Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department WINTER/SPRING 2015 Inside: Sitting Volleyball On February 8th, 2015 USA Volleyball, Florida Region will be hosting a sitting volleyball clinic in partnership with Palm Beach County Sports Commission and Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department. The Clinic will be held from 3:00 5:00 pm at the CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex. Sitting volleyball was introduced as a demonstration sport for individuals with lower extremity amputations or paralysis in the 1976 Paralympic Games in Toronto, Canada. The sport has officially been part of the Paralympics since 1980. In the sport of sitting volleyball, the net is lower and the court is smaller than a traditional volleyball court. Teams consist of mixed classes in both male and female events. Many of the same rules as traditional volleyball apply, however at all times an athletes pelvis must touch the ground. Come out to join the athletes as a spectator or join in the fun by learning how to play the sport. The sport is action packed, often moving much faster than traditional volleyball. 4 5 9 12 14 Lottery Application Form Community Programs Program Registration Form Special Olympics Programs VSA Programs Therapeutic Recreation staff plan to form a local sitting volleyball team. She has been involved in Special Olympics since 1999 and is a 5 sport athlete - stand up paddle, swimming, bowling, track, and basketball. Morgan has lots of medals and ribbons including gold and silver in swimming at the 2006 National Games. Morgan is very involved in the Athlete Leadership Program (ALPs) stating she appreciates the ALPs training and opportunities. She feels being the Chairperson on the Athlete Input Council, having served as an athlete representative on the Management Team, and training as a Global Messenger have helped to improve her self confidence, public speaking and PR skills. She loves to volunteer for Special Olympics fundraisers, events and the Healthy Athletes Program- Special Smiles, which makes sense since she is always smiling. Recently, Morgan made ALPs history by being the first athlete to train other athletes in the new Athlete Leadership Introduction Course. This full day course prepares athletes and their parents/mentors to become Athlete Leaders in Special Olympics.
