Since receiving her Ph.D. in theology from Catholic University of America, she has received fourteen honorary degrees. Johnson is a former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America and received the organization's prestigious John Courtney Murray Award in 2004. She has authored or edited eight books on topics ranging from feminist theology to her most recent work on theology and evolution: Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love (2014).
