Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas, and a very Happy New Year to all of
you from all of us who serve on the Board of Directors. Thanks to all the residents who
attended the first Board meeting since the annual meeting; your participation is always
welcome and appreciated.
As we begin our new year, we are enthusiastic about the opportunities that are ahead in this upcoming year.
We purchased a new surveying tool “Survey Monkey” and hope to start surveying the residents soon to test its
use and start collecting valuable data.
I’m thankful for such a giving community as we see evident in our front lobby with the Toys for Tots
collections, the Food Bank contributions and the gift box for our brave veterans serving during this holiday
season. We wish the best for each and every one of you for the upcoming year.
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

Happy New Year! I sincerely hope that the new year finds all our residents happy and healthy.
Our annual financial audit is in progress. Field work is taking place starting January 5th. A preliminary draft is
expected in a few weeks following completion of the field work.
THERE’S A FORM FOR THAT! Help us help you by taking the time to complete the appropriate form for
whatever problem you would like to report. From common area landscaping to clubhouse maintenance needs,
we probably have a form to document issues that need attention. The front desk staff can provide a copy of the
appropriate form if you aren’t sure which one you need and they are also available on the website.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS? Residents frequently want to
make a suggestion or comment or just let the board know how they feel about an issue regarding the
community. The Board needs to work as a team and serve the community as a whole without personal gain.
Board members as individuals cannot speak for the board as a whole. A code of conduct was developed as a
policy and updated in 2009 for board members to follow. The entire policy can be viewed on the website. The
section addressing this type of situation is as follows:
“If a Director is contacted by a Member or resident with Association business, the Director will inform the
person that he/she must communicate with the Board as a whole through the general manager. This
communication can be at a Board meeting, by request to be put on the agenda, or in writing.”
Homeowners wishing to email the board can do so by sending their email message to the GM at
[email protected] who will then forward it to all board members.

‘Twas the holidays and walking into the Village
Center really put people in a festive mood. It was
beautifully decorated by some of our outstanding
volunteers.
All of the volunteers had previous experience in
decorating trees, some even did it as a living previous

SPRING CHORALE CONCERT

The Sunflower Chorale invites all those who are
interested in the magic of melody to join us as we
prepare for our spring concerts which will be held on
April 16 and 17 at 4:30 p.m. in the Fiesta Room.
We welcome all singers and you do not have to know
how to read music, although it is helpful. We will be
passing out music on January 5, 2015 at 3 p.m. There
is a $5.00 fee to help defray the costs of music but we
provide practice CDs along with the music we pass
out. We have Friday morning rehearsals from 10noon for sopranos and Saturday morning rehearsals
from 10-noon for tenors and basses. We hope to see
you then.
DISCUSSION GROUP

Organizational Meeting: Tuesday, January 13,
2015, 9-11 a.m.
This group is for anyone interested in thought
provoking, intellectual and stimulating conversation.
You’ll like participating if you’re curious about
learning more of what you don’t know.
The hope is to meet in a group of around 10-12
members to discuss a wide range of topics. Each
member can submit questions anonymously for
discussion. Questions can be serious or light and can
include current events, politics, personal growth,
health and nutrition, science, world ideas, and
anything else that is on our members' minds. (For
example: “Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the
future of [you fill in the word]?” “Should our society
be more open to [you fill in the word]?”)
The group philosophy should be inclusiveness in a
friendly and safe environment. Be always willing to
listen and learn respectfully to what others say and be
open to presenting new ideas.
Since this is a new group, we’ll be open to discussing
how we’ll be organized, appropriate group size,
meeting times and frequency, and so on. Everything
will be on the table.
So if you are looking to meet like-minded
intellectually stimulating thought provoking people,
join us! We're the fun people.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Perhaps this is your lucky
year but even if it isn’t, you can still have fun at our
Tuesday evening Bingo games. The date this month
is Tuesday, January 13.
We are pleased to have most of our snowbirds here
and we certainly would like to have them join us at
Bingo. We also have many new residents who might
want to join the game. If you have new neighbors,
stop in and invite them to join us. A side benefit is
that when more people play, the prizes are larger.
Thanks to our December volunteers—Carol
Abrahamson, Marcia Edgeton, Carol Burba, and
Peggy Smothers. We are still looking for people who
are willing to sell the specials and do the callbacks.
Please stop by the front desk and let us know if you

ARTISTS GALLERY

Our artist this month is Bob Snelson. Bob writes:
My interest in art began with oil painting in the
1960’s. From there I tried acrylic painting, sketching,
pottery, and colored pencils.
In the 1980s we had an opportunity to travel in
Europe and then to Turkey. One time we hiked to the
bottom of a canyon to view the caves that the early
Christians inhabited. It was hot and tiring. When we
reached the top I realized that the film in my camera
had never been properly installed and not one picture
came out. The digital years began in the late 1990s
when you could go into a store and ask about digital
cameras and the salesperson didn’t even know how to
turn a camera on. Times have changed!
Many of the pictures on my wall were taken with a
Kodak 2.1 megapixel camera. Believe it or not, it was
the state of the art in digital photography at that time.
The rodeo pictures were taken with a Canon 5D and
5D Mark II. We attended a Canon workshop and
they allowed me to use their 400mm professional
lens. The bull dogging picture was also taken with
that lens.
Last year we attended a workshop in Estes Park,
Colorado and the elk and moose pictures were taken
there. When I travel I am never disappointed even if
my camera shots aren’t the best because the pictures I
take with my eyes always remain with me.
Photography is an adventure. You have to love it.”
It doesn’t seem possible but every Lilly Books show
is better than the previous one. People are amazed at
the detail and beauty of her water colors. Lilly is an
exceptional person.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
FINANCE COMMITTEE

At our December meeting, we fine-tuned our Charter
as requested by the Board. We have an opportunity
for a Chase Bank Investment manager in non-profits
to discuss and review our investment strategy. We
attended the AZ Small Business Seminar held at the
Center to better understand the reporting role of our
Charter Clubs within Sunflower.
The Finance Committee serves at the bequest of the
Board of Directors. We oversee the Reserve Fund
and any new expenditures requiring reserve monies.
We are a small committee of 5 members and would
like to ask our neighbors who have been involved in
accounting, finance, or investments to come to our
meeting. We need your expertise!
Please check the Communicator for our next
meeting. We have changed day and times in January
to better fit the Board schedule of study session and
meeting dates. All members of Sunflower are invited
and we hope to see you there!
JANUARY POTLUCK

The January Potluck will be on Thursday, January
15th. The social time will begin at 5:30 with dinner at
6:00. This will be a traditional potluck with those
buying tickets signing up to bring an entrée, salad,
vegetable, or dessert. Please be sure that your dish
will serve 8-10 people.
The ticket costs are:
Two tickets at no cost if you bring an entrée
$2 per person if you bring a salad, vegetable
or dessert
Tickets were sold on Sunday, December 14th and
Monday, December 15th . Names were also taken on
those two days for a waiting list. If tickets become
available, a notice will be posted in the lobby of the
Village Center. If you buy a ticket and then cannot
attend, please call Dixie Whipple at 297- 9340 so that
your “not-needed ticket” can be offered to someone
on the waiting list.
Don’t forget to bring your own plates and flatware.
You are welcome to bring the beverage of your
choice. Coffee, water, and lemonade will be served.
We are looking forward to seeing you at our “winter”

SUNFLOWER LADIES LUNCHEON

Miss Saigon Bar and Grill, 4650 W. Ina Road, will be
the location for the January Ladies Luncheon on
Wednesday, January 14.
We will choose from 4
delicious entrees that will include soup, egg roll, tax
and tip for the price of $16 per person.
Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m. with an 11:30 a.m.
time for socializing with your neighbors. They are
offering us any house wine or drink for $5.00. This
is a CASH bar, so try to bring correct change.
Hone your chopstick skills and we’ll see you at Miss
Saigon on the 14th.
Sign up at the Village Center front desk by January 9.
Luncheon is limited to 50 persons.
DINE OUT

Would you like to get to know some new people?
How about trying out a new restaurant or sharing
your favorites with a small group? Come and check
us out.
A short meeting to form new groups for Dine Out
will meet in the Craft Room, Tuesday, January 6 at
4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Couples and singles, new and
seasoned Dine Outs are welcome. No dues and no
meetings. If you are unable to attend but would like
to participate, call me at 744-2495 before the meeting
date so that I can put you in a group.
BACCHUS WINE

In December, Bacchus folks had a wonderful
time sharing Holiday Drinks featuring—
what else?—WINE! Some bubblies, some mulled
wines and other hot drinks, and some brand new taste
treats, creative and delicious appetizers, good friends
and lots of laughter made for a fun-filled time. What
a terrific way to end the year. Here’s to more great
wine times in 2015!
We’ve already lined up many excellent events for the
New Year and would love to have some more funand wine-loving people join us. Our group’s purpose

is to learn more about wine while sharing good times
with our friends. We’re always open to new ideas for
things to do, as well, so why not make Bacchus part
of your New Year plans? There’s nothing to it at all;

you’ll be among the first to know what exciting
things are happening with the Bacchus crowd!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!
From the ROMEOs
In 2013, the ROMEO’S ‘travelled’ the world (aka
Tucson) sampling the cuisines of 14 countries. In
2015 we’ll ‘travel’ again. You won’t need a passport,
but a Visa card might help. We start our Epicurean
Tour with a taste of Italy.
On Wednesday, January 14th, we’ll carpool from the
Village Center at 11:10 a.m. to keep our 11:45 a.m.
reservation at Scordato’s Pizzaria 4280 N. Campbellit’s a lot more than just pizza. The Eggplant
Parmesan is one of this reporter’s favorites.
All men of Sunflower are invited to join us for
lunch. We get separate checks and there are no dues
to pay.
So we may give Scordato’s an accurate count, sign
up at the Village Center by noon, Tuesday, January
13th.

memories of Michigan, we like to get together more-orless once a year and at least introduce ourselves to each

SATURDAY MORNING COFFEE

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Your hosts for the first two
weeks this month are Don & Helen Crandall. We still
need someone to come forward and host the last three
weeks in January. If you have never hosted Saturday
morning coffee, you could join the Crandalls and perhaps

We want to thank our December volunteers Jim and
Audrey Anderson—they have been coffee volunteers

They are among our newest very active
volunteers. This year Jim and Mardelle Manes returned
to help us out in November and again in December—for
many years Jim and Mardelle hosted the coffee event.
As always, we welcome people who want to volunteer to
help with Saturday morning coffees.

loving residents playing Bocce. We would love to

play the game in one afternoon. If you decide you
want to join our club, dues are only $5.00 a year.

The Desert Ladies Nine Hole Golf Group will meet at
1:30 p.m. tee time. All lady golfers are welcome

Quarry Pines. Bring a friend. Sign up at the Center in
the book by the fitness room before Monday of the
week that you want to play.

SUNFLOWER MEN’S GOLF CLUB

The SMGC would like to wish everyone a happy
2015 New Year. Our semiannual meeting was held at
the Village Center on December 12, 2014. The
following existing club officers agreed to serve for
another year: Mike Clapham – President, Dennis
Correia – Vice President, Bruce Berg – Treasurer/
Secretary. The club members decided to rename our
annual Clint Fox Memorial Tournament to SMGC
Memorial Tournament in recognition of all former
SMGC members that have passed. The club has also
agreed to look into the possibility of “playing it
forward”. This would involve having all members
play from the same tee box, and keeping the yardage
at about 5800. A committee will look at the courses
we play to see what makes sense for each course.
This should help speed up play and make the game
more enjoyable.
The Clint Fox Memorial tournament held on
December 1 was won this year by the team of Dennis
Correia and Joan Junsay. They will receive the
traveling trophy with their names added to the list of
previous winners engraved on the trophy. Proceeds
from the entry fees were donated to a local nonprofit
charity.
Our Net Championship is currently underway, after
two rounds completed, the leaderboard as of
December 1 has Lowell Thalman in 1st place, Tom
Roberts in 2nd place, and Jim Dubois in 3rd place.
There are four more rounds to go in this event which
should conclude in January.
This month we would like to welcome a new
member, Jim Carpeau, to our club. We are always
looking for new members. So if you got new golf
clubs for Christmas, come on out and join us. You

member and we promise you some very enjoyable
golf experiences with our group.
PING PONG GROUP

We would love to have new players join us for ping
pong on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. All
playing levels, including beginners, are welcome for a
fun time of ego-free and oftentimes aerobic ping
pong. We have known for years that working
crossword puzzles and listening to Mozart are good
for the brain. Ping pong (table tennis) may well be
the world’s best brain sport. Our playing times may
vary so check the Fitness schedule in the Sun
Catcher. COME ON OUT!
FUN POKER AND TOURNAMENTS

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of
joining us for an afternoon of fun poker, we play
every Tuesday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. in the Library.
The Old West may have had their legends with Wild
Bill Hickok, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and others,
but we too have our legends and enjoy the
camaraderie of being together. Our club membership
is $5.00/year which will be due this month-- January.
First time players will not be asked to pay that for
playing their first game. However, if you wish to join
us on a regular basis, then becoming a member is
necessary.
We trust that everyone had a good holiday and for
those that went out of town to be with family, we
look forward to your return.

If you like to play single deck pinochle, join us from
1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons in
the Library (Sombrero Peak Lounge). There is no
cost and no reservations are needed, just show up.
We play partners and/or three-handed pinochle
depending on the number of players present. For

of the Sun Catcher.
The Sunflower Art Club meets on Wednesdays in the
Craft Room from 9 a.m. until noon. You can come
and go any time you want.
There is no
instructor. We are a group of artists who enjoy
painting together and helping each other. Bring
whatever medium you prefer. We have plastic sheets
available to cover the tables. The members range
from beginning to experienced artists. Usually, one
of the members is in the room at 9 a.m. If not, go
ahead and start painting.

TENNIS CLUB

The Sunflower Tennis Club had its annual
membership meeting December 2. Activities for the
new year will include a continuation of Sunflower
Mixed Doubles, Scheduled Doubles and social
mixers with tournament play and refreshments. Les
Baker will provide free tennis lessons for anyone
requesting help. The club will support Senior
Olympic tennis and inter-club tournament play within
the Tucson area. The Ladies InterClub and USTA
team is still going strong. They have made us proud
and have been good ambassadors for Sunflower. A
social time with refreshments followed the business
meeting.
For January, “Sunflower Mixed Doubles” starts at
8:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Women play Tuesday and Thursday. This is fun
social tennis where you rotate positions after each
game. An advantage of playing in this time slot is
that you may come and leave as you wish. For

ARTS AND CRAFTS

December projects were fun and festive. We started
the month making Embroidered Holiday cards, we
had many designs to choose from and each card
turned out beautifully. We also made wonderful
Christmas trees using cardboard cones, they were the
perfect size for your Holiday table.
Our annual Christmas luncheon held at Mimi’s Cafe
was well attended and enjoyed by our members, great
food and great company.
Our annual elections of officers will be held January
5th. A report will be published in our February
article. Be sure to check the board in the Craft Room
for the project list and dates.
We welcome everyone interested in learning a craft.
Our members will help you along to complete your
project. Our group meets every Monday at 10:00
a.m. in the Craft Room. If you wish to join us, the

Our Holiday potluck on Friday, December 12 was
well attended. This was a great celebration enjoyed
by many Sunflower residents. The delicious
appetizers, desserts, and holiday cuisine were so

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, January
22 at the Urgent Care Center on Silverbell Road. Our
meeting begins at 3:00 p.m. We will not have an
official speaker. We, as members and voters, will
lead the meeting. We will discuss the path of our

NIBBLERS AND NOSHERS

For our January meeting, we are suggesting you come
to SaddleBrooke to see a great movie, being copresented by the Jewish Federation Northwest
Division, and the Tucson JCC on Sunday, January 11,
2015 at 3 pm. The film is the The Other Son (France,
2012, 105 min. French, Hebrew with subtitles), a
moving and provocative story of two teenaged men –
one Israeli and one Palestinian – whose families face
complex repercussions after discovering that their
babies were switched at birth.
This is the Saddlebrooke kick-off for the Tucson
International Jewish Film Festival at the Desert View

READERS' CLUB MEETING

The Sunflower Readers' Club will
meet as usual on the first Tuesday,
January 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss
"Sea Glass," a novel by Anita Struve,
set in the Great Depression. It reveals
some of the ways hardships, income
inequality and the formation of labor unions affected
marriages, friendships and young people's passages to
maturity.
SUNFLOWER QUILTERS

dues receipt is your ticket.
Our first meeting in January will be
a social quilting (bring your own
project) day on January 2nd. Thought
we would just ease into 2015.
As our club title states, we are Singles and Friends
and this includes all Sunflower residents. So, if you
want to pay dues and join us in our activities, you are
welcome.
The monthly business meeting will be on the 8th. We
have planned social quilting for the 9th and the 16th.
On the 22nd, we will explore options for various
“Quilted Treasures” items for our fashion show in late
March. Simple patterns and creative ideas for making
a variety of purses and totes would be most welcome.
The December event with the theme of Sweet and
Savory was enjoyed by all. We always enjoy the
Sunflower Chorale singing the Christmas songs and
leading in singing of carols.
The highlight of the month will likely be our trip to
the Tucson Quilt Show at the Convention Center. We
are planning to carpool from the Center on January
23rd. If you are new to quilting or new to quilting at
Sunflower, this is a wonderful way to become inspired
and to begin your “stash” of quilting fabric and
supplies. Come and enjoy the many exhibits, classes,
product demonstrations, and of course, the fabulous
quilts.
All residents are welcome and encouraged to check
out what we are doing. Prospective and new members
are welcome each Thursday or Friday morning from
9:00-noon at the Center. If you don’t have a sewing
machine, we have two that are available for you to use
at the Center during our quilting sessions. If you have
even a basic machine, bring it along. Come and join
the fun!
SINGLES AND FRIENDS

Happy New Year 2015! The Singles and Friends club
is looking forward to an interesting and fun filled

Our January event on Saturday, January 17 starting
with social time at 5:30 p.m. is membership night.

dessert. After dinner you will be entertained by
members of Singles and Friends in a mystery radio
play with sound effects. The title is “Sherla Combs

SUNBIRD CAMPERS/RV CLUB

Another enjoyable combination Business and Social
event was held at Mimi’s Restaurant on December 5th,
last month. With over 80% of our membership in
attendance, the required by-laws clause for election of
officers for the coming year was met with the
following results: President, Joe Yearous; Secretary,
Anneliese Foley; Treasurer/Vice President, Larry
East.
In November, club member David Boe, rode in the El
Tour de Tucson to raise money for the Habitat for
Humanity. Congratulations David! With more and
more Snowbird members back for the winter season,
the club also enjoyed a fun social event held at the
home of Fred and Janet Yeck the week before
Thanksgiving. Now that the Holiday Season is over,
it is time to be looking at future months for fun
activities. If you are planning on attending the Blythe
Bluegrass Music Festival or the Good Sam Rally at
the Phoenix race track, you better be finalizing your
reservations. Check the club website for links to get
information on these future events.

SUNFLOWER TECHNOLOGY CLUB

The new year promises to be an exciting one for the
Technology Club! The world of electronics is
changing more rapidly than can possibly be imagined
and this coming year will be highlighting what is
called “wearable tech”. Some of our members
already use fitness bracelets and some may even own
Google Glasses but just beyond the horizon are
“smart” watches, wireless pulse and heart monitors
and even pacemakers that communicate regularly
with your smartphone and your doctor. Personally, I
just started using Bluetooth with my hearing aids to
transmit my TV signal directly to my ears, making
sure that others don’t have to hear a loud television.
Our membership drive starts this month and we
would love to have everyone in the community be a
part of the club. Our dues are $25 for a single
membership and $35 for a household and include full
use of the computer lab and the wireless system
(which now includes a dedicated color laser printer).
We also endeavor to have monthly presentations that
enhance the value of the membership.
If you were able to attend the Electronics Expo in
December, you got to see some of what we do. Many
of our members tend to be on the cutting edge of
current technology and do a great job of sharing it
with the rest of us. We also invite outside experts to
speak on a variety of topics that are relevant to the
club.
SUNFLOWER TRAVEL CLUB

The SF Travel Club Sales Desk will be open on
Wednesdays January 7th and January 21st from 1:00
to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday January 17th from 8:30
to 10:30 a.m.

The Mystery Trip in November was enjoyed by all.
The day included stops at the Garden of Gethsemane,
San Xavier Mission, lunch at Golden Coral with a
surprise guest speaker, Sentinel Peak aka “A”
Mountain and the Franklin Auto Museum.

VETERANS

We have had a banner year for our primary effort to
send boxes of essential goods to Afghanistan. At last
report we have sent 77 boxes into the hinterlands of
that country. Each box is sent to a specific addressee
so we are sure that it is received.
To send a box, the Post Office charges $15.90. How
The simple math shows that we provided $1224.30 in
donations for our troops there which was within $30
of our budget. What a great effort by all our tream
led by Jack Battaglia and Don Seymour! The "Chow
Line" and your donations of goods made it all
possible. The Veterans thank you for your support.
Some milestones have been reached by some of us.
Will Harris was 90 on 23 November and Ted Masters
will be 90 on 10 January. Dick Teugh was 80 on 10
December. Happy Birthday to you all. My guess is
that they will all make 100.

ARE YOU A SURVIVOR?

We all know someone who has been diagnosed with breast
cancer. Many of us have been touched more personally by
receiving the diagnosis ourselves. Whether a person is
currently in treatment, a survivor of a few months or many
years, we share common issues, fears, sorrows, joys and
insights. We return to our daily lives with an appreciation
for survival but find a sense of shared comfort, hope and
sisterhood when we meet someone who has been through
the same experience. I am one of those survivors who live
here in Sunflower and have led the Sunflower Breast
Cancer Support Group for the past 10 years. My
background is in the medical field.
We are women who have survived for as little as a few
months up through 22 years. Some visit us to obtain
support while others serve to provide support. We are all
part of a sisterhood of survivors.
We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from
2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the privacy of my home. P lease call

Sunflower Neighbors is a group of volunteers living in
Sunflower who donate their time, transportation and
understanding to those in need. A volunteer will provide a
ride to a doctor, dentist or other necessary appointments
when you are unable to drive yourself. The phone number
for this service is 331-5520. Please allow 4 days notice to
locate an available volunteer. We are not normally
available to take you shopping or run errands.
If you have an emergency, remember to call 911 or a taxi
to get you to the hospital or doctor.
A reliable ride is a top need for some in our community.
We are hoping to sign up more volunteers willing to give
their time to help someone get to their appointment. You
can help a friend stay connected and independent. We
encourage anyone interested in finding out more about this
positive, supportive group, SUNFLOWER NEIGHBORS,
to become a part of this network of volunteers. Reach out
to your community by joining now, you are needed.

AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM

Again, the Abbott Library is going to be the AARP Tax-aide site closest
to Sunflower for help in filing your 2014 income tax returns. This
service is free. Tax counselors will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. on Thursdays, starting on February 5, 2015. First come first
served.
When you first arrive, you will sign in and be given an Interview Form
to complete. Please bring with you:
Photo ID
All relevant 2014 tax documents, i.e.,1099 div, 1099 int, Social
Security info, etc,
Your 2013 federal and state tax return,
Social Security numbers for all persons listed on the return, and
Your bank routing and account number (blank check or deposit
slips) for direct deposit of refunds.
You do not need to be accompanied by your spouse. If you are filing a
joint return, however, you will need to get your spouse’s signature
before we can e-file your return.
If you are planning to itemize deductions, please summarize deductable
expenses into their categories, i.e., medical expenses, state and property
taxes, mortgage interest, gifts to charities, and misc. deductions. If you
have sold stocks or mutual funds in 2014, bring your brokerage
statements that include their date of sale and purchase, selling price and
cost basis.
Remember that Arizona personal property tax paid when you register an
automobile is tax deductible. The personal property tax is itemized on
your automobile registration receipt which you keep in your car.
All tax counselors are well trained and eager to help you complete your
required federal and state income tax returns.
