We have accomplished so much so far this year and need a few new Service projects to help us work of those extra pounds we gained from our Club Holiday Parties! I created a cabinet position this year to increase the participation of Lions in Special Olympic events across our district. Lion Wilma has risen to the challenge and done a great job coordinating activities. It’s sometime hard to get service activities of the ground in the cold months of January and February. Wilma has sent details of several Special Olympics games-Be sure to encourage members of your Clubs to participate. It’s as simple as showing up to cheer on the athletes or help out with Sight and Hearing Screenings. Special Olympic Events are a great way to serve those less fortunate and get the word out that Lions Clubs are involved and active in the community. Don’t forget to bring membership pamphlets, etc.! Many Lions Clubs participated in Food Drives over the Holiday Season. I applaud those efforts that are so desperately needed. “Almost 1 billion people across the globe will go to bed hungry tonight, 200 million of them children.” (USAID). Lions have an opportunity to show the strength of our worldwide network during a special service action campaign, “Relieving the Hunger”. I encourage Lions to continue these initiatives throughout the year in District 24-A and worldwide through your contributions to Lions Clubs International Foundation. But too be sure, spring will be here before we know it. If you recall, District 24-A Lions are planning a new environmental project-to clean up Bull Run. Our historic waterway could use our attention, to keep it clean and clear for generations to come. If you have not heard about this initiative and need more information please be sure to contact our Environmental Chair, Don Leas, for details on how you Club can help-out. Contact District Chair Lion Wilma Murphy for more details. Remember the large event, Fanquest, at the Robinson Secondary School on January 17th. We will be doing vision and hearing screening at the event. Show up to cheer on the athletes and wear your Lions Shirt to show our support. Mount Vernon Evening Lions Club Sargent Mac Foundation Lions turned out in a big way at Quantico National Cemetery in early December. Approximately 50 Lions with at least 12 clubs showed up to help the Sargent Mac Foundation to place wreaths on the gravesites at the Quantico National Cemetery. We and other volunteers helped place wreaths on every gravesites. Lions supplied and served coffee and donuts to all the volunteers. We got great billing from the Foundation Officials at the event. Thanks to our District Chair Lion Ed Warzywak of the Woodbridge Lions Club for making all the arrangements. Check out more pictures on Facebook. Leo Club News Feeding the Hungry Campaign Congratulations to Dahlgren and Annandale Lions Clubs for sponsoring two new Leo Clubs, our 28th and 29th Leo Clubs. Dahlgren’s is called the Roaring Leo Club, and Annandale’s is called the St. Ambrose Leo Club. We hope for great thing from these clubs and Lions future leaders. The Colonial Forge Leo Club painted their rock at the Colonial Forge HS. There are many ideas online of different advisor is Lion Susan Schaefer projects your club can complete. If you sell citrus this time of year and donate some fruit to your local food bank or people in need, please make sure your Secretary reports that on MyLCI. Beside being helpful to fulfill a community need, it counts toward goals and awards for your club, it’s members and district level officers (Zone and Region Chairs). Multiple District News It’s not too early to start planning for State Convention, right in our District again this year, on May 15-17, 2015 at the Sheraton Premiere in Tyson’s Corner. There are some major constitution changes being proposed by the Council of Governors and clubs throughout the state. Over the past few years, the state has balanced our budget by taking funds out of surplus. That surplus balance is now dangerously low. This Council has made a policy that we will no longer balance the budget from surplus. Instead of proposing a state dues increase this year, we are proposing to split the job of State Secretary / Treasurer into two jobs. The State Treasurer will be a volunteer position. By decreasing the duties of the State Secretary, it allows flexibility to increase or reduce the hours and salary based on the dues income we receive. There will be additional proposals announced later in the year. We need your support at the State Convention to have this change approved. The Lions of District 24A delivered Thanksgiving meals to 240 service members on duty throughout the Capital area and 75 who visited the Single Marine House on the Quantico Marine Base. We had 23 volunteers from 10 clubs to help with completing this mission. We even had volunteers who were civilian employees and active duty Maries at the base helping with the project. We received over $2,000 in donations from businesses in food and other services. The Aquia Evening Lions Club contributed another $645.00. Thank you ladies! The Marines were very thankful for the meals and the fellowship from the Lions. It is a unique project, partnering with the Quantico Marine Corp Base, enhancing our Veteran Membership initiatives. We are still PLUS 17 so far this year. At the same time last year, we were MINUS 19. You have sponsored 83 new members this year vs. 67 from the last time last year. This is a great improvement that builds on the growth and improvements made last year by IPDG Mike Ryan and Past GMT Woody Woodard. Remember the Veteran Membership Initiative. Any new members who are military veterans are eligible to have the $25.00 initiation fee waived. This is only available until the end of this Lions year and an excellent way to thank them for their service to our country. Keep up the excellent work with retaining the new members and give them an orientation about your club, our district, and LCI. I challenge all current members and clubs to continue to “Ask 1” and add at least one new quality, active member this year. Time is really flying by. We are already at the middle point of the Lion year. I am very proud of all that you have done and are doing. The foundational focus of my theme is Strengthen the Pride through Service, and you have responded! You are reporting a record number of service activities. Thank you for embracing the “ASK 1” concept where every Lion has been challenged to ask at least one person to join our association. In most places we are chartering bigger and more clubs. We are trending well in membership growth, and by all indications we are doing a better job of identifying and developing leaders. We have also launched tools to help every club increase their effectiveness. But there is one major area of global concern: the number of dropped members. There is little use in recruiting new members if we let our existing members slip out the back door. In hindsight, I wish that I had put more emphasis on retention. Rather than living with regrets, I decided to do something about it. We have launched “Keep 1”—a simple concept to drive home the importance of keeping each and every one of our members actively involved. Very few Lions will ever be involved with chartering a club, and for many of our members asking someone to join is very hard. But every Lion in some way can help keep our members actively involved. It is important to welcome our members, value them, train them, encourage them, mentor them and more. There is an old saying: “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” To reach our full potential, we have to give more effort in keeping our members. As your president, I have vowed to do all that I can to Strengthen the Pride. I know that I cannot do it alone, but Together WE CAN.
