Jesus is the Reason for the Season Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! The next issue of the Westside Journal will be January 8, 2015 Volume XI Issue 29 www.mywestsidejournal.com Christmas with West Side Seniors Last Thursday, senior citizens who attend the Westside Senior Center were joined by a large group from the Life Care Center of Hilliard to enjoy a Christmas dinner provided by the Westside Journal staff and some wonderful helpers! The staff of Life Care provided desserts for the dinner. Everyone was given menus to fill out for the items they wanted to eat and POSTAL PATRON P.O. Box 607 Callahan, FL 32011-0607 Westside Journal PAID Callahan, FL Permit No. 4 PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE Christmas was merrier for 180 Nassau County youngsters who participated in Shop with a Cop on December 11 at the Yulee Wal-Mart and December 18 at the Yulee Target stores with deputies and correctional officers from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol. Shop with a Cop pairs the officers with children from low-income families who treat them to a spirited day of shopping. The program creates a positive bond between the children and the officers. “Nothing embraces the Christmas spirit more than watching children select the toys and books on their wish lists and making sure they have clothes and other necessities,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “I look forward Thursday, December 25, 2014 filled to their desires! They were also served from a platter of desserts to choose from. Santa Claus made a visit and everyone also received treat bags from the ABATE group. Each person was given tickets and awarded a prize! The group had a wonderful time of celebrating Christmas together and also enjoyed some great food! We’re already looking forward to next year! 'Shop with a Cop' a Success! like clothing, shoes and other needs. The other half is reserved for toys, movies and other fun items. The event is made possible by the support of NCSO Charities, Inc. (which holds fundraising events throughout the year), Amelia Island Concours d' Elegance Foundation, to participating in this event every year and I am very proud of the officers who volunteer their time to make this day special for these children.” Each child is allotted $100, half of which they must spend on necessities Inc., Wal-Mart, Target and individual donors; Chick-fil-A provided food at both events. NCSO Charities, Inc. is a Florida Not For Profit Corporation established to organize, promote and sponsor charitable missions and events in Nassau County. Hard to believe another year is fast approaching. As we celebrate the birth of Christ this Thursday, make sure to make Him a part of your celebration. After all, without Jesus we would have no celebration at all! This past week, beginning last Sunday, I was reminded of how blessed I am to have such Godly parents in my life. Roger’s mom had her family Christmas celebration last week and my parents held their family Christmas celebration Saturday. Both of our parents are such examples of faithfulness to our loving God. They continue to spread the word of God to each of us. Each shared life experiences and scriptures with us as we intently listened. Their faithfulness and love for our heavenly father continues to radiate from each of them. They are pillars of strength for each of us in this difficult world we live in! As they each watch their children, grandchildren and now greatgrandchildren go through life, their main concern is that we all know Christ and accept Him as our personal Savior. Not a day goes by that each of our parents don’t think about us and pray for us each day. My dad shared with our group to make sure and read the Christmas story, from the Bible, Christmas morning. We are so blessed to have such loving Godly parents who we can turn to for anything. But let us not forget our heavenly Father who is always available. He is just waiting for us to call on Him. As we celebrate this Christmas season, let’s try to also think of those less fortunate than us. There are many people hurting today, perhaps from sickness, the loss of a loved one, loss of a job or home, etc. A simple smile or hug can really make someone’s day. Spending a minute to visit or perhaps giving a small gift may make the difference in their day or perhaps their lives. We serve an awesome God who teaches us to serve others. I wish for you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. This will be our last issue for this year as we always take a little time to rejuvenate following Christmas! The New Year’s issue of the Westside Journal will be Thursday, January 8, 2015! Have a blessed Christmas! (TAX) SEASON’S GREETINGS! On December 16, 2014, the U.S. Senate passed the bill to extend previously-expired tax provisions but only a few were reestablished with this bill for tax year 2014, (not at all an exhaustive list) including: • Florida sales taxes deduction is back! • Cancellation of debt on personal residence can once again be made non-taxable (Re: Forms 1099-C combined with Form 982 “reduction of basis” terms) • and watch for a longer list here next week! The “lag” in the Congressional passing of the retroactive bill to January 1st 2014 but will certainly delay the opening of the e-filing of tax returns to IRS’ e-filing; however, we use ProSeries tax software and it permits us to gather taxpayers’ tax data earlier and then e-file tax returns as soon as the IRS officially opens the e-filing “window”.☺ Taxpayers should know that our website www.TomBlairEA.com provides, under FORMS, a FREE down-loadable and very useful 2014 Tax Organizer that serves both individuals as well as those with small businesses; it also makes a very handy “checklist” to help taxpayers gather all kinds of data that may be required to be reported on their 2014 tax returns (useful to both individuals, entire households, and to small businesses as well). • We will need full documentation for 2014 on (“ObamaCare” compliant) medical insurance coverage during 2014 and/or • Student tuition Form 1098-T plus a detailed statement from the source of the higher education during 2014. I/we plan to provide this column in the Westside Journal each Thursday during the 20142015 tax season. As a practicing trial lawyer in Nassau County for 35 years, the needs of my clients put me in court sometimes on a daily basis. I take this opportunity to express gratitude to Circuit Judge Suzanne Bass who will leave Nassau County at the end of the year. As Circuit Judge Robert M. Foster stated in a recent memorandum to the members of the Nassau County Bar Association: “The Chief Judge has requested that Judge Bass return to Jacksonville to fill the vacancy in the Juvenile Division left by Judge Mahon’s election as the new Chief Judge. Judge Adrian Soud has been assigned to the Historic Courthouse effective January 2015.” Despite commuting daily to her home in Jacksonville, Judge Bass quickly became a member of our community. She exhibited a strong work ethic on a daily basis. She and her judicial assistant were responsive to lawyers who needed to schedule hearings as soon as possible. She treated litigants and lawyers with courtesy and respect while delivering balance, integrity and fairness. She created a case management system, which was implemented and is currently in use to address the need for prompt treatment of residential foreclosures. She was working with local lawyers who sought to volunteer their services in foreclosure cases to assist deserving homeowners in their attempt to find ways to save their homes. Judge Bass has quickly become a member of our community. Early on she sought to invest herself in our community and quickly made friends up and down Centre Street. Judge Bass had earlier shared the challenges inherent in the long commute. The A1A leg between I-95 and Fernandina Beach is a common lament to all of us. Judge Bass has shown she loves Nassau County and I know she is sad to say goodbye to the good people who live and work here. Judge Bass will be missed. It is with great appreciation that we thank Judge Bass and her judicial assistant, Kathy Fristrom. It is a shame that we are losing such a good judge based on her two hour a day commute. However, after realizing that it would be physically impossible to move her home closer to the Historic Courthouse we have resigned ourselves to the reality that our loss is Jacksonville’s gain. I welcome Judge Soud to Nassau County and know him to be an excellent judge, just as his father was before him. Again, thank you, Judge Bass, for who you are and for the delivery of outstanding judicial services. Gary Baker Thank you! Dear Editor, I want to say 'thank you’ to all the angels that work at Hilliard Life Care Center. My husband, Tom Waters, has been a patient at the center three times in past years and they have always been so nice to him and me! He is a good patient and they enjoy cutting up with him. The CNAs seem to go out of their way to take care of him. The physical therapists have done such a good job working with Tom to get him better in every way. They have spoiled him! It took a lot to get him out of the room, visit with others and do some activities. Because of their work ethics, I will be able to bring him home again. I also really admire the workers in the dining room. Also a ‘big thank you’ to the sweet ladies that work the front desk to all the others that put so much dedication into their work to take care of these residents. For the service and care that you have given my husband, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. May God bless you all! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Girl Scouts Have Record PB&J Drive Throughout the month of October, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and the Nassau County Volunteer Center partnered on the 16th Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive to collect these food staples for the needy. Food bins were placed in schools, churches, banks and businesses; and the two organizations publicized the campaign. This drive was in coordination with the October 24 nationwide “Make A Difference Day.” Over 150 Girl Scouts in 12 troops were involved in this hugely successful drive. In all, 880 pounds of peanut butter and jelly: 14,000 ounces were collected, a record for the campaign! This quantity could produce as many as 3500 sandwiches. Since the drive began 16 years ago, over 7400 pounds of peanut butter and jelly have been collected which could make 35,500 sandwiches. Recipients of the food collected included the Barnabas Center; the Council on Aging; Head Start Programs at Peck Center and in Callahan; and the Salvation Army Hope House. For more information about the Nassau County Volunteer Center and upcoming holiday programs for those in need, call the Center at 904-261-2771, or email at [email protected]. Please visit the Nassau County Volunteer Center at www. volunteernassau.org. Your help can make a difference! Congratulations Bryan Davis! As I am writing this Christmas reflection, I realize how old I am getting. I remember as a child sitting at my grandmother’s house studying the Sears Wish Book. I would wear that catalog out from all of the time that I would spend dreaming about what I wanted. The one thing that all of the things that I wished for as a child have in common is that I don’t know where they are anymore. Of all that gifts that I have ever been given, the only gift that has had real staying power in my life, is the gift of God. According to the Bible, salvation is a gift of God: Ephesians 2: 8-9. God gave His Son: John 3:16. As a result of God’s love gift of the Son, the gift of salvation became a reality. The gifts that God gives never wear out, never get discarded, and never cease to be useful, important, or relevant. The Wish Book gifts did not even last me through my teenage years, but God’s gift of salvation is eternal. It is truly an amazing thought to understand that God’s gifts will still be useful 70 billion years from now. Eternal life is a gift with mammoth implications. From a Biblical perspective, heaven and hell are very real. Enlightened people, in a secularized culture, want us to be liberated from our fairy tales and superstitions. I hear all of this rhetoric and my heart breaks for the “enlightened ones”. Christianity is a crutch, but what is wrong with crutches when they enable you to walk again? The truth of all of reality is that human beings are broken because of sin. Even worse, humanity cannot fix what is broken regardless of their IQ or innovativeness. God has to fix our sin problem, and He has sent the fix for our sin in the person of Christ. This Christmas would be a good time to receive the greatest gift that has ever been given. In light of the gift of the Son, worship of Christ is a more appropriate response than anger at Him. For all that is going on in the world, let’s be clear about one thing: “God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son and whoever believes in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life.” This isn’t just old school this is ancient and eternal truth from God! The Water Boys Call Bob Chavers at 904.608.5669 Check out our website at www.waterboysmacclennyfl.com 'Felony Lane Gang’ Members Arrested Deputies from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office arrested two members of the so called ‘Felony Lane Gang’ Thursday morning after a brief chase from a strip mall at Blackrock Road and SR-200 into Georgia. The individuals were spotted breaking out a car window in an attempt to steal a purse at the Eagle Crossing Shopping Center parking lot. After being spotted by a witness, the individuals fled in a White Kia rental car north on Blackrock Road. The vehicle was spotted by an NCSO Deputy as it traveled south on Chester Road. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled west on Pages Dairy Road to US-17. The vehicle then turned north on US-17. While approaching the I-95 northbound entrance ramp, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck landscape type shrubbery, which caused front-end damage. The vehicle continued north on I-95 into Georgia where they were eventually stopped by Camden Sheriff’s Office and Kingsland Police Department at mile marker number 9. Arrested were: Mathis Lewis, 54, and Bernard Robinson, 53, both of Ft. Lauderdale, for attempted Burglary and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding. The 'Felony Lane Gang' is a group of several men and women who allegedly break into vehicles, stealing checks, identification, credit cards, and debit cards and then taking money from the victims' accounts using the far drive-thru lane of various area banks,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “The suspects use the far lane, or 'felony lane,' as coined by the bank industry, so that bank employees would not see they are wearing wigs and costumes.” Typically, the packs of thieves will move quickly through various parts of the country in rental cars, casing parking lots at gyms, daycare centers, malls, sports stadiums, parks and tourist attractions. Mathis Lewis Bernard Robinson They break into higher-value vehicles, collecting wallets, purses and driver's licenses, and drive to gas stations in a neighboring town to try the stolen credit cards and make sure they are valid. They avoid going into the stations or convenience stores to steer clear of surveillance cameras. “Once the men have broken into numerous vehicles, they start molding female gang members to look like the stolen victim's identity; coloring their hair, purchasing wigs, and wearing large sun glasses,” Leeper said. “The gang members then transport the females to the local banks where they will present the victim's driver's license and a stolen 2nd party check. Their mode of operation is the only clue: After spotting a woman who left her purse in her car, they break the glass, they take the purse and they leave. Then weeks later, the woman finds out that they've tried to cash her checks and use her credit cards, so it's a form of identity theft as well." The nickname 'Felony Lane Gang' also refers to their pattern. They are believed to hire women to try to cash stolen checks at drive through banks. "They instruct her to use the furthest lane from the window so the teller won't be able to see the person in the car up close," Leeper said. They are also adept at avoiding security cameras when they commit auto burglaries all of which makes catching them a challenge for law enforcement.
