Muncie Arts and Culture District
It all started with glass. In the late 19th century the natural resources found near Muncie stimulated growth for the production
of glass. Ball Corporation, which held important patents for mass production of glass jars, had its headquarters and large
manufacturing operations here. Muncie’s rich glass heritage dots the Arts and Culture District and compliments the many arts
establishments. Historical buildings and homes still echo the Gas Boom Era of the early years. Our unique heritage is reflected
throughout the District, linked by the Muncie Arts and Culture Trail and the Indiana Glass Trail.
The Muncie Arts and Culture District encompasses four distinct quadrants with concentration of various arts and cultural
amenities, each offering a unique contribution to Muncie’s history of glass. Muncie can best be experienced by visiting each
area, chosen for its contribution of culture, history and artistic expression. Visitors are directed through the District by wayfinding signs placed along the Muncie Arts and Culture Trail which links the four areas and connects with the Cardinal Greenway
and White River Greenway.
* BALL STATE UNIVERSITY quandrant contains numerous cultural sites, including: Emens Auditorium, Muncie Symphony
Orchestra, Sursa Hall, the David Owsley Museum of Art, and Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass.

* HEEKIN PARK quandant is the historic home to several cultural sites including Five-Points Memorial Fountain, The Grace
Maring Library, Vietnam Memorial, Civil War Monument, historic cabins and the Civil Rights Walk of Fame. Heekin Park is
adjacent to the original Ball Glass factory and surrounded by the neighborhood built by the original glass workers.
Indiana Glass Trail
Delaware County embraces the Indiana Glass Trail. The trail
is a showcase for talented Hoosier artisans and glass blowers
that create magic with glass. The trail connects communities
in which the tradition and history of glass and glass artisans
can be experienced first hand. There are studios, galleries
and museums as well as festivals and workshops included
in the trail.
Fans of glass artisans, glass blowers, jar collectors, history
enthusiasts and more will find something of interest in
Delaware County relating to glass.

Midwest Restore Fest
The Midwest Restore Fest is all about historic restoration.
A selected historic home, in need of repair, is chosen each
year to be the Decorators Restoration Show House.
Decorators and restoration experts from East Central Indiana
give the home a new life and open it to the public for touring.
The festival also includes vendors such as architectural
salvage, vintage style wall coverings, antiques and repair
workshops take place as well. The home for 2013 is the
Housekeeper House which is of Early Greek Revival style
located at 703 E. Jackson Street in Muncie. Proceeds from
the festival benefit the Delaware County Historical Society.
Be sure to also attend the Old Washington Street Festival
which takes place on the same days only blocks away from
the Midwest Restore Fest.

Muncie’s Glass Heritage
In 1887, the Ball family moved its glass manufacturing
business from Buffalo, New York to Muncie. Ball Brothers
Glass Company became one of America’s best known
manufacturers of canning jars.
The Ball family purchased most of the land along the north
bank of White River Between Wheeling and Granville pikes
in 1893. The name chosen by the family for the property
was taken from a Sioux word, “mna” (pronounced mini)
which means “water,” and combined with the English word,
“tryst,” to form “Minnetrista,” or, “a gathering place by
the water.”
The origin of the cultural center dates back to 1978, when
Margaret Ball Petty wrote to her cousin Edmund F. Ball,
suggesting that the Ball Brothers Foundation provide a
museum in which to exhibit fine art.

The E. B. and Bertha C. Ball Center has been a Muncie
landmark since it was completed in 1907 by Mr. and Mrs.
E. B. Ball. For fifty years, “Nebosham,” as the house was
originally named, was the family home of Mr. and Mrs. Ball
and their children. This turn-of-the century native limestone
mansion features a charming interior highlighted by
English Tudor arches, rosewood accents and stained
glass. By appointment only.
Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass
State-of-the-art facility, named for Marilyn K. Glick, one of
Indiana’s most influential arts supporters and an avid glass
art collector. The facility features 9,254 square feet, front
lobby with glass viewing windows to view glass artists at
work, hot and cold shop, and warm shop. Visitors and
