The Colorado Fetal Care Center at the Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health occupies a full floor within the new 350,000 SF East Tower of Children’s Hospital Colorado. Adjacent to the existing neo-natal intensive care unit, the new facility is accessible by a new dedicated drop-off and entry lobby on the ground floor. The very nature of fetal services within a children’s hospital setting is unique. This new program distinguishes itself by offering comprehensive care for pregnant women and pre- and post-delivery babies, including interventional procedures, in a single location within the hospital. The administrative, clinical and facility implications of introducing adult patients into the pediatric population are vast, including the program’s impact on the complex zoning and organization of a children’s hospital and how the incremental growth needs of NICU and surgery can be accommodated. The design of the Colorado Fetal Care Center is focused on the patient and family experience within a supportive adult environment. Family amenity spaces are provided to address the needs of this high-risk patient population with extended ante-partum stays. These amenities include a family kitchen, dining, lounge, laundry and quiet spaces outside of the patient room, as well as in-room amenities and services. Patients will be cared for by a multidisciplinary team of experts, with space provided for these larger care teams. Having recently opened in November 2012, the Center has already successfully performed interventional procedures. The new Center was designed with the flexibility to allow the program to grow and change as this new science evolves, along with new technology to support it. “IT REALLY ALLOWS US TO INTEGRATE THE OBSTETRICAL, NEONATAL AND FETAL CARE IN A WAY WE’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE…WE DON’T HAVE TO SEPARATE MOM FROM BABY.” –– Dr. Timothy crombleholme, DIRECTOR, COLORADO INSTITUTE FOR MATERNAL AND FETAL HEALTH
