Combine singing with schoolwork
Application deadline - Friday 9th January 2015
We are looking for boys aged between 7 and 13 with
unbroken voices and a natural aptitude and passion for
singing. Choral scholars receive signi¿cantly discounted
fees for an excellent education at Newcastle School for
Boys (NSB) - the region’s only independent boys’ school
and become choristers at St Nicholas Cathedral. At age
11 or 13, choral scholars can apply for Senior School
music scholarships.
Applicants are assessed to ensure that they meet the
School’s academic standards and undertake an audition
at the Cathedral overseen by its Director of Music,
Michael Stoddart. The School’s entrance exam and
the Cathedral audition take place in January prior to a
September entry or award.
Excellent academic and all-round education
NSB is a small school of around 400 boys in Gosforth.
Each boy is well known both as an individual and as a
learner to ensure he makes the most academic progress
possible and achieves as highly as he can.
The School develops boys and young men of excellent
character who leave with a set of skills and qualities to
support their continued success and happiness in life
beyond school. This emphasis on personal development
is supported by a rich sporting and co-curricular
programme full of opportunities.
Pastoral care is excellent. This is supported by the
smaller environment, the School’s ethos and values and
the approach and care of the School’s staff.
Formed in 2005, Newcastle School for Boys has a rich
tradition of educating boys from its founding schools:
Ascham House and Newlands.
Families are always welcome to visit and see ¿rst-hand
the excellent education NSB provides for boys.
Develop musical and life skills
Choral scholars attend the Cathedral several times
each week (including some Sundays), at Easter
and Christmas, and also take part in rehearsals and
performances with the NSB choir.
The advanced musical education, including individual
singing lessons, is entirely free and worth over £1,000
a year. Choristers even receive pocket money which
increases with experience and expertise. And it’s not all
singing - choristers enjoy a full social programme at the
Cathedral and the opportunity to join overseas choir tours.
Choristers develop not only musically, but in selfdiscipline, leadership, maturity and social skills. They
learn how to manage their time effectively and acquire
a sense of achievement experienced by few others at
such a young age. These experiences and skills stay
with Choristers and can give them a huge advantage at
school and in later life.
Choristers continue a tradition going back hundreds of
years. The music is wide-ranging with the repertoire
encompassing some of the greatest music from the 14th
century to the present day.
There is no requirement for Choral scholars to have
experience of Anglican worship or traditions, but they
need to be comfortable with the ethos of the Cathedral.

Outdoor things to do:
,t’s really important that children play outside all
year round. Daylight provides them with Vitamin D
which helps promote increased energy levels, better
moods and helps the immune system to prevent
getting colds. They only need 15 minutes a day so,
unless it’s absolutely chucking it down all day long,
don’t let them stare at a screen for hours on end.
Sledging – don’t forget to wrap up really warm and
take some snacks as it can be exhausting! Buy a
sledge before it snows so it’s not a last minute panic!
The beach – winter at the seaside is exhilarating,
you have to run round to keep warm so bring a
football, watch the waves crash (please be careful)
then go for hot chocolate or ¿sh µn’ chips.
The park – build that snowman before anyone

,t’s not just all about making a will. We’ve all seen those
adverts as we rush past giving them a nano- second

arrangements for yourself and plan for your future.
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document
allowing you to choose someone now (the attorney).
Someone, that you trust, family or friend, more than one
if you wish, to make decisions on your behalf should you
become in¿rm. Decisions relating to your property and
¿nances or your health and welfare at a time in the future
when you may be unable to make them for yourself.
,f you have a Property and Financial Affairs LPA your
attorney can access your bank accounts or dispose of
property on your behalf. Your Attorney is able to manage
your ¿nances at a time when you still have capacity to
do so but perhaps lack mobility; or at a time that you
may be incapable of dealing with such matters yourself.
This type of LPA will not enable your attorney to make
decisions regarding your personal welfare.
Unfortunately there are situations where a person
no longer has the capacity to make an LPA. ,n such
circumstances an application must be made to the Court
of Protection for a Deputyship Order. Such an order, if
granted by the Court allows for the Deputy to deal with
the property, ¿nancial affairs and any other issues the
Court directs, in respect of the person who lacks capacity.
Unfortunately, applications for Deputyship Orders can take
time for the Court to deal with and can prove costly. ,n
addition the Deputy must keep full accounts and records of
the assets and liabilities of the person to whom the order
relates and disclose all information to the Court and the
Of¿ce of the Public Guardian (OPG). The OPG are the
government body responsible for monitoring Deputyship
Orders and ensuring the person to whom they relate
is being cared for. An of¿cer of the OPG can carry out
inspections and meet the subject of the Order.
Planning for your future or that of your loved ones,
may seem too complicated, too emotional to deal
with, something that can be put off until a later date.
