Erika-san
Allen Say
In her grandmother’s house there is one Japanese print of a small house with
lighted windows. Even as a small girl, Erika loved that picture.
It will pull her through childhood, across vast oceans and modern cities, then
into towns—older, quieter places—she has only ever dreamed about.
But Erika cannot truly know what she will find there, among the rocky seacoasts, the rice paddies, the circle of mountains, and the class of children.
For Erika-san, can Japan be all that she has imagined?
Allen Say was born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1937, and he came to the United States
when he was sixteen. He illustrated his first children’s book—published in 1972—in a
photo studio between shooting assignments. But in 1987, while illustrating the Caldecott
Honor book The Boy of the Three-Year Nap written by Dianne Snyder, he decided to make a
full-time commitment to doing what he loves best: writing and illustrating. Since then, he
has created many books, including Grandfather’s Journey, winner of the Caldecott Medal,
Tree of Cranes, Allison, and Home of the Brave. He lives in Portland, Oregon.

Open the Door to Liberty
Anne Rockwell Illustrated by R. Gregory Christie
The island now known as Haiti was once a French colony called St. Domingue,
where white plantation owners forced hundreds of thousands of African slaves to
farm sugar cane. Toussaint L’Ouverture was one of those slaves . . . but not for
long. The day would come when L’Ouverture would lead his island’s slaves into a
revolution for freedom, and his efforts would influence the course of world history.
Anne Rockwell is the author of more than one hundred innovative books for children.
A passion for history and a fascination with this little-known yet incredibly influential man
led her to research the story of Toussaint L’Ouverture. She lives in Greenwich, Connecticut.
R. Gregory Christie is a three-time Coretta Scott King Honor Award winner for his
illustrated books, including Only Passing Through: The Story of Sojourner Truth, also by
Anne Rockwell. Only Passing Through was also honored as Best Illustrated Book of the
Year by the New York Times. Mr. Christie lives in New York.

Just Grace Goes Green
More best-selling books about Grace:
Charise Mericle Harper
Lots of exciting things are happening to Grace and her friends. Most exciting of
all, Mimi’s older cousin Gwen is coming to stay with Mimi, and Miss Lois’s class is
GOING GREEN! For their “green” project, Grace and Mimi aim to inspire their
friends and classmates to conserve plastic bottles. But another issue is that Gwen
has taken a strong liking to Mimi’s favorite stuffed toy, Willoughby. Grace uses her
empathy superpower to figure out ways to make her best friend feel better, and
she makes a difference for the environment too.
Yard sales, toy owls, decorated plastic water bottles, a flaming onion tower, and
a very entrepreneurial Sammy Stringer make this another winning entry in the Just

Gooney Bird Is So Absurd
Lois Lowry Illustrated by Middy Thomas
It’s a cold January at the Watertower Elementary School—the perfect weather for
Gooney Bird Greene to break out her special brain-warming hat! It’s a good thing
she has one. Gooney Bird’s brain will need to be as warm as possible this month,
because Mrs. Pidgeon is teaching her class about poetry. Who knew there could be
so many different ways to write a poem? Haikus, couplets, limericks—Mrs.
Pidgeon’s students soon find that writing good poetry takes a lot of hard work and
creative thinking.
Gooney Bird and her classmates are up to the challenge. But just when things
are going well, the kids get some terrible news. Gooney Bird will need all the
inspiration her brain can muster to organize the most important poem the class
has ever written.
Lois Lowry is the author of more than thirty books for children. Ms. Lowry now divides
her time between Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a farmhouse in Maine. To learn more
about Lois Lowry, see her website at www.loislowry.com.
Middy Thomas was born and raised in Maine. In addition to illustrating the Gooney
Bird series, Middy has done cover art and illustrations for several books.

An Excerpt from Gooney Bird Is So Absurd
“A poem can be whatever you make it be,” Gooney Bird pointed out. She got up from her desk,
took her turn at the board, and wrote: SNOW DAY! I’LL SAY!
Mrs. Pidgeon looked at Gooney Bird as she stood at the board with her two red ponytails protruding from the ruffled holes. “I’m sorry, but I have to ask this,” she said. “I don’t mean to get a
cheap laugh. But, Gooney Bird, are those underpants on your head?”
Gooney Bird thought for a moment. Then she said, in a patient voice, “Once it was underpants.
Now it’s a two-ponytail hat. It’s like a poem. It can be whatever you want it to be.
“Actually,” she went on, and reached for the ruffled fabric, “I’m going to take it off now. The elastic hurts my forehead.”
“Gooney Bird,” said Mrs. Pidgeon with a smile, “you’re so absurd!”
Gooney Bird grinned. “Poem,” she pointed out.
“Look!” she said suddenly, turning toward the window. Outside, they could see the first flakes of
snow beginning to fall.

The Fetch
Laura Whitcomb
“There’s something not right about you,” said Ana. She wasn’t teasing him. She was
concerned about what she detected behind his eyes. This made Calder’s skin tingle.
“You’re not telling me something.”
She was uncanny. Calder silently prayed she could not see how he had broken his Vows
and upset her world and his own.
“You’re lonely,” she told him. “It must be hard to pretend all the time.”
He felt a wave of sadness, sudden and deep.
“Don’t be afraid,” she told him. “Everyone has a secret. I’ll keep yours.”
Calder is a Fetch, a death escort, the first of his kind to step from Heaven back to
Earth.
The first to fall in love with a mortal girl.
But when he climbs backwards out of that Death Scene, into the chaos of the
Russian Revolution, he tears a wound in the ghost realm, where the spirits begin a
revolution of their own.
Laura Whitcomb lives in Portland, Oregon, with her dog Maximus.

set in Imperial Russia.
An excerpt from The Fetch:
Calder was a Fetch, a death escort, and had been since his own death at the
age of nineteen. He had been a Fetch for three hundred and thirty years and so
had seen many women in the Death Scenes to which he had been sent. He’d
watched women drowning, one with seaweed twisting her gown into a mermaid
tail, another in a pond surrounded by lilies that glowed like funeral offerings
about her floating hair. He’d seen women lost and broken in ivy-choked woods
and in open fields where they lay fallen in the snow, half covered like gravestones. Some died safe in their downy beds, some forgotten in alleys.
He had also seen many women who tended to the dying—this one washing
her sister’s face with lilac water, that one praying and weeping with her father.
Some had been nursing soldiers, others dreaming beside husbands they did not
realize had ceased breathing.
For the last three hundred and thirty years Calder had seen thousands upon
thousands of mortal women, so he did not understand why, on this day, the
sight of this particular woman afflicted him.

How a Shy Boy Became President Washington
Anne Rockwell Illustrated by Matt Phelan
Before he was the face on the dollar bill, George Washington was a shy boy with a
hot temper. But George had character and adaptability. He taught himself courage
and self-control. At an early age, and without really realizing it, George
Washington gathered the qualities he’d need to become one of the greatest leaders
America has ever known.
Anne Rockwell’s prose is dignified, Matt Phelan’s illustrations are striking, and
the details they reveal about George Washington’s early days are fascinating, sometimes tragic, and always moving.

A Chet Gecko Mystery
Bruce Hale With illustrations by the author
More Chet Gecko Mysteries:
It all begins when Chet’s favorite teacher is fired, only to be replaced by the
mechanical invention of Dr. Tanya Lightov—a mysterious Russian scientist.
Suddenly, the school seems possessed by forces that are upsetting the natural
order of things: Kindergartners are beating up sixth graders; teachers’ pets are
talking back; and worst of all, Chet’s faithful partner and best friend, Natalie
Attired, has abandoned him in his hour of need.
Will Chet be able to restore his friendship with Natalie and bring Emerson
Hicky back to normal? One thing’s for certain: The crazy, mixed-up mastermind
behind this case will be the last creature anyone expects.

The fleeting emotions of teenagers, as changeable as the weather, ring true in these
emotionally resonant poems. Told from the point of view of both boys and girls,
narrators of various ethnicities fall in love for the first time, pine over crushes, and
brood over broken hearts. Tender, lighthearted, and surprising, this collection will
capture teens, tweens, and anyone who remembers what it’s like to be a young
person in love.
Gary Soto’s first book for young readers, Baseball in April and Other Stories, was a breakout book in literature about Latino young people. He has since published many novels,
short stories, plays, and poetry collections for adults and children. He divides his time
between Fresno and Berkeley, California. For more information about Gary Soto, visit

200th Anniversary of Darwin’s
birth and 150th Anniversary of
Origin of the Species

The True Adventures of
Charley Darwin
Carolyn Meyer
Young Charley Darwin hated school—he much preferred to be outside studying birds’
eggs, feathers, and insects. And so, at the age of twenty-one, he boarded a ship called
HMS Beagle and spent five thrilling but dangerous years sailing around the world,
studying plant and animal life that was beyond anything he could have imagined.
Here, just in time for Darwin’s 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the
publication of his groundbreaking On the Origin of Species, historical novelist Carolyn
Meyer tells the story of his unconventional adventures. It’s the story of a restless
childhood, unrequited teenage love, and a passion for studying nature that was so
great, Darwin would sacrifice everything to pursue it. Includes an author note.
Carolyn Meyer is the author of more than fifty young adult books. Her many
award-winning novels include Mary, Bloody Mary, an ABA’s Pick of the Lists and an
ALA Best Book for Young Adults; and Anastasia: The Last Grand Duchess: Russia, 1914,
a New York Times bestseller. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For more information about Carolyn Meyer, visit www.readcarolyn.com.

Jessica’s Guide to
Dating on the Dark Side
Beth Fantaskey
Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-alife” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named
Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess
by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancé. Armed with newfound confidence and a
copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions,
Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam
European vampire princess.
But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself
fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save
Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction. With sardonic wit and loads of romance
this is a hilarious debut novel.
Beth Fantaskey lives in rural Pennsylvania with her husband and two
daughters. Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side is her first book. For more
