Reshoodi stars as
Oman edge Saudis
n Action from the Oman v Saudi Arabia match
OMAN defeated Saudi Arabia
3-2 in a Group
B match of the
Sixth GCC U-23 Football Championship being played last night at
the Bahrain National
Stadium.
It was the second game
of the group which includes hosts Bahrain, who
lost the opening game
against Saudi Arabia 3-2.
Bahrain need to beat
Oman in the last match
of the group to qualify for
the semi-final round. Only
the top two teams of both
groups will qualify for the
next round.
Oman now have three
points in a tie with Saudi
Arabia. Oman, however,
are on top due to superior
goals difference.
Oman went ahead after
Hatem Al Reshoodi scored
just eight minutes into the
match.
Oman dominated the
Saudi but wasted a number of chances to score.
They doubled their lead
just three minutes before
the half-time following Al
Reshoodi’s second goal.
Their third goal came from
Khalid Ahmed Darwish’s
fine header for a 3-0 lead.
Saudi Arabia reduced the
margin to 3-1 in the 63rd
minute with a header from
Abdulaziz Al Beeshi before
Ahmed Isa made it 3-2.
Saudi Arabia tried to
equalise but Oman played
superbly with counter at-
tacks and managed to keep
their lead until the final
whistle. Al Reshoodi was
selected as the best player
of the game as he scored
two goals.
In the other game, Kuwait defeated Qatar 3-0 in
a Group A match.
It was Kuwait’s first
victory in two matches
after losing to the UAE in
the first match of the group
2-0. It was Qatar’s first
game of the group.
Kuwait’s goals were
scored by Ahmed Al
Tararwa (23rd), Ahmed
Hazzam (56th) and Mahmood Mohammed (60th).
The last match of the
group will be between the
UAE and Qatar, scheduled
for tomorrow.
Bahrain bow to Dragons
BAHRAIN Rugby Football
Club’s (RFC) first XV produced a stirring display in the
latest round of the Gulf Top Six
over the weekend but it wasn’t enough to
avoid a second successive home defeat in
the competition.
Having let slip a 16-0 lead over Dubai
Hurricanes the previous week, the Bahrain boys were out to make amends
against the recently-misfiring Dragons
but it was the visitors who had put the
scoreboard to action first as UAE international fly-half Murray Strang knocked
over a penalty.
Strang had the easiest of opportunities to
add to his tally soon after when the referee
awarded a penalty try to the Dragons for
an infringement at the scrum and the experienced Scot made no mistake for 0-10.
Things then went from bad to worse
for the hosts as talismanic flanker Rich
Wilkinson was sent to the sin-bin for
cynical play at the ruck but his side held
firm with 14 men and in fact, the next
points came from Bahrain captain Adam
Wallace, who reduced the deficit to seven
points with a penalty of his own.
The home side were right back in
contention before the break as livewire
scrum-half Rob Bennet, in only his sec-
ond appearance for the club, scorched
over for his side’s first five-pointer.
With Bahrain enjoying a period of
dominance, they took the lead for the first
time early in the second period thanks to
a second penalty from Wallace and when
Tom Jankowski crashed over for another
try, it made it 16 points without response
from the Dragons.
The response wasn’t long in coming
however as Dan Minks crossed to close
the gap to a single point to set up an exciting finale.
The hosts continued to battle manfully but the attritional nature began to take
its toll as prop Jacques Theron, wingers
Sam Wilson and Luke Meehan and flanker Wilkinson, were all forced off through
injury.
With only a few minutes left on the
clock, the Dragons worked their way
deep inside Bahrain territory and Strang
showed all his guile to strike a well-taken
drop goal to edge the Dragons in front and
seemingly break Bahrain’s resistance.
There was still time for one last score
but, much to the disappointment of the
boisterous home faithful, it went the way
of former Ireland under-19 scrum-half
Kris Greene in the Dragons number nine
shirt as he dotted down to make it 16-23.
Al Najma and Isa Town win
AL NAJMA defeated Samaheej
94-64, while Isa Town beat Sitra
81-68 in the opening of round 9
of the Bahrain Zain Basketball
League played last night at the Bahrain
Basketball Association Sports Hall in Um
Al Hassam.
The quarters scores of Al Najma and
Samaheej match were as follows: 28-13
(Al Najma), 25-17 (Al Najma), 21-19 (Al
Najma), 20-15 (Al Najma).
The best scorer from Al Najma was
American H. Quaintance who scored 18
points, while teammate Ali Jaffar finished
with 15 points.
Samaheej’s best scorer was American
Jarvis Jones who had 23 points.
It was Al Najma’s third victory in seven
games as they moved closer to qualifying
for the top six teams tournament, as they
now have 10 points. Samaheej now have
9 points after absorbing their seventh defeat in eight matches.
In the Isa Town versus Sitra match, the
scores of the quarters were as follows:
23-13 (Isa Town), 19-15 (Sitra), 22-19
(Isa Town), 21-16 (Isa Town).
The best scorer for Isa Town was M.
Petkovic who fired 30 points, while Sitra’s best scorer was Patrick Simpson
who finished with 24.
It was Isa Town’s second victory in six
matches for an eight-point total, while
Sitra now have eight points from seven
matches after losing six matches and winning only one game.
