Did You Know?: Registration for next year is coming soon! We will spend the next
four weeks in Seminar preparing for registration and the new online course
selection process. On January 20 we will focus on required courses, January 27
will examine electives, February 3 will discuss the importance of choosing the right
classes to meet your goals, and February 10 will tie it all together with a transcript
review and preparation for online registration.
Please talk to your child about their course selection. All of the presentations will be available on our web site the
day of Seminar. The registration forms are already available at www.lctigers.com - select the Fall Registration icon.
Students will be completing the new online registration in PowerSchool on the following dates:
February 17 - 9th graders will register in World History or AP European History classes.
February 18 - 10th graders will register in Science classes.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations: LC's CyberPatriot Teams have begun their journey toward the national competition in Washington,
D.C., in March. CyberPatriot’s core program – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition – challenges teams
of two to six students to find and resolve cyber security vulnerabilities in simulated environments. The CyberPatriot
field is separated into three divisions. Based on the results of two preliminary rounds in December, teams were then
categorized within their divisions into tiers.
In the Platinum Tier, nine SPS teams competed in the Open Division and two competed in the Service Division. Two
LC teams and one from NC placed in the top three and compete online Jan. 16-18 for a chance to go to the
national competition. In addition, Sacajawea Middle School qualified for the middle school semifinal round,
hoping to be one of the three middle school teams to move on to the national competition.
Established by the Air Force Association, the CyberPatriot program was created to excite, educate, and motivate
students toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
disciplines critical to our nation’s future.
Congratulations: Local artist Dan Spalding recently did a painting work shop at LC with the Art Department
advanced students as a follow up from the Festival of the Arts held November 24. The student's completed work
will be on display at the Fox theater in conjunction with the Symphony's Educators concert on March 1.
Congratulations: The LC Debate Team had a wonderful showing at the Conway Classic GU Debate Tournament.
This challenging and competitive tournament included some 37 high schools that traveled from all over our state
as well as, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Texas, California, Florida, and British Columbia. Our team took 3rd place over
Sweepstakes.

Financial Aid Applications Are OPEN!!!
What is the FAFSA? It is a FREE online application for federal student financial aid. Be
sure to apply for the 2015-2016 FAFSA.
Who should apply? ALL seniors! Filing a FAFSA is the first step in getting financial aid
from any college, technical school, or career training program. Even if you are not
sure if you qualify or haven’t decided what school you are going to next year. Apply!
Many scholarships require you to complete the FAFSA to be considered in their process.
LC's goal is for over 80% of our seniors to file their FAFSA - don't miss out on college
money by missing the February 1 deadline!!!!!
When can I fill out the FAFSA? Beginning January 1, you can start your application online at FAFSA.gov (don’t go
to other websites that might charge you to apply - this one is free site - NEVER pay to complete the FAFSA). The
Priority Filing Deadline is February 1! After this date, the amount of money available goes way down. Our goal at
LC is to get all seniors to file their FAFSA before the February 1st priority deadline.
What do I need to do now? Get ready to file in January by getting your PIN at
https://pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp. Your PIN is a four digit online signature that you will need to complete
the FAFSA.
Not a US Citizen? File a WASFA through Washington State instead at http://www.readysetgrad.org/wasfa. You can
still qualify for financial aid.

Rubber Chicken: Clear your calendars, because it is all hands on deck next week for the annual
Rubber Chicken game between Lewis and Clark and Ferris! We are celebrating Rubber Chicken
with a con on game day then a fun night of basketball and school spirit! Here are the facts:
Rubber Chicken game @ the Spokane Veterans Arena on Wednesday, January 21. Girls game at
5:30pm and Boys at 7:30pm. A huge part of the competition is based on participation, so be there
for both games. Doors open at 4:30pm.
Admission: Free with GSL. Without GSL $4 for students, $6 for adults.
This year's theme is Cirque du Chuck (circus theme)
Absolutely, positively no backpacks or large bags will be allowed in the Arena - this is their policy
and we respect their facility rules. NO EXCEPTIONS!
While at the Arena, the expectation is for students (high school and middle school) to be inside
the seating area (remember - participation and cheering are part of the competition) and not
milling around the concourse area. Students are allowed to use the restrooms and the concession
stands, but otherwise they are to be in the seating area.
All LC students, LC families, and community members are invited.
In addition to participation, we are also judged on good sportsmanship - positive cheers only.
If you have a Rubber Chicken shirt, please wear it (they are on sale in the Bookroom for $13). If you don't
have a Rubber Chicken shirt, wear orange!
Attending Rubber Chicken is not an excuse to miss school or be late on Thursday. We have a normal bell

Spokane Junior Wrestling Sign Up: Spokane Junior Wrestling is a 6 week developmental wrestling program for boys
and girls grades K-6 (ages 5-12) hosted at Lewis and Clark High School from February 17 - March 28. Young
wrestlers will learn the fundamentals of the sport in a fun and encouraging atmosphere from the LC coaching staff
and athletes. Sign up is Tuesday, January 20 in the LC wrestling room from 6-7PM. Cost is $50 plus the cost of a

End of Course (EOC) State Testing Make-ups: On January 15 (Geometry) and January 22 (Biology) we will be
administering make-tests for 10th-12th grade students who did not meet standard on the EOC tests last year.
Invitations will be distributed tomorrow (Friday) to the students that need to test on each date. Students are to
report directly to the library at the start of school. The test should take 2 hours and students will be excused for the

NAEP Testing: On February 12, a group of seniors will be taking the NAEP assessment in math, reading, or science.
The NAEP is the National Assessment of Education Progress used to measure student achievement across the
nation. NAEP will aim to collect new types of data that provide an in-depth understanding of what students know
and can do, including how they engage with technology to approach problem solving. Each selected student
will participate in one subject and will take only a portion of the entire assessment. Students will spend about 120
minutes completing the assessment, including transition time and directions. They will also be asked to complete a
questionnaire that aims to get a better understanding of their educational experiences, such as the amount of
reading they do and the types of classes they take. Letters are being sent home today to the selected seniors. It is
very important that the selected students are in attendance for this national assessment. Contact Theresa Meyer

2015 School Bond and Levy Information: Renewed every three years, the Spokane Public Schools educational
program and operations levy is a way to supplement state and federal funding, which falls short of providing for
all that is required to give students a well-rounded education.
The levy is not a new tax. In fact, the levy tax rate is expected to remain stable for the next three years. The levy
and state levy assistance provides 22.7% of Spokane Public Schools’ operating budget.
Spokane Public Schools will ask the community to vote on a bond and a levy measure in Spokane County's
February 10 special election.

Leadership Spokane: Leadership Spokane cultivates and inspires diverse individuals to identify and seek leadership
roles to build effective communities. They are now accepting applications for adult and student members.
Adults: The Leadership Spokane program is an intensive, year long commitment to personal growth, professional
development and community service. Participants gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a
citizen-leader and explore the tenets of “servant” leadership. At the same time, they develop a broad knowledge
of the Spokane community and key issues facing the region. This knowledge is put into practice throughout the
program through site visits and community service activities. Finally, participants build a strong local network while

The Washington State Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth helps young men and women from foster care

SVL for 2nd Semester: The online registration system for 2nd semester SVL courses is now open at
www.spokanevirtual.com. Current students enrolled in year-long SVL courses do not need to re-register - SVL will
automatically roll students over into 2nd semester (ex. English 10A SVL will be English 10B SVL). However, students
enrolled in semester only courses (listed below) will need to complete an online registration if they want to take
additional SVL classes. Spots are limited for SVL, so if you are planning to take a class, register soon!
Semester only courses: Health, Intro to Fitness/Intro to Fitness Student Athlete, Computer Applications, Web Design,
Civics, and CWA.
SAT Saturday Testing Information: The SAT will be offered on Saturdays at LC this
year:
- March 14, 2015 (registration deadline 2/13, late registration deadline 3/3*)
- May 2, 2015 (registration deadline 4/6, late registration deadline 4/21*)
- June 6, 2015 (registration deadline 5/8, late registration deadline 5/27*)
Late registration incurs an additional $28 fee. Students register for exams directly on
the SAT website, www.sat.collegeboard.org. Please be aware that registration
deadlines for the exams close approximately one month prior to the exam date;
late registration deadlines for the exams close approximately ten days prior to the exam date and incur an
additional fee. Additional information regarding the SAT can be found online at our website under the "Info" tab
(SAT testing @ LC), or on the College Board website (www.sat.collegeboard.org).
Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year in high school. At least half of all students take the SAT
twice - in the spring of their junior year and in the fall of their senior year. Most students also improve their score
the second time around.
The SAT test costs $52.50 per test. If you cannot afford to pay the fee, you can see your counselor to apply for a
fee waiver before you register online (click here for fee waiver information:
http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-fee-waivers).
Note: All LC Juniors will take the SAT test during the school day on April 15 for free. More details coming closer to
the test date.
FREE SAT Prep Program: We are excited to offer LC students an innovative and exciting program designed to help
them become more college and career ready! The Naviance Family Connection Program will not only help our
students meet this goal, but also provides them with a FREE SAT prep program! Have your student login and check

Changes are coming to the SAT in 2016: When students open their SAT test books in spring 2016, they’ll encounter
an SAT that is more focused and useful than ever before. The full specifications of the exam along with extensive
sample items for each section will be available on April 16, 2014. Major changes are:
There will be three sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, Math, and the Essay.
The length of the SAT will be about three hours, with an added 50 minutes for the essay.
The exam will once again be scored on a 400 to 1600-point scale. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing
section and the Math section will each be scored on a 200- to 800-point scale. Scores for the Essay will be
reported separately.

ACT Testing: The ACT college admissions test will be offered on Saturdays at FERRIS . For
information on test registration, visit: http://www.actstudent.org/regist/
Be to Ferris by 8:00am, bring a printed copy of your test ticket, photo ID, pencils, and
calculator. The test will end at approximately 12:15pm (or 1:00pm if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing).

Enrollment for Choice Schools: Spokane Public Schools is excited to announce a new enrollment process online for
all students who want to attend a school other than their neighborhood school. A special site has been created
at spokaneschools.org/enrollment where families can research school and program options and apply for their top
choices. By offering a portfolio of educational options, SPS gives families the freedom to choose the school that is
right for their child. More choices mean we are better able to support learning needs, and are better preparing
students to successfully complete some form of higher education: technical, 2-year or 4-year.
Choice school enrollment is open through February 13. SPS is also hosting a School Choice Enrollment Fair
Saturday, January 24, from 10am-noon at Libby Center, 2900 E. First, where families can talk with principals and
students from various SPS schools.
REMINDERS
PowerSchool & Grades: Do you want to know how your student is doing before
report cards come out? Do you want real time progress reports and
attendance data online for your student? Visit www.lctigers.com and click on
the PowerSchool icon at the top. Your PowerSchool login and password were
mailed home with the Welcome Back letter.
In PowerSchool, you can choose to have progress reports emailed to you as often as you want. Last year, we
have 76% of our parents and students accessing their information and 32% getting email reports - we would love
to see everyone utilizing this great tool!
If you have questions about your student's grade, please contact the teacher directly as your first step as soon as
you have a concern so they can partner with you to help your student be successful.

New Peer Tutor program: Now up and rolling in our Academic Success Center in the Library - a peer tutor
program! 40 juniors and seniors have been trained and are ready to assist other students (9th to 12th grade).
Students seeking help for everything from how to study for certain classes or how to improve their grades in a
particular subject may benefit from working with other students who have mastered the material. Students can
meet with a peer tutor can come to the library at lunch Monday through Friday and/or after school Monday

The LC Tiger Pantry: Lewis and Clark now has a FREE food outlet for our students to access canned and boxed
food items for use at home. (We cannot dispense food for lunch). The LC Tiger Pantry is located in the
underground parking garage around the corner from the Tiger Closet. This Pantry was set up for LC students to
access free food to take home and help their families with major meals. Currently, they can access this resource
during the day with a staff member or a counselor. We are inviting students/staff/parents to donate needed food
items to our Pantry all year long. We are needing high protein items (peanut butter, packages of noodles, beans,
canned vegetables, etc). We also could use the cloth reusable grocery bags and strong paper bags. Food
donations can be taken to the Public Office.
Tiger Closet: Thank you to everyone who contributes to the Tiger Closet Fund. Due to your efforts we were able to
purchase underwear, socks, hat, gloves, and deodorant for our students. The Tiger Closet Fund is an account that
was set up by parents of the Class of 2011 to purchase clothes and hygiene products for the Tiger Closet. You may
contribute to this fund in the LC Business Office by indicating that your donation should go to the Tiger Closet Fund.
Thank you for your continued support of the Lewis and Clark community. We are also in need of clothing
donations of: sweatshirts, coats, and gloves - donations can be brought to the LC Public Office.
Travel to Europe in the Summer of 2015: Have you ever wanted to scale the Eiffel
Tower, look the Mona Lisa in the eye, eat decadent chocolate in Switzerland, tour
the caste the inspired Disney's Sleep Beauty's castle, experience history at the
hallowed ground of Dachau, and peek behind the former Soviet Iron Curtain into
Prague?
Mr. Greg Pschirrer, Ms. Emily Haxton, and Mrs. Theresa Meyer are organizing a
European Adventure for Summer 2015. This will be the 5th European trip for us and
we are excited to take your student on the adventure of a lifetime! The two week
trip organized by WorldStrides will include: Paris, France - Lucerne, Switzerland - Munich, Germany - and - Prague,
Czech Republic and many points in between!

We currently have 14 students ranging from 9th-12th grade, 4 parents, and 3 LC leaders registered for the trip. Any
high school age student is welcome to enroll (and we love having parents join in on our adventures!) Contact

GEAR UP for Academic Success: Our new GEAR UP Academic Success Center (ASC) is
open and ready to start helping students! The ASC is open to 9 th and 10 th grade students.
- Where: Southwest corner of the library.
- When: Monday-Friday at lunch, and Monday-Thursday after school (2:30-3:30pm)
- What: Helping students with whatever they need to succeed academically.
School Sponsor: We are excited to announce our continuing partnership with Target stores. Families
who shop at Target and use the Target REDcard can designate LC to receive a donation of 1% of
the purchase total. So far, we have 20 families donating to LC just by shopping at Target! If you
don't have a REDcard, you can apply at: www.target.com/REDcard - our school code is: 106638.

Volunteers Needed: We need you as a VOLUNTEER at LC! Some of the events/projects we need help with are
Picture Day, Tiger Closet, Office staff relief for staff luncheons, Freshman Night, Sr. BBQ just to name a few. If you

Absences: If your student is going to be absent, please call our attendance hotline to excuse the absence at 3546968.
Free Microsoft Software for Students: In an effort to help prepare students for the
technology skills required in the workforce, Microsoft announced Student
Advantage. Students can now use Office every day for school work and activities
that are most important to them. Office not only helps students stay organized and
get their work done today but at the same time develops skills that will be required when they enter the work
force. There is no cost to download and run the full versions of Office provided in the Student Advantage
program. You can also access the Microsoft Mobile apps on smart phones or tablets.
Enrolled students at LC are eligible to install the full version of Office Pro Plus as part of our Office 365 Student
email subscription. Below are instructions on how to install Office Pro Plus on a Windows 7 machine. The installation
process is similar for Windows 8 and the Mac OS.
Procedure
Using the computer you want to install Office on do the following: Login to your Office 365 email account at:
https://login.microsoftonline.com (If you do not remember how to log in to your Office 365 email account, go to:
http://www.spokaneschools.org/Page/23164).
Once logged in, click on the setting’s gear in the upper right corner and select Office 365 Settings.
On the left side, select Software.
The system will detect the operating system you are running and recommend the latest version of Office for you to
install. Once you verify the version to install, click the Install button.
If you are prompted to Run or Save the file, select Run.
Microsoft Office will install in the background and after a few minutes you will receive notice stating "Welcome to
your new Office." At this screen click Next.
Follow the prompts through the installation, selecting the options you want.
When all options are selected, a video will play explaining some of the features of Office. Once the video is done,
it will ask you to Sign in. At the Sign in prompt, enter your [email protected] email address, and click Next.
Follow the remaining prompts and when complete you can begin to use the Office products.
Backpacks Needed: If you have any new or gently used backpacks, we would be happy to accept the
donation! You can bring the backpacks to the LC Public Office and we will distribute them to students in need.

Donate to our Student Assistance Fund to Help Fellow Students: When you come in to pay student fees in the
Business Office, please consider donating to the Student Assistance fund. This fund helps needy students pay for
the required class fees and athletic fees. Every dollar donated goes directly to LC students.
BrightArrow: Learn about the new Parent Notification System called BrightArrow that will send email updates and
text messages for emergency communications and important updates from LC. You can choose what phone
number and/or email address you prefer for notifications and sign up to receive text notifications. Bright Arrow will
not replace the LC News You Can Use, but will be an additional tool to help us communicate with our community.
