In conjunction with Kumu Hula Māpuana deSilva and
Kīhei deSilva, this year’s workshop will also be taught by
Kumu Hula Keali’i Reichel.
Māpuana de Silva is kumu hula of the highly acclaimed Hālau Mōhala ‘Ilima of Ka’ohao, Kailua, Hawai’i.
and continues the lineage of long-established and conservative hula. She graduated in a traditional ‘uniki
ceremony from Maiki Aiu Lake. Māpuana is regarded as an accomplished and influential figure by the hula
community. She has dedicated her life to the perpetuation of the art of traditional hula. Māpuana works along
with her husband to impart the history, language, and values of traditional hula and the Hawaiian culture. Kīhei de Silva is a well-renown Hawaiian language expert and is a highly respected authority on ancient
chants and mele and works translating them. He is an educator, Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winning song
writer, an author and together with his wife they work to ho’omau, to perpetuate their Hawaiian culture.
Keali‘i Reichel, who founded Hālau Ke`alaokamaile in 1980, is a world class performer, best-selling
recording artist, multiple award-winning kumu hula, prolific composer, renowned chanter, choreographer,
dancer, weaver, scholar and teacher. He taught the very first North Coast Hula Workshop and is returning in
2015 to help us celebrate a decade of traditional hula in Twinsburg, OH. In addition to performing at the lū’au
on Saturday, he will be teaching a workshop on Sunday afternoon.
This year we are again honored to have the AWARD WINNING Merrie Monarch dancers of
Hālau Mōhala ‘Ilima perform at Saturday’s Hō’ike along with KEALI’I REICHEL!!
We are featuring two days of hula classes, a class on Friday night, (with Hawaiian food available for dinner),
vendors, and a Saturday night lū’au, benefit auction and hō’ike. Lunch is included on both days. Aunty Māpu
and Uncle Kīhei will be holding an informal class on Friday night and plan to teach a mele, oli, or hula .
Our seminar is being held at The Hilton Garden Inn Cleveland/Twinsburg. www.hiltongardeninn.com. Rooms with
