Notes from George
As we approach the Holiday Season, one of the more
common things we recognize is the concept of “Lights,
Camera, Action” Now you may be confused by what I am
saying but this is the time of year when people decorate their
homes and more with a plethora of lights, action figures and
an abundance of flowers, plants and shrubs so people may
see and enjoy their efforts. So what does all this mean? And
where does the “Action” part enter?
Bronx off Pelham Parkway going west, on the north side of
the parkway. It is one house with more decorations than I
have ever seen, many are life size and move and speak and
sing. It alone is worth seeing and shooting. A little closer to
home will be a house that literally decorates for almost every
holiday and occasion. It is off Northern Blvd. and Great
Neck Road at the end of a slight hill there. It too is certainly
worth capturing.
Well, We, You, Me all of us are the action part. We are the
individuals who should be out taking pictures of these funfilled events. Get out and take many photos of the various
and unique figures and styles that people use to show their
attitudes during a holiday period. To be more specific, there
are a few locations which may be worth pursuing for those
individuals who feel like a bit of holiday spirit.
All of this is fun photography and while it may not be
competition grade (or it may be) it is definitely fun and
visually incredible. Sometimes one has to go out and do
something totally frivolous and fun and not care if a judge
will see it or if it is to be graded but done for you, just you.
Try it. It can be catching.
One is a bit out of the way but if you can car pool perhaps it
would be ok. That is the holiday lights in Bay Ridge, where
many families actually pay to have their houses decorated by
professionals. From 13th Avenue off 86th Street in Brooklyn
the sights are amazing. Another location even closer is in the

Judge for January 12, 2015:
Susan Nolan
Graduate of SUNY Brockport, Dowling College, and
SUNY Stony Brook, with 90 credits over a masters, the
majority in Education, Fine Arts, and Art History. Masters
concentration in Fine Art printmaking (Etching, Silk Screen,
and Lithography) Several purchase awards, including Syracuse
University, and Queens Community College. Taught fine arts
for 32 years in the Sachem School District, including graphic
design, and video production. After retirement joined the
Paumanok Camera Club, Photographer of the year all five
years, PFLI all star all five years (This year placed first, Super All
Stars), Winner of five 27 point medals in competition.
When evaluating an image, initial impact is of importance, as
well as how the image engages the viewer on a variety of levels.
Secondly, does photographic technique or post-processing help
the communication of the image, or get in the way. Thirdly, if
the photographer plans to continue to create this type of image,
what suggestions will lead to improvement?
My best advice to all: Create yearly personal goals that are
realistic, then pursue them. I do this each fall, and as long
as they are not created with outside input, you will end each
photographic year with personal satisfaction. Buy the best
photgraphic equipment you can afford, including a tripod. If it
means you have less, it will be easier to carry. Find a spot near
home that you can visit often, when the light is beautiful, you
will soon be rewarded with a beautuful image.
