The organ piece before High Mass is Wondrous Love: Variations on a shape-note hymn by
Samuel Barber (1910-1981). Barber was one of the 20 th century’s great American
composers. These variations are in a perhaps uniquely American concept – we hear
German Baroque influences as well as blues and jazz-inspired melodies and rhythms.
Wondrous Love is a hymn from The Southern Harmony, a volume of shape-note hymns
compiled by William Walker and published in 1835. These hymns were printed in a
different notational system. The individual note heads had different shapes – squares,
circles, diamonds and triangles – whereas the notes in modern hymnals are all circles. The
different shapes represented a different pitch of the scale.
The final hymn for today, Lift every voice and sing , will be sung in celebration of
Martin Luther King Day (Januar y 21). This hymn is often referred to as the
African-American National Anthem.
After mass we will hear Reverie, an organ piece by William Gr ant Still (1895 1978). He was the Afr ican-Amer ican to conduct major American or chestras and
the first to have his music played by them. His music was also played dur ing his
lifetime by the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, among
others. Reverie has a meditative and dream -like quality, as its French name
suggests. We can also hear the influences of jazz and impressionism.

ADULT FORMATION
Father Bates will resume the Lectio Divina Bible Study today at 9:00 a.m. in the All
Saints Chapel. Father Bates will be slightly altering the format of the study to
include some in-class readings on topics of the Christian faith and life for fruitful
discussion in addition to the study of scripture. If you haven’t yet tri ed this Adult
Formation opportunity, or if you have and haven’t had a chance to come in a

CHORISTERS
The Choristers of Grace Church have been invited to sing for the Annual Diocesan

CONCERT NEXT SUNDAY
Next Sunday, January 25, at 5:00 p.m. Grace Church will host a recital by Linda
Jones, soprano and Charles Weaver playing theorbo. Linda and Charlie are some of
New York City’s greatest early music performers. Their program is entitled “The
Joys and Pains of Love.” They will perform songs by John Dowland, Henry
Purcell, and Barbara Strozzi. I urge the congregation to attend and thank Linda

CANDLEMAS & PARISH DINNER
We celebrate the Feast of the Presentation, also known as Candlemas, with High
Mass on Monday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. Candlemas remembers the presentation
of Jesus in the Temple by his parents, according to Jewish custom, forty days after
his Nativity. It is also the time when Simeon proclaims the canticle that has come
to be known as the Nunc dimittis: “Lord, you now have set your servant free to go
in peace as you have promised; for these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, whom
you have prepared for all the world to see: a light to enlighten the nations, and the

glory of your people Israel.” The nickname “Candlemas” comes from the ancient
and moving custom, which we still observe, of a blessing of and procession with
lighted candles. Please mark your calendars and join us that evening for High Mass

FLOWER DONORS NEEDED
A new Altar Flower sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the first flower of the
Parish House. Please consider signing up. The cost is $90 per Sunday for two
vases. Two people can split the cost at $45 per vase.

10:30 Coffee Hour hosts are needed for the month of February. Please consider
signing up for this important ministry. A sign-up sheet is upstairs in the Parish

THE PRESIDING BISHOP TO VISIT GRACE CHURCH IN NEWARK

and Primate of The Episcopal Church The Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts
Schori will visit Grace Church in Newark. This is a special honor for our parish, as
she has only visited our diocese a few times in her nine-year term.
