Drawing with charcoal is among the best-loved activities for many children, freeing and expanding their imaginations while also helping them to make sense of the world. This course adopts a playful approach to practical instruction, teaching children basic skills as well as the French vocabulary that goes with them. Charcoal is an ancient dry medium, which was utilized in many cultures throughout centuries. Nowadays charcoal is still highly appealing to artists. In our classroom we will explore the versatility of the charcoal. We will implement art techniques such as hatching, rubbing and lifting (erasing) into our experimentation. We will work with compressed charcoal, vine charcoal and charcoal pencil. Starting with the basics, depicting fruits and drapery, your child will conclude the class with a charcoal drawing of your home based on a photograph. Your child will time travel through historical periods while learning about important artists who produced charcoal drawings. We will investigate prehistoric cave drawings, renaissance studies, and the work of Dürer, Degas, Matisse, Picasso and contemporary artists. At the end of the school year, selected students receive summer scholarship trips to Paris or the Concordia Language Village. We caught some of the musings from a first time visitor to Paris, a modern day flâneur… Walking through the city makes me wonder…what did this particular part of the city look like during the French Revolution? Was there a guillotine in the middle of the square we are crossing? Probably, the coolest thing I did today was eating snails! They were incroyables and the sauce was like heaven. We definitely should eat snails more often! Earlier in the day, we toured the former US Embassy that was built in the 1600s. All of a sudden, I realized we were standing on the square where Robespierre, Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI were guillotined! That building has seen every historical event in Paris since it was built! If ever a building could talk… We are at the Louvre today… the paintings show real people who lived and suffered. Paintings were the only way people could capture important moments. They tell incredible stories…the painting of Napoléon crossing the Alps…how did these soldiers feel? Cold and hungry…did they miss their families? What was going through Napoleon’s mind? As the tour bus was driving along the river, I couldn’t contain myself as we passed the Eiffel Tower! It’s just so iconic. I almost jumped out of the bus! © Winter 2015 · February 2, 2015 – April 4, 2015 The Educational Outreach Program I was thinking… Wow! This city is so old! Archaeologists discovered settlements of early humans on the banks of the Seine dating back 10.000 years! We went to the Palace at Versailles… magnifique ! The gate is made of gold… awesome! No wonder the Revolution was so bloody; people were dying of hunger while the rich were living in so much luxury. I will miss this place so much. I shall return! I desire to get to know you Paris, to your very core. Paris, je t’aime ! Pedro — Von Steuben H.S.
