This week also saw Maersk announce an $800 per teu general rate increase on 15 January from Asia to both North Europe and the Mediterranean. Before Christmas, both OOCL and Hapag-Lloyd, partners in the G6 alliance, said they would look to achieve an $850 per teu increase on 15 and 19 January respectively. The attempts to force rates up come as capacity on the trade continues to rise. Yesterday saw the arrival of of China Shipping’s CSCL Globe at the UK port of Felixstowe. It is currently the world’s largest containership – a title it is expected to retain for all of about two months until the MSC Oscar enters service. CSCL GLOBE arriving at Felixstowe Photo : David Berg http://ukshippinglog.blogspot.com/ © According to Alphaliner the China Shipping vessels cost $136.6m each. Both vessels will operate the Ocean Three (O3) Asia-Europe service FAL8/AEX 1/AEC1 – depending on whether you are talking to CMA CGM, China Shipping or UASC. Three further 19,100 teu vessels – the CSCL ATLANTIC OCEAN, CSCL INDIAN OCEAN and CSCL ARCTIC OCEAN – are all due to be delivered by March to join the same service, which is eventually expected to deploy 11 vessels between 10,000-19,000 teu on a weekly rotation. In addition to the O3 carriers, Alphaliner reported that “this loop will also be used by Cosco, Yang Ming, Hanjin and Evergreen under separate slot agreements”, and, in a further sign of the blurring of boundaries between the four alliance groupings, another source told The Loadstar that CKYH-E alliance members Cosco and Hanjin are to buy slots on the O3’s FAL1 service that calls at Southampton, with Cosco understood to take agreed to charter 500 slots per week. This new container vessel was delivered on 5 January, the third of five 4,662teu full-container vessels built for Yang Ming by China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC). With a length of 259m and width of 37.3m, this eco-friendly vessel can cruise at a speed of up to 22.9 knots. On 6 January, Yang Ming announced that it would be opening a new Japan-Taiwan-Thailand (JT2) service together with APL. Three 1,800teu container vessels, one from Yang Ming and two from APL, will be deployed for this service. With 21 days for a round Distribution : daily to 31825+ active addresses 12-01-2015 Page 3 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2015 – 012 voyage, the JT2 service will call the ports as follows: Laem Chabang, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Osaka, Kobe, Moji, Hakata, Kaohsiung, Chiwan and Laem Chabang. Yang Ming strives not only for environmental protection but also for lowering the average age of its ships, said the company in a statement, and the new generation ships incur lower operational costs and consume energy more efficiently. The port rotation of the CPX service is in this order: Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Singapore, Karachi, Mundra, Port Kelang, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The length, in combination with the massive width, makes this vessel unique. ‘PIETER SCHELTE’ is intended for installing and removing topsides and jackets of large offshore oil and gas platforms in a single lift. At the bow of the vessel is a slot, where topsides are lifted. The vessel is also equipped for laying large pipelines and, with her capacity, will be the largest pipelay vessel as well. The vessel can lift topsides of offshore platforms weighing up to 48,000 tonnes and jackets up to 25,000 tonnes. Final assembly of ‘PIETER SCHELTE’’ will take place in the Alexiahaven. The inner lake of Maasvlakte 2 currently provides the necessary space. A special pit is dredged for the vessel. In the port of Rotterdam, the 65 metre long beams of the topsides lift system will be installed. The lifting beams are being constructed in Italy and will be transported by ship to the Netherlands. During the assembly process KOTUG will deliver towage services of several parts to ‘PIETER SCHELTE’’. World's biggest container ship arrives at Rotterdam sea waters Distribution : daily to 31825+ active addresses 12-01-2015 Page 5 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2015 – 012 A grand ceremony was held as scheduled on Saturday at the port of Rotterdam to welcome the world's biggest container ship, the CSCL GLOBE owned by China Shipping Group, though the vessel on her maiden voyage was held miles away from the port due to 7-10 gale wind and 4-meter-high waves roaring above the sea waters. "It's an honor to welcome the CSCL GLOBE at the Port of Rotterdam. It's a testimony of the excellent relationship between China Shipping and the terminal operator, Euromax ECT here in Rotterdam, and also of the excellent relationship between the ports in China and the Port of Rotterdam," Allard Castelein, Chief Executive of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, told Xinhua at the welcome ceremony. The CSCL GLOBE off Hoek van Holland awaiting weather before entering Rotterdam-Maasvlakte Photo: Hans van der Linden www.aerolin.nl @AerolinPhoto BV © CLICK on the photo "We look forward to further collaboration. I think the port of Rotterdam is laid out in a very efficient way for such vessels," he said, adding that it's a pity that the vessel cannot enter the port due to the bad weather while stressing that the safety of people and cargo on board has always been the primary consideration of the Port authorities. "Although we have so many distinguished guests here, safety is paramount and we can not compromise. We have to wait till the weather turns better and that is part of the maritime industry. We expect the vessel to enter into the port in another 24 if not 48 hours," he explained."I do expect that many people will come to visit as soon as the ship comes in because the Dutch people support the maritime industry and businesses very much," added the head of the European largest port. For Ahmed Aboutaleb, Mayor of Rotterdam, the voyage of the world's largest container ship to Rotterdam is a very impressive moment for the trade between China and the Netherlands."Rotterdam is a key port for Chinese exports to Europe. Through the port of Rotterdam, China has the opportunity to reach about 500 million rich consumers in Europe," said the mayor.Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands Chen Xu stressed that the arrival of the CSCL Globe at Rotterdam illustrates the win-win perspective of the development of trade and cooperation between China and the whole world. "Four centuries ago, Chinese goods such as tea, silk and porcelains entered into the heartland of Europe through the Dutch gateway. We call it maritime silk road," said the ambassador."Nowadays, the Chinese authorities have launched an initiative to develop the Silk Road Economic Belt and to build a 21st Century New Maritime Silk Road. This is not only based on the needs of China to further open up to the world, but also a platform for all relevant regions to develop together," said the ambassador. Setting off from Tianjin, China, last December to embark on its first voyage on the Asia-Europe trade loop, the CSCL Globe measures 400 meters in length and about 60 meters wide, or the size of four soccer fields, Xiaowen Huang, deputy general manager of China Shipping Group, told the welcoming audience. In spite of its extra carrying capacity, 19,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) shipping containers, the CSCL Globe's electronically-controlled main engine, which automatically adjusts fuel consumption based on the ship's speed and sea conditions, allows the ship to burn 20 percent less fuel per TEU than ships with 10,000 TEU capacity, he added. "China shipping and Port of Rotterdam has a history of long term cooperation. Since the first call in 1999, the total box throughput of China shipping container vessels at Port of Rotterdam has exceeded 2 million TEU," said the responsible of the giant of the Chinese shipping industry. Once the weather turns better, the CSCL GLOBE will come into the Port of Rotterdam to discharge, said Huang. It will then set off for Hanburg in Germany and Zeebrugge in Belgium before coming back to Rotterdam in mid-January for uploading. The output volume does not take into account partner shares, and broke the previous record of 2,257,000 barrels set on December 27, 2010. Petrobras also broke, on December 21, the daily operated production record, producing 2,470,000 bpd. The new historical record is mainly the outcome of the contribution made by nine production systems, five of which went into operation in 2013 and had new wells interconnected to them throughout 2014. Four more were installed this year. Of the platforms installed in 2013, the ones that contributed to this record were: P-63, in Papa-Terra field, and P-55, in Roncador field, both in the Campos Basin; FPSO Cidade de Itajaí, in the Baúna field, in the Santos Basin post-salt; and FPSOs Cidade de São Paulo, in the Sapinhoá field, and Cidade de Paraty, in the Lula Northeast area – both in the Santos Basin pre-salt.The production systems that went into operation in 2014 and also contributed to the record were: P-58, in Parque das Baleias, and P-62, in the Roncador field, both in the Campos Basin, and FPSOs Cidade de Mangaratiba, in the Iracema South area, and Cidade de Ilhabela, in the Sapinhoá North area, both in the Santos Basin pre-salt. The high operational efficiency of the fields located in the Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo portions of the Campos Basin also contributed to the record as a result of the Operational Efficiency Increase Program (Proef). These areas have maintained a sustainable production, in face of the natural decline in reservoirs. It is also important to emphasize the high operational efficiency and production sustainability in Operational Units in Northern and Northeastern Brazil, which have nearly compensated for the total natural decline from mature fields in these areas. Production operated by Petrobras in the presalt sets new record and passes the 700,000-barrel-of-oil-per-day Distribution : daily to 31825+ active addresses 12-01-2015 Page 9 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2015 – 012 mark Oil production in fields operated by Petrobras, in both Santos and Campos basin pre-salt layers, reached the historical 700,000 bpd mark on December 16, 2014. About 74 percent of this volume (523,000 bpd) corresponds to the company's share, while 26 percent to its partners' share. The 700,000 bpd output was reached a mere eight years after the first oil discovery at the pre-salt layer, in 2006, and only six months after it reached the 500,000-barrel mark, in June. This production represents a significant milestone for the oil industry, especially due to the fact that these fields are located in deep and ultra-deep waters. Only 34 production wells contributed to the 700,000 bpd mark, proof the high productivity of the fields that have already been discovered in the pre-salt layer. Sixteen of these wells are located in the Santos Basin, which accounts for 61 percent of the volume produced in the pre-salt – approximately 429,000 bpd. The remaining 18 wells are located in the Campos Basin and account for the remaining 39 percent – 273,000 barrels per day. Pre-salt oil is currently produced by 12 different platforms, eight of which producing exclusively from that geological layer. The increase in output is due to the excellent operational performance of the well construction and interconnection activities, with support from two strategic programs: the Well Cost Reduction Program (PRC-Poço) and the Subsea Installation Cost Reduction Program (PRC-Sub). These programs are part of initiatives that are introducing continuous improvements in reducing duration and costs, not only for wells, but also E&P subsea deployment projects. Jane Griffiths joined Tobermory RNLI as a volunteer crew member in September 1996 and was appointed as a Deputy Second Coxswain in August 2004, one of the first women in the RNLI to be appointed to the position.During more than 18 years’ service, she took part in 67 rescues, helping to save four lives and assisting numerous others in difficulty at sea.She also spent 400 hours or the equivalent of two and a half weeks on exercise. Jane resigned from the volunteer crew shortly before Christmas 2104 due to having to spend increasing amounts of time overseas through her work as a marine scientist. Tobermory RNLI full time Coxswain, Andrew McHaffie says: ‘As well as being one of the first ever female Coxswains in the RNLI, Jane has given nearly two decades of service to saving lives at sea and she has been generous in passing on her knowledge to new members of the crew. She will be much missed and everyone at the station would like to wish her all the very best for the future.’ Note: The photograph above, taken by Sam Jones, press officer and member of Tobermmory RNLI Lifeboat’s volunteer crew, show Jane Griffiths with the international musician, Fish [a marine scientist would have to be interested in Fish] at Tobermory’s Lifeboat Day in 2011. Edward Fitzek © Long lifespan ahead for Norne FPSO offshore Norway Statoil plans to keep production going at the Norne field complex in the Norwegian Sea until 2030. When the facilities (an FPSO and five subsea templates) came onstream in November 1997, they were expected to cease operating in 2014. However, a series of maintenance measures and add-ons mean that the Norne floater remains in good shape and new discoveries in the area continue to be phased in as subsea tiebacks. Today production flows from 15 subsea templates. Across the Norne license 26 exploration wells have been drilled, with discoveries on the Stær, Svale, Dompap, and Fossekall fields The last subsea template to be installed was on Skuld in 2013. In addition, the Alve field and the Eni-operated Marulk field have been tied in to the Norne FPSO So far Norne and its satellites have produced around 700 MMboe. The recovery factor for the main Norne field today is 56.5% Norne operations vice president Kristin Westvik said: “We now aim to increase the recovery factor to 60%. The remaining resources in the Norne area may total as much as 300 MMboe – the equivalent of an Aasta Hansteen field.” Last year Statoil, Polarkonsult in Harstad, and Aker Solutions in Tromsø conducted studies to clarify the technical condition of the hull of the Norne FPSO, to determine whether a yard stay might be needed in 2018 in order to extend its technical life to 2030 “The studies conclude that the hull structure is solid and that the life can most likely be extended to 2036,” Westvik said. “We can thus make the necessary modifications at Norne in order to extend the productive life without bringing the FPSO ashore for an extensive period. This allows us time to thoroughly plan the road ahead for Norne 2030.” The focus now is on progressing maintenance work to sustain the hull’s technical condition. In 2017, Statoil plans to initiate a project in 2017 detailing the scope and time of investments, and it will also apply to extend Norne’s technical life by 2021. Lawrence Dalli - www.maltashipphotos.com (c) Asian Fuel Siphoning on the Rise Siphoning of ship fuel is not a new trend, but the frequency of incidents has escalated. 15 incidents of siphoning of ship fuel or oil were reported on board tankers in Asia in 2014, of which 12 were successful. A new ReCAAP ISC report says the attacks have a number of common characteristics including minimal violence against the crew. The report provides an update to the Special Report on ‘Incidents of siphoning of ship fuel/oil at Sea in Asia’ dated 24 July 2014 and focuses on the method of operation of the perpetrators including the involvement of syndicates and organized groups. In most cases, the perpetrators were interested in the manifest of fuel or oil on board the vessel and had no intention of hijacking the vessel or kidnaping the crew.Once on boarding the vessel, they tied the crew and locked them in cabins then steered the vessel to another location to conduct the siphoning onto another vessel which would come alongside. After completion of the siphoning, the perpetrators destroyed the vessel’s communication and navigation equipment, stole the crew’s cash and personal belongings and then left the vessel. The crew was not harmed, and there was no reports of violence involved. Of the 12 incidents, seven involved tankers of less than 2,000gt. All boardings occurred during hours of darkness with nine boardings taking place between 20:00-23:45 hours, two between 00:55-02:05 hours and one at 06:00 hours. Of the nine incidents with reports on the duration the perpetrators remained on board the vessels, six incidents involved the perpetrators onboard the vessels for an estimated 6-10 hours and two incidents for an estimated 4-5 hours. However, in the incident involving Srikandi 515, the owner lost the tanker for 49 days (9 Oct to 27 Nov). Investigation is ongoing as to what happened to the vessel during this period. Six incidents involved 8-10 perpetrators, three involved 5-7 perpetrators, one involved 16 perpetrators and two involved 25-26 perpetrators. In most cases they were armed with knives and firearms. The crew were not injured in most of the incidents except for minor injury sustained by the crew in two incidents; namely onboard Sri Phangnga and Sunrise 689. Notably, there were no reports of firearms being discharged. In most of the incidents, the crew was tied and locked in the mess room or engine control room. Then the perpetrators steered the vessel to the South China Sea to carry out the siphoning. Commodore Joel Garcia, PCG district commander for the National Capital Region, said a "no-sail zone" (NSZ) will be implemented within a mile from the breakwater of Manila Bay. The decision was reached after a maritime conference was held by the PCG and representatives from the Philippine Navy, Philippine National Police, the Presidential Security Group, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).Garcia added that the rule will affect all kinds of sea vessels, including yachts, dragon boats, kayaks, "romantic" cruise ships, fishing boats, ships and small boats. Sea planes will also be prohibited to come near the breakwater. The information will also be disseminated to all fishermen from Pasay to Navotas, as well to those in the coastal fishing towns of Cavite and Bataan. The NSZ will be in place until Pope Francis leaves the country on January 19.Aside from the NSZ, the government will also provide a hospital ship. Swimming in Manila Bay will also be prohibited, while sea marshals will be assigned to each ship docked at the Manila Bay. -- report from Ricky Velasco, dzMM Source : abs-cbnnews. Tanker owners still riding on a high wave Tanker owners can count themselves among the lucky ones as 2015 started, as they’re still riding the high waves of last year. According to the latest weekly report from shipbroker Fearnley’s, in the crude tanker market “it has been a rather positive end of the last year and the start of the new year for the owners. The activity, particularly in the Meg has been active with firming rates combined with plummeting bunker prices on the back of the sharp fall in crude prices. The earnings have varied between low $50.000 pd to close to $70.000 pd for Meg/East voyages, levels not seen for a long time but badly needed after the meagre year the owners have behind them. Still brisk activity in the meg with firming rates, though somewhat slower (temporarily) in West Africa whilst Caribbean continues very firm as ships remain thin on the ground”. The shipbroker added that “during the Christmas week activity for Suezmaxes in all Major areas was slow. We have however seen activity in January picking up, but due to ample tonnage availability rates have soften and are now down w15 points basis Td 20 from 31 December. We expect an active third decade in West Africa and with limited VLCC availability we expect to see rates stabilize or even firm from recent levels. In Bsea/Med we expect the same also due to increased delays in Turkish Strait. (it snowed in Istanbul yesterday). Rates for Aframaxes in the Baltic has increased to ws 140 level at time of writing. Main reason is the tax deduction that came into force for Russian export from January, producing more volumes out of the Baltic. The arrival of ice season has also made an impact on rates although ice so far has been absent due to mild weather, no charterer is willing risk conventional ships fixing forward cargoes. The Med/Bsea Aframax market slowed down significantly before entering the holidays. Momentum very quickly changed in the area and rates came under downward pressure before it seem to have bottomed out at the ws Distribution : daily to 31825+ active addresses 12-01-2015 Page 17 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2015 – 012 90 level. At the moment cargo activity is recovering and we see the long list of available ships starting to get absorbed”, said Fearnley’s. PRODUCT TANKER Meanwhile, in the product tanker market, the shipbroker mentioned that “since the start of the new year we have witnessed a mixed market on both sides of the Suez Canal. The TC market has been somewhat quiet during the holidays, but rates remain steady and even appears to be firming. – EAST OF SUEZ – It has been a busy start to the new year for the LR2´s in the east so far. Rates on the other hand have remained soft, albeit steady, due to an overhang of available tonnage from the end of last year. At the time of writing it appears that the market has bottomed out and current rates are slightly above last done. During the holidays the LR1´s built up a nice momentum, and even though the market has been fairly quiet this week rates are still looking firm on the back of delays and uncertain positions. Notably the spread between LR1 and LR2 is currently at some 35 points in favor of the LR1´s, but we except this gap to close in towards more normal levels in due course. MR´s trading MEG/JPN remains unchanged compared to pre-holiday levels. – WEST OF SUEZ Activity has remained steady for the LR2´s in the west, and rates have not moved much during the holidays and into the new year. With bunkerprices still sliding, owners however are seeing increased earnings. For the LR1´s, rates have come down some 25 points since the pre-holiday bullmarket, but at a good level and seems to have stabilized. The MR market has been quiet throughout the past few weeks, and rates have taken a hit for both ex UKC and ex USG trading. Position lists are looking heavy on both sides of the Atlantic, and rates are still under pressure. Handies trading x-Med and x-UKC have also experienced a softening trend since the holidays, but with a high starting point earnings are still decent for the owners”. GAS CARRIERS Finally, in the market for Gas Carriers, Fearnley’s said that “2015 has started with a yawn in the VLGC market, pretty much as forecasted, though. There were a few fixtures concluded over the festive season and in the first week of the New Year at gradually lower rates, taking the Baltic index down to USD 60 pmt. But, as HFO as fallen drastically and concurrent to the crude slide, HFO costs owners less than half of what it was exactly one year ago. Therefore, net TC return to owners is 40% higher as 2015 kicks off compared to the returns 1 year ago when the Baltic was identical. But, more uncertainty lies ahead now (than one year ago) with the weak crude, LPG and Natgas prices and the oversupplied energy markets. There are a couple of Indian LPG cargoes floated this week, but surprisingly only for very late January loading. Other potential charterers have sidelined themselves concerned that what can be a good deal today may look terrible tomorrow, therefore we do not expect any immediate recovery in chartering activity. Under normal circumstances the VLGC fleet supply we see in January should balance demand, but now it is doubtful and we may very well see more idle time ahead”, the shipbroker concluded. It was learnt that capital intensive nature of this project and other commitments compelled the director general of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi to appeal to the federal government to exempt the Agency from contributing to the federation account for a period of five years.Akpobolokemi said the dream of NIMASA Shipyard and Dockyard, which will be managed by the private sector, is to transform the maritime sector into an industry that will generate capable manpower which will contribute significantly to the nation's gross domestic product. He said the vision behind the shipyard, which is being developed in two phases, is to have a world class building and repair facility that will be commercially viable to transform the nation's economy. There are fears, however, that the completion of these projects are hinged on President Jonathan's success in February 2015 elections as another administration may not be favourably disposed to continuing it, apparently because of certain political considerations Source : Allafrica Distribution : daily to 31825+ active addresses 12-01-2015 Page 23 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2015 – 012 ROUTE, PORTS & SERVICES FBI officially drops cruise ship death case By : Robert Marchant The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Friday officially announced it was dropping its probe into the 2005 cruise ship death of Greenwich's George A. Smith IV. The statement, by Special Agent in Charge Patricia Ferrick of the FBI'sNew Haven office, read: "We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Smith family for the loss they suffered with the tragic passing of their son and brother, GeorgeSmith. Following a thorough investigation, including multiple reviews, the New Haven FBI has determined that there is not sufficient evidence to continue the investigation. Accordingly, after nearly 10 years, the investigation has been closed. However, if new evidence is uncovered, we will reopen the case."Smith's family had been told earlier in the week by bureau representatives that the investigation was being closed. Family members then took to Facebook to express their anger, calling themselves"outraged and disgusted" at the news that Smith's disappearance was being dropped for further review. On July 5, 2005, George A. Smith IV was on his honeymoon cruise on the Aegean Sea with his bride Jennifer Hagel-Smith. He disappeared after a night of heavy drinking with a group of fellow passengers. Loud noises were heard in his cabin, and blood stains were later found beneath the balcony outside the cabin. The case drew national attention, and led to legislation requiring cruise companies to notify U.S. authorities following homicides, suspicious deaths or disappearances. The Smith family went to court with George Smith's former wife over a settlement awarded by Royal Caribbean International following his disappearance, an often bitter fight that lasted four years.More recently, Smith's family in 2013 launched an extensive campaign via news- and social-media to find answers to what happened that night. The Smith family has said it intends to try to find another jurisdiction to pursue the investigation. George Smith's sister, Bree Smith, has called a video made by other passengers on the ship a strong indicator that foul play was involved, with robbery a possible motive. At the time of his disappearance, George Smith was wearing an expensive watch, and other passengers may have heard him talking about holding large amounts of cash after his wedding. Through the years, the case has featured a perplexing mix of depositions, polygraph tests, legal fights andcompeting scenarios over what happened that night.Smith has been legally declared dead.
