Adult Spinal Service now available on Choose and Book
Mr Ian Pitman is a whole time Consultant
Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon who is based at
the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham
where he works as part of a tertiary
referral centre for the West Midlands. He
qualified from his specialist training in
2006, undertaking Spinal Fellowships at
the University Hospital, North Staffordshire
and Bristol with subsequent Fellowship
visitations to Miami and Orlando Florida
before taking up his substantive post at the
Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
Having worked at Nuffield Health Hereford Hospital for over 6 years seeing
adult spinal patients Mr Pitman is delighted to share with you a new Adult Spinal
Service which is now available at Nuffield Health Hereford on the Choose and
Book scheme. The clinic is currently held once a month with the potential to
increase the frequency depending on demand. This service is being set up to
treat routine adult spinal patients, patients requiring urgent assessment for
conditions such as cauda equina and/or Neurological deficit should be referred
through the normal NHS pathways that currently exits.
As part of the clinic Mr Pitman is able to offer a comprehensive and full opinion
for all adult patients with sciatica, back pain and spinal stenosis. He offers a full
injection service for these conditions including image guided transforaminal
nerve root blocks/epidural and facet joint injections. A large number of patients
can be managed by conservative means with a spinal injection to help reduce
pain levels and to be able to help the patient engage with physiotherapy/manual
techniques. It can also help to break pain cycles. For patients who have not
settled on conservative means he is able to offer surgical management for disc
herniations by way of microscopic posterior decompression and excision of disc
fragments and in addition he is able to offer decompressions for patients with
lumbar spinal stenosis where they do not require more complex intervention
requiring stabilisation type procedures.
MRI and radiological procedures need to be identified within the referral letter
so they can be obtained electronically ahead of the appointment if it were not
performed at Nuffield Health Hereford Hospital.
Private appointments are also available at Nuffield Health Hereford Hospital
as before for the whole range of adult spinal conditions. Please contact the
dedicated GP number 01432 262509 at Nuffield Health Hereford Hospital
directly to arrange these.
