This Week: Travelling to the Air Force Open
Where: Cadet Field House in USAF Academy, Colo.
When: January 9, 2015
new mexico opens 2015 season at Air Force Open
The Lobo track and field team is sending a handful of athletes to the Air Force Collegiate Open
Friday as the Lobos look to capture some strong marks to start the young 2015 season.
While the home-opening Lobo Collegiate Open is still over two weeks aways on Jan. 24, some of
the Lobos’ jumpers, sprinters and hurdlers are ready to open the season at the Cadet Field House
on the campus of the Air Force Academy.
Air Force was kind to the Lobos the last time UNM ventured to Colorado Springs, where both the
men and women won the 2014 Mountain West team titles for the program’s first-ever title sweep.
For the women, 2014 MW long jump champion Aasha Marler is heading back to where she won her
title, with Jannell Hadnot debuting in her speciality, the triple jump.
Casey Dowling and Kyra Mohns, a pair a multi-event athletes, take aim in the 60-meter hurdles and
the high jump, while Samantha Bowe opens in the 60 hurdles and shot put. Pole vaulters Annie
Stirling — the 2014 MW runner-up in the event — and Katherine Whiting are also making their
season debuts.
Marler also leads a trio of Lobos in the 60-meter dash, alongside Peri Moran and Erynn Caldwell.
Holly Van Grinsven in the 60 hurdles rounds out the Lobo women competing.
On the men’s side, Yannick Roggatz is opening in the 60 hurdles and long jump, while multi athletes
Beau Clafton (60 hurdles and shot put) and Daniel Lam (pole vault and shot put) are making their
Lobo debuts. Ridge Jones, Carlos Wiggins and Allan Hamilton complete the UNM men competing,
as they compete in the 60.
New Mexico men 27th in USTFCCCA Preseason ranks
After a winning the Mountain West’s first “Triple Crown” in 2014, the Lobo men proved they have
some elite talent. And with a handful of their top athletes returning, the New Mexico men were
rewarded with a rank of 27th (30.85 points) in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association preseason computer rankings released Jan. 6.
The ranks are determined by computing athlete’s best marks from the 2014 indoor season, which
are presented as point totals. The New Mexico men were led by Django Lovett, Elmar Engholm,
Adam Bitchell and Warrick Campbell, with Ridge Jones, Jake Shelley and Yannick Roggatz
also contributing to the men’s position.
It’s the highest preseason ranking for the men since 2013, when they also ranked 27th. New Mexico
spent the entire 2014 indoor season in the top 42, with a preseason rank of 38th.
The men are ranked just behind fellow Mountain West member Air Force (31.16 points) and are a
mere 0.65 points outside of the top 25.
The Lobo women are tabbed 82nd (2.55 points) in the preseason rankings, their highest preseason
rank since 2013 (73rd). Jannell Hadnot, Aasha Marler, Sam Bowe and Yeshemabet Turner
contributed to the women’s ranks.

Gone are mile talents Charlotte Arter
and Chloe Anderson. Looking to fill
the void left by the All-Americans are
Tamara Armoush, Nicole Roberts,
Calli Thackery, Nicola Hood, Sophie
Connor and Emily Hosker-Thornhill.
In the longer distances, the Lobos can
turn to Harvard transfer Emily Reese,
Heleene Tambet and Anna Burton, all
of whom have superb credentials in the
5,000 or 10,000.
Elligibility concerns cloud the availability
of the immensely talented Sammy Silva
and Amber Zimmerman, while the
youthful and ultra-skilled NCAA Cross
Country All-American Alice Wright has
yet to compete on the track for the Lobos.
Jumps and pole vault
•
•
Arguably the Lobos’ strong suit, Aasha
Marler, Yeshemebet Turner and Jannell
Hadnot can all vie for conference crowns
in the horizontal jumps. With more
improvement, NCAA berths aren’t off the
table, either for this group.
Three of the Lobos’ top four vaulter
from 2014—including 2014 MW Indoor
pole vault champ Margo Tucker—have
graduated, but Annie Stirling leads a
group capable of clearing great heights.
Alisa Soderberg is probably the most
talented, but is coming off of injury, while
Katherine Whiting and Morgan Smith
are freshman with tremendous upside.

2015 New Mexico Track Field • 2
The Lobos return just two short sprinters,
Peri Moran and Brittany Myricks, but
both are capable of making noise in the
conference race, along with freshman
Erynn Caldwell.
Haley Sanner came on strong for the
Lobos in the 400 at the end of the indoor
season, and seized silver at the 2014
MW Outdoor Championships.
Hannah Riker-Urrutia, Zoe Howell,
Lucretia Vigil and Ariel Burch also
have talent in the quartermile, and can
comprise a formidable 4x400 relay team.
New Mexico’s combined events success
lie on the shoulders of Samantha Bowe
and Holly Van Grinsven. Bowe is poised
for a breakout year as a senior, while Van
Grinsven has split her time between the
sprints/hurdles and the multis. Casey
Dowling is a new face, moving from the
jump to the multis.
Prep stanout Kyra Mohns rolled the
hurdles and the jumps as a high schooler,
and is tabbed to take up the multis.
Already skilled across the board, she
could be steal for the Lobos.
Probably the smallest contingent, UNM
has a pair of local prepsters, including
Amaris Blount and Allison Mady.

Men’s Roster
Sprints, hurdles and relay
•
•
•
Footballer Ridge Jones, coming off of
a stellar 2014 indoor, has the potential
for some of the fastest times during the
Franklin era. Carlos Wiggins, another
football player, can also notch quick
times, and UK transplant Scott Bajere
might just be able to match them.
The quartermile races are shaping
up to be some of the best since the
days of Olympian Jarrin Solomon, as
Chaz Lewis, Chris Kline and Mustafa
Mudada have another year of exprience.
A 4x400 breakout could also be waiting
for this veteran group that needs one
extra runner.
The hurdles will largely feature Lewis,
Mudada and Cheyne Dorsey, with support
from long jumper Yannick Roggatz.

•
•
•
Like the women’s team, a lot of the
heavy hitters have graduated, leaving a
large load to carry. Adam Bitchell made
outstanding strides in 2014, while Elmar
Engholm shined in the mile. More
contributions from harriers like Alex
Cornwell, Ross Matheson and Graham
Thomas are needed if the Lobos are
going to continue their domination in the
distance races.
Alex Herring missed most of last year,
but can be a force in the 800 when
healthy. JP Cordova is also capable
of strong times, and the senior will be
looked to for such. During outdoor, Peter
Callahan is also a threat for an NCAA
title in the metric mile.
Local talent continues to compete at
UNM, with Jesus Mendoza, Tyler Potter,
Adam Monroe, Frankie Scorfina and
Tyler Valdez.
Jumps and pole vault
•
•
•
The mantle of the jumps, one of New
Mexico’s fortes, passes to Warrick
Campbell and Yannick Roggatz. Both
can compete at a high level, but don’t
have the support cast of years past.
Allan Hamilton, via the UK, can help.
Django Lovett is a veteran force in the
high jump who finally broke 7-2 in 2014.
Joining is senior Markus Miller, who is
eyeing a breakout of his own.
New Mexico’s cadre of pole vaulters is
light, with three-time All-MW performer
Logan Pflibsen the only listed vaulter.
Combined events and throws
•
•
Just like other events, the multis will be
youthful in 2015. Richard York is gone,
but in his place are three athletes,
Daniel Lam, Andris Sturans and Beau
Clafton, with potential.
A small contingent of throwers is
highlighted by javelin specalists Michael
Ellis and Marcus Simon, with prep
stanout Mike Budick are competing.

Indoor News & Notes
Men’s xc and Track Finish
11th in 2013-14 Program of
the Year Standings
The University of New Mexico men’s cross
country and track and field teams finished
in 11th place in the U.S. Track & Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association’s John
McDonnell Program of the Year award
standings for the 2013-14 academic year.
With an 11th-place finish at the 2013 NCAA
Cross Country Championships, 45th-place
finish at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field
Championships and a 44th place at the 2014
NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships,
the Lobos were able to notch their fifth
consecutive recognition for the award.
The Lobos has finished in the final standing for
the award the past five years, dating back to
2010. In 2013, New Mexico placed 13th, with a
21st-place finish in cross country, a 49th-place
finish in indoor track and a 28th-place finish in
outdoor track.
In 2012, New Mexico finished the season
ranked a program-best 11th (31st-place finish
in cross country, 15th in indoor track and 33rd
in outdoor track.), while 2011 saw the Lobos
take 14th overall (16th in cross country, 50th
in indoor track, and 41st in outdoor track). In
2010 the Lobos also placed 11th (8th in cross
country, 8th in indoor track, 55th in outdoor
track).
New Mexico is one of only two schools to finish
in the final standings each of the last five years,
along with Texas. Only three other institutions
— Oregon, Florida State and Stanford — have
finished in the final standings at least five times.
Lobos Nab Triple Crown in
2014, MW’s first since 2009
By winning the 2013-14 Mountain West titles in
cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor
track & field, the Lobos earned the program’s
first ever “Triple Crown”.
The BYU men, who now compete in the
West Coast Conference after departing the
conference in 2011, claimed the MW “Triple
Crown” nine times, winning the conference
titles in men’s cross-country, men’s indoor
track and men’s outdoor track in 1999-2000,
2000-01, 2002-03, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07,
2007-08 and 2008-09.
It’s the first instance of that in MW history since
BYU, and was one of just six Division I schools
to manage the Triple Crown on the men’s side
in 2014.
UT Arlington (Sun Belt), Villanova (Big East),
Northern Arizona (Big Sky), Liberty (Big South)
and Navy (Patriot) also earned the Triple Crown
on the men’s side in 2013-14.
Lobo cross country
and Track racking
up the titles
So we all know that UNM cross country has
done pretty well for itself at the conference
championships, sweeping the last six Mountain
West Cross Country Championships and the
last two Mountain West Men’s Indoor Track &
Field Championships.
Since the 2009-10 season, New Mexico
has won 16 of a possible 30 Mountain West
titles between cross country and track &
field. By comparison, only one other FBS
schools, Arkansas, has won more conference
championships in the same span (17).

UNM Sets records in
earning All-MW nods in 2014
29 Lobos were selected to the 2014 Mountain
West Indoor Track & Field All-Conference
men’s and women’s teams. For the men, 10
individuals and two relay teams claimed 15
total honors, while 10 women and a relay team
scored 14 total selections.
The 15 All-MW selections garnered by the
men tie the program record, matching the
15 selections registered by last year’s MW
Champion team.
The 14 all-conference nods for the Lobo
women eclipses the program’s highest total
indoors of 11 selections set in 2012.
Lobos Record program’s
first Title Sweep in 2014
By winning the men’s and women’s team titles
at the 2014 Mountain West Indoor Track &
Field Championships, the Lobos recorded their
first ever sweep of the indoor crowns.
In fact, this is the Lobos’ first-ever sweep of a
track & field championship, indoors or outdoors,
and doubled the number of indoor conference
titles in program history.
It’s also the first indoor track & field sweep
since 2011, when BYU did it. BYU had quite a
few sweeps, achieving that 10 times (2000-01,
2003-05, 2007, 2008-11). There have been 15
years of championships in MW history.

Indoor News & Notes
UNM’s 2014 title Sweep
is One-of-a-kind
Combined with the cross-country team’s sweep
of the Mountain West cross country titles in
November, the Lobos are the only school in
Division I to have swept their conference’s
cross country and indoor track & field titles in
2013-14.
It’s also the first time that’s happened in the
MW since BYU accomplished it in 2006-07.
The Cougars, now part of the West Coast
Conference, managed it five times: 1999-2000,
2000-01, 2002-03, 2004-05 and 2006-07.
hEAD COACH Joe Franklin
CLaims multiple accolades
University of New Mexico head track and
field coach Joe Franklin was named 2014
Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Coach of
the Year for both the men and women after his
teams swept the conference championships.
His honor as men’s COY came as a result of
the Lobo men winning their second straight MW
indoor title, which are the only two in school
history. The men’s only other conference title
was an outdoor crown in 1967.
He was recognition as the women’s COY
for coaching the women to their first ever
conference title indoors and the first-ever
outright title. (The Lobos shared the HCAC
outdoor championship in 1985.)
The Lobos had received just two conference
COY honors prior to Franklin’s selection,
counting his plaudit last year. In 2002, Matt
Henry, the UNM coach from 2000-06, was
named the men’s outdoor coach in 2002.
Lobos Rack up the titles
in ‘14 championship sweep
The Lobos did a stellar job sweeping the
Mountain West conference championships,
mostly due to winning a number of individual
title. On the men’s side, UNM claimed six event
titles (five individual and one relay), while the
women snapped up three individual crowns.
The six event titles on the men’s side featured
Luke Caldwell sweeping the 3000- and
5000-meter titles, and victories from Django
Lovett (high jump), Kendall Spencer (long
jump) and Warrick Campbell (triple jump).
The 4x400 meter relay team of Chris Kline,
Mustafa Mudada, Chaz Lewis and Cheyne
Dorsey also won.
Those six crowns are just off of a programbest, with last year’s haul of seven setting
the record. However, this number would have
bested the high prior to 2012, which was five
titles at 1983 WAC Championships.
The women also had success with individual
championships. Charlotte Arter won the mile,
while Margo Tucker (pole vault) and Aasha
Marler (long jump) also contributed titles.
2015 New Mexico Track Field • 5
The three titles tie the program high indoors,
set in 2003, 2010 and 2013. However, it’s just
the second time, along with 2010, that three
individuals won three conference crowns
indoors (Ruth Senior - 3000, Precious Selmon
- 60 hurdles, Deanna Young - triple jump).
