About the cover: the passing of the levy provides us with the opportunity
to move forward with our 10-year plan. For the past two years, Lorain
County Metroparks gathered data 2,000 survey results from residents of 21
communities. The Lorain County residents outlined their wishes for the park
district into the next decade.
The Honor Roll is our way of publicly thanking individuals, families, organizations, and
corporations for their donations to the Lorain County Metro Parks–be it through volunteer
services, monetary gifts, or other. If you would like information about making a donation,
please contact the Public Information Office at (440) 458-5121.

The residents who responded told us that they wanted more walking and
hiking trails, along with expansions of existing parks. With a park in every
major community, LCMP will begin to connect parks and communities
and provide a wide diversity of recreational, environmental, health and
educational requirements to the public. We will continue to sustain safe,
well- maintained facilities, accessible to everyone. Lorain County Metro Parks
are truly yours to explore!

OPEN YEAR ‘ROUND
CABIN FEVER FUN DAY
February 16, 2015 • Noon–4 pm
Recipe for Cabin Fever: Long nights and short days mixed with snow, ice, and
wind, with just a pinch of kids inside the house too much. Blend well with
boredom and depression. The medical term for this is Seasonal Affective
Disorder. Many people in the Midwest show signs and symptoms in the
winter months.
Want to bust out of that cabin slump? Join us on a holiday for a celebration
of winter at Sandy Ridge Reservation.
Ongoing activities include: Self-guided Scavenger Hunt, Snow Games,
Campfire with S’mores, and activities inside the Johnson Wetland Center.
Paula Harding from the Greater Cleveland Siberian Husky Club will have sled
dogs on display and will hold demonstrations at 1 and 3 pm.
We’ll have snowshoe rentals from Noon-3 pm. $2 per person per hour.
Minimum of 4 inches of snow required.
WINTER DAYS
January 31, 11 am-3 pm
Vermilion River Reservation
Winter Days….a great opportunity to enjoy the season! Get outdoors
through a variety of activities including snowshoeing (pre-register in
advance) and sledding. Also enjoy many “cool” demos such as sled dogs,
ice fishing, and ice carving. In addition, take the opportunity to tour Mill
Hollow on a sleigh ride ($1 per person, 42" and under FREE). Warm up in
the cozy Carriage Barn with live music, cookies, hot beverages, primitive
cooking demos, a winter wildlife display, and more! Vendors will setup
outdoors and offer food and refreshments.
* some activities dependent on snow and/or cold temperatures
Check out Lorain County Metro Parks on Facebook to stay up-to-date on
additions to the Winter Days schedule. Also look for updates posted at
www.metroparks.cc. Questions? Contact the Carriage Barn at (440) 967-7310.
We look forward to another beautiful “Winter Days!”
IN DEPTH: THE LIFE OF OTTO SCHOEPFLE
In 1936, Otto Schoepfle purchased eight acres of land and a small house in
Birmingham. He intended to garden and landscape the property on weekends,
and make it a country home where he could someday retire. No one, including
Otto himself, knew how the garden would grow as the years passed.
In 1969, Otto Schoepfle arranged to leave his expanding garden to the Lorain
County Metro Parks. Today, we honor Otto for sharing the 70 acres and more
than 500 plant species that are Schoepfle Garden. Join us on Thursday,
February 26 at 9:30 am to witness an in-depth look at Otto and his garden.
We’ll take a look back at his life and share a colorful presentation that will
allow you to experience all four seasons at the garden, plus an extended tour
of his antique-furnished home. We’ll provide refreshments and space is limited,
so pre-registration is required. Call (440) 965-7237 for more information.

CASCADE PARK
The two iconic waterfalls at the confluence of the East and West
Branches of the Black River are two of the tallest waterfalls in
the Great Lakes Watershed. The beautiful waterfalls and rock cliffs
in Cascade Park today are the result of a relationship between
the sandstone bedrock and the running water that flows over
and through this rock to form these awesome wonders of nature.
At a time when city parks often mean more ball fields and grass,
Cascade Park is uniquely positioned to provide an area that
inspires awe in the natural wonders. Get outside this winter and
explore this park!
This year, we will develop a master plan for restoration of Cascade
Park and the project will begin soon. Would you like to help? Share
with us your stories, memories and photos of your fondest moments at Cascade Park. Send all submissions to
[email protected] or share your thoughts on Facebook.
Lorain County Metro Parks’ naturalists are very excited about programs for Cascade. During the months of
January and February we will offer snowshoe hikes on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 and 28 from 2-3:30 pm. We will
provide a limited number of snowshoes; we must have 4” of snow (optional hike if no snow). Keep a lookout
in this newsletter and online for Birding programs, along with other nature and educational programs.
