Karl Anthony Malone
Karl Anthony Malone nicknamed “The Mailman,” is a retired professional basketball power forward. In
his basketball career, Malone spent his first 18 seasons (1985-2003) with the Utah Jazz and formed a
formidable duo with his teammate John Stockton. He played his final season (2003-2004) with the Los
Angeles Lakers.
Although Malone is a celebrated former professional basketball player, he is being recognized for his
many contributions as a businessman and leader in the northern region of Louisiana, as well as, in the
state of Utah.
Malone continued his business savvy ways that he dabbled in as a player; except now they are connected
to his growing collection of businesses, which focus largely on commercial development, restaurants and
timberland operations, all under the umbrella of Malone Properties. A list of his businesses and
properties include: A Texaco/Arby’s in Ruston, Teriyaki Grill franchise in Ruston, a 230-acre cattle
ranch, three Jiffy Lube franchises in Utah, two Burger King franchises – part owner (one in Utah, one in
Idaho), Karl Malone Used Car Outlet in Sandy, Karl Malone Toyota in Draper, M&M Automotive, a
body shop/collision center and two condos at Green Valley Resort in St. George, and a few thousand
acres of Louisiana timberland property where he harvests trees.
Karl was born in Summerfield, Louisiana the youngest boy of nine children and lived on a farm with his
mother Shirley. As a child, Malone worked on the farm and chopped trees, hunted, and fished. He
attended the local Summerfield High School and led its basketball team to three consecutive Louisiana
Class C titles from 1979 to his senior season in 1981. Although recruited by University of Arkansas
basketball coach Eddie Sutton, Malone enrolled at Louisiana Tech University.
He was drafted in 1985 by the Utah Jazz. His career highlights and awards includes; 2 time NBA Most
Valuable Player, made 14 NBA All-Star appearances, 11 time All-NBA First Team, 2 time All-NBA
Second Team, All-NBA third team, 3 time All-Defensive First Team, All- Defensive Second Team, NBA
All-Rookie team, 2 time NBA All-Star Game MVP, NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and #32
Retired by Utah Jazz. He scored 36,928 points, had 14, 968 rebounds, and 5,238 assists.
Malone competed with the United States national team in the Summer Olympic games of 1992 and 1996;
in both years he won gold medals. After retiring from the NBA, Malone joined the staff of the Louisiana
Tech basketball team in 2207 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in
2010.
Malone married the former Kay Kinsey, winner of the 1988 Miss Idaho USA pageant, on December 24,
1990. They have four children: daughter Kadee, daughter Kylee, son Karl, Jr. and daughter Karlee.
