Welcome to Community Music Center!
Our commitment to the 93-year mission of providing high quality
music education to anyone continues to unfold today in ways that
offer life-changing experiences. I invite you to look through this
year’s catalog to learn how you can grow and be challenged musically in a community referred to by many as their chosen family.
CMC is proud to have played an important role this past year in the
lives of over 2,300 students and roughly 19,000 music enthusiasts
in our audiences.
We presented over 300 performances at our Capp Street concert hall and at other locations
around the Bay Area. At both the Mission and Richmond District Branches, CMC’s faculty offers lessons on over 30 different instruments, an opportunity to join a variety of ensembles,
and a range of coursework in areas such as music theory and songwriting. With student
ages spanning over 90 years, CMC believes that it is never too late to study music.
Come make music with us!

Musicianship
Private lessons: The foundation of instruction at CMC, private lessons provide guidance
through the process of learning to play an
instrument or sing. Designed to nurture individual talent, lessons help students learn how
to practice, develop technical skill, improve
musicianship, and gain a knowledge of and
appreciation for musical works (see page 3).
Students are invited to participate in recitals
every quarter. Juried evaluations in May offer students the opportunity to: get feedback
from other faculty members, audition for the
all-level All School Recital held in June, and,
if age 18 or under and receiving financial aid,
audition for private lesson merit scholarships.
View our Event Calendar at www.sfcmc.org.

Lyric Writing
The Language of Lyric
Photo: Seojung Kim
A songwriter is both a lyricist and a composer,
with a passion for combining language with
music. This course focuses on the lyricist, on the
craft of writing the language in a song. The concepts we’ll study are all primary elements in lyric
and include an examination of the main figures
of speech in figurative language (e.g. metaphor,
simile, symbolism, etc.). We’ll examine story development (who, what, when, where, and why),
the four points of view common in narrative,
rhyme and the principals of phonetic connectivity, and development of the primary song sections (the verse, refrain, chorus, and bridge).
We’ll also learn to “object write,” a creative writing
technique involving the sense bound imagery
associated with memories and experiences…the
stuff stories come from.

Ear Training
Ear training is an important part of your development as a musician. It links theory with living
music and helps you recognize intervals, root
movements, melodic phrases, musical form and
rhythm. This is important for all musicians but
for singers and improvisers it is essential. But
it’s good for everything...it’s especially good
with fruit salad. The biggest goal of this class is
to get students well on their way to recognizing
chord progressions and song forms. Erik Walker’s
unique use of theory along with ear training
techniques through class demonstrations, takehome CDs and online programs makes for an
enjoyable and stimulating musical experience.
Prerequisites: Knowledge of scales, key
signatures, and basic chords; Music Theory I; and/
or instructor’s consent.
Class Size: 4-8 students
Location, Day and Time:
Mission District Branch, Thursdays 7:00-8:00pm
Instructor: Erik Ian Walker
Music theory provides a language for talking about music and an understanding of

Embodiment & Expression
Tools for Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation
and Performance Enhancement
Our body is our instrument. How we use it influences the quality of our movements and the
sound we make with our voices and musical
instruments. This group class will present tools
based on the Feldenkrais® Method and BodyMindCentering® to free yourself from tension,
pain and injury, improve the quality and longevity of your musical life and help you find innovative sources for expression, composition and
improvisation. It is an inquiry into the relationship between the body and the mind through
movement, guided attention and non-verbal
dialogue. In the process, students may find improvements in breathing, tone, coordination
and technical proficiency. They may also find
that the work prevents and rehabilitates injuries.
Students should bring their instrument if they
have one and a piece of music to play or compose at the end of each class. For more information, visit: www.heartofembodiment.net;www.

Community Partnerships
CMC collaborates with numerous arts
and non-arts organizations to provide
music education both on and off-site.
These collaborations include music programming with Bethany Center Senior
Housing/Ruth’s Table, a partnership with
UCSF and the SF Department of Aging
and Adult Services through which 12
chiors will be started over a five-year
period at senior centers throughout San
Francisco, collaboration with various SF
public library branches, and work with
numerous schools.

Community Music Center
counts on your support to
make sure that our students
can continue to sing, practice, and play. Donations allow us to offer financial aid
and free programs that keep
music in reach for everyone
in our community. CMC students include children whose
families struggle to make
ends meet in our expensive
city and seniors who get by
on a modest, fixed income.
When you make a tax-deductible gift to CMC, you directly support scholarships
and financial aid that allow over 2,300 students to enjoy the highest quality
music instruction. Your donation will bring music into the life of someone who
otherwise would not be able to afford lessons.

CMC has purchased the beautiful
Victorian home next to our Mission
District Branch. Our vision is to integrate this property into a re-imagined and expanded campus that
will allow CMC to meet the growing
need for affordable and excellent
music instruction in the heart of our
community. Please contact us to set
up a tour or to see how you can help
bring this vision to reality for our
next hundred years and beyond.

Join the Founders Circle - Make the Music Last Forever
Through the years, many of our generous donors have chosen to memorialize
their support of Community Music Center with a planned or estate gift that will
ensure that the much-needed services
of CMC are available to future generations. Through a legacy gift, supporters
can often make a significant contribution that may not have been possible
during their lifetime. Legacy gifts can
include bequests of cash, insurance
proceeds, retirement accounts, real or
personal property or securities.
We invite you to make a planned gift
from your estate to CMC and join our
Founders Circle. Your gift will leave an
enduring legacy, making it possible for
CMC to teach future generations.

Concert Hall Performances, Rentals & Recordings
Performances at CMC
CMC presents music in our Mission District
branch Concert Hall throughout the year. Performances range from world class touring musicians
to performances from our esteemed faculty’s
professional groups, to student recitals. Please
check www.sfcmc.org for calendar listings.
Concert Hall Rentals
CMC’s Mission District Branch Concert Hall is available for rent to the public for music-related concerts and events, rehearsals, and sound recording.
Renovated in 2006, the concert hall is wheelchair

There is a balcony at the rear of the hall, where
there is also a sound recording booth. The auditorium seats roughly 130.
$100 - Additional tuning of the nine-foot
Steinway D grand piano (the stage piano) or the
Baldwin six-foot grand piano (the auditorium
floor piano).
Sound Recording Services
The Mission District Branch Concert Hall’s CD and
digital audio tape (DAT) recording system offers
performers the opportunity to produce highquality audio recordings. Recording options are
available to recital hall renters, pending engineer
availability. Note: The recital hall is not a soundproofed building. Recordings may pick up ambient sound.
Fees (recording engineer provided)
$185 - Recordings with a Basic Rental. The rates
include a recording engineer for three hours (preconcert set up plus concert recording) and one

tuition for group classes is reduced by 50% with
concurrent enrollment in private lessons, except

of $1.50 per lesson or class. This discount applies
to full-fee students only.
Merit scholarships for youth: A limited
number of full scholarships for private lessons are awarded to students age 18 and under based on financial need and merit (see
p.32). Juried auditions are held each May.
Comprehensive youth scholarship programs: Other scholarship programs include
Comprehensive Musicianship Program, Inner
City Young Musicians Program, and Mission District Young Musicians Program (see pages 7-8).
Discount instrument rental: Because students must have access to their own instruments, CMC offers limited discount instrument
rentals. A quarterly rental fee of $35 or $50
(depending on the rental instrument, with an
additional $25 refundable deposit) is due at the
time of rental. Instruments must be returned at
the quarter’s end unless other arrangements are

Registration Policies
New student registration: New students must
call the registrar at the branch through which they
wish to study in order to make a registration appointment. (See new student registration dates
under Academic Calendar on p. 36).
Communication about attendance is also an essential part of the teacher-student relationship. If
a student is not going to be able to attend a lesson, he or she must notify the teacher or the front
office. Teachers are not required to make up student absences. On occasion, however, with proper notification a makeup lesson may be arranged.
What to bring to registration:
–Required fees (see p.33)
–Completed Registration Form (see p.34)
–Completed Sliding Scale Application (see p.33)
–Sliding Scale documentation, if applicable
Missed lessons: Students pay tuition regardless of their attendance. Students must notify the
registrar before any absence, but this does not
exempt the student from payment. Faculty members are not required to make up missed lessons
caused by student absences. Faculty members

take place at the first lesson or class.
Current student registration: Current students
must notify the registrar at the branch at which
they are registered, during the specified dates,
that they wish to continue their lesson or class.
Students who do not do so will be dropped. (See
current student registration dates under Academic Calendar on inside back cover).
Late registration: Individuals unable to register
during new or current student registration should
contact the registrar at the branch where they
wish to study. Late registration is pro-rated and on
a space-available basis.
Leaves of absence: In cases of serious illness or
injury, a leave of absence may be arranged. Prior
approval of both the faculty member and registrar
is required. If approved, credit may be given for
two or more consecutive absences.
Discontinuation: CMC reserves the right to
discontinue a student’s enrollment at any time
for reasons including, but not limited to: poor attendance, non-payment of fees, lack of interest,
or disruptive behavior. If a student is dropped for
non-payment of fees, the student might be able
to continue the quarter by paying the unpaid balance.
Payments: Full payment is due at registration.
We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. If payment is not made,
student will be dropped immediately. In case of
financial hardship, one half of the payment due
may be paid at registration, with the balance due
by the fifth lesson or class (third for Summer Quarter). There is a $15 check return fee.
Refunds: Tuition refunds are given when lessons
or classes are canceled by CMC. A refund, minus
the first lesson or class cost plus registration fees,
may also be given if the student decides not to
continue after the first lesson or class and notifies
the Registrar at least 24 hours prior to the second
lesson. If the registrar is not notified at least 24
hours in advance, the student is responsible for
the full quarter’s tuition. $100 per week of camp
