2011 Annual Report
With increased attendance, strong finances,
enhanced exhibits, and education and community programs, Please Touch Museum® has matured into an organization that is
positioned to bring our philosophy of learning through play to all for generations to come.
In the last 3 years, Please Touch Museum has solidified its place as a major regional and national cultural destination with more
than a half million visitors in 2011 alone. Our increase in new and repeat visitors as well as the increase in both contributed and
earned revenue strongly supports the sustainability of our business model.
We take a multi-disciplinary approach, introducing young children to art, theater, music and dance, science and math, finance,
literature and history through hands-on, interactive
exhibits and programs. At the Museum, it remains
our priority to ensure that every child can enjoy what
Please Touch Museum has to offer, regardless of
socio-economic status or ability level. Through
school group voucher programs and reduced and
free admission opportunities like Target 1st
Wednesdays and the Free Library of Philadelphia
Play Pass, we’ve tackled the economic barrier
and introduced many families to the Museum. We
are also extremely proud to host special hours
for families with a child on the Autism Spectrum
and are constantly working to make our Museum
welcoming for families with special needs.
Please Touch Museum provides exhibits, programs
and educator tools that support preschool and early
elementary curriculum and supplement classroom activity filling the voids that cuts in funding for schools leave behind.
We also had an extremely successful year of working with our community partners to bring the Museum’s educational programs into
low income and often underserved neighborhoods. Play based child development and parenting workshops, Word Play, an interactive
literacy program for infants and toddlers, preschool and early elementary programs such as Books to Know, Books to Grow!
and school readiness initiatives like our annual Kindergarten Mixer, increasingly promote our mission of learning through play
outside of the museum walls. In 2011, Please Touch Museum delivered community based programming to more than
5,000 children and families throughout the region.
We believe that it’s essential to make this investment in young children now, in order to cultivate
future arts patrons, community and business leaders and productive citizens of tomorrow.

During the busiest weekend of FY2011, more than 12,500 children and
families visited Please Touch Museum. Most often the first people to
greet families when they enter Memorial Hall, the Admissions staff plays
a key role at the Museum by not only handling hundreds of monetary
transactions a day but by also going above and beyond the call of duty
to set a positive tone for each visitor’s experience.

The Executive and Administrative staff includes several departments at Please Touch Museum
including Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology and Executive Leadership.
These groups of professionals ensure that the organization runs smoothly and efficiently,
staff are hired and trained appropriately, that the goals of the Board of Directors are supported
and executed, the Museum’s diverse revenue streams continue to flourish and that PTM
resources are properly managed. This resourceful band of individuals helped the Museum
reduce operating costs from $9.3 million during the first year at Memorial Hall to $8.6 million

midnight on New Year’s Eve, Please Touch Museum is the place to be! This year’s
celebration, supported by Macy’s was no exception as the Museum hosted a record
number of children and their families at PTM’s annual Countdown to Noon™. Of
course, King Countdown and Numbers 1 through 10 (otherwise known as the
Education department) made appearances, dancing and celebrating with the littlest
party animals. And as the final seconds ticked away, the 2011 Ball descended

In October, Please Touch Museum hosted a Healthy, Safe Halloween
presented by PECO, a month long not-so-scary celebration featuring
lots of opportunities to celebrate this festive time of year. In addition
to story times, a black light show and Halloween day trick-or-treating,

Countdown to Noon
Parents and kids in the Philadelphia area know that if they can’t make it until
Village into “Boo Boulevard” a special exhibit featuring Halloween
toys from every generation.
The culmination of these activities was the annual Monster Mash
Memorial Hall-O-Ween Celebration, with two nights of spooktacular
fun at the Museum. Friday, October 21st was open to all little ghouls
and goblins, while Saturday’s celebration was a members only event.
For both evenings, visitors dressed in fun and imaginative attire and
joined a host of costumed characters for healthy trick-or-treating,
Halloween themed goodies, art activities, dancing and much more!

For the second year, Please Touch Museum opened its doors exclusively for the children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families connected with Variety,
the Children’s Charity of Philadelphia. During this special event, exhibit sounds are
turned off, there are no flashing lights and PTM features programming designed for
children with ASD in mind. Autism Awareness Night is just one of the ways Please
Touch Museum ensures that everyone can enjoy the Museum’s exhibits and programming. Through the Museum’s Autism Access Program, PTM has hosted more than
3,000 children and families through special events like this one.

evening! DJ Prince Charming was spinning tunes, horse-drawn
carriages whisked guests through Fairmount Park and a host
of costumed characters roamed the halls for this evening of
international enchantment!

from PA Jedi and the 501st Garrison Carida, complete

SUPERLATIVES
Stroller in the Park 2011 was a huge success! 325 individuals
took part in Please Touch Museum’s family friendly twist on the
traditional 5K walk. Participants enjoyed a health and wellness
pavilion featuring information and give-aways from 18 companies
and organizations, a snack tent and play activities from Museum
partner, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer.
After a pre-stroll stretch with the Phillie Phanatic, families
completed the 5K course through Fairmount Park in record time
and then enjoyed exclusive early entrance to the Museum for a
morning of learning through play! Stroller in the Park is an annual
anchor event for the Museum’s Get Up and Grow™ initiative and
promotes healthy family activities for children and their caregivers.

We have audited the accompanying statements of financial position of Please Touch Museum as of September 30, 2011
and 2010, and the related statements of activities, and cash flows for the years then ended. These financial statements
are the responsibility of the Museum’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial
statements based on our audits.
We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America.
Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial
statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the
amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used
