Today we hear the Father giving testimony that Jesus
is His beloved Son. We, His disciples, bear a responsibility to bear witness to Jesus.
For adult reflection: Have I ever felt so touched by
Jesus' love that I wanted to tell others about it? Have I
told them?
For children: Do I always bear witness to the fact that I
am Jesus' follower by my conduct?
Religion classes for children in Grades 1 through 8
attending public school are held on Sunday mornings
following the 9:15AM Family Mass in Gregorian Hall.
Diocesan Guidelines require two years of preparation
for First Holy Communion. Children 6 years of age or
older who have not been baptized must receive two
years of instruction before receiving the sacrament of
Baptism.

Faith Formation 718-347-0525.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
Cont.
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
1/11/2015
“These people should be in power not just for one day
but for the whole year, because we’ve reached a point
where anything is better than what we’ve had in our real
politics,”
- Isabel Romero
The residents of Ibi, Spain engage in an odd ritual
every year on December 28th, the Feast of the Holy Innocents. A group of conspirators, dressed in outlandish
military gear and armed with bags of flour, cartons of
eggs, firecrackers and fire extinguishers, stage a coup to
overthrow town government for a period of 24 hours.
After their battle, both groups agree to a cease-fire, during which they visit the bars and shops around Ibi, introducing random laws while jailing or imposing fines on
those who disobey them. The mock fines are used as
charitable donations, earmarked for a local home for
older adults.
This year the ritual has taken on a bit of an edge because of growing dissatisfaction among voters with the
extent of municipal corruption and inaction. Isabel
Romero's observations, quoted above are typical. Then
there is Elena Otych, owner of the Maseros Bar, who
was fined by rebel leader, Vincente Candela, because her
bar counter was deemed to be too high. “I prefer to pay
this fine than my normal taxes,” she said.
With all of the anticipated disagreement between the
members of the new Congress and the current presidential administration, with our mayor and members of the
police department at loggerheads, and with divisions surfacing during the recent Synod of Bishops in Rome, perhaps we should give some serious thought to the Iberian
approach to conflict management. A little flour, some
eggs, and a handful of firecrackers can go a long way.
About 9:00AM twenty or so conspirators - known as Els
Enfarinats or “The Flour Men” - invade town hall and
eject the mayor. A mock “opposition” group of residents
rapidly forms and challenges the rebels on Ibi’s church
square.
A battle ensues that leaves the square, as well as the combatants, coated in a mixture of raw egg and flour with
foam from the fire extinguishers adding to the mess.
COLLECTIONS last week amounted to $4,488 for the
Solemnity of Mary and $13,010 for Sunday, January 5th.
Thank you so very much for your generosity.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 11, 2015
