A New Year, a New You
Dietician’s Digest, vol. 1
From our dietitian, Christine Lacy
New Year, New You!!
Thinking of setting some health related goals for the New Year? Here
are a few tips to get your New Year started right!
•
•
Stay hydrated, preferably in the form of water. It's calorie free. Every living
cell is made of water so in order for them to function best, they need to be
topped off. Fluid also keeps our blood and GI system
moving so that we circulate needed nutrients and dispose of those we don't
need or that are harmful.
Eat adequate protein. Protein is part of both the body's defense and
repair mechanism against infection. Good sources of protein include: seafood,
beef, poultry, eggs, beans and peas, nuts, and seeds.
* Shoot for at least 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals that help ward off illness
and keep cells healthy.
* Aim for 2-3 servings of dairy daily. This includes: milk, yogurt, cheese, and even
ice cream! Intake of dairy is linked to helping build and maintain bone mass.
BRAIN FITNESS TIP OF THE MONTH
A good method of keeping an active mind is to refine
your hand-eye coordination. For this, you can try picking
up a new skill that requires motor skills. These skills
include activities like knitting, painting, drawing, and
assembling puzzles, to name a few!
Looking Ahead

For Lenten Devotions Submissions
Lent is just a few weeks away. We’re hoping to launch Cedarfield’s first Lenten
Devotional Booklet and we would like residents, such as you, to contribute. Stop by he
Wellness and Leisure to sign up to write a devotional or to get guidelines for contribution.
Staff will be participating as well. All submissions are due Tuesday, January
27 for the 2015 booklet. Contact Florence at 474-8853 with questions.
