THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
The Joy of the Gospel sessions that Deacon
Bill and JT Batstone will be facilitating will
focus on the practical application of Pope
Francis' comments in Evangelii Gaudium.
We will explore the WHAT and WHY of the
Pope's comments and then discuss HOW this impacts our
personal life as well
as the life of our church and local community. We encourage
those who will be attending the session to read the entire book
before the first session and then we will discuss specific
sections during each session. The Joy of the Gospel can be
ordered from the Bread of the Presence or downloaded from a
number of sites on the Internet or ordered from Amazon.com.
You do not need to be a theologian to attend the sessions, just
someone who wants to have a deeper encounter of Christ in
your life.

PRAYER PARTNERS
We are inviting St. Edward’s parish to come together in a
special project. On January 31st there will be names and pictures of youth who are in preparation of 1st Reconciliation/1st
Eucharist and the Catechumenate program. We are asking parishioners to take a name and become a prayer partner for that
youth. We have a total of 55 students receiving the sacraments
this year and your prayers are needed! Thank you!
FAMILY MASS
On the first Sunday of each month at the 10:00 Mass, we will be
gathering the children from Christian Education and celebrating
with a Family Mass. Our next Family Mass will be Feb. 1st at
10:00. Please join us for this youth-oriented liturgy.

ANSWER TO THE IQ QUESTION
(c) Bishops are always ordained by other bishops (the bishop of
Rome) and can trace their ordination directly back to the apostles (1 Timothy 3, Titus 1:5). This is known as apostolic succession.
COMMUNITY MEALS
We need volunteers to help provide for our increasing community’s hungry! This is a very important ministry and we need
our community’s involvement. We are facing an average of 70
to 100 meals a night and these include an increase of families. If
you are interested in helping provide a dish or helping with the
set-up or clean up please sign up in the church narthex or
contact our coordinator, Mike Wallace at 432- 8204 or Mary
Chapman for more information. We serve meals on January
18th, 26th & 31st.
We would like to thank Paul Heath, Glenn Bell, Maria Knight,
Patty Hamstreet, Emi McKay and Courtney Morgan for preparing and serving 89 meals last Monday. You are all a blessing!

Brothers and sisters:
The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord,
and the Lord is for the body;
God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power.
PRIMERA LECTURA 1 Samuel 3:3b-10b, 19
A reading from the first Book of Samuel
Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD
where the ark of God was.
The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, "Here I am."
Samuel ran to Eli and said, "Here I am. You called me."
"I did not call you," Eli said. "Go back to sleep."
So he went back to sleep.
Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli.
"Here I am," he said. "You called me."
But Eli answered, "I did not call you, my son. Go back to
sleep."
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?
But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him.
Avoid immorality.
Every other sin a person commits is outside the body,
but the immoral person sins against his own body.
Do you not know that your body
is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you,
whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
For you have been purchased at a price.
Therefore glorify God in your body.

At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD,
because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet.
The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time.
Getting up and going to Eli, he said, "Here I am. You called
me."
Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth.
So he said to Samuel, "Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply,
Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening."
When Samuel went to sleep in his place,
the LORD came and revealed his presence,
calling out as before, "Samuel, Samuel!"
Samuel answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

John 1:35-42
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
John was standing with two of his disciples,
and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said,
"Behold, the Lamb of God."
The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them,
"What are you looking for?"
They said to him, "Rabbi"—which translated means Teacher—,
"where are you staying?"
He said to them, "Come, and you will see."
So they went and saw where Jesus was staying,
and they stayed with him that day.
It was about four in the afternoon.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter,
was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon and told him,
"We have found the Messiah"— which is translated Christ—.
Then he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said,
"You are Simon the son of John;
you will be called Cephas"—which is translated Peter. The
Gospel of the Lord.
Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him,
not permitting any word of his to be without effect.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried
for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People
resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the
sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted
after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an
expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength,
patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later,
many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too
late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at
least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it
may even be too late for viaticum, the true "last rite."
We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to
use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis
of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we
keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is
celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still
at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope
for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind
them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We
bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and
give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate
the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance.
Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such
a rich remedy to body and soul?

RITE OF DISMISSAL
The congregation may notice that
some of their friends or relatives are
called forward after the recitation of
the Apostles’ Creed and are given
an exhortation and blessing before
they leave us to be coached on the
Mass behind the glass doors of the
vestibule. This allows them the
opportunity to participate in the
Mass, to ask questions, to feel more
comfortable with the gestures,
postures and responses of the
Mass. Pray that this effort will be
successful in preparing them for the
reception of the Sacraments during
Easter time.
