3 Metro areas
lead in home
price increases
Three Florida metro areas had
among the biggest increases in home
prices year over year.
The firm RealtyTrac said last week
that Lakeland, Miami and Sarasota
had among the biggest gains in home
prices from November 2013 to November of this year.
Lakeland’s median sales price increased 18 percent. Miami saw an
acceleration of 13 percent, and
Sarasota had a 12 percent increase.
However, two metro areas in
Florida were at the top of the list in
distressed sales. Distressed sales
made up around a quarter of all sales
in Miami and Jacksonville.
Distressed sales include foreclosures or when a home is sold for less
than what an owner owes on the property.
Florida man gets
life for fatal
shooting
A Florida Panhandle man has been
sentenced to life in prison for fatally
shooting another man during a fight.
An Escambia County judge sentenced 22-year-old Damarcus Jenkins
on Friday. He was convicted last
month of second-degree murder.
Authorities say Michael Harris and
his girlfriend were arguing near the
Casino Beach parking lot on
Pensacola Beach in 2013 when
Jenkins tried to intervene.
The two men started arguing and
then Jenkins pulled a gun and shot
Harris multiple times.
Jenkins’ attorney asked the judge
to consider mitigating factors, such
as the fact that both men were highly
intoxicated and that Jenkins thought
he was acting in self-defense.

WPB lawsuit cites sex slaves,
orgies and Bubba Clinton
A new lawsuit has revealed the extent of former President Clinton’s
friendship with a fundraiser who was
later jailed for having sex with an
underage prostitute.
Bill Clinton’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, who served time in 2008
for his illegal sexual partners, included
up multiple trips to the onetime
billionaire’s private island in the Caribbean where underage girls were allegedly kept as sex slaves.
The two men’s friendship, which
seems to have ended abruptly around
the time of Epstein’s arrest.
Pedophile paradise: The lawsuit
included flight records that showed
Clinton made multiple trips to
Epstein’s private island, Little St James
(pictured), between 2002 and 2005.
Women were reportedly kept there as
sex slaves
Tales of orgies and young girls being shipped to the island, called Little
St. James, have been revealed as part
of an ongoing lawsuit between Epstein
and his former lawyers Scott Rothstein
and Bradley Edwards.
It is unclear what the basis of the
suit is, but they go on to call witness
testimony from some of the frequent
guests at Epstein’s island to talk about
the wild parties that were held there in
the early 2000s.
Flight logs pinpoint Clinton’s trips
on Epstein’s jet between the years 2002
and 2005, while he was working on
his philanthropic post-presidential
career and while his wife Hillary was
a Senator for their adopted state of
New York.
‘I remember asking Jeffrey what’s
Bill Clinton doing here kind fo thing,
and he laughed it off and said well he
owes me a favor,’ one unidentified
woman said in the lawsuit, which was
filed in Palm Beach Circuit Court.
The woman went on to say how
orgies were a regular occurrence and
she recalled two young girls from New
York who were always seen around
the five-house compound but their
personal backstories were never revealed.
At least one woman on the compound was there unwillingly, as the
suit identifies a woman as Jane Doe
102.
She ‘was forced to live as one of
Epstein’s underage sex slaves for years
and was forced to have sex with...
politicians, businessmen, royalty, academicians, etc,’ the lawsuit says.
Epstein’s sexual exploits have been
documented since 2005, when a
woman in Palm Beach contacted police saying that her 14-year-old daughter had been paid $300 to massage him
and then have sex.
The claim prompted a nearly yearlong investigation that led to the eventual charge of soliciting prostitution
which came as part of a plea deal. He
spent 13 months of a 18-month sentence in jail and remains a registered
sex offender.
Several of his famous friends cut
ties- including Clinton and then-New
York Governor Eliot Spitzer who returned his campaign donations- but
not all of them: Prince Andrew reportedly stayed at Epstein’s mansion in
Man busted for
decapitating mother

Ranch Brothel in Nevada
A man has been arrested for murder
after deputies say he decapitated his
mother at the family’s Oldsmar home
on New Year’s Eve.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has charged 23-year-old Christian Jose Gomez of 1924 Sheffield
Court in Oldsmar with first-degree
murder.
Investigators responded to the home
Wednesday at 7:24 p.m. where they
found the decapitated body of the victim, who deputies say is Gomez’s
mother, 48-year-old Maria SuarezCassagne.
According to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Gomez hit his mother
over the head with an axe, then cut her
head off her in the garage and dragged
the body to the garbage outside the
home.
The Sheriff says Gomez had been
planning his mother’s murder for two
days.
According to investigators, Gomez
was angry over his mother “nagging”
to put boxes away in the attic.
Gualtieri says Gomez admitted he
put his mother’s head in a garbage can
outside the home and then attempted
to put her body in the garbage, as well,
but it was too heavy. Cassagne’s body
was found by her older son, Gomez’s
26-year-old brother, Mario Gomez.
The brother was home at the time of
the crime, but thought the noises he
heard was Gomez putting the boxes
away.
Gomez had left the home by the
time deputies arrived, but was found
riding his bike just several blocks away
Gomez
a short time later. A brief chase ensued
and Gomez was taken into custody.
Sheriff Gualtieri confirms Gomez
was diagnosed with schizophrenia and
prescribed medications, but it’s unclear if he was taking them.
A relative said that she believes
Gomez was “a good person” whose
illness overwhelmed him.
“She was a really good mother,”
the relative said of Cassagne. “And
Christian was normal until like age 20
— I think when he was diagnosed.
“It’s so confusing what happened,”
she said. “It’s scary.”
Gomez has prior arrests in Pinellas
County for loitering and prowling,
resisting officer without violence, and
disorderly conduct.
The investigation is ongoing.
Woman charged in
Dania Beach murder
The drama of his extramarital affairs is apparently just one concern for
Clinton family loyalists, as a Wall Street Journal article released today
details how
‘I’m not in the political camp; I’m in the friends camp. And the friends
camp definitely has concerns about her running,’ the former Secretary
of State’s friend Linda Bloodworth-Thomason said.
New York in 2010, months after he
was released from jail.
Clinton’s connection to Epstein,
who worked as a financier and education philanthropist before more than
40 women came forward with claims
about him being a sexual predator, has
been long-established, but the former
president was also friends with some
of Epstein’s seedy acquaintances.
The lawsuit claims that Clinton was
friends with an unnamed woman who
‘kept images of naked underage children on her computer, helped to recruit underage children for Epstein...
and photographed underage females
in sexually explicit poses’.
While he cut off ties with Epstein,
this woman’s abuses apparently did
not end their relationship as she was
reportedly one of the 400 guests at
Chelsea Clinton’s 2010 wedding.
Suspected graffiti artist busted
A man suspected of spraying graffiti on I-95 overhead signs is a real

Early Saturday morning a sheriff’s
deputy spotted a man spraying painting the Cypress Creek Road exit sign
with the letters T-D-N-O-N-3. The
spray painted
letters were
approximately fivefeet high and
completely
destroyed the
sign.
The graffiti was the
same as a
previous incident involving the same sign, according to
the sheriff’s office.
The tagger took off on foot with the
deputy on his heels.
He was spotted walking through
the Park-and-Ride lot near Northeast
62 Street and Andrews Avenue.
When he was taken into custody,
deputies reportedly found gray paint
on his hands, clothing and face.
Originally, the man gave deputies a
false name.
Deputies found his driver’s license
which identified him 34-year old Frank
Thorn.
They also found a loaded magazine
in Thorn’s pocket.
He then led them to where he
ditched his Glock .45 pistol. In the
same area, deputies also recovered the

51 years after

part found in arm
Fifty-one years ago, Arthur
Lampitt of Granite City, Illinois,
smashed his 1963 Thunderbird into
a truck. This week during surgery in
suburban St. Louis, a 7-inch turn
signal lever from that T-Bird was
removed from his left arm.
Dr. Timothy Lang removed the
lever Wednesday during a 45-minute
operation. Lampitt, now 75, is recovering at home.
The accident broke Lampitt’s hip,
drawing attention away from the
arm, which healed.
A decade or so ago, his arm set
off a metal detector at a courthouse.
An X-ray showed a slender object
the length of a pencil, but since it
caused no pain or hardship, Lampitt

to hurt for the first time.
“Everything was fine until it
started to get bigger,” Lampitt’s
wife, Betty, said. “The arm started
bulging.”
Lampitt decided to have surgery.
He initially wasn’t sure what was in
the arm. He wondered if perhaps a
medical instrument had been left
during the emergency room visit in
1963.
He unearthed a collection of old
photos of the mangled Thunderbird
taken by a friend at the scene. He
noticed the metal blinker lever was
missing from the left side of the steering column. He figured that was it,
and surgery at City Place Surgery Center in Creve Coeur, Missouri, confirmed it.
“Seven inches long,” Lang told
Betty.
“Oh, my God,” Betty said.
Lang said a protective pocket grew
around the lever.
“We see all kinds of foreign objects
like nails or pellets, but usually not
this large, usually not a turn signal
from a 1963 T-Bird,” Lang said.
“Something this large often gets infected.”
Lampitt wasn’t sure what he’d do
with the lever — maybe make a key
chain out of it.
“We’ll figure out something, I am
sure,” he said.

BSO: Child nearly
drowned while on
Oasis Of The Seas
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire
Rescue was called to Port Everglades
Saturday to transport a child with a
medical emergency while at sea.
“It had departed approximately an
hour before from Port Everglades,”
said Mike Jachles with BSO Fire Rescue. “The ship turned around and
advised our firefighters they were coming back with a patient that had been
revived.”
According to officials, the child was
aboard the Oasis of the Seas when the
child nearly drowned while in the wave
pool on the 15th deck.
The child is 4-years-old, authorities said.
Bystanders noticed him under the
water and he may have been there for up
to 10 minutes.
“A bystander noticed the child, alerted
someone who was near the wave pool.
The child was brought out of the wave
pool. Some bystanders began CPR. The
child was taken to the infirmary. That’s
where Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue
encountered the patient,” added Jachles.
Once back on land, the child was to
be transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he is in critical condition.
“The ship will not be allowed to depart until that investigation’s complete,”
said Jachles. “I will add that the ship has
fully cooperated with the investigation
so hopefully the ship can set sail here
soon.”
Shortly before 11:00 p.m. BSO completed its investigation and the ship was
allowed to set sail.

How to manage hormones
that influence weight loss
It’s as old as time: The urge to get
into better shape in the New Year.
Something about a fresh calendar year
and a clean slate beckons you to the
gym with hopes of new beginnings,
healthier living, and maybe even those
washboard abs you’ve never quite been
able to make happen.
If you’re like the millions of Americans who purchase new gym memberships in January, you may be brimming with motivation right about
now— which is great! Ride that wave
of willpower. But it’s not just what
you eat and how much you exercise
that matters; understanding your hormones and how to work with them is a
huge part of weight loss success.
Before you embark on your new
year’s weight loss plan, get to know
the three most influential hormones
that are crucial to slimming down—
and how to get them on your side.
Ghrelin
Produced in your stomach, ghrelin
is your hunger hormone. If you skip a
meal, your ghrelin levels rise and make
you ravenous, making it nearly impossible for you to resist the next food
item you see. For these reasons, skip-
ping breakfast to shave some calories
off the day is a big mistake if you’re on
the weight loss train; ghrelin is high in
the morning after you’ve fasted all
night, so you really need to fuel yourself first thing to keep it in check.
And fueling with the right food is
just as important as fueling, period: A
study published in the journal Clinical
Science showed that a high protein
meal lowers ghrelin levels significantly more than meals high in fat and
carbohydrates. So focus on a highprotein breakfast, such as casein and
whey-free protein shakes, and veggie
omelettes. And don’t stop at breakfast— aim to get at least 20 grams of
protein at lunch and dinner to keep
ghrelin low after each meal.

shortage of this hormone if your goal
is to drop a pant size or two. It’s an
appetite suppressor, telling you when
to stop eating. But a little known fact
about leptin is that this hormone’s effects in our bodies decrease with age.
The older we get, the more likely we
are to have leptin resistance, which is
when our bodies don’t respond to
leptin’s signals (so your brain doesn’t
get the message to stop eating). To
raise your levels of leptin and increase
your sensitivity to this hormone, eat a
diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and
boost your intake of foods that contain
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which
has been shown to stimulate the production of leptin. Try wild salmon,
mackerel, and sardines. Lack of sleep
also lowers leptin and increases
ghrelin, bringing on the urge to eat
more, so be sure to get at least seven
and a half hours of shuteye.
Cortisol
Stress and cortisol go hand in hand,
and cortisol and belly fat go hand in
hand. Anytime you’re faced with a
stressful situation, your body pumps
out cortisol to meet the challenge.
Cortisol encourages your body to hold
on to visceral fat— that spare tire
around your waist— and it also drives
you toward sweet and salty foods to
quell the tension you feel (they release
pleasure-inducing chemicals in the
brain).
To counteract cortisol’s fat-storing
effects, cut down on your coffee consumption and steer totally clear of it
when you’re feeling stressed. Caffeine
taps your adrenal glands to release
cortisol, which can be helpful before
an interview or big presentation since
it sharpens your focus. But when you
mix caffeine with stress, your cortisol
levels jump higher and stay high for
longer.
One study out of the University of
Oklahoma showed that consuming 2
and a half to 3 cups of coffee while
under mild stress caused cortisol to
jump 25 percent— and remain high
for 3 hours.
Another cortisol-lowering tip:
Make it a point to surround yourself
with positive people who make you
laugh! Simply anticipating a laugh has
been shown to lower cortisol levels.
Once you understand how these
three hormones work, you can make it
easier for your body to drop excess
weight, and suddenly your weight loss
quest becomes less painful for you.
Why starve if it’s just going to raise
your ghrelin levels and make it harder
to resist bad food choices? And why
not find more time for that funny friend
if she’s a secret weight loss weapon?
As you move forward with your
healthier intentions this year, the most
important thing is that you believe you
deserve to look and feel better. You
deserve that leaner body, a more nutritious diet, a healthier heart, better energy and the many other gifts that
come from making and honoring that
commitment to yourself. Only good
will flow from there.
First Ebola victim infected by bats
A team of researchers think they
may have pinpointed how the Ebola
epidemic in West Africa started - with
a small boy playing in a hollowed-out
tree where infected
bats lived.
The researchers
explored an area in
southeastern Guinea
where 2-year-old
Emile Ouamouno fell
ill a year ago and died.
Health officials believe he was the first
case in the epidemic,
which wasn't recognized until spring.
The Ebola virus
wasn't found in the
bats they tested so
they weren't able to
prove the source, the
scientists reported in
a study published
Tuesday.
But they believe the boy got Ebola
from the furry, winged creatures that
had lived in the hollow tree.
"As a scientist, I can say it's a possible scenario," said one of the study's
authors, Fabian Leendertz of the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.
An outside expert said the researchers' work was thought-provoking.
"They didn't find smoking guns"
but perhaps broadened the thinking
about what sparked the epidemic, said
Stephen Morse, a Columbia University infectious disease expert.
The Ebola epidemic is the worst in
world history, blamed for killing nearly
8,000 people across West Africa this
year, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and
Sierra Leone.
The epidemic's exact origin has
never been determined, but the virus
is thought to spread to people from
some sort of animal.
Many experts have suspected some
species of fruit bat, though some wonder if West Africa's epidemic started
through another animal - like a chimpanzee or small antelope - that was
perhaps infected by bats and then eaten
by people.
The researchers saw no signs that
Ebola had affected larger animals
around the boy's small village of
Meliandou.
But they learned that a large colony
of small, smelly bats with long tails
lived in a hollow tree near the boy's
home.
Villagers told the researchers that
the tree caught fire in March, causing
a "rain of bats" to pour out of the tree.
The bats were destroyed or gone
before the researchers arrived in midApril - a bad break for the researchers,
Leendertz said.
The researchers tested 169 bats,
including fruit bats and a few from the
species that lived in the tree. None
tested positive for Ebola, but that
doesn't disprove the hypothesis because experts think the virus may dwell
in only a small minority of bats.
The researchers are trying to col-
lect more of the bats for testing.
Also on Tuesday, Liberia's government announced it will allow families
to bury Ebola victims in a special plot
of land instead of requiring that the
bodies be cremated so as not to spread
the virus.
Ciatta Bishop, head of Liberia's
national Ebola burial team, said the
government has secured 25
acres where Ebola victims
can now be buried. More
than 2,000 suspected Ebola
victims have been cremated
since the cremation decree
was ordered at the height of
the crisis in Liberia several
months ago.
The corpses of Ebola victims are highly contagious,
and many of those who
washed or touched bodies
before the burials contracted the disease.
The cremation decree is
highly unpopular in Liberia,
where funeral traditions are
carefully followed and are
considered a sacred obligation to the deceased.
New class of synthetic
molecules mimics antibodies
A Yale University lab has crafted
the first synthetic molecules that have
both the targeting and response functions of antibodies.
The new molecules — synthetic
antibody mimics (SyAMs) — attach
themselves simultaneously to disease
cells and disease-fighting cells. The
result is a highly targeted immune response, similar to the action of natural
human antibodies.
“Unlike antibodies, however, our
molecules are synthetic organic compounds that are approximately onetwentieth the size of antibodies,” said
David A. Spiegel, a professor of chemistry at Yale whose lab developed the
molecules.
“They are unlikely to cause unwanted immune reactions due to their
structure, are thermally stable, and
have the potential to be administered
orally, just like traditional, small-molecule drugs.”
Called SyAM-Ps, they work first
by recognizing cancer cells and binding with a specific protein on their
surface. Next, they also bind with a
receptor on an immune cell. This induces a targeted response that leads to
the destruction of the cancer cell.
Spiegel said the process of synthe-
sizing and optimizing the structure of
the molecules required considerable
time and effort. “We now know that
synthetic molecules of intermediate
size possess perhaps the most important functional properties of antibodies — targeting and stimulation of
immune cells,” he said.
“It’s also noteworthy that molecules
of such a small size can bring together
two objects as enormous as cells, and
trigger a specific functional response,
entirely as a result of specific receptor
interactions,” Spiegel added.
Beyond their potential for treating
prostate cancer, SyAMs may have applications for treating other forms of
cancer, HIV and various bacterial diseases.

Hangover cure is elusive but
symptom relief fizzles and flows
Revelers who were prepared to ring
in the New Year with parties and celebrations, and those whose heads still
ringing will spend their
first waking hours of
2015 searching for
hangover relief.
Although there are
drinks, tablets and
home-made remedies, a
cure for the throbbing
headache, nausea, fatigue and thirst that can
follow a night of drinking has remained elusive.
“There are no hangover cures," said Dr.
George Koob, director
of the National Institute of Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the
National Institutes of Health.
Koob said there is evidence that
low to moderate drinking can have
beneficial health effects, but hangovers
are a symptom of a bigger problem:
excessive drinking.
"There are no medications that you
can take for a hangover," he added in
an interview, "and we’re not putting
any money into it.”
Along with increased thirst and dizziness, excessive drinking can irritate
the stomach, cause blood vessels to
dilate and lead to a drop in blood sugar
causing general weakness and tired-
ness.
There is no cure for excessive drinking but there are products ranging from
tablets and drinks to IV infusions to
relieve hangover symptoms.

'Severe' flu season
grips US, CDC doc warns
A deadly influenza strain has the
U.S. in the grip of what could develop
into a "severe" flu season, with widespread cases already reported in 36
states, a Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention expert said Tuesday.
The H3N2 strain, the most common flu virus this season, began mutating shortly after U.S. health experts
created this year's vaccine -- rendering it less effective compared to past
flu vaccines, Dr. Michael Jhung, a
medical officer with the CDC's influenza division, said. The H3N2 virus
was predominant during the 2012-13,
2007-08 and 2003-04 flu seasons, the
CDC said earlier this month.
Because it's been associated with
particularly harsh flu seasons in the
past, the CDC believes the 2014-15
season could be a "severe" one, Jhung
said.
But he cautioned that this year's flu
season -- which began in late Novem-
Food and medication
insecurity tied to
poor diabetes control
People without reliable sources of
food and medicine are more likely to
have poor control over their diabetes,
compared to those without such concerns, according to a new study.
Researchers found the likelihood
of a person
h a v i n g
poorly controlled diabetes increased by
about 39
percent for
each of the
so-called
economic
insecurities
they
reported.
“What
we found is that food and medication
are a big deal and probably account
for the bulk of it, but it doesn’t look
like there is any one thing,” said Dr.
Seth Berkowitz, the study’s lead author from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Approximately 29 million Americans - about 9 percent of the U.S.
population - have diabetes, according
to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
Type 2 is the most common form of
diabetes and is often linked to obesity.
In type 2 diabetes, the body's cells
may be resistant to the hormone insulin, or the body may not make enough
of the hormone. Insulin gives blood
sugar access to the body's cells to be
used as fuel.
People with low incomes may not
benefit as much from that increased
access, they add, because getting more
healthcare services does not mean also
having access to food, medications
and other items needed to control diabetes.
For the study, the researchers used
data collected from June 2012 through
October 2013 from 411 people with
diabetes at clinics and health centers
in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts expanded healthcare
access years before the rest of the
country.
“I think what we’re looking at in
Massachusetts is where the rest of the
country will be in a few years,”
Berkowitz said.
Most of the participants had insur-
ance, about 46 percent of the participants had uncontrolled diabetes and
about 40 percent reported some sort of
inability to get food, medicine or other
necessities.
Specifically, about 28 percent reported not
taking their
medicines
because they
couldn’t afford
the
drugs. About
14 percent
said they
couldn’t pay
their utility
bills, about
20 percent
said they
didn’t have
reliable access to food and about 11
percent said their housing situation
wasn’t stable.
Food and medication insecurities
were tied to poor control over diabetes, the researchers found.
For example, about 64 percent of
those who reported an unstable food
supply had uncontrolled diabetes, compared to about 42 percent of those
with food security.
While housing and energy insecurities were not tied to worse diabetes
control, the study found that people
with an overall greater number of insecurities had greater odds of being
less in control of their diabetes.
“I think it lets us know that even if
we - nationwide - achieve the rate of
insurance coverage in Massachusetts,
these problems will still likely exist,”
Berkowitz said.
He added that the problem is likely
beyond the healthcare system to solve,
because the new research showed
people with these insecurities were
visiting their doctors.
“You have people who are seeking
care and seeing what they have, but . .
. you’re just not getting people what
they need to stay healthy,” Berkowitz
said.
“This is sort of a policy or systemlevel issue,” he said. “I don’t think
there’s anything in the course of an
individual visit that patients or physicians are going to be able to do.”
Berkowitz added, though, that
people should let their doctors and
healthcare providers know if they are
experiencing any of these difficulties.
Aspirin and Alka-Seltzer are other
popular remedies.
In Australia, high-dose, B-vitamin
tablets have been used for
decades.
Researchers at Sun Yatsen
University
in
Guangzhou, China, found
that lemon-lime soda was
effective in cutting the
length of a hangover.
They examined 57 beverages ranging from teas,
herbal drinks and sodas.
Kevin Zraly, author of
“Windows on the World
Complete Wine Course”
said dehydration plays a
part in hangovers, so he drinks plenty
of water. “That’s why for every glass
of wine I consume, I will have two
glasses of water,” he explained.
For a more expensive option than a
water bottle, hydration clinics have
sprung up in London, Chicago, Miami
and other cities to provide intravenous
(IV) fluids.
For a fee ranging from $150 to
$250, a doctor will attach clients to an
IV containing saline solution with electrolytes, Vitamin B supplements and
other formulations to help them recover from hangovers and jet lag.
ber and is expected to continue through
April -- won't be "terribly severe."
"We're seeing things that we see
every year," Jhung said. "We're not
seeing dramatically higher levels of
flu activity than we see every year."
The CDC says that those at high
risk from influenza include children
younger than 5 years (especially those
younger than 2 years); adults 65 years
and older; pregnant women; and people
with certain chronic health conditions
such as asthma, diabetes, heart or lung
disease, and kidney disease.
So far, the CDC has recorded 15
flu-related deaths in children across
the U.S. this season, though Jhung
said it's too soon to make comparisons
to past years. Overall, there were 109
flu-related deaths in kids last year, and
171 in the 2012-13 season. There were
more hospitalizations so far this year
compared to the same time in the previous two seasons, however.
The CDC does not compile similar
data for flu-related deaths in adults.
Jhung said that because this year's
vaccine might not be as effective as
that of past years, people at high risk
from the flu, including the elderly,
young children and people with underlying chronic medical conditions
should obtain flu anti-virals.
And he said Americans who haven't
gotten the vaccine yet should get it,
adding that only 40 percent of people
who the CDC believes should get vaccinated have done so thus far.
"We're not even halfway through
the flu season," he said. "It's certainly
not too late to get vaccinated."
Majority of
Americans support
menu labeling
More than half of Americans say
they already have enough information at restaurants to decide whether
they are making a healthy purchase.
But they want even more.
According to an Associated PressGfK poll, most Americans favor labeling calories on menus in fast food
and sit-down restaurants. Most favor
labels for prepared foods in the grocery store, too.
The poll was conducted a little more
than a week after the Food and Drug
Administration announced new rules
that will require restaurants and other
establishments that sell prepared foods
and have 20 or more locations to post
the calorie content of food "clearly
and conspicuously" on their menus,
menu boards and displays. Companies will have until November 2015 to
comply.
The menu labels were required by
Congress as part of health overhaul in
2010. The FDA has said they are just
one way to combat obesity, since
Americans eat and drink about onethird of their calories away from home.

NASA's Kepler space telescope is
discovering alien planets again.
The prolific spacecraft has spotted
its first new alien planet since being
hobbled by a malfunction in May 2013,
researchers announced Dec. 18. The
newly discovered world, called HIP
116454b, is a "super Earth" about 2.5
times larger than our home planet. It
lies 180 light-years from Earth, in the
constellation Pisces — close enough
to be studied by other instruments,
scientists said.
"Like a phoenix rising from the
ashes, Kepler has been reborn and is
continuing to make discoveries," study
lead author Andrew Vanderburg, of
the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics (CfA), said in a statement. "Even better, the planet it found
is ripe for follow-up studies."
Kepler launched in March 2009, on
a 3.5-year mission to determine how
frequently Earth-like planets occur
around the Milky Way galaxy.
The spacecraft has been incredibly
successful to date, finding nearly 1,000
confirmed planets — more than half
of all known alien worlds — along
with about 3,200 other "candidates,"
the vast majority of which should turn
out to be the real deal.
The spacecraft finds planets by the
"transit method," watching for the telltale dimming caused when a world
cross the face of, or transits, its parent
star from Kepler's perspective. Such
work requires incredibly precise pointing — an ability the spacecraft lost in
May 2013, when the second of its four

New Contribution Limits Make
401(k) Plans Even More Attractive
If you are interested in saving for retirement, here’s some good news: For
2015, the IRS has raised the maximum contribution limits for 401(k) plans from
$17,500 to $18,000. And if you’re 50 or older, you can put in an extra $6,000,
up from $5,500 in 2014.
These same limits also apply to 403(b) plans, for employees of public
schools and nonprofit organizations, and to 457(b) plans, for employees of state
and local governments and other governmental agencies, such as park boards
and water districts. So, in other words, a lot of workers have gotten a “raise” in
their ability to contribute to tax-advantaged retirement plans.
Although you may not think you will ever contribute the maximum amount
to your retirement plan, you may still benefit from making small increases each
year. Unfortunately, many people don’t do this. In fact, approximately 30
percent of eligible workers don’t even participate in their employer’s 401(k)type plan, according to the Employee Benefits Security Administration, an
agency of the U.S. Department of Labor. And the median savings rate for these
plans is just six percent of eligible income, with only 22 percent of employees
contributing more than 10 percent of their pay, according to a recent report by
Vanguard, an investment management company.
In any case, you do have some pretty strong motivations to put in as much as
you can possibly afford. First of all, your 401(k) earnings grow on a taxdeferred basis, which means your money has more growth potential than it
would if it were placed in an account on which you paid taxes every year.
Eventually, though, you will be taxed on your withdrawals, but by the time you
start taking out money, presumably in retirement, you might be in a lower tax
bracket.
But you can also get a more immediate tax-related benefit from contributing
as much as you can to your 401(k). Consider this hypothetical example.
Suppose that you are in the 28 percent tax bracket. For every dollar you earn,
you must pay 28 cents in taxes (excluding state and other taxes), leaving you 72
cents to spend as you choose. But if you put that same dollar into your 401(k),
which is typically funded with pre-tax dollars, you will reduce your taxable
income by one dollar — which means that if you did contribute the full $18,000,
you’d save $5,040 in federal income taxes. Your particular tax situation will
likely be impacted by other factors, but you’d have that $18,000 working for
you in whatever investments you have chosen within your 401(k) plan. If you
kept contributing the maximum each year, you will be giving yourself more
potential for a sizable fund for your retirement years.
Even if you couldn’t afford to “max out” on your 401(k), you should, at the
very least, contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered.
(A common match is 50 cents per dollar, up to six percent of your pay.) Your
Human Resources department can tell you how much you need to contribute to
get the greatest match, so if you haven’t had that conversation yet, don’t put it
off.
As we’ve seen, investing in your 401(k) is a good retirement strategy — you
get tax benefits and the chance to build retirement savings. And with the
contribution limit increasing, you’ve got the chance for more savings in the
future.

Woman faked terminal brain

The Utah woman allegedly faked

thousands of dollars for her alleged
treatment.
Police say Lesley Jensen, a waitress in Nibley, Utah, raised over $3,000
in a matter of days last month on her
GoFundMe account to help treat grade
4 gliobastoma, an aggressive form of
brain cancer, which she said she had.
She also allegedly raised money
through a local crowdfunding website,
Cache County Cares for Cancer, and
through donations from coworkers
through the Cache Valley for Hope
Cancer Foundation.
“Lesley went through a series of
efforts to legitimize her claims of cancer, which included forged documents,” police Chief Gary Jesen, of
the Logan Police Department, said.
The Cache Valley for Hope Cancer
Foundation posted a statement on its
website, noting that it is cooperating
with the police department’s investigation.
“While we wait for that investigation to be completed, however, we
already have begun our own internal
examination of the policies and procedures in place that have worked so
well to help hundreds of people in our
community,” the organization wrote
in a recent statement.
“We are looking closely at all the
protocols we have in place, and we
will make any changes necessary to
ensure that oversight is meticulous,
comprehensive and completely open
to public scrutiny.”
Jensen has been charged with five
counts of suspected fraud, five counts
of communications fraud and four
counts of forgery.
Jensen’s parents reported her missing in December. Police found her in a
remote mountainous area of Cache
Valley, Utah.

HIP 116454b is about 20,000 miles
wide and is 12 times more massive
than Earth, scientists said. The planet's
density suggests that it is either primarily covered by water or is a "mini
Neptune" with a large, thick atmosphere.
HIP 116454b lies just 8.4 million
miles from its host star, an "orange
dwarf" slightly smaller and cooler than
the sun, and completes one orbit every
9.1 days.
The close-orbiting planet is too hot
to host life as we know it, researchers
said.
The planet's relative proximity to
Earth means it will likely attract further attention in the future.
"HIP 116454b will be a top target
for telescopes on the ground and in
space," said study co-author John
Johnson, of Harvard University and
the CfA. The new study has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.
While HIP 116454b is the first
planet spotted by Kepler in its current
state, it isn't the first world to be confirmed in the wake of the May 2013
glitch. Many other discoveries have
rolled in since then, as researchers
work to validate the trove of planet
candidates Kepler detected during its
prime mission.
New law requires cruise lines
to publicize all crimes onboard
Cruise lines will now be mandated
by law to publicize and provide details
on all crimes committed on their ships.
A new
provision of
the Coast
Guard reauthorization
bill, signed
into law
Dec. 18,
also stipulates that cruise companies post information about crimes that are alleged
or under current investigation according to reports. The Department of
Transportation will host a website to
be updated quarterly where consumers can check out details of the reported crimes including names of the
perpetrators, both passenger and crew
member offenders.
Previously, the Coast Guard was
held responsible for retaining and updated data about on ship crime, but
only information about closed cases
was available.
Cruise Lines International Association claims the rule is unnecessary and
redundant—alleging that all cruise
companies report crimes committed
on their own websites.
"CLIA's position is that the new
provision is unnecessary, because it
largely duplicates information already
available to the
public, which
shows that
crime is rare on
cruise ships
and a fraction
of corresponding crime rates on land,"
the association stated in a recent press
release.
But Senator Jay Rockefeller (DWV) says cruise lines have not been
honest about reporting previous crime
history and has been pushing for the
passage of an updated law for two
years. Recent reports indicate that
hundreds of crimes committed onboard
have gone unreported in recent years.
The U.S. government has also addressed other issues of cruise line
safety passing the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act which requires
lines to ensure all cabin doors with
peepholes, outfit ship railing that are
at least 3 and a half feet tall, among
other provisions.

reach a post-recession high in December of 87.4, the highest level since
February 2007, according to a monthly
University of Florida survey.
“We had expected this slight increase in consumer sentiment,” said
Chris McCarty, director of UF’s Survey Research Center in the Bureau of
Economic and Business Research, or
BEBR. ”With the mid-term elections
behind us, the passage of a federal
budget and an improving economic
climate in Florida, consumers are more
optimistic.”
Four of the five components composing the index increased while one
decreased. “Three of the five were at
post-recession highs,” McCarty said.
Survey-takers’ overall judgment
that their personal finances are better
now than they were a year ago fell 3.5
points to 72.5. However, they are optimistic about the future. Their expectation for doing better financially a
year from now rose four points to 86.
Respondents also have confidence
in U.S. economic conditions. Their
faith in the national economy for the
next year went up 1.3 points to 87.3,
while their expectations for its performance over the next five years rose
1.8 points to 86.8.
They also expressed a 3.4-point rise
in confidence to 104.4 when asked
whether now is a good time to buy a
big-ticket item, such as a washing
machine.
Good news about jobs is fueling
some of the current optimism. The
state’s employment situation improved
again in November with a decline of
two-tenths of a percent in unemployment, which now stands at 5.8 percent, matching the U.S. unemployment figure. This drop is significant
“since most economists consider the
natural level of unemployment between 4 and 5 percent,” McCarty said.
“The labor force grew marginally
by 1,000, and labor force participation
remained at historically low level of
60.5 percent,” McCarty said. “Many
economists are puzzled by the low
participation rate, given the recovery
and the massive monetary intervention on the part of the Federal Reserve. One driver of this is Baby
Boomers retiring, sometimes early.
The question is, how many workers
will re-enter the workforce one the
economy takes off?”
The economic sector in Florida
showing the most growth in new jobs
is trade, transportation and utilities --
by the end of the month with the Dow
hitting 18,000 for the first time. Another main driver of the rise in confi-
a broad category that includes retail
trade. This category has increased, as
has leisure and hospitality, replacing
construction and manufacturing jobs
lost during the recession.
Florida’s housing market, meanwhile, has remained stable with the
median price for a single-family home
falling by $1,000 to $176,000. Home
mortgage rates are relatively unchanged with the 30-year rate hovering around 4 percent.
Stock market prices, after declining in the middle of December, climbed
dence is the continued decline in gas
prices, which have fallen to an average of $2.56 a gallon across Florida, a
drop of nearly 25 cents in a month.
“For many Floridians this represents an enormous savings,” McCarty
said.
UF’s BEBR economists expect a
modest rise in consumer sentiment and
a favorable economy will help boost
holiday sales.
“So far, the data seem to suggest
that holiday sales will surpass last
year’s,” McCarty said, “but perhaps
not by the 4.1 percent forecast by the
National Retail Federation.”
McCarty noted that calculations for
the economic impact of the holiday
season include data from the entire
month of December to factor in preand post-holiday sales. The key question is whether Florida’s newfound
optimism will carry over into the New
Year.
“There is reason to believe it will,
at least until mid-year,” McCarty said.
“The recent release of national consumer sentiment from the University
of Michigan unexpectedly rose to 93.6,
more than six points higher than
Florida. Meanwhile, U.S. GDP for the
third quarter rose 5 percent in large
part due to a rise in personal consumption. This should carry over into
Florida consumer sentiment next
month. The main drag on consumer
sentiment is the prospect of a Federal
Reserve rate hike mid-year, which
seems increasingly likely given the
recent positive economic reports.”
Conducted Dec. 1-21, the UF study
reflects the responses of 426 individuals, representing a demographic crosssection of Florida.
The index used by UF researchers
is benchmarked to 1966, which means
a value of 100 represents the same
level of confidence for that year. The
lowest index possible is a 2; the highest is 150.

More than 100
same sex
couples wed
in Broward
More than 100 couples made history in Broward County overnight
as they were the first to wed legally
as same-sex couples.
Same sex couples began arriving
at the Broward County Courthouse
Monday night to celebrate this momentous occasion in their lives. They
grabbed a number, took a seat in the
courthouse jury room and prepared
to be wed.
After the county began issuing
marriage licenses at 12:01 a.m., a
total of 106 couples tied the knot in
two group ceremonies.
Robert Rhoads and Michael
Zemblidge, together for 30 years,
said their vows in front of fellow
churchgoers at Sunshine Cathedral
Tuesday.
Rhoads and Zemblidge were one
of 106 couples who received their
marriage license this morning at the
Broward County courthouse.
“It wasn’t even on our radar
screens that this would ever become
a reality and here we are,” Rhoads
said.
“It means we’re equal,” said
Zemblidge. “We have equal rights
with everybody else. We have the
same protection.”
The ministers at the predominantly LGBT church have officiated
same-sex ceremonies for years, but
they said it’s a joy for the union to
be legally recognized by the State of
Florida as well.
“There are lots of things that make
a relationship sacred and the gender
identities of the people are not in the
mix. What makes a relationship sacred is love and th 27th state has
become the 36th state to recognize
that,” said Minister Durrell Watkins.
Five group weddings took place,
the first one was held at 2 AM.
“I feel amazing, it’s great, I
couldn’t be happier,” said David
Currie who wed partner Aaron
Woodard.
“I just feel so legitimized. I feel
so in love and so happy that we can
share and be part of something so
much bigger than just us,” said
Woodard.
One couple waited nearly five decades to be married.
“It means recognition to the whole
world. It means equality. It means
we’re no different than anybody else
who’s in love and wants to get married,” said Roberta Marpet.
“In the course of the history of
the struggles we’ve been having, this
really feels like a day that’s magnificent and unique,” said new bride
Arlene Louis.
U-S District Judge Robert Hinkle
used a lawsuit, filed on behalf of
two north Florida same-sex couples,
as the basis for his August 21st ruling that the state’s same-sex marriage ban — overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2008 — was
unconstitutional. Hinkle stayed his
ruling until Tuesday, January 6th.
After many legal twists and turns,
his ruling stood and paved the road
for equality in the Sunshine State.
“It’s been hurtful not being able
and somebody stopping it, putting a
hold, putting a stay, arguing it’s not
normal. It’s been very hurtful,” said
Tammy Lopez.
The Broward County Courthouse
will have extended hours, open from
8 a.m. to 7 p.m., until further notice.
Rick Scott
sworn in for
second term
Scott promises job
creation, business
friendly climate
Gov. Rick Scott is beginning his
second term with the same promise
he made when he took office four
years ago -- to create jobs by making Florida more business-friendly.
Scott officially began his second
term Tuesday during his inauguration ceremony on the steps of the
old Capitol building in Tallahassee.
The Republican governor touched
on creating jobs and making Florida
a top destination for businesses.
Focus of Scott's inauguration
speech expected to be jobs
In his prepared speech, Scott said
he wants to continue limiting the
size of government and lowering
taxes.
"I know there is a great temptation in government to think that you
can spend people’s money better
than they can," Scott said. "But, if
that were true, more than 1 million
people would not have left New York
and Illinois over the past 20 years
for Florida and other lower-tax
states."
Scott also said he plans to travel
the country in an effort to get more
people to move to Florida.
"I have a message today to the
people of New York, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania and others:
Move to Florida," Scott said. "We
want you to keep more of the money
you make because we understand
it's your money. We want your businesses to grow and succeed."
Scott beat Republican-turnedDemocrat former Gov. Charlie Crist
in November by 1 percentage point.

A couple accused of shoplifting

after their arrest, according to the

G e r a l d
Moultrie
Moultrie, 24,
appeared before a Broward County
judge Tuesday morning on grand
theft charges.
According to the arrest reports,
Hope and Moultrie stole more than
$600 worth of tools and accessories
from
the
Walmart.
BSO deputies said the
couple failed
to tell them
t h a t H o p e ’s
children —
ages 2, 5 and 7
— were waitHope
ing for them in
the car.
Hope, who is pregnant, and
Moultrie were arrested about 7 p.m.
Monday, but the kids weren’t discovered until about 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Judge John Hurley released Hope
on her own recognizance, but she
could soon be back in jail to face
new charges.
The children were placed in the
care of relatives.
Judge: Florida’s
health care for
needy kids
violates U.S. laws
A federal judge has ruled that
Florida’s health care system for impoverished and disabled children
violates several U.S. laws.
In a ruling Wednesday, U.S. Circuit Judge Adalberto Jordan said
lawmakers had for years set the
state’s Medicaid budget at an artificially low level, causing pediatricians and other specialists for children to opt out of the insurance program for the needy.
Jordan said that amounted to rationing of care and exacerbated a
shortage of pediatricians, particularly in rural areas.
“This is a great day for the children in this state,” said Dr. Louis B.
St. Petery, a Tallahassee pediatrician who is executive vice president
of the Florida Pediatric Society and
helped spearhead a 2005 lawsuit
against Florida’s Department of
Health, Department of Children and
Families and the Agency for Health
Care Administration.
“This action was taken because
we found that children weren’t being treated properly if they were on
Medicaid. Our position as pediatricians is that children do not choose
their parents. They don’t have a
choice to be born into a rich family
or a poor family,” St. Petery said.
On behalf of the state agencies
named in the lawsuit, the Agency
for Health Care Administration issued a statement Wednesday responding to Jordan’s ruling: “The
Judge’s outdated observations pertain to a Medicaid program that no
longer exists. Florida’s new Statewide Medicaid Managed Care program is cost-effective and a working success.”
Enrollment in the Medicaid program increased from 1.2 million in
2005 to 1.7 million in 2011, but the
number of pediatricians did not rise
at all, Jordan said.
The judge found that almost 80
percent of children enrolled in the
Medicaid program “are getting no
dental services at all.”
He also said Florida health regulators were leaving a third of the
state’s children on Medicaid with
no preventative medical care despite
federal legal requirements, and they
sometimes switched children from
one Medicaid provider to another
“without their parents’ knowledge
or consent.”
The number of needy Florida children able to get a potentially lifesaving blood screening for lead is
“extremely low, notwithstanding the
fact that part of Florida has an aging
housing stock, which means children are more likely exposed to leadbased paint,” Jordan ruled.
Jordan said he would set a hearing later this month to determine
how to proceed with the state toward a resolution.
The lawyer who litigated the lawsuit on behalf of a group of pediatricians, dentists and nine children said
their victory depends on whether
the Legislature and Gov. Rick Scott
set aside enough money to improve
medical and dental care for needy
children.
Because the federal government
will match each dollar the state
spends, Florida would need to appropriate about $200 million to fix
the Medicaid program, he said.
Weird Florida 2014: Fangate,
naked crooks and Satan
Florida’s year in news included a
90-year-old man arrested for feeding
the homeless and a “Catholic Warrior”
damaging a Satanic holiday display in
the Capitol. But what else would you
expect from a state where the two
leading candidates for governor held
up a live televised debate over a small
electric fan?
Florida had the nation laughing for
a few days at what was dubbed
“Fangate” after Gov. Rick Scott
showed up on stage seven minutes late
at a debate after a dispute over the fan
former Gov. Charlie Crist brought to
the event, leaving the moderator perplexed.
Even before the debate, the election had a weird twist when a candidate who received 16,761 votes in the
Republican primary against Scott was
charged with fabricating $182,080 in
donations, or basically all of them, in
a scheme to get matching campaigns
from the state.
But that’s Florida in 2014 (or any
other year), a state where people will
stick just about anything in their pants
– if they’re even wearing them at all.
Eliot Kleinberg, a Palm Beach Post
reporter who is the original weird
Florida archivist in what now seems to
be a popular trend, says he often issues the challenge to anyone to prove
another state is weirder and he’s never
lost an argument.
“The world has come to acknowledge Florida’s weirdness. It is no
longer a debate,” said Kleinberg, who
published “Weird Florida” in 1998 and
“Weird Florida II – A State of Shock”
in 2006. He also created a Weird
Florida Facebook page that keeps a
running tab on strange news that has
more than 227,000 “likes.”
“People in Florida have come to
accept the weirdness as part of the
normal activity,” he said. “Justin
Bieber could have gotten arrested for
drag racing in California, but he came
all the way to Miami Beach.”
Even Seth Myers used his “Late
Night” show to create a spoof game
show called “Fake or Florida” to highlight its strange news.
This is the state where the U.S.
Coast Guard had to rescue a man who
tried to “run” 1,033 miles from Florida
to Bermuda in a giant plastic bubble.
He fell about 963 miles short.
It’s the state where lottery officials
promoted the fact that they gave a
sexual predator $3 million – until they
realized he was a sexual predator, at
which point they quickly removed the
photo of him holding a big check from
their website.
It’s the state where a blind woman
sued the nudist community where she
lives claiming she was harassed about
the size of her service dog.
It’s the state where a Tampa Bay
area family of four was hospitalized
after eating a bottom round roast laced
with LSD and came out of the hospital
a family of five after the mother gave
birth to a boy while being treated for
the hallucinogenic.
It’s the state where the annual
Chumuckla Redneck Christmas Parade was canceled because – big surprise – attendees kept drinking too
much in previous years.
And it’s the state where a woman
wearing a Catholic Warrior shirt was
charged with criminal mischief after
damaging a Satanic Temple holiday
display at the Capitol. A security camera picked up the offense.
Which is different than the tantrum
picked up by a Tampa-area
McDonald’s security camera: a woman
walking behind the counter wearing
nothing but a thong overturning equipment, throwing food, and eating ice
cream and French fries.
Three naked men were caught on a
security camera breaking into a Bonita
Springs restaurant and stealing 60
hamburgers, three pounds of bacon,
three red peppers and a paddleboard.
Even when Floridians kept their
pants on, they stuffed odd things in
them, especially in DeLand, where a
woman was charged with stealing
seven frozen lobster tails she stuffed
down her pants and a Wal-Mart security guard caught a man with two packages of cow tongue in his pants.
There was also a man in Port St.
Lucie who stole a chain saw by sticking it in his pants.
That wasn’t the only dangerous
thing found in people’s pants. A corrections officer reaching for cash at a
Fort Lauderdale restaurant accidently
fired his gun. The bullet shattered when
it hit the floor and fragments hit a
dozen people. The restaurant’s name?
Shooters.
TSA seized 18-tons of
prohibited items at FTL
As the year wraps up and traveling
is in full swing, airport officials want
to remind travelers what, and what not
to, pack inside carry-ons to avoid having your items seized.
“I had a pair of scissors once and a
cigar cutter,” said Joe Averbach.
Mishaka Brown got caught with
banned fruit.
“I was coming though and totally
forgot about it. I was told that I had it
there and they’re listening to my story
and I was fined,” recalled Brown.
That’s minor compared to all this
stuff the Transportation Security Administration seized in Fort Lauderdale
this year.
“One of the items that can never go
in your checked or carry on is a grenade,” said Kari Koshetz with the TSA.
“It may seem obvious, but every
month, somewhere in the country,
someone brings a grenade and it possibly causes an evacuation.”
More than 1.5 million travelers are
expected to fly in and out of Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International
Airport during the holiday season—
which runs through January 5th, the
busiest day expected to be Sunday.
In 2014, a total of 36,000 pounds of
prohibited items were collected at FLL
checkpoints including 48 guns – four
this week alone.
“The typical excuse for that is ‘I
forgot’,” said BSO Captain Rou
Liddicott. “Well ‘I forgot’ is not acceptable. Check your bag, theh check
it again. It’s hard to miss a firearm.”
Airport officials showed off a box
Tuesday filled with items collected in
just the last three weeks. They’re items
you may not realize don’t belong in
your carry on.
“Your standard tools, screwdrivers,” said Richard Pryor from the
Broward Aviation Department.
“Obviously box cutters are not permitted or dive knives,” he said while
digging through the items in the box.
In case you’re not sure, leave that
machete behind, along with the brass
knuckles, even the ones built into a
fancy clutch.
