Last month I took my wife’s car in to the shop for a routine oil
change. When I went to pick the car up, the mechanic said that
he heard some noise in the brakes as he was doing an inspection of the car while it was on the rack. I
immediately started wondering what needed to be replaced and how much it was going to cost.
However, the mechanic then used some of my favorite “F” words to let me know that he “Found” the
problem, “Fixed” the problem, and it was something very minor, so it was “Free” – no charge.
A Chat With Pastor…
I like those “F” words and we are in a season that is filled with wonderful “F” words. This month, as we begin the
season of Epiphany, we remember the Wise Men who came to see Jesus and when they “found” Him they gave Him
gifts – “Frankincense,” Gold, and Myrrh – gifts “fit” for a king. I’m sure all of you enjoyed a variety of gifts during
Christmas, maybe you received some of your “favorite” things. I would like to thank all of you for the many gifts you
gave to the church and to others that made our Advent and Christmas season very special.
I also think of the “faith” of Mary and Joseph, as they “followed” the guidance given to them by angels in traveling
to Bethlehem, Egypt, and Nazareth to “fulfill” God’s plan to save the world through the sending of His Son. While
Mary and Joseph were “faithful” in the midst of some difficult circumstances, I think of my “failure” to live out
God’s will for my life in some very comfortable settings. However, since this “fellow” named Jesus was sent from a
loving Heavenly “Father,” lived a perfect life in my place, and died on the cross for my sins, I know that I am
“forgiven.” This means that I have a “future” with Jesus that is secured by the “forgiveness” He won for me when
He rose from the dead. What “freedom” this provides me to know that eternal life with Jesus is certain and
absolute because of Him.
As we get back to some old routines this month, I pray that you will stay “focused” on Jesus on a daily basis. After
all, I realize there are other “F” words that are often heard in daily conversations that are not appropriate. I don’t
think I need to dwell on them as I’m sure everyone is familiar with them. Therefore, as we begin a new year, I also
pray that you will “follow” Jesus wherever He leads you.
As we begin a new year, I also need to thank all of you who prepared and served meals for our Wednesday evening
“Family Nights” this past year. The meals were “fantastic” and they enable our church to grow closer through
“fellowship,” as we encourage one another and share our joys and concerns around tables at the end of the day.
Thank you, as well, to Amy Gardner and everyone in our choir who sang so beautifully for our Christmas Cantata.
I also appreciate the work done by Beth Otto and Donna Harlow in leading our Children’s Christmas Service, and
I am thankful for those who serve on our altar care group in preparing
the sanctuary for our Christmas Eve worship services.
I thank God for the great privilege of serving as your pastor and I thank
all of you for making my Christmas celebration very special. I am
anxious to find new ways of giving and serving with all of you in 2015.
In God’s Service,
Happy New Year Ladies,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas
Season. As we look to January to start a New Year, I
want to personally invite every single female member
of Holy Cross to join us in the LWML this year. If you
are unfamiliar with the LWML, or are new to our
church, the LWML is the Lutheran Women’s
Missionary League and you are already a member. We
are a group of Lutheran women within Holy Cross
who fellowship together, support one another and
most importantly, we share the Gospel through our
mission work. If you have been involved in the past
but not recently, I invite you back. We will be
planning some New events and fellowship
opportunities this year and I invite you to be a part of
it. You can be involved as little or as much as you
want, but we want you to join us.
Thank you to all who helped support the
Salvation Army Angel Tree. With your generosity, we
were able to support 80 children in Johnston County
who may not have had Christmas presents otherwise.
As always, it’s amazing to see the love poured out
from our congregation during Christmas and
throughout the entire year.
We had a great turnout for our Christmas
Luncheon at Simple Twist. Thank you to all who came
and brought your “Gifts of the Heart” food donations.
We enjoyed good food and fellowship as well as
conducted our Quarterly Meeting. At this meeting,
Linda McLoughlin graciously volunteered to serve as
Vice President for the remainder of Christie Bruns’
term. Thank you Linda! We also voted to change our
meeting times from once quarterly to once bimonthly
(or every other month). This will enable us to have
two additional meetings per year. Our meetings will
remain the second Sunday of the month after the late
service starting with February. For our next meeting
on February 8, we decided to have a “Bag” luncheon.
Bring your own bagged lunch. We have a few
volunteers who will bring desserts and drinks will be
provided. Please plan on joining us as we have a lot of
plans to make for all of our upcoming events.
Registration forms are now available for the
2015 Spring Retreat at Fort Caswell on Oak Island.
They are located on the table beneath the LWML
Page 2
bulletin board in the Narthex. Retreat dates are May 15
to May 17, 2015. The cost will be $130 with the first
payment of $65.00 being due at our next meeting on
February 8, 2015 and the remaining balance due on
March 8, 2015. We will need at least 24 women to
make this weekend retreat a success. This year, the
retreat is open to female relatives of members who
attend the retreat and who are 15 years old or older.
That means that if you have a daughter (or other female
relative) 15 years or older, they can now attend the
retreat with you. Please plan to join us even if you have
never been to a retreat before. It promises to be a funfilled weekend with bible study, fellowship with other
Lutheran women with some free time as well.
Our annual Parade of Tables is only two months
away. It is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2015.
This event is our biggest fund raiser of the year and we
need you! Find the Bible verse that speaks to you and
start planning your table now. If you feel that you
cannot host a table, please plan on attending as a guest.
The funds raised from this event go to support all of the
missions of the LWML. If you have any questions or
need more information, please contact Marilyn Castelli
or Ella McBrayer. They are still in the planning stages
so if you have any ideas or would like to help plan the
event, they can use your help.
This year, Holy Cross will host the 2015 Eastern
Zone Spring Rally. It will be held on Saturday, April
18, 2015. We will be responsible for providing a small
breakfast and lunch for the days event. We are looking
for someone to chair this event, so if you are interested,
please contact one of our board members.
Again, we have several upcoming events
planned for this spring and we invite you to join us. If
you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact
me at [email protected] or call 919-793-6833 during
evening hours.
In His Service,
Melissa deCathelineau

Sharing Our Story
"In Christ, we have obtained an inheritance..." Ephesians 1:11
If you are a parent, you know the many changes that have occurred throughout the life of
your child. You have seen them grow taller as the height-marks on the wall get nearer and nearer to
the ceiling as your child increased in age. You have heard their conversations and their ideas that
make you wonder "How did they learn that!?" You have seen their friendships develop, their faith
grow or fade, or their responsibilities become more diverse as the years have progressed.
As a child, you have felt much of the above. You have been exposed to new and different
ideas in school or among friends. You have had some friends for the entirety of your life and others only for a short season
of your life. You have felt your faith tested or strengthened, experienced different cultures and traversed your way through
different and new technology.
Though not bad, much of our lives look back on what once was - thinking about times we lived, friends we had, places
we visited and experiences throughout. The present becomes a collection of distant memories - often confined to our minds,
our thoughts and our dreams left unshared. Left unshared.
In Galatians 1, Paul pushes the Christians gathered there to look ahead as the Body of Christ. He desires that the eyes
of the Christians would see their current role in the world not so much as their personal history, but according to their
shared history in the action of Jesus upon the Cross. For this reason, Paul says: "In Christ, we have obtained an
inheritance...!" What God gives is available now and gives us courage to look into the future confidently - firmly rooted in
Jesus!
So if you are a parent, imagine your child as the age you are currently. It can be a little bit scary to do so. Imagine the
places they'll be as well as their vocation (work, family life, responsibilities, etc.) Imagine the choices they will face, the
circumstances in which they'll be placed and the people that they will come across (who will impact them, or whom they
will impact). What are you placing into their lives NOW for each of these moments? Do you look ahead and "hope" they'll
make the right choices - or are you staying near to them, sharing in their life not in an over-protective way, but one that
allows your child to know that they are not navigating life alone?
If you are a child, think about your parents as the age you are currently. This, too, can be a little bit scary! Do you
know about the choices they made - either positive or negative? Have you asked your parents about the challenges they
faced; The faith questions they've had? Have you wondered about their friendships, their work experiences, or their most
joyful moments? Do you even feel confident that you can ask them anything without being judged, creating division or
feeling awkward?
Paul writes in Galatians to a Christian people who are facing division. One of the main motivations for their division is
an unshared history. This, too, can be one of the ways in which parents and child do not connect for various reasons.
History is left unshared from parent to child, stories left untold and experiences left unspoken. Parents, much of what your
child has faced or is now facing are things that you have already faced yourself. In your shared history of life's experiences,
do you give direction in your child's life or are they left to make decisions alone?
And so, this is Paul's focus, what is to come is grounded in the story of Christ to us - His people - rehearsed, retold and
shared. It's an inheritance that God gives, made known to us, complete with forgiveness, direction, grace and peace. It is an
action in history as Jesus died upon the cross which looks forward to the day that Christ will come again- that which we do
not have to wait for, but is given fully now. Our inheritance given to us, shared with us, now!
This month, here is your challenge:
1) If you are a parent, find time to tell your child(ren) about a situation or experience in your life. It could be the story
of your wedding, an impactful mentor in your life, an experience abroad or some sort of kindness shown to you by
someone else.
2) Children: Have you ever wanted to know something about your parents? Have you ever asked them? This month,
ask your parents about their wedding, or a moment in their life that brought them great sadness or happiness. Ask
them about an impactful moment of their faith life, a church experience especially meaningful or an obscure
moment that gave them hope.
In these, a foundation will begin to be laid which will bring shared experience and knowledge of one another more
deeply, it will allow openness between parents and children as well as a unity of family story. It will give opportunities to
find out ways in which parents can pray for their children and children can pray for their parents. And these conversations
will give way to a shared-faith as gathered around the shared Word of God in the Bible.
In Christ, His People have a unified story. As His People, God gives us one another - to strengthen, encourage, pray
for and guide each other. God bless your family this month as you share your stories with one another, that these precious
moments might deepen your relationship with one another, might foster godly interactions with one another and as a child,
would give you the courage to speak openly to your parents - God's blessing to you - as you look ahead to the many
experiences in your life that will come.

Wednesdays – Beginning January 7 at 6:45pm (Dinner is served from 5:45-6:30pm)
“The Bible and Lost Books” (January 7 – February 11) – led by Pastor Bill
Learn about the production, collection, transmission, and preservation of the books of the Bible and how they came
down to us through the centuries. This study will also look at why some ancient writings failed to make the cut for
inclusion and why others, including those "gospels" found in the last century, came up short.
“How Faith Works” (January 7 – February 11)
James is one of the most practical books in the New Testament. It is often referred to as the “How To” manual for
the Christian life. James not only spells out the practical implications faith in Christ has for our lives, but he also
challenges us to put our faith into action. James is blunt and direct, and in this study we will see how real faith
produces real fruit.
Sundays – Beginning January 11 at 10:00am
“Who Am I? What Am I Doing Here?” (January 11 – February 15) – led by Pastor Tom
This study will provide honest and straight-forward answers to these twin questions. God does not leave us alone,
wondering who we are in this world and searching for the meaning of life. This study will explore what God has
revealed about life’s biggest questions and how God is ready to tell you not only who you are, but also what you
are doing here.
“The Family Project” (January 11 – March 29) – led by Kurt Miller
This study, from Focus On The Family, will help families understand their personal significance in God's great
plan, equipping them to live with an eternal perspective and model God's design for family to their peers, their
communities, and to the world around them. Thriving families will lead to thriving communities, and thriving
communities will transform the world.

baked goodies. We thank the Reese Family for
their hospitality and a fun time at their house.
The OWLs will begin the New Year with a

dishes, salads, desserts and drinks. We will be
scheduling and planning our events for the
months ahead, and we hope everyone will bring
their suggestions. We also invite our members
to bring a book you no longer need to exchange

Christmas For Kids
One of the joys that we have as Christians is to
extend the love of Jesus to all whom we meet. We
do this as the expression of Jesus' love to us, to
know others in the world and to make Jesus
known among them. One of the projects that the
Confirmation Classes have is to do just this
among people in the community of Clayton that
are experiencing need and could use an extrahand for the Christmas Season.
The Confirmation
youth gathered in
Mid-December at
Holy Cross, and
made their way to
Wal-Mart on 40/42.
Here, they met with
Freedom Biker
Church, several
Motorcycle Clubs from the area, and a few
members of Jordan Lutheran Church in Apex, NC
to be among and pray for people in the community
experiencing need. These youth joined together
with those in need in the community who were
blessed with Wal-Mart gift cards to purchase gifts
for family members and items for themselves.
After this, everyone came back to Holy Cross and
food was given (donated by Confirmation Families
and people of the community) to each of these
families. A very Special 'Thank You' to all of the
Confirmation Youth, Parents and Adults (including
BJ Johns
and Wendy
Brinkley)
who helped

Super Bowl Sub Sale
This season of Christmas and New Year (and the
days off of school) is one marked with gathering.
Gathering with friends, family, classmates and
neighbors to enjoy time together. Gathering to
play, gathering to celebrate, gathering to worship
and simply to bond with one another. Christ
Himself chose not to neglect this gathering either gathering us around each other centered on the
Promises and Forgiveness that He alone gives to us
through His Word.
On December 6th,
the High School
Youth gathered
around delicious
food, games, and a
gift-exchange for
the Youth Christmas
Party at the
DeCathelineau home
in celebration of Christmas and the wonder-filled
miracle that is the birth of Jesus into this world. At
this Christmas Party, they played Trivial Pursuit
(though answering many of the obscure questions
incorrectly), exchanged gifts, listened to Christmas
Music, and laughed A LOT! It was a wonderful
occasion to sit with one another and encourage one
another as a very small community of Jesusfollowing youth sent by God into this very diverse
world.
For not only do we gather for the sake of the fun
that we individually have, but we gather for the
sake of each other - forming deeper bonds with
each other and getting to know each other even
more fully. A very special thank you to Brad and
Melissa DeCathelineau for allowing the youth to
use their home and for providing snacks for all
who attended. A Happy New Year to all of you as
we enter into another year of carrying God's
message of His
Love into this
world not just as
individuals, but as
a collection of
God's People in
the greaterClayton
community!
