2015 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
The benefits of being a Center member are many.
2015 membership is $35 and runs until December
31st, 2015. We serve around 4,000 individuals each
year but usually only about 9 to 10% actually join as
members. Our goal is to add 200 additional members
in 2015. We want people to have the benefits that
members receive, things cost less for members.
An additional 200 members will also bring in an
additional $7,000 for our programs and services.
Please introduce your friends to the Center and
all we offer. If you attend the Center, but are not
a member please consider becoming a member.
You will save money in the long run if you
participate in classes, trips, foot care, etc. plus
you are invited to member only events and you
have the satisfaction of supporting your Center.
$PRING FOR $ENIORS AUCTION GALA
Our Auction is three months away. As stated
elsewhere in the newsletter our goal is to raise
$75,000. A lofty goal but one we can meet if
everyone pulls together. This is a really fun party.
There is a treasure chest with $250 if your key opens
the chest. We play heads and tails a great game with
fun prizes. We dash for desserts to claim the most
luscious for our table. We eat delicious food. We bid
on treasures like theme baskets, restaurants, travel
gift certificates, weekend getaways, and one of a kind
items that are too special to pass up. Now can you
help? Get a donation or buy a gift card from your
favorite restaurant or store, make and donate a theme
basket, provide a service or throw a party and on it
goes. Ask family and friends to help too. Volunteer.
Put a table together, and attend the event. We need
your help and support. Thanks for helping to make
this a great event.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Tax ID # 91-0823767
Welcome 2015 and Happy New Year to each of you. I hope your Holidays were
joyous and that you enjoyed every minute with loved ones and friends. Now we
look forward to a fantastic 2015. This will be the best year for our Center in it is
42nd year of service. I am excited about all the plans. Before a look forward, let’s
take a look back at 2014. As I write this in early December, I am pleased with our
2014 year. We served a record number of people; we increased programs and
services; we received a grant and have eight new state of the art computers for
our lab. The building and grounds were improved and thanks to the City we have
a new roof, boiler, craft room floor and now the building is more inviting and
welcoming. Our fundraising was very good and we set a record for auction
proceeds. Our Rummage Sales and Bazaar earned record amounts and our
special events were terrific topped off by our September Art, Wine and Chocolate and The Irish Tenor
Holiday Concert at Benaroya Hall next week. We celebrated diversity with Rainbow Bingo and being a
place where all are welcome. The Ballard Community is very generous and the Center thanks them for
their support and help. The best part of 2014 was “YOU,” our members and participants. You make
this Center what it is, “The Friendly Center” and a home away from home for all.

TIDINGS 2
I am excited to start 2015. We will continue to grow and increase services with many new offerings.
I am looking forward to all the computer classes we will be offering as part of the City grant. Do take
some classes as we will be presenting something for everyone and at every level. We have really good
health and wellness opportunities to keep us all at our healthiest and best. Other classes and groups
are here to stretch our minds and to keep us sharp mentally and physically. This is a top notch Center
and we care about one another. There are always people here to listen, to have fun with, to help and
to give support and friendship. To offer all our services takes money so our fundraising is vitally
important. This first quarter we have a rummage

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH
I want to thank each of you again for all your volunteer service for the Center. Each of you are precious and your service deeply
appreciated. You are the heart and soul of the Center. Volunteers are the best. Thank you! Each Tidings we honor three groups
or individuals that exemplify the service you all provide.
January Volunteers of the Month
I start out each year in awe of all our volunteer receptionists. They are at the heartbeat of the Center whether in the upstairs or
downstairs reception areas. When you call, they are the first voice you hear, when you come in they are the first smiling face you
see. These amazing volunteers do it all. They answer phones, give directions, handle signups and financial transactions, make
copies, do many special projects each day, take reservations and so much more. They do it all with a smile and competently
handle all they are faced with on each shift. They are amazing, kind, competent, organized, problem solvers and expert in doing
five things at once. So congratulations to Patti, Jamie, Kim, Sondra, Lydia, Aigul, Teresita, Beverly, Kathryn, Bente, Linda P.,
Amanda, and Linda G., Betty, Bud, Helen, Laura, Ruth, Ken, you are our talented January volunteers for the month. Thank you
and congratulations.
February Volunteers of the Month
Our February honorees are the Santa breakfast volunteers. That was quite an event. To all the “kids” from Adams and their
leaders you were wonderful at serving and helping in many areas. You were polite, nice, hardworking, fun and just great to help
out. To the crew in the kitchen – Donna M., Carol, and Adams volunteers you were the best and the food was yummy. To Wendy
and Ruth who were amazing at organizing all the kid’s books and to all the cashiers Aigul, Janice, and Patti you were fast, efficient
and always had the welcoming smile. Mrs. Claus, you were a hit and several kids said they came to meet you and not Santa!
To photographer, Boon, and crew, you were outstanding and the kids and parents loved the experience. All in all it was a most
successful event for the kids, Adams School, the Center and the community. Thank you, thank you all volunteers of the month.
March Volunteers of the Month
Our March Volunteers of the Month are “Chef Bob’s kitchen crew.” Donna S., Trina, Phyllis, Donna M., Lydia, Grace, Pat D.,
Madeline, Roland, Sophie, Elizabeth, Leif, Olivia, Lucia, and more. These talented volunteers help Chef Bob prepare lunch five
days a week, Wednesday night dinner and all our special event meals. That is a lot of chopping, shredding, mixing, baking,
cooking to serve all these meals on time, looking fantastic, and tasting delicious. They are a great group that works cooperatively,
are organized and have good skills. You are what keeps us eating yummy food that’s nutritious and tasty.

MORE AT OUR CENTER
SNOW
JOB BANK
We can still get some “white stuff” this winter. Remember if
the Seattle Public Schools are closed or running late, so is the
center. We follow their schedule. Even if we are open
or starting late, call 206-297-0403 to check or see
our website BallardSeniorCenter.org for weather
announcements. Most of the staff live a fair distance away
and getting to the Center might still have us running even
later. In snow and bad weather, the safest place for you is in
your own home, not on the roads. Broken bones, wrecked
cars are not worth a trip to the Center. Be Careful!
The center has a job bank. We try to match those looking for work
with those offering work. We do a criminal back ground check on
all applicants. With more jobs opening up with a slightly better
economy, we hope to make more matches. If you need someone
to do work for you or of you want to work, give us a call at
206-297-0403 and ask for the Job Bank.
FRIENDLY CENTER
We are “The Friendly Center”. Thanks for your help in making
everyone feel welcome and included. It is so nice when new
people come and are invited to sit at your table or give them a
tour or give a big smile and make them feel at home.
This is a terrific center and your welcoming ways are so
important. Thank you one and all.
BALLARD MARKET FUNDRAISER
Your receipts from shopping at the Ballard Market benefit us.
We receive 1% of the money spent. Every receipt helps!
You can drop off your receipts at the 1st floor reception.
HELP KEEP COSTS DOWN
We appreciate your offers to help keep all of our trips,
classes, services and other offerings free or as affordable
as possible. If you wish to make a contribution you
can donate at the 2nd floor reception or online at
BallardSeniorCenter.org. Thank you again.
MONTHLY BOARD MEETINGS
Last Tuesday of Each Month, 5:00pm
Center members, participants and guests are welcome
to attend Board meetings. We welcome you to observe;
however, you’re not permitted to participate during the
meeting. Please let us know prior to attending so we can
arrange for seating.
NIFTY THRIFTY BOOKSTORE
Open Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm
And Special Book Sales during the Rummage Sales
We have hundreds and hundreds of beautiful books. We also have
beautiful journals, reader glasses, note cards, holiday cards and
more. The center is very fortunate to have received the contents of
an entire book store that closed. We have new books that include
children’s, teens, fiction, biographies, cookbooks, travel, how-to
and many other categories. Our plan is to have various book sales
during the year as well as our wonderful Bookstore.
VOLUNTEERS
It feels good to volunteer. The Center always needs volunteers
in many different areas. The volunteers are the heart and soul
of the Center. Whether you volunteer in the kitchen, at events,
as receptionists, work on the building or grounds, lead a group,
teach something or work in a specific area we need you. Training
is provided and you are deeply appreciated each time. Do consider
being a volunteer and let Kristina know if you want to join our
greatly appreciated volunteer group. You can start by stopping
by to contact Kristina at the Center, 206-297-0403 or
[email protected].

Wed., Jan., 28th - Dining Hall @ 12:30pm
Anyone can laugh without needing to rely on humor, jokes or
comedy. Laughter is initially simulated as a physical exercise
while maintaining eye contact with others in the group while
promoting childlike playfulness. In most cases this soon leads to
real and contagious laughter. Laughter yoga is the only technique that allows adults to achieve sustained hearty laughter
without involving cognitive thought. It bypasses the intellectual
systems that normally act as a brake on natural laughter.

Policies and Procedures
PARKING
Please remember when parking in front of the Center to
keep off the sidewalks. If your car is blocking the sidewalks
it poses a danger to pedestrians and cyclists. In addition
the City may issue parking tickets for blocking. We need to
be diligent about keeping sidewalks clear for everyone.
CENTER PHONES
Please use your cell phones for your personal calls. The
center’s phones must be kept open for business calls. Too
often our phones are being tied up by participants using them
for their own personal calls. Our wonderful center is still a
business and the phones are for business use. Thank you!
NOT A MARKET PLACE
Our instructors are strictly prohibited from selling any
products or services at the Center and will only give
general information about the subjects they cover, not their
business. Business cards may not be passed out, but you
may ask for a card. Please report violations.
TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION
The following services are useful for arranging transportation
to the Center or other appointments.
SEATTLE METRO BUSES
We are on metro line 44.
ACCESS
Access is available to those who qualify, and volunteer
transportation will escort you to essential appointments.
Call ACCESS at 206-205-5000.
SENIOR SERVICES TRANSPORTATION

Program at 206-448-5740.
HYDE SHUTTLE
These shuttles are available through Senior Services and
Metro. To contact the Hyde Shuttle to see what options there
are and the coverage areas please call HYDE SHUTTLES at
206-727-6262.

 No weapons of any kind are allowed on the premises.
CREDIT CARDS

Sometimes it may be easier to pay for a class, dues, trips or
special events by credit card/debit rather than cash or check.
Please let the receptionist know if you wish to pay this way.

COPIES & FAXES
Copies are available from the receptionist for 15 cents each.
Local (not long distance) faxes can be sent for $1 per page.
NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
It is the policy of Ballard NW Senior Center and Senior

creed, religion, sex, age, national origin, marital status,
sensory, physical or mental handicap, political ideology
or sexual orientation in employment or applications for
employment or in the administration or delivery of services
or any other benefits. On request, people with disabilities
will be provided with reasonable accommodations.
FREE FOOD PROGRAM
We are all thankful that the Center is occasionally the recipient
of donated food from our local grocery stores. In fairness to ALL,
we remind everyone to take only 1-2 items from each category
(bakery, fruits, vegetables), so that there is enough for ALL.
