Phonics - Moulsecoomb Primary School

Aims of the Phonics Curriculum
• To learn the phonic code that forms the basis of the English language.
• To learn to recognise each of the individual sounds.
• To know how to write each of the sounds down.
• To understand that sometimes the sounds can be written down in different ways.
• To learn how to break up a word and put it back together to read it.
• To learn how to break up a word to write it down.
• To make informed choices about which version of a sound to write down.
What is the Purpose of our Phonics Curriculum?
• To help our children gain a knowledge and understanding of the English language code.
• To help our children to become fluid and efficient readers.
• To inspire our children to become interested in words and to want to read and write.
• To read and write for a reason.
• To become proficient at reading and writing words that are unfamiliar to them.
Phonics is all about learning the individual little sounds that English can be broken down into. It’s a
bit like learning a code that once you know it, you can read or write any word that follows a regular
phonetic make up. The problem with this code is that sometimes words don’t follow the rules and
these are words that we just have to learn how to read and spell.
At Moulsecoomb Primary School we have our own system of learning these sounds. Each sound
has a picture linked with it that uses the sound and we have also added actions to them to help
children to master the code.
The sounds are not learnt in alphabetical order but in an order that allows them to quickly be able
to read and write simple words.
The order is…..
s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss, j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee,
igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ar, oi, ear, air, ure, er.
After these sounds have been learnt children will need to learn the different ways of spelling the
same sounds. Right from Nursery, children will see these sounds around school and will have been
taught all of them by the end of year 2. See the list below.
