Dr. R. Sam Williams, Sam Williams and Associates LLC
PhD., Materials Science Engineering (Polymer Chemistry), Washington State University, 1980
USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, WI 1979-2009
As Project Leader for the Wood Surface Chemistry Research Work Unit for 15 of my 30-year career at
the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), I was responsible for a broad research program to determine the
cause of wood deterioration outdoors and to develop treatments and innovative products and
processes for improving wood performance. An integral part of this work was laboratory and field
evaluation of materials and the development of methods for monitoring changes of materials during
outdoor exposure. Factors, such as UV radiation, time of wetness, and cyclic fatigue, were incorporated
into accelerated laboratory tests to predict service life.
Following retirement from FPL in June 2009, I formed Sam Williams and Associates (LLC), a consulting
firm. Our mission is to evaluate wood-related performance in structures and work with architects,
engineers, and builders to ensure long service life of wood used in residential and commercial
structures.
