There will be a brief overview of the history of pastel, bringing an understanding of the lasting qualities of this luminous, enduring and user-‐friendly medium. She has won many awards for her pure pigment pastel paintings, oil paintings and charcoal drawings. www.juliegreig.com Class No. 505-‐ fee $370 OILS IN THE OUTDOORS Tutor: SUSAN WILSON How do we know what we or anyone else sees at any given time? Working on the spot, outdoors, from observation is a giddy and a bumpy ride. The wind blows, the light changes, you have to hurry to get it all down. Gone are the certainties of the studio or the seeming certainties of a photograph. But in the struggle to capture the light, the water, the land and the hills, you can get an unmatched liveliness and veracity. I was here, if it works, will be what the image will say. As well the acute memory of the moment stays with you and later, it is possible to work from drawings, not that you might copy them, but they trigger the precise memory of what it was like to be there. By being outside working you have as the neuroscientist, Dr Susan Greenfield, would say, “created new synapses in the brain”. Susan is a member of the faculty of The Princes Drawing School in London. She is also a visiting tutor at there she studied at Camberwell School of Art and The Royal Academy Schools Slade School, Winchester School of Art and Wolverhampton University. Born in Dunedin, she grew up in Southland, trained as a nurse in Auckland and became a staff nurse in St Thomas’s Hospital in London in 1976. From and was awarded a fellowship to Cheltenham and Gloucester University in1985. She is exhibiting in the NZ Portrait Gallery Touring Exhibition, The Adam Award. The Wanaka landscape still draws her back to paint in this area. Class No. 506 -‐ fee $370 + $145 materials & press hire HAND COLOURED SOLAR PLATE ETCHING Tutor: JO OGIER In this 5 day workshop you will experiment with the incredibly versatile and exciting techniques of scraperboard and photo polymer plate etching, also known as solar plate etching. Solar plate is made up of a photo emulsion backed by a thin metal plate. It is UV light sensitive, water soluble and safe to use. During the course we will explore image development and mark making using scraperboard – a thin clay board with a black surface that is scratched into to create an image similar to a wood engraving. A solar plate will then be made from this image and surface rolled. We will then cover various techniques of hand-‐colouring with watercolours. The main outcome of the course will focus on the development of your own imagery and the production of a fabulous limited edition hand-‐coloured solar plate etching. . This course will best suit those with some drawing or printmaking experience. Jo is an MFA graduate from the Otago School of Art (2000), and also holds a Graduate Diploma in Plant and Wildlife Illustration (NSW Australia 1995), along with a Diploma of Art with Honours also from the Otago School of Art (1993). She has had a series of scholarships and awards, including the William Hodges Fellowship awarded in 2000. She has exhibited extensively in New Zealand and in several group shows internationally. Jo has also completed a number of large scale commissions for The Otago Museum, The Nelson Provincial Museum and The Department of Conservation. Her work is primarily concerned with issues of conservation and ecology. Jo currently works full time on her art and lives in Sumner, Christchurch with her husband and three dogs. Class No. 507 – fee $370
THE COMPLETE BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO DIGITAL Tutor – DAVE WETHEY Have you been using a digital camera for years and wondered just what they are capable of? Does the manual make little sense, if you have bothered to read it at all? Do you want to get beyond the point of just taking snaps and learn how to create images that have impact? Do you wonder if there are settings on your camera that could be useful and improve your photos? Have you got thousands of photos on your computer and are wondering if there is a better way of managing them? What can you do with all those files that are ‘locked’ away in a computer? How can you enhance them? What are the printing options and what else can you do with them? It can be intimidating but this fun-‐filled, creative week will take the mysteries out of the digital camera and explore the creative uses of all those features plus look at the associated use of a computer to manage, enhance and use photos. It will all be explained in practical workshops and in easy to understand language – that is guaranteed. Topics will include understanding quality and resolution, shooting in low light, using flash effectively, photographing people, motion, sports, creating strong compositions, using lens(es) effectively and more. A laptop would be a big advantage for this course as would Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop. Dave runs an imaging and photography consultancy and comes from a professional career spanning three decades in the newspaper industry where he worked as a chief photographer, a specialist in digital imaging and as an illustrations editor. He has been involved extensively in the implementation of digital technology and has comprehensive knowledge of digital cameras, applications, systems, digital management and publishing. He specialises in teaching and training in photography, digital imaging, design and the effective use of images for the newspaper industry, tertiary institutions including the University of Canterbury and Christchurch Polytechnic as well as for groups, businesses and personal tutoring and mentoring. Class No. 508 – fee $370
LANDSCAPE & PORTRAITURE PHOTOGRAPHY Tutor: DAVID OLIVER “All the technique in the world doesn’t compensate for the inability to notice.” Elliott Erwitt Portraiture: will cover the use of natural light and how that affects the subject you are photographing and how to get great expressions from your sitter and make them feel relaxed. It will show work from masters from the past up to the current masters. David will work hands on with each student demonstrating how to take the perfect portrait. Bring cameras and a short telephoto if possible. David is a Nikon shooter so he will have portrait lenses with him for Nikon users.
Landscapes: will teach what to look for in the landscape. It will cover composition and how to use it to strengthen your images, when to choose B/W over colour. David maintains that emotion is the most important element in a photograph, and this area will be studied. You will shoot sunrise one morning, which will mean early start, early finish; and vice versa – a sunset shoot with a later start. The programme will be based around the weather so obviously if it’s raining they will be portrait days. David views life through a lens. His work takes him all over Australia and across the world shooting weddings, portraits and landscapes. His ability to capture incredible images has been recognised not only by his clients, but by his profession. He is a Grand Master of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography and an ambassador for Nikon and Epson. Class No. 509A – fee $148 FLY TYING (Monday, Tuesday) Tutor-‐ MIKE WEDDELL This course will cover the basic tools and techniques of fly tying to enable students to tie practical patterns for both the local area and other parts of the country. Apart from a few lessons at the College, most of the time will be spent putting theory into practice in some of the finest trout fishing areas in the country. A fishing licence is a pre-‐requisite. Mike is a noted fly fishing expert; he has been fly fishing for 40 years and a fly fishing teacher for over 35 years. For the last 30 years he has been the angling correspondent for the Otago Daily Times. He is author of three books on the sport, How to Teach Yourself Fly Casting and Ten of the Best New Zealand Trout Flies, and Fly Fishing Made Easy. Class No. 510 -‐ fee $370 MIXED MEDIA Tutor: LYNN TAYLOR This print based mixed media class explores a variety of interventions on paper and fabric towards creating a collection of layered surfaces, textures and experimental samples. Solar printmaking (relief plates and stamps) and collagraphic style printmaking will be the main focus, supported by processes of collage, cyanotype, rusting and piercing. As the course progresses individuals can select and develop their favourite processes towards creating a more resolved outcome such as narrative pages, a journal, individual images or object/s. Basic book binding and pamphlet stitching instruction will be included. Alongside the core course there will be a short fun exercise/activity undertaken each day to help push the boundaries of your art. There will be a materials fee at the class. Lynn Taylor approaches her art practice with a printmaker’s sensibility working across print, digital, textile, paint and written mediums. She is interested in the integrating and pushing the boundaries of these disciplines to create objects and surfaces that invite viewers to touch. She enjoys researching historical and nautical themes, scratching away to uncover things that lurk under the surface. In two parallel streams she works as a visual artist and an arts facilitator, with much of her work linked with residencies and a focus on encouraging creativity and developing art integration with specific communities. Examples include working with students at St Margaret’s College -‐ Otago University, the Art and Anatomy project, The Westland with Joanne B Karr (N.Z and Scotland), the Caselberg trust project and the Interchange Exhibition in Jeonju, South Korea. Graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Education she focused her early career on specialist art teaching. In 1998 she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dunedin School of Art) followed by a Master of Fine Arts (distinction) 2003. http://lynn-‐taylor.blogspot.co.nz/; https://www.facebook.com/lynntaylorartist Class No. 511 -‐ fee $370 BOOK ARTS Tutor: ROSEMARIE JEFFERS-‐PALMER One main leather covered book will be made during this school involving laminated boards, hollow backs and use of twining/weaving/stitching as a means of book decoration. Designing suitable endpapers structure and decoration will be part of our consideration. Laminated boards allow the spine unit and covers to be completed as separate entities and attached to the book block. It is a very strong structure and allows for separate pieces of leather to be used. Time permitting we will discuss stub binding and make samples of new, decorative forms including Benjamin Elbel’s ‘Onion Skin’ development. Some stub bindings can have relevance to conservation work. Many of these structures are also very suitable for artists’ books, albums, guest books and journals as the text opens completely to the centre of each section. Along the way we will be referring to design principles and use of simple foil tooling. Come and be stimulated, challenged or simply to have a go and take home a unique book and lots of creative ideas. Beginners are welcome as well as more experienced binders. A materials fee will be payable at the class. Rosemarie has a Diploma of Art, teaching qualifications and is a graduate of the Sydney Institute of Technology Bookbinding and Restoration course. Painting and teaching art plus bookbinding and teaching many aspects of it have been her life. Her paintings and books have been in group and individual exhibitions in Australia and internationally with works now in private collections. Current bookbinding teaching includes Artists' Books at COFA (College of Fine Arts, University of NSW), basic bookbinding for the Sydney Community College and in her bindery in Enmore. Inspired by Australian literature her bindings are often textural and reflect landscape and organic forms. Repair and restoration work, as well as special commissioned bindings, fill her days as well as managing, with her husband, Amazing Paper, a specialty paper and bookbinding supply retail shop. Class No. 512 – fee $370 + $40 materials fee JEWELLERY: TELLING STORIES: MAKING HISTORIES Tutor: DAVID MCLEOD Each piece of jewellery tells a story, with the combination of materials, the development of ideas and the processes used to make a piece. Then who it’s made for, why and when begin the making of histories. Students on this course will be taken through the journey of making using a range of approaches. David will be bringing a significant amount of equipment from his Dunedin-‐based workshop. Forging (non ferrous metals), casting, small scale in delft casting clay, cold and hot joining techniques, bezel stone setting, repousse and other texturing techniques, are just some of the methods we will use. The class is suitable for both beginners and more experienced makers. Students are encouraged to bring work in progress for assistance in completion or for developing new work.
