Big Payout Jump for the 2015 National Finals
Contestants are going to have a few million more reasons to
qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, NV in 2015 as
they are significantly increasing the purse money. The payout will
jump from $6.375 million in 2014 to a whopping $10 million in
2015. That means a go round win will go from paying $19,002.40
in 2014 to $26,230.77 in 2015 and the Average win will go from
$48,731.97 to $67,269.23. All told each round will pay out $23,317
more and the Average will pay $69,951.92 more.

“I’ve been putting off making a bit change for a long time,” said
Walker. “I ride him in it at home. I’ve always thought if I just had a
little something that I could hold him up more…When I went into
the Finals, I thought everything would be good. I had worked him
at home. Then first round at the NFR I hit a barrel. I thought this
is crazy. I fretted all week. He was probably the soundest he’s ever
been. He felt great. I just kept fighting my head, thinking he’s too
nice of horse to do all this.”
Walker made a call to her good friend and fellow NFR qualifier
Sue Smith. A noted futurity trainer, Smith always has a trailer full
of her custom bits with her when she stays with Walker in Ennis,
Texas, for the winter rodeos.
“The day of eighth round, Sue and I talked about 20 times,” said
Walker. “We decided on a bit change. I said, ‘Gosh, Sue I hate to
do that at the NFR, but I’ve got nothing to lose now.’ I’ve got to
win something. If I don’t, I don’t qualify for The American, I don’t
qualify for the Challenges and I won’t qualify for Calgary. I didn’t
have a choice. I had to do something.”
Walker switched from the Loomis that she’d ridden Latte in from
the beginning of his pro rodeo career to a Dave Elliot-made Spur
Up 06 with a twisted-wire mouthpiece with three pieces of chain in
the middle.
“I don’t know if he’s a little bit worried about it,” she said.
“That’s the bit that I ride with at home, and he gets in trouble in
if he tries to buck me off or be silly. When I got ready to go the
circuit finals, I decided to stay with the new bit.”
Walker and Latte, an 11-year-old gelding by Dash For Perks out
of Curiocity Corners, by Silver Lucky Buck, placed in all but the
third round and pocketed $4,177 plus her ticket to the RNCFR.
“I got around them three times at the circuit finals,” she stated.
“This is the beginning of a new year for me. I said, ‘This is the year
of no more hit barrels.’ I’m sure I’m going to hit some because
that’s part of running barrels, but if I can help him along the way to
not hit anymore…”
Walker is up in Odessa, Texas, on Thursday and then heads to

As if that wasn’t a jump enough, each NFR Qualifier will get
$10,000 just for qualifying to the NFR, above and beyond any monies won during the year or at the NFR, and it will count towards
the world standings and their career earnings. With these kind of
payouts, there is a good chance the WPRA record books will be
rewritten in 2015. We could see a barrel racer break the $200,000
earnings mark at the NFR alone and maybe challenge Lindsay Sears
mark for Highest Single-Year Earnings of $323,570 in 2008.

Leslie Willis & Brookstone Forever Sweep 30th Southern Rebel Futurity

East coast futurity competitors have been ringing in the New
Year at C.D. “Jack” Giacobone’s Southern Rebel Futurity for the
past 30 years. The event has long been on the go-to list for 2015
Champion Leslie Willis of Chester, S.C.
“It’s a great futurity to go to,” said Willis, who first started entering the futurity in the late 1990s. “It’s early in the year and everyone’s horses are still pretty green, but they give you so much arena
time it really helps. They have exhibitions the day before and open
arena time before each go. It’s very accommodating that way.”
Willis, who is sponsored by Cox Veterinary Labs and Classic
Equine, swept both rounds en route to the average victory at the
30th Annual Southern Rebel Futurity aboard Brookstone Forever
(“Brooke”), a 4-year-old daughter of Brookstone Bay out of Bit
Happens, by Feature Mr Jess. She and her husband Jason purchased
Brooke as a 2-year-old for $3,200 out of the 2013 Heritage Place
Fall Mixed Sale.
“Jason and I have always seemed to have better luck buying
cheaper horses off the track,” said Willis. “I had always wanted a
Brookstone Bay, but couldn’t afford any of the geldings. I wasn’t
really excited about her bottom side, but if she was going to be a
(Mr) Jess Perry, I would rather it be Feature Mr Jess because of the
Truckle Feature.”
Willis said she was drawn to Brookstone Bay because of his
breeding. The sire of All American Futurity Winner and AQHA
Racing Champion Running Brook Gal is by First Down Dash and
out of a daughter of noted barrel horse sire and broodmare sire
Coup De Kas (TB). Willis, herself, had a lot of success with the
Coup De Kas line with horses like barrel futurity champion Time
To Coup.
“She’s also a gray,” laughed Willis. “That seems to be the color
around our place.”

The biggest strike against Brooke, in Willis’s opinion, was her
ovaries.
“I’m not a mare person,” she said. “I’m coming around to it. Last
year I had Me Me And Me, but I raised her, and she doesn’t act like
a mare at all. Brooke is all mare. She’s constantly kicking the back
wall of her stall and has to wear kick chains. She’s also a cribber.
When we first got her home, I told Jason, ‘We need to find out if

she’s going to make real soon, and if not we need to sell her and let
her be someone else’s problem!’”
Luckily for Willis, Brooke proved an easy study on the barrels.
“She’d have to be nice for me to put up with all that!” she
laughed. “She really wants to work and seems to like her job.”
The victory in the $5,000-added Futurity was worth $3,971. Willis
also placed sixth in the average with the Furyofthewind gelding
Championofthehouse for $1,759.

Cooper Conquers at SherryLynn Johnson Invitational

Jill Cooper was in for a big change when she and a close friend
decided that Cooper needed a bigger, more free-running horse.
“My good friend Ally Hayes of Oxy-Gen and I were talking about
how I needed to find me a stronger horse that fit my style better,
which would be more of a free-running horse,” explained Cooper.
Hayes immediately remembered a 5-year-old gelding down in Florida that a good friend of hers had trained that she thought would be
the perfect fit for Cooper.
“Caryn Henry started and trained Credit Ta Fame aka Saturday, and
as soon as I saw him work and got the chance to ride him, I was smitten. I immediately fell in love with him and also with Caryn’s training
style. I ended up buying Saturday in October but unfortunately didn’t
get to run a lot this past fall due to an ankle injury.”
With the ankle all healed up, Cooper and Saturday took the 2014
SherryLynn Johnson Invitational by storm.
“This was the first time I had been to the invitational and I absolutely loved every minute of it. I didn’t really know what to expect
going into it and I was just hoping for a smooth, clean run in the
first round,” Cooper said, noting that making clean runs have been
quite an obstacle for her in the past few years.
Cooper told herself prior to the first run that if she rode Saturday correctly, she knew she would have a pretty good shot at making it back to the short-go.
“I made a few rider mistakes in the first round, but Saturday compensated for them and we ended up third in the long-go. I immediately sent the video to Caryn for some tips and she got me doing
a couple things differently when working him. Along with that and
another dose of Oxy-Focus and Oxy-Zen, we were confident he
would be ready for the short round.”
Saturday and Cooper came in wheels-a-blazin’ in the short round
and ended up second in the short round.

With a second place finish in the short round and a third place finish in the first round, that moved Cooper into the lead in the average.
“I couldn’t believe it! I was just hoping for two smooth runs and
winning it was more than I could’ve even hoped for. This was my
biggest win to date, so it’ll be something I will remember forever,”

Cooper and Saturday left with $8,300, a 5-Star Saddle Pad, a Jacket
and a pair of Justin Boots for their win. In addition, Cooper would
like to thank the Johnson’s for hosting such a phenomenal event and
she encourages more girls to attend the invitational next year!
Parker and Charm SHINE
Young barrel racer Dally Parker and her wicked mount, SR My
Lucky Charm, swept the competition at this year’s SherryLynn
Johnson Invitational, in both the open and the youth!
“Dally and Charm had four amazing runs. They made two runs
in the Invitational and then came back the next morning and made
two more runs in the SherryLynn Johnson Youth,” explained Misty
Parker (Dally’s mother).
In the long-go of the open, Dally and Charm ran a 16.2 placing 4th,
which was good enough for a check of $1,200 and qualifying them
back for the short go that night. In the short round the pair rounded
the cloverleaf pattern in 16.0 but unfortunately caught a barrel.
The next morning was the SherryLynn Johnson Invitational
Youth and Dally and Charm were ready to set the world on fire.
“They were first out in the long-go and were a 15.9, placing 5th and
winning $450. A few hours later was the short round and they went
back in there and ran a 15.571, winning both the short-round and
the average,” explained Parker.
Parker’s time of 15.571 was not only the fastest time of the entire
event, but also a new arena record! Winning the short-round paid
$224.00 and winning the average paid $1800.00. In addition, Parker
and Charm left with a new saddle, a pair of Soft Ride Boots, Ferrini
Boots, a gift certificate to PixelWorx Photography and a jacket.
Misty Parker noted that the bond that Dally and Charm share is
one-in-a-million.
“Charm and Dally have such a great relationship and bond, it is
truly amazing. Charm is so special because she always gives 110%
no matter what. With each run at the SJI, she came back stronger
and faster.”
The Parkers will certainly be making the trek back to the SherryLynn Johnson Invitational next year and encourages other youth
riders to make the same trip, you won’t be disappointed!

Headin’ For Home
I
get so excited when the New Year rolls around! For me, it’s new
beginnings, new goals, new adventures.
At The Barn last week, God spoke a word to us. It is:
2015 – Better this year than last. Be white hot on fire. God first!
I’ve had lots of time to think about that and I am ready for
‘better than last’. As the days have gone by and I have endeavored
to hear His voice more clearly, He has impressed upon me a word
picture that I want to share.
Read John 10:10. We have an enemy, the devil. God showed me
that our enemy is working 24/7 to bring bad things to pass in all
our lives. He brings his A game. No messing around. No half hearted effort. Full on attack. Then God showed me that some Christians give their walk with God ‘bench warmer’ effort. We forget to
read our Bible. We don’t go to church because: we are tired, it’s too
cold, so and so is there, kids have homework (they have homework
when time is taken to get them to a sport practice), I have a headache. Just a ho hum attitude about God and being His army. But let
something bad happen and guess who’s on speed dial…..someone
who they know spends time with God.
It shouldn’t be that way. We should have OUR A game on. Full
on attack against the devil. I know that most of us that barrel race
wouldn’t presume to ride our horse once a week and expect them
to perform to their utmost potential. We would get our butt kicked!
How much more should we put effort into hearing and obeying
God and His Word, to be fierce in our dedication to Him.
That’s my prayer for all of us for 2015. God first. The devil defeated. God bless you richly!
