't
plan, for health or education, for example, or for investing in retirement."
Social media could lead to more HIV testing
UCLA research suggests a valuable tool in the fight against the virus
that causes AIDS
Social media such as Twitter and
Facebook can be valuable in the fight
against HIV in the United States, where
research has demonstrated they can
prompt high-risk populations to request at-home testing kits for the virus
that causes AIDS, suggesting a way to
potentially boost testing rates.
But does it lead to actual testing,
and can it work outside the United
States? A new study from the UCLA
Center for Digital Behavior suggests
that it can. The study, conducted in
Peru among men who have sex with
men, found that participants in the
intervention arm of a randomized controlled clinical trial were more than
twice as likely to be tested for HIV
than those who joined a social media
group and were provided with traditional HIV prevention services.
The intervention, called Harnessing Online Peer Education (HOPE),
combines social media with behavioral psychology to encourage people
in high-risk populations to get tested,
said Sean Young, assistant professor
of family medicine at the David Geffen
School of Medicine at UCLA and executive director of the UCLA Center
for Digital Behavior.
“This shows that it’s not just social
media that got people to test, but the
HOPE social media interventions and
the psychological ingredients it used
for changing behavior,” said Young,
who is also a member of the UCLA
AIDS Institute and Center for AIDS
Research. “In other words, if you’re a
public health organization or worker,
don’t just think that throwing something on Facebook or Twitter will be
the solution and change people’s be-
haviors. Social media may be helpful,
but the HOPE intervention was significantly more likely to change HIV
testing behavior compared to traditional care through social media.”
Though there have been many experimental HIV testing interventions
in international settings, none have
used social media technologies, said
Young, who is also a member of the
UCLA AIDS Institute and Center for
AIDS Research, the Center for HIV
Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services and the UCLA Center
for Addiction and Behavioral Medicine. This study was conducted in
greater Lima, which reflects the lowand middle-income countries where
low-cost interventions such as HOPE
could help stem the spread of AIDS.
Previous research by Young and
colleagues demonstrated that the
HOPE intervention increased participants’ requests for testing, but was too
small to determine the rates of actual
testing. “That pilot study was a good
enough start showing the potential of
using the HOPE intervention to change
testing behavior,” he said.
This study builds on the prior research by increasing the number of
participants by about five times —
556 participants compared to 112 —
and it was designed with a verifiable
and observable endpoint allowing the
researchers to gauge the rates at which
participants followed through with
requests for kits and got tested.
The 556 Peruvian men who have
sex with men were randomly assigned
to join control groups or private intervention on Facebook for 12 weeks,
with 278 assigned to each group. The
control group received an enhanced
standard of care, which included standard offline HIV prevention and test-
ing services offered by local clinics
and organizations and participation in
Facebook groups that provided study
updates and HIV testing information.
The intervention group, by contrast,
received the enhanced standard of care
and also incorporated the HOPE intervention behavior change model, which
utilized peer leaders who sent messages, chats and wall posts and engaged the participants in general
friendly conversation. The peer leaders also communicated information
about HIV prevention and testing to
the participants.
Of the 278 participants in each
group, 26 from the intervention group
did not complete the follow-up survey
and 32 were lost to follow-up on the
control side. Of the 252 from the
intervention group who provided complete data, 43 (17 percent) went on to
take an HIV test, compared with 16 (7
percent) of the controls. In the study,
seven participants who tested positive
were linked to care at a local clinic.
Though this research provides evidence that the HOPE intervention can
increase HIV testing in low- and
middle-income countries, other settings are different from Peru, so the
researchers can’t say for certain if these
findings are applicable to other countries.
This study, however, suggests that
the HOPE intervention and new technologies can be a low-cost solution
for populations at risk for HIV in Peru
and other similar low- and middleincome country settings, Young said.
“This could set the stage for important future work on being able to use
these methods to treat people who have
HIV, which is a tremendous issue in
settings like sub-Saharan Africa,”
Young added.
Experts predict food trends for 2015
For the second year, University of

Besides being fun to eat, such foods

Understanding infant
sleep patterns
Most parents are not surprised by
the irregularity of a newborn infant's
sleep patterns, but by six months or so
many parents wonder if something is
wrong with their baby or their sleeping arrangements if the baby is not
sleeping through the night. Healthcare
providers, specifically nurse practitioners, can help parents understand
what "normal" sleep patterns are for
their child, according to researchers.
"Nurse practitioners are at the frontline of healthcare," said Robin Yaure,
senior instructor of human development and family studies, Penn State
Mont Alto. "They are in an ideal position to help parents understand infant
sleep pattern norms. Thus, nurse practitioners can help parents understand
that 'sleeping through the night' is not
entirely likely in young infants and
that infants' sleep patterns change during the first few years of life."
According to the researchers, there
are four common areas of concern for
both parents and practitioners: what
constitutes "normal" infant sleep and
waking patterns, whether night
wakings are a problem or not, whether
a parent's presence is disruptive while
an infant is falling asleep, and whether
sleep training is safe and healthy for
infants. Sleep training is one way to
establish a sleep routine for a child,
although the methods used may not be
appealing to parents or in the best
interests of the child, the researchers
said.
Yaure and colleagues reviewed current research on infant sleep, focusing
on the above four areas of concern,
and specifically on infant safety and
the well being of both infant and
mother during nighttime care. Based
on what they found, the researchers
suggest ways to integrate parental preferences and best practice information,
and include conversation points for
nurse practitioners in an article recently published online in the Journal

of the American Association of Nurse
Practitioners.
Infants' sleep patterns vary for at
least the first three years of life. There
are many reasons for this, including
changes in infant health and mobility
and the development of separation
anxiety.
"Sharing this basic information with
parents is one way of assuring parents
that infants' waking does not necessarily mean that the parents are doing
something wrong," the researchers
wrote.
Parental presence at bedtime, sleep
training and infant self-settling are
frequently debated topics about which
parents might look to healthcare professionals for advice. Yaure and colleagues again point to the importance
of sharing new information -- for example, recent research suggests that
the presence of parents at bedtime,
specifically during the transition to
sleep, may not trigger night wakings
as had been previously thought.
Other recent findings show that
nonresponsiveness of mothers during
nighttime care sometimes in sleep
training, can raise stress for both mom
and baby. Elevated stress increases
cortisol in the body, which may hurt
the baby in the long run since increased cortisol levels are associated
with depression, aggression and attention problems, among other issues,
in children and adults.
"I worry about parents who feel
like they can't trust their own instincts,"
said Yaure. "Different parents have
different goals and ideas for parenting,
and we want parents to figure out how
to incorporate best practices into their
belief system. We have to be culturally aware and sensitive to different
families and beliefs."
By encouraging nurse practitioners
to talk about current knowledge on
infant nightwakings and parental presence, among other things, Yaure hopes
that parents will become more comfortable and confident with their nighttime care choices.
Cake or Carrots?
Timing decides what you'll nosh on
When you open the refrigerator for
a late-night snack, are you more likely
to grab a slice of chocolate cake or a
bag of carrot sticks? Your ability to
exercise self-control—i.e., to settle for
the carrots—may depend upon just
how quickly your brain
factors healthfulness
into a decision, according to a recent study by
Caltech neuro economists.
"In typical food
choices, individuals
need to consider attributes like health and
taste in their decisions,"
says graduate student
Nicolette Sullivan, lead
author of the study.
"What we wanted to
find out was at what
point the taste of the
foods starts to become
integrated into the choice process, and
at what point health is integrated."
Since taste is a concrete, innate attribute—after all, people know what
foods they like and do not like—the
researchers hypothesized that it becomes factored into the food decisionmaking process first. A food's affect
on health, on the other hand, is a more
abstract attribute—one that you often
need to learn about or do research on.
In fact, there are such widely varying
opinions about the healthfulness of
nutrients like fats, calories, and carbs
that you may not even be able to find
a definitive answer. Therefore, the researchers assumed, the healthiness of
a food likely is not factored into a
person's food choice until after taste
is. And for those individuals who exercised less self-control, they hypothesized, health would factor into the
choice even later.
To test these ideas, Sullivan—along
with her colleagues in the laboratory
of Antonio Rangel, Bing Professor of
Neuroscience, Behavioral Biology,
and Economics, including Rangel himself—developed a new experimental
technique that allowed them to evaluate, on a scale of milliseconds, when
taste and health information kick in
during the process of making a decision. They did this by tracking the
movement of a computer mouse as a
person makes a choice.
In the experiment, 28 hungry subjects—Caltech student-volunteers who
had been fasting for four hours—were
asked to rate 160 foods individually
on a scale from –2 to 2, based on that
food's healthfulness, its tastiness, and
how much the subject would like to
eat that food after the experiment was
over. The subjects were then presented
with 280 random pairings of those
same foods and were asked to use a
computer mouse to click on—to
choose—which food they preferred
from each pairing.
The researchers then used statistical tools to analyze each subject's cursor movements and, therefore, the
choice process. They looked at how
fast taste began to drive the mouse's
movement—and how soon health did.
For example, one subject's cursor trajectory might be driven by the taste of
the foods very early in the trial, but
soon after might be driven by health
also—resulting in the selection of the
healthier item, like Brussels sprouts
over pizza. However, another subject's
cursor trajectory might be driven by
taste all the way to the selection of
pizza—with health information coming online too late in the choice process to influence the selection of the
food.
Sullivan and her colleagues found
that, on average, taste information
began to influence the trajectory of
the mouse cursor, and thus the choice
process, almost 200 milliseconds earlier than health information. For 32
percent of subjects, health never influenced their food choice at all; they
made every single choice based on
taste, and their cursor was never driven
by the healthfulness of the items.
"What Nikki has shown is that a big
factor here is how quickly you can
represent and take into account different types of information when you are
making choices," says Rangel. "People
are making these choices very
quickly—in a couple of seconds—so
very small differences, even just a hundred milliseconds, can make an enormous difference in whether or how
much health considerations ultimately
influences the decision."
The researchers then wanted to find
out if some people have an advantage
in exercising self-control simply because they can factor health information into their choice earlier.
On average, the lowself-control group began
to factor in health information 323 milliseconds
later than the high-selfcontrol group. This suggests, says Sullivan, that
the more quickly someone begins to consider a
food's health benefits, the
more likely they are to
exert self-control by ultimately choosing the
healthier food.
In addition, Sullivan
says, it seems that those
who calculate health earlier in the process also weigh it more heavily in
their decision-making process.
These findings, she notes, mean it
might one day be useful to encourage
people to wait a bit longer before making a food choice. "Since we know
that taste appears before health, we
know that it has an advantage in the
ultimate decision. However, once
health comes online, if you wait it
might give health a chance to catch up
and influence the choice," she says.

Time for a Family Meeting to
Discuss Financial Preparations?
During the holiday season, you no doubt have a lot going on in your life —
work functions, gatherings with friends and neighbors, tracking down the
elusive “perfect gift,” etc. But you may find it valuable to add one more event
to your calendar: a family meeting to discuss those financial preparations that
affect you and your loved ones.
Of course, the scope of your meeting will depend on your age and the age of
your children, and on whether you have elderly parents. So, let’s look at one
family meeting scenario that would work under two different sets of circumstances: you are meeting with your own grown children or you are meeting with
your elderly parents.
In either case, you’ll want to review the following areas:
Investment information — It’s a good idea to let your grown children know
where you (and your spouse, if still living) keep your investments and what sort
of investments and retirement accounts you own, such as your IRA, 401(k), and
so on. You should also provide your children with the name of your financial
advisor. And talk to your parents about their investments. You might think that
this could be challenging topic to bring up, but you might be surprised at their
willingness to talk.
Estate planning documents — Comprehensive estate planning can involve a
variety of legal documents, such as a will, a living trust, power of attorney, etc.
If you have already created these documents, you need to share both their
location and their intent with your grown children, who will be active players in
carrying out your estate plans. The same is true with your elderly parents — try
to encourage them to share all their estate-planning documents with you,
especially if they will be counting on you for their care.
Names of professional advisors — As you put together your estate plans, you
will likely need to work with a team of financial, tax and legal advisors. Make
sure your grown children know the names of these professionals and how to
contact them. Similarly, seek the same information from your parents.
Wishes for future living arrangements — It’s certainly possible that you will
be able to live independently your whole life. On the other hand, you may
eventually need some type of long-term care, such as that provided in a nursing
home or an assisted-living residence. Let your children know what your feelings
are about such a possibility, and what preparations you have made. And try to
elicit the same information from your own parents.
Funeral or burial instructions — Admittedly, you can probably find topics
that are more pleasant to discuss than funeral plans. Yet, if you make your own
burial or cremation plans in advance, and possibly even prepay for them, you
will be taking a tremendous burden off the shoulders of your loved ones, who
won’t be forced to make difficult decisions — or scramble for money at short
notice — during a highly emotional time in their lives. Once again, you’ll also
want to learn about your parents’ desires for their final arrangements, and what
steps they may have already taken in this area.
By holding a family meeting about these issues today, you can avoid a lot of
stress and misunderstandings in the future. So bring out the coffee and cookies
— and start talking.

Gas explosions may explain
Bermuda Triangle mystery?
The discovery of several mysterious craters in Siberia earlier this year
launched a wave of speculation about
their origins. Now, a new report suggests an explanation for the holes,
claiming it could also be linked to the
mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle.
However, other scientists not involved in the new report say the weird
sinkhole mechanism likely doesn't
explain vanishings in the Bermuda
Triangle a place that has never been
proIn July, Russian scientists reported
in the journal Nature that the explosive release of gases trapped in the
permafrost — known as methane hydrates likely carved out the enormous
sinkholes. Air near the crater's bottom
contained unusually high concentrations of methane, they said.
But now, researchers have gone
even further, suggesting that methane
hydrates could be responsible for the
disappearances of ships and aircraft
under supposedly mysterious circumstances in the Bermuda Triangle. The
Bermuda Triangle is a region some
people say exists in the North Atlantic
Ocean between Bermuda, Florida and
Puerto Rico; many others dispute its
existence.
But regardless of whether the Bermuda Triangle exists, the idea that
methane release could sink ships holds
some water, scientists say.
"It is very probable that the similar
sinkholes in the ocean were produced
as a result of decomposing gas
hydrates,"said Vladimir Romanovsky,
a geophysicist who studies permafrost
at the University of Alaska Fairbanks,
but who was not involved in the study.
Methane is normally solid under
the crushing pressures of the deep sea,
but chunks of the icelike substance
can break off and form gas bubbles
that rise to the surface.
In fact, a 2003 study published in
the American Journal of Physics found
that such bubbles could indeed sink
ships, at least in principle.
Such large-scale methane releases
have not been reported in recent history, when the ship and airplane disappearances supposedly took place
within the Bermuda Triangle. The last
time the ocean floor was venting gas
in that area was after the last ice age,
about 20,000 years ago, Phrampus
said.
"I personally see it as an interesting
theory and nothing more," he said.
The U.S. Navy does not believe the
Bermuda Triangle exists, and the U.S.
Board on Geographic Names does not
recognize it as an official name.
The rate at which carbon emissions
warmed Earth's climate almost 56 million years ago resembles modern, global warming much more than previously believed but involved two pulses
of carbon to the atmosphere, researchers at the University of Utah, the University of Michigan and three other
universities found.
The findings mean the so-called
Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum,
or PETM, can provide clues to the
future of modern climate change. The
good news: Earth and most species
survived. The bad news: It took millennia to recover from the episode,
when temperatures rose by 9-to-15
degrees Fahrenheit (5-to-8 degrees
Celsius).
"There is a positive note in that the
world persisted, it did not go down in
flames, it has a way of self-correcting
and righting itself," said University of
Utah geochemist Gabe Bowen, lead
author of the study published today in
the journal Nature Geoscience. "However, in this event it took almost
200,000 years before things got back
to normal."
U-M's Philip Gingerich is a coauthor of the paper and a principal
investigator of the National Science
Foundation grant sponsoring the Wyoming coring project that led to the
paper.
First author Bowen was an undergraduate in the U-M Department of
Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Another of the paper's authors, William Clyde of the University of New
Hampshire, received his doctorate
under Gingerich at U-M. Two of
Gingerich's sons, now U-M undergraduates, worked on the project as
well.
"It is surprising to find that the
onset of the PETM is characterized by
not one but two successive carbon
release events, separated by a recovery to background levels," said Gingerich.
"This two-step onset is a working
hypothesis based on evidence not seen
elsewhere that will now be tested further and probed to understand its implications for the cause of PETM
greenhouse warming."

almost 56 million years ago. The study
was led by Gabe Bowen, an associate
professor of geology and geophysics
at the University of Utah.
Bowen, Gingerich and their colleagues report that carbonate or limestone nodules in Wyoming sediment
cores show the global warming episode 55.5 million-to-55.3 million years
ago involved the average annual release of a minimum of 0.9 petagrams
(1.98 trillion pounds) of carbon to the
atmosphere, and probably much more
over shorter periods.
That is "within an order of magnitude of, and may have approached, the
9.5 petagrams (20.9 trillion pounds)
per year associated with modern anthropogenic carbon emissions," the researchers wrote. Since 1900, human
burning of fossil fuels emitted an av-
vious conflicting evidence indicated
the carbon release lasted anywhere
from less than a year to tens of thousands of years. The new research shows
atmospheric carbon levels returned to
normal within a few thousand years
after the first pulse, probably as carbon dissolved in the ocean. It took up
to 200,000 years for conditions to normalize after the second pulse.
The new study also ruled as unlikely some theorized causes of the
warming episode, including an asteroid impact, slow melting of permafrost, burning of organic-rich soil or
drying out of a major seaway. Instead,
the findings suggest, in terms of timing, that more likely causes included
melting of seafloor methane ices
known as clathrates, or volcanism heating organic-rich rocks and releasing
methane.

NASA Rover finds active and ancient
organic chemistry on Mars
NASA's Mars Curiosity rover has
measured a tenfold spike in methane,
an organic chemical, in the atmosphere
around it and detected other organic
molecules in a rock-powder sample collected by
the robotic laboratory's
drill.
"This temporary increase in methane -sharply up and then back
down -- tells us there must
be some relatively localized source," said Sushil
Atreya of the University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor,
a member of the Curiosity rover science team.
"There are many possible
sources, biological or
non-biological, such as
interaction of water and
rock."
Researchers used Curiosity's
onboard Sample Analysis at Mars
(SAM) laboratory a dozen times in a
20-month period to sniff methane in
the atmosphere. During two of those
months, in late 2013 and early 2014,
four measurements averaged seven
parts per billion. Before and after that,
readings averaged only one-tenth that
level.
Curiosity also detected different
Martian organic chemicals in powder
drilled from a rock dubbed
Cumberland, the first definitive detection of organics in surface materials of Mars. These Martian organics
could either have formed on Mars or
been delivered to Mars by meteorites.
Organic molecules, which contain
carbon and usually hydrogen, are
chemical building blocks of life, although they can exist without the presence of life. Curiosity's findings from
analyzing samples of atmosphere and
rock powder do not reveal whether
Mars has ever harbored living microbes, but the findings do shed light
on a chemically active modern Mars
and on favorable conditions for life on
ancient Mars.
"We will keep working on the
puzzles these findings present," said
John Grotzinger, Curiosity project scientist of the California Institute of
Technology in Pasadena. "Can we learn
more about the active chemistry causing such fluctuations in the amount of
methane in the atmosphere? Can we
choose rock targets where identifiable
organics have been preserved?"
Researchers worked many months
to determine whether any of the organic material detected in the
Cumberland sample was truly Martian. Curiosity's SAM lab detected in
several samples some organic carbon
compounds that were, in fact, transported from Earth inside the rover.
However, extensive testing and analysis yielded confidence in the detection
of Martian organics.
Identifying which specific Martian
organics are in the rock is complicated
by the presence of perchlorate minerals in Martian rocks and soils. When
heated inside SAM, the perchlorates
alter the structures of the organic compounds, so the identities of the Martian organics in the rock remain uncertain.
"This first confirmation of organic
carbon in a rock on Mars holds much
promise," said Curiosity Participating
Scientist Roger Summons of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in
Cambridge. "Organics are important
because they can tell us about the
chemical pathways by which they were
formed and preserved. In turn, this is
informative about Earth-Mars differences and whether or not particular
environments represented by Gale
Crater sedimentary rocks were more
or less favorable for accumulation of
organic materials. The challenge now
is to find other rocks on Mount Sharp
that might have different and more
extensive inventories of organic compounds."
Researchers also reported that
Curiosity's taste of Martian water,
bound into lakebed minerals in the
Cumberland rock more than three billion years ago, indicates the planet
lost much of its water before that
lakebed formed and continued to lose
large amounts after.
SAM analyzed hydrogen isotopes
from water molecules that had been
locked inside a rock sample for billions of years and were freed when
SAM heated it, yielding information
about the history of Martian water.
The ratio of a heavier hydrogen isotope, deuterium, to the most common
hydrogen isotope can provide a signature for comparison across different
stages of a planet's history.
"It's really interesting that our measurements from Curiosity of gases extracted from ancient rocks can tell us
about loss of water from Mars," said
Paul Mahaffy, SAM principal investigator of NASA's Goddard Space Flight
Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
The ratio of deuterium to hydrogen
has changed because
the lighter hydrogen escapes from the upper
atmosphere of Mars
much more readily than
heavier deuterium. In
order to go back in time
and see how the deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio
in Martian water
changed over time, researchers can look at the
ratio in water in the current atmosphere and
water trapped in rocks
at different times in the
planet's history.
Martian meteorites
found on Earth also provide some information, but this record has gaps.
No known Martian meteorites are even
close to the same age as the rock studied on Mars, which formed about 3.9
billion to 4.6 billion years ago, according to Curiosity's measurements.
The ratio that Curiosity found in
the Cumberland sample is about onehalf the ratio in water vapor in today's
Martian atmosphere, suggesting much
of the planet's water loss occurred since
that rock formed. However, the measured ratio is about three times higher
than the ratio in the original water
supply of Mars, based on the assumption that supply had a ratio similar to
that measured in Earth's oceans. This
suggests much of Mars' original water
was lost before the rock formed.
Curiosity is one element of NASA's
ongoing Mars research and preparation for a human mission to Mars in
the 2030s. Caltech manages the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena,
California, and JPL manages Curiosity rover science investigations for
NASA's Science Mission Directorate
in Washington. The SAM investigation is led by Paul Mahaffy of Goddard.
Two SAM instruments key in these
discoveries are the Quadrupole Mass
Spectrometer, developed at Goddard,
and the Tunable Laser Spectrometer,
developed at JPL.
warming episode some 56 million

study concluded the episode was
more like modern, global warming
than previously thought
Gray, roundish nodules of carbonate or limestone in these sediment cores
drilled from northern Wyoming revealed the amount of carbon in the
atmosphere, oceans, plants and soils
during the Paleocene-Eocene global
warming episode some 56 million
years ago.
"The Paleocene-Eocene thermal
maximum has stood out as a striking,
but contested, example of how 21stcentury-style atmospheric carbon dioxide buildup can affect climate, environments and ecosystems worldwide," said Bowen, an associate professor of geology and geophysics at
the University of Utah.
"This new study tightens the link.
Carbon release back then looked a lot
like fossil-fuel emissions today, so we
might learn a lot about the future from
changes in climate, plants and animal
communities 55.5 million years ago."
Bowen cautioned, however, that
global climate already was much
warmer than today's when the Paleocene-Eocene warming began, and
there were no ice caps, "so this played
out on a different playing field than
what we have today."
The Paleocene-Eocene thermal
maximum was first recognized by its
effect on the evolution of life documented in the fossil record. On land,
the PETM is a faunal change event
marking the first appearance of the
earliest ancestors of cows, sheep,
horses and primates in the fossil record.
Gingerich's U-M research team was
responsible for this discovery, starting in the 1970s and early 1980s, working on the Polecat Bench PaleoceneEocene stratigraphic section in northwestern Wyoming—the same stratigraphic section analyzed in great detail in the new Nature Geoscience paper.
Gingerich continues to study details of the Paleocene-Eocene faunal
transition at Polecat Bench as a way to
understand implications of presentday greenhouse warming.
Cuba - Cruise
ship's Grand
Central Station
Could a Cuban beach vacation be
the next big thing for American travelers?
Certainly, it appears more Americans will have the opportunity to visit
the island nation as a result of the
newly announced trade and political
agreement between the United States
and Cuba. While the agreement stops
short of permitting travel strictly for
tourism purposes — no actual beach
vacations, in other words — it does
allow it for a range of other reasons,
including family visits.
Travel professionals are hopeful,
however, that the agreement is setting
the stage for an era of full and free
access to Cuba, especially given that
today’s news included word that the
U.S. will reopen its embassy in Cuba.
Either way, travel professionals say
there is significant pent-up demand
among Americans to see Cuba.
Cuban President Raul Castro said
that U.S. President Barack Obama
deserved the "respect and recognition"
of Cuba after the countries restored
diplomatic relations.
“It has been the forbidden fruit,”
says Steve Loucks, a spokesman for
Travel Leaders, a major travel agency
based in Plymouth, Minn. Loucks
points out that when Travel Leaders
surveyed its agents earlier this year, it
found that a majority (55%) had clients who had expressed interest in
Cuba.
But as Loucks and other travel professionals note, the attractions of Cuba
go beyond the “forbidden” aspect. The
island nation has many of the advantages of other Caribbean destinations
— think beaches and sunny skies —
but adds to that a couple of others.
Namely, a rich sense of history, going
all the way back to the time of Columbus, and a close proximity to the United
States.
The proximity could also make
Cuba a major draw for cruise ships,
says Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor
in chief of the Cruise Critic site. But
she says the cruise market could take
a little longer to develop because the
country lacks the physical infrastructure — meaning proper docks and ports
— to support larger ships.

Does the
Presidential
Executive Order
on Immigration
even exist?
On November 20, in a prime-time
speech, President Barack Obama announced that he was taking “executive
action” to stop deportation of some
five million illegals (undocumented
immigrants?). “Executive action” generally means an Executive Order or a
Presidential Memorandum, although
the distinction between the two is
somewhat blurred. Both are published
in the Federal Register, and are considered to have the force of law.
But where is that executive action?
As of last week, no such order or
memo, supposedly signed by the President on November 20th, exists in the
Federal Registry.
Earlier this year, Texas Attorney,
Orly Taitz filed an action in a
Brownsville, Texas Federal District
Court (Orly Taitz v. Jeh Johnson –
Secretary of Homeland Security) seeking to stop the trafficking of illegal
aliens, the spread of crime, terror, poverty and infectious diseases. On November 25, 2014, Taitz filed a motion
in that case to require the Federal Government to produce a copy of Obama’s
executive action, because it is not in
the Federal Registry. Taitz is also
asking the federal judge to rule on the
Constitutionality of the order or memorandum, assuming it exists.
Taitz v. Johnson parallels a lawsuit
filed by 17 states challenging the
President’s action to protect illegal
aliens from deportation.
Speculation abounds why no order
or memorandum can be found. An
article authored by Dr. Jerome Corsi
suggests that Obama may have wanted
to avoid Republicans being able to
bring impeachment proceedings, and
decided to have the federal executive
action filed by DHS Secretary Johnson,
placing him (instead of the President)
in a position to be impeached in case
Republicans decide to act. Corsi says
that a memorandum referring to immigration changes was signed by Secretary Jeh Johnson and was filed on
November 26, 2014, in the Federal
Registry.
Despite media hype and reporting,
when Obama traveled to Nevada and
amid fanfare signed two executive
orders, neither had anything to do with
immigration. Apparently the reports
of Presidential Action were released
by the White House to the media pool,
and none or the reporters were permitted to be present at the actual signing.

RD had installed gun racks on the
inner ring of the cage up top so when
traveling over rough ground, they would
be held securely and out of the way.
We had already removed the guns
from the racks, loaded them, checked
the safeties and now we were ready if we
jumped a deer.
Traveling through the mud, water
and weeds, we had to watch very carefully for stumps, logs, holes or ditches,
because we were traveling along a good
clip probable 20-25 MPH and this was
fast for the terrain we were in and being
up in the tower, about 15 feet above the
jeep, every swing and sway of the jeep
was multiplied where we were riding
and at times it seemed as if we might
turn over, and if Dub made a quick turn
for any reason, we would have.
Suddenly, as it always seemed to happen, a deer jumped up about a hundred
yards ahead of us and was running
straightway at full speed.
RD told Dub to step on the gas and
close the distance, meanwhile, the dogs
had gotten the scent of the deer and were
now running and barking although they
could not see the deer they knew where
it was and where it was heading.
RD had become impatient and without warning, he fired at the running deer
and missed. Robert shouted not shoot,
that it was a doe but RD had already
committed and fired again and down
went the deer, his bullet had hit her.

Eastern returns...
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
“This is more than a thrill,” former
Easter Airlines flight attendant Juliana
Scott said. “This is a rebirth of our
family coming back together.”
For now, this is Eastern Airline’s
only plane. But the airline plans to add
20 more planes and will begin charter
flights in March. The company has 50
employees, but that number will take
off as the flights do.
“As we add each airplane, we will
add somewhere between 30 and 40
people,” Eastern Airlines President and
Chief Executive officer Ed Wegel said.
“So by the end of next year we anticipate having seven or eight airplanes in
operation, so we’ll be at (400) to 500
employees.”
Miami-Dade County Commissioner
Audrey Edmonson was an Eastern
Airlines flight attendant from 1972 to
1987.
“It meant a lot to me,” Edmonson
said of the airline’s return. “As a kid
growing up I used to look at the flight
attendants and say, ‘That’s what I am
going to be.’ And that was one of the
first jobs I applied for.”
Asked if she had any plans to get
back in the air, Edmonson said, “As a
passenger, yes.”
When charters begin they will service the Caribbean, Mexico and northern portions of South America.
